Cantor says he's concerned by 'mobs' at 'Occupy Wall Street'

Jim Lo Scalzo / EPA

Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor addresses the Value Voters Summit in Washington, DC, Friday. The Value Voters Summit, sponsored by the Family Research Council, is an annual gathering of the religious right; it provides Republican politicians and presidential candidates an opportunity to display their conservative bona fides.

The second-ranking House Republican castigated "Occupy Wall Street" protesters on Friday, just as Democrats begin cozying up to the weeks-old demonstrations.

House GOP Leader Eric Cantor decried the protests that started several weeks ago in New York, and have spread to major cities across the country. Cantor said in a speech at the Values Voters Summit in Washington that he is "increasingly concerned" about the "growing mobs" represented at the protests.

Cantor's remarks, some of the harshest by a Republican toward the "Occupy" demonstrators, comes amidst a growing political divide over the protests. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi backed the demonstrations, saying, "God bless them for their spontaneity." And other Democrats have been even more open in their embrace of the movement, which has also attracted support from organized labor.

Organizers behind the movement, which expresses outrage toward the conduct of corporate America and seeks campaign finance reform, have hoped it develops into an analogue for the Tea Party on the left, which has helped fuel a Republican political resurgence over the past two years.

"Some in Washington have actually condoned the pitting of Americans against Americans," Cantor said of the protests after accusing the Obama administration's policies of being an "assault on many of our nation's bedrock principles."

Other political leaders have been more coy in their approach toward the demonstrations; President Obama nodded toward the protests as a sign of broader frustration over the state of the economy.

As for Republicans, Mitt Romney accused the protesters of engaging in "class warfare," but has otherwise stayed silent about the demonstrations. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich called them the "Obama demonstrations," while Texas Rep. Ron Paul encouraged the protests.

"If they were demonstrating peacefully ... and making a point, and arguing our case, and drawing attention to the Fed–I would say, good!" he told the libertarian magazine Reason.

So Cantor has no problem with Tea Party demonstrations, but this somehow is a "mob". Well, sorry Eric, but people with different perspectives from yours are also protected by the Constitution. Whether you like it or not.

Amazing that Cantor the hypocrite had no problem with his teabaggger friends and their demonstrations with pictures of the president as an African witch doctor or Hitler. Maybe when the fool read the constitution at the opening of the House session , he missed the part about the right for peaceful assembly. For a constitutionalist he is such a liar.

Do you mean the civil unrest is accepted ? Or....were you trying to spell "except" ? It's difficult to take someone serious when they display less than high school grammar. As far as the mobs go, they have the first amendment right to demonstrate.

Hey, Fair and Balanced, your ideas sound a lot like what the British thought about American colonists at the original "Tea Party," which involved actual tea instead of a stout, aging white folk with teabags stapled to their colorful costumes.

F Eric Cantor and the rest. There are Grandmothers, college kids, college graduates, police, fireman, teachers-even some that work on wall street ! And Druggie Limbaugh calls them "human debris". They are peaceful ,not carrying guns "because they can" not tryiing to intimadate with weapons, not attcking handicapped people-all of which we seen with the tea party. In fact, if the Tea Party had any credibility, they should actually join in. Wall Street made a couple of trillion dollars evaporate. Peoples pensions and jobs. they get bailed out, the GOP oppses reform that would keep it from happening again, and the middle class gets plundered.

Why cant the 1% pay their fair share? Why is the system rigged for them?

These protesters might set their sights on some of their "own", meaning Democrat, lawmakers who helped create the terrible housing market, and subsequent economic collapse, by their cavalier embrace of using class and economic warfare to push through legislation which played into the belief that everyone deserves, as in entitled to, home ownership. The deplorable rules, caused by such men as Dodd and Franks, turned terrible credit risks into no-down-payment, no-credit-check, no-money-down home "owners", even though they were sure to fail to make their payments. The financial institutions, foolishley owned by the banks, were allowed to bundle these securities, knowing they stunk to high heavens, on an unsuspecting populace, leading to collapse. The credit agencies and mortgage insurance companies were blinded by their greed, passed on their duties, and heads should role. The protesters can say what they want, but their situation has little or nothing to do with the "distribution of wealth" they rail against, and all to do with failed economic policy by their own so-called leaders.
