Cantor says he's concerned by 'mobs' at 'Occupy Wall Street'

Jim Lo Scalzo / EPA

Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor addresses the Value Voters Summit in Washington, DC, Friday. The Value Voters Summit, sponsored by the Family Research Council, is an annual gathering of the religious right; it provides Republican politicians and presidential candidates an opportunity to display their conservative bona fides.

The second-ranking House Republican castigated "Occupy Wall Street" protesters on Friday, just as Democrats begin cozying up to the weeks-old demonstrations.

House GOP Leader Eric Cantor decried the protests that started several weeks ago in New York, and have spread to major cities across the country. Cantor said in a speech at the Values Voters Summit in Washington that he is "increasingly concerned" about the "growing mobs" represented at the protests.

Cantor's remarks, some of the harshest by a Republican toward the "Occupy" demonstrators, comes amidst a growing political divide over the protests. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi backed the demonstrations, saying, "God bless them for their spontaneity." And other Democrats have been even more open in their embrace of the movement, which has also attracted support from organized labor.

Organizers behind the movement, which expresses outrage toward the conduct of corporate America and seeks campaign finance reform, have hoped it develops into an analogue for the Tea Party on the left, which has helped fuel a Republican political resurgence over the past two years.

"Some in Washington have actually condoned the pitting of Americans against Americans," Cantor said of the protests after accusing the Obama administration's policies of being an "assault on many of our nation's bedrock principles."

Other political leaders have been more coy in their approach toward the demonstrations; President Obama nodded toward the protests as a sign of broader frustration over the state of the economy.

As for Republicans, Mitt Romney accused the protesters of engaging in "class warfare," but has otherwise stayed silent about the demonstrations. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich called them the "Obama demonstrations," while Texas Rep. Ron Paul encouraged the protests.

"If they were demonstrating peacefully ... and making a point, and arguing our case, and drawing attention to the Fed–I would say, good!" he told the libertarian magazine Reason.

Washington that he is "increasingly concerned" about the "growing mobs" represented at the protests.

ROTFLMAO!

Eric Cantor is worried about mobs?

Where was the weasel's concern when the tea baggers where packing heat & carrying outrageous signs of the President at their tea potties?

On second thought - he should be worried.

99% of this country has had ENOUGH of the antics in Congress!

Eric Cantor called the 99% movement as a mod. Then went
on to say they are dividing America. But Mr. Cantor overlooked the pitting of
Americans against Americans in his full support of the Tea Party.

I've SAID this and Ron Paul is pointing it out (note: a DOUCHEBAGGER will not admit it): If you piss enough people off, you can wave your 'morality of the free market' flag straight to the 'guillotine.' This is not a judgement, but a statement of obvious fact. Any country can get to that point. If you look at Greece, if I were a wealthy person, I'd be scared and stop acting like an a-hole. Maybe I'd run away.

Here in AMERIKA, ther's a couple of problems with that strategy. First and foremost, the wealthy are supremly a-holish. They continue to yell at people without wealth instead of shutting the Hell up. Second, if a nation this size turns around, you can count on those wealthy people being hunted down WHEREVER they go, including other countries.

So talk it up, fat-faced Douchebaggers. Because you are only digging your own grave with your mouth. The smart move would be to get intersted in solving the problem instead of being a complete turd. But you have yet to show that you even have the most meager interest in any actually conservative value.

There's something happenin' here, what it is ain't exactly clear, there's a man with a gun over there, tellin' me, I got to beware ....

Battle lines bein' drawn, nobody's right if everybody's wrong, young people speaking their minds, getting so much resistance from behind ....

Obama Diary:

The Gavel: Today marks the 273rd day of Republican control of the House of Representatives. In 273 days, they have not passed a single bill to create jobs. Instead, House Republicans have repeatedly voted to end Medicare (while providing tax breaks to Big Oil and companies that ship jobs overseas), passed legislation that destroys nearly 2 million jobs (that’s 10,000 jobs lost every day), and pointlessly manufactured crisis after crisis-creating economic uncertainty and hurting small businesses and the middle class.

