Ron Paul wins Values Voter straw poll

By NBC's Carrie Dann

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Ron Paul, a favorite of libertarian-leaning Republicans and young activists, has won another straw poll.

Paul received 37 percent of the vote in the Values Voter Summit straw poll Saturday at the annual gathering of conservative religious voters in Washington.

Pizza magnate Herman Cain, who gave a rousing speech at the confab yesterday, came in second with 23 percent. Former Sen. Rick Santorum, who - along with his family - spent additional hours milling around the conference grounds to speak one-on-one with voters, won 16 percent.

Tied at fourth place were Gov. Rick Perry and Rep. Michele Bachmann, who each received eight percent of the vote.

Gov. Mitt Romney, the presumed national frontrunner in the race whose Mormon faith had been conspicuously raised by two of the event's evangelical speakers, came in fifth at four percent of the vote.

Straw pollers also asked attendees at the conference who they favor as their eventual nominee's vice presidential pick. The top four in that category were: Bachmann, Cain, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, and Santorum.

Obama will go in 2012 like the Democrats did last November out the front door looking for a job. Hes just no leader but he is a big spender Ill have to say that and a waister on green jobs but I guess the 535 million he gave away did some good to a few.

If this is any indication its that the GOP has no clear contender for the 2012 nomination. I'm not a Republican (thank goodness), but if the GOP takes the presidency in 2012, I prefer for Ron Paul to be the winner. He proposes a lot of things that I believe in. For instance, isolationism. It's time for the US to stop being the world police and start spending domestically rather than on defense.

But with so many polls being drawn and different winners every time, it's gonna be interesting to see how this plays out.

This is it? All you got MSNBC? What about more detailed history and information about the candidates? Don't you prefer an informed electorate? Aren't you in the information business? Tell us about the difference between the candidates in the poll and why they ranked as they did?

Herman Cain is NOT for the small government. He supported the TARP bank bailout as shown by this column he wrote hc133.htm . He also supports government ownership of the banks in the same way the government owns a part of GM. He worked for the federal reserve and was chairman of the Kansas City federal reserve. As his column shows he also supported the federal reserve bank's actions in 2008.

I thought the whole point of the Tea Party and small government movement was to Stop supporting candidates that supported the federal reserve and the government bailouts of the banks.

If a voter ignores the media and does their research they will see that the best candidate for small constitutional government is Ron Paul. He is the only one that has been consistent, credible, and actually believes in peace, liberty, and prosperity.

CD the neo nuts are govt media backed by corporate greed. Its not a left or right issue its about whats right!!! No wars no bailouts a balanced budget. For all those holding their hands out because you no longer have a job to support your families, march down to the FED and bank buildings and let your voice be heard. Nobody is listening to you hear. Ron Paul is Americas last hope if he is not shot like JFK or Reagan for wanting to get rid of the FED

I don't believe that Ron Paul is racist. However, lots of people are, and unless we have laws that proscribe racist behavior, we will be back in the Jim Crow era. Paul is opposed to those laws, as I understand it, because he thinks they are unconstitutional. Never mind that the Supreme Court has said they are.

Whats wrong with the concept ALL pigs are equal, no pig is more equal than another? Content of character, not color!

You do realize that the Jim Crow "laws" were government mandated policy right. The conditions that came about under Jim Crow were not the result of freedom or liberty, but of illegitimate use of government force. The government forced all private individuals to descriminate against black people. States that did not have government mandated racism did not have the social problems of the south. There isnt anything wrong with a Civil Rights Act that prohibits the public sector from descriminating based on race. The problem with the Civil Rights Act is that it denies private people the right to discriminate. We don't need the government to tell businesses that they can not discriminate. The market would take care of it. Just imagine if a restaurant opened today with a "No Coloreds" policy. They wouldn't have any customers, there would be massive protests, and the stupid business owner would lose a ton of money.

Also, if you think the government has the right to tell private individuals that they may not discriminate, would you support a government program of compulsory bi-sexualtiy? Bi-sexuals are the only people who don't discriminate based on sex.

You couldn't pay me to vote for Ron Paul, I think he's a nut case. I would have to vote for Obama if Ron Paul was running against him. Run anyone against Obama and they have my vote, with the exception of Ron Paul!!! I would prefer Herman Cain as my candidate at this point.

Paul IS the only Republican candidate that would shake things up and change the status quo. With any of the others it would just be a continuation of Bush's failed policies.

Chalk up another victory for peace. Ron Paul's Revolution is marching on with enormous grassroots support. He may have "only" raised $8 millon in the last quarter compared to Slick Rick's $17 million but he had 100,000 donors compared to 22,000 for Perry. It's not about the amount of money it's about the number of votes. Ron Paul will be our next President.

Paul and Cain obviously have no chance at being US President. How do they do so well in the straw polls? Do you think that whatever method they are using to cheat actually makes them look bad instead of looking good?

The supreme court ruled once that it was ok to keep blacks and whites segregated. What's that tell you.  The Civil Rights Act is touchy because it says that you can basically throw someone out of your home because their black.  However, if you sell hot dogs out of your home you have now violated the law.  Some libertarians bring it into question because it infringes on private property rights of business owners.  If a business wants to be racist, they should be able to.  It will be there loss in the long run.  I personally believe that race causes wars just like religion does and that civil rights warrant special attention under the law, like religion gets.  But if someone questions the status quo, such as Ron Paul, he is labeled a racist.  He also wants to stop sending Israel, or any other country billions of dollars a year, and is called an anti-semite for that.

Prohibition did not stop alcohol but did create the mafia. Drug laws do not stop drugs but has created the drug cartels.

The funny thing about this is I can no longer believe even half of what MSNBC says any more. These stories are sounding more and more fishy everyday. But if true shows how disorganized the Repubs are. And truthfully I do not think America can stand more liberalism. We are out of money and that means we are out of time.

I have tons of respect for Dr. Paul. He is a true patriot for our country as it applies to enemies within. But he is wrong when it comes to foreign enemies. We cannot bury our head in the sand and hope the world will love us. They won't.

These are my thoughts about Ron Paul and women's choice: He will promote, as a physician, life first and foremost. Yet, he believes the government should stay out of it; and this leaves it up to the woman and her physician, or women and other women, implementing natural herbal remedies (It's the woman's business and ultimately a private matter.) I see other valuable reasons for supporting Ron Paul. And I think women will prevail for their own decisions were this matter to come before the Supreme Court again.

Whats funny is liberals blame Wall Street for a widening gap between rich and poor. As anybody ever thought about the insane rates of inflation in the past 15 years due to monetary policy by the Federal Reserve. Any liberals know how much a gallon of gas or milk was 15 years ago? Instead of talking about jobs, why don't you talk about purchasing power for minimum wage workers. Ron Paul wants to improve the value of money by limiting power of the Federal Reserve and thus allowing minimum wage earners some purchasing power.

What is it due to Bruce? Higher demand in China? China didn't exist 15 years ago? The value of the dollar is down and the prices are up.

Iran doesn't like us because we support Israel. If you believe that it is because we eat too many cheeseburgers and they don't like our way of life then you are sadly misguided by the George Bush mantra. If we stay out of their business, they will stay out of ours. We don't need to be the worlds police. I don't see Al Queda bombing the Vatican.