____________________

Let's be clear here. Those who support the Republican Party have zero interest in the working class; they have zero interest in those who are out of a job.

They're sell outs to every person in this country who just want - not a hand out - but a job and some freakin' integrity in the corporate world.

And in our government.

Why would ANYONE support these SOBs in the GOP?

Why is it that every time a Republican leader opens his/her mouth, one need only look at the US Constitution and see what freedom they are trying to limit:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

.............................................................. U.S. Constitution, Amendment I.

Since the Republican Party, in general, has the inability to actually read the entire U.S. Constitution, let alone understand it, it should come as no surprise.

Why is Ron Paul the only Republican praising these protestors ? Is he the only one who truly takes his oath of office to heart, i.e. to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States ?

Derek- I posted this yesterday:

Maybe it's time to bring out this oldie again:

Think vaccines for a little while, here. To avoid a big hit of, say, diptheria, you receive a little tiny dose of the very disease you are trying to avoid. The body uses that to develop a resistance (or, a 'systemic fix') to the disease. Vaccines work very well.

Now, back to a society (the body) and socialism (the disease). To avoid a full blown case of socialism, maybe administering a very small dose of socialism is needed? Then, the 'body' can circumvent the 'disease' in a more acceptable manner?

I'm telling you- if this wealth disparity is not corrected in some way- even a little bit- there is going to be a huge case of socialism forced upon ALL of us, whether we want it or not.

"Some in Washington have actually condoned the pitting of Americans against Americans," Cantor said of the protests after accusing the Obama administration's policies of being an "assault on many of our nation's bedrock principles."

Gee, I have to wonder what Eric Cantor thinks of the policies of President's Clinton, Carter, or Kennedy? Mr. Cantor is going to have to realize that a large percentage of Americans do not share his vision for a right-wing version of America where an ever-smaller group of wealthy individuals control an ever-larger share of the money supply, all under the guise of conservatism, militarism, and backward-thinking, while everyone else is walked all over in search of the greatest-possible profit at the lowest-possible cost. If you are someone whose vision for America includes freedom, fairness, and justice for ALL Americans, vote Democrat. If we can elect enough forward-thinking liberals to Congress we can make great progress toward a better future for all of us.

The only suspected pre-existing symptom is lack of intelligence.

While I was initially intrigued by the occupy protests, it has become hard to give support to such an unorganized group protesting against intangible platitudes, i.e. "corporate greed" or "wealthy arrogance". It's like protesting for "world peace" at a boxing match. Sure, these people might bring attention to an issue, but they have come armed with no cogent goal and no realistic means of changing policy.

As I have sifted through comments from protesters about what they want to accomplish, all I hear are ill-conceived requests that all debt be wiped clean or that a desirable job simply be created out of thin air, or again, simply mass proselytizing with regards to some apparent flaw in the system, more of an idea than an actual reversible situation. I'm not saying that there isn't something worth protesting about here, but whiney college kids without a plan isn't going to get it done, because they don't even know what "it" is that they want to get done. How is anyone even going to know when corporate greed gets taken care of? What is it going to look like? What policies are going to be enacted? Why don't the protesters try to answer those questions and lobby for a more specific change that might help them achieve something.

I agree that many of those protesters don't actually know what the true purpose of the protests are about. HOWEVER, what is funny to me is that the focus of all these politicians is exactly that..."Well these mobs don't even know what they are yelling about".

Guess what? That is because the Republican'ts and Democraps and Tea Baggers have screwed everything up soooo bad in this country that the average American has no clue where to even start fixing it. I'm glad to see this number of people increasing around the country because at least they are getting out and letting all of these POS know that they aren't taking it anymore. First step is to get the citizens out there, then they can start getting organized and making plans.

Instead of shooting all these people down because they aren't organized, how about recognize that they could be the beginning of something much bigger, if they could only be organized. They need someone who IS able to start bringing an aligned purpose to the cause.

People say that the Republican congress has done nothing in two-hundred some-odd days. Well that's more than the current Democratic president has done in the last THREE YEARS. Tell me, aside from Obamacare, what he has done from his campaign that he promised? Still in Iraq, still in Afghanistan, Guantanamo still open, economy still faltering, debt is now massive. Maybe if he'd come up with something that makes sense the Republican congress would pass it.

Obama likes being called President, but he doesn't like being president. It's time to get a businessman in the White House, one that has experience in taking something that's completely a financial mess and making it a success. Life-long career politicians just don't get it.

Now, I don't have a problem with these protesters. I'm tired of big money on Wall Street and Big Corporate bosses. It's ridiculous. Stop paying CEOs so much, and maybe the company can afford to hire more people? Seem logical to me.

And campaign reform is a MUST. Now days it's all about who has the most money to spend on commercials, ads, 'stumping', etc. It's a dammed popularity contest.

Tea Partiers have been busy trying to divide the country but, that didn't seem to get Eric Cantor's concern alarms up, did it? Until I see Cantor's statement in full I and no one should comment on a "presentation" of his statement by news media. We get into trouble doing that all the time.

I did saw Erin Bernett interviewing protesters and they seemed to have little knolodge of the economy or what they were protesting, except their frustration. She asked a protester if he knew the banks paid TARP back more money than the recieved and he said, "No-o".

Now a question for blogers. Did General Motors pay back their govt loan?

Who encouraged banks to make No Document loans?

"Brought to you by...Bank of America, Citibank, Goldman Sachs and CapitalOne...What's in your wallet? ...we'll be there soon!"
By the way, how much do they pay you to post their dribble?

Dear Mr Cantor --- You are a government official --- The people in the street are "The People" which technically is your Boss and pays your salary. They are not a Mob, they are citizens protesting! If you cannot understand the constitution, and your responsibility to those "People", then you are not fit for the office you hold. You and your cronies ran on a platform to bring jobs to Americans, yet I have seen no progress in your promises. Instead I have seen the opposite where you have eliminated American jobs by reducing government thus reducing American jobs and outsourcing them, and breaking up unions in favor of the aristocrats of this country. These Aristocrats are not the ones providing currency circulation in this country that generates the majority of revenue and increases the economy. "The People" in these mobs, and the 99% of Americans are the ones that provide the highest amount of revenue generation in this country through purchases and living expenses in their daily lives. Not to mention these monopolies, mergers, and investment favoritisms to Aristocrats, have created a hostile buisness environment where middle class stores (and local job providers) are blocked out of the markets. So Mr Cantor, if you cannot do your job, and the only thing you can do is deride decent american citizens when they protest injustice, then I suggest you find another job, because you damn well are not doing what you said you would do..! You and your cronies should all be fired!

The country is simply fed up, in a very non-partisan way, with Congress and its polarized ways.
Some other bits to think about:

    1) This movement is fueled by the social media --- Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc. This means that it has massively instant communications. All the traditional folks are the silly and jingoist sound bites on the evening news. I'm not sure that the traditional politicians have the slightest clue as to what is going on.

    2) Another thing that is happening is that much of the communications of the Occupy Wall Street Movement are content-heavy. That is, they tend to convey lots of facts, statistics, reports, etc along with their calls to action. The one thing politicians do not want is the public looking at facts.

    3) This movement is not being seen as the major reason that the Koch brothers' attempt to push Christie out there as "their" candidate failed so badly. The OWS people threatened to turn the Tea Party into a miniscule joke and co-opt completely independent voters who are also tired of this Congress. Christie very wisely withdrew. He correctly foresaw that there is serious social upheaval in the works.

    4) The OWS movement had already achieved considerable size and was spreading quickly in NYC when someone noticed that it was by far the largest such demonstration with absolutely zero media coverage. Apparently this was so big a deal that all the major right-wing owners of the media (for example, right-wing Comcast owns NBC) send down orders to black the story out. And it was blacked out until it was finally starting to spread to Boston and other cities.

    5) The GOP is trying to portray it as young hooligans --- just as Britain did recently with its east end riots recently. But if you go look at the arrest records (which are open to the public) in both cases you will see that that is a mus-characterization. Those arrested in the 700 in NYC include people as young as 3 and as old as 87. All races are represented in about the same proportion as the NYC population and the genders are about evenly split between male and female.

    6) The media are saying that the OWS movement has not yet found its voice. That it is doomed to failure because it doesn't have clear goals and isn't cohesive. That is just media jive-talk. The OWS message is clear. They want the influence of money on politics to stop! They want the party polarization to stop? They want the corporations, if they want to be treated legally as persons, to go to jail where appropriate! They want politicians to put their Country first! Just because they blame Congress does not mean that they don't blame both parties in Congress --- they do!

    7) I am not usually an Obama-basher. But Obama has made a major political blunder with his crackdown on the legal medical marijuana industry after promising that the rights of the states to regulate it would not be disturbed two years ago. This was a bad move with the OWS movement still picking up steam. a) Most people strongly believe that this is a settled issue --- and that medical marijuana should be allowed. b) Many people believe that this is being done so the Obama campaign can get millions in big pharma donations. c) Many people see this as a clear example of the federal government imposing itself where it shouldn't. d) Law enforcement agencies in the states with legal medical marijuana will be forced in whether to follow their own state law or to cooperate with the feds. They will not cooperate in this case. This will substantially weaken the cross-border drug enforcement efforts. e) Hard-pressed police departments are very likely to say that the federal government can have it all and that they should completely get out of the narcotics law enforcement business. This is a major Team Obama screwup. Obviously this had been planned for a long time --- IRS regulations were already interpreted and masses of printed materials had been pun in place. But a smart President would have slid it to the back burner until the OWS people were off the streets.

"Eric Cantor called the 99% movement as a mod. Then went
on to say they are dividing America"

Mr. Cantor, you should know the concept first hand at what it takes to divide America. That is what political parties do best. If I were you Mr. Cantor, I would crawl back under your rock and stay there until someone rattles your chains to bring you back out.

Politician: A branch of the weasel family that feeds off the pockets of the human race. A self serving condescending animal. Also a form of vermin. A greedy two faced back stabbing animal that has plagued humanity for generations. It's traits are: Thinking it is above all laws, takes pay under the table from anyone who has it to give for favors, thinks little if nothing of those that elected it into office, could care less about what humanity thinks of it, loves high pay and large benefit packages for itself even if humanity has nothing left to give.

How to rid oneself of such vermin: Recall it back to the state from which it came, and boot from office without pay and benefits. Replace at your discretion.

If the Wall Street protesters are fed up with financial fat cats using BIG money to influence politics, I agree with them. Obama's cosy relationship with G.E.'s Immelt (G.E. is the recipient of huge corporate welfare) and Solyndra (see Nancy Pelosi's Brother in law) needs to be investigated further. Also, remember that Wall Street contributed more to Obama's 2008 campaign than they did McCain, and were rewarded with HUGE taxpayer-funded bailouts. Yep, this has to stop.

If, on the other hand, the Wall Street protesters are simply whining about the disparity between themselves and the rich, I have a suggestion for them:

    1. We redistribute college GPA scores so that everyone gets a passing grade. No one NEEDS a 4.0, right? Some people are just naturally smarter than others. How is that fair? Simply average all the GPA's in the country and arrive at a single score that all students get. What do you think the education system in America will look like in 2 years? Hint: It can be used as a microcosm for the economy as a whole.

    2. Change the tax code to a more fair system so that those who use and benefit the most from taxes pay more of it. For example, why force a single middle class man with no children to pay 30% of his income in taxes while a married couple with 4 kids attending public schools, riding school buses, getting free lunches, and requiring health care pay less, and in many cases, get REFUNDS GREATER than the amount they pay in.

    3. Remember that the wealth of Bill Gates and Warren Buffet costs you NOTHING, but the high rate of procreation by the poor and unmotivated WILL cost you EVER-INCREASING taxes, even if you're middle class.

    @Kayner,

There already is a "term" for elected officials. It is 2 years for Representatives, 6 years for Senators (indefinitely renewable) and 4 years for President (with one renewal.)

When people declare that they want a limit on the number of terms a Congressperson can have, there have been many polls and studies to find out exactly what they do want. It turns out that over 80% of people are happy with their state's Congressmen continuing to run indefinitely. What they really want is for long-serving Congressmen from other districts and states to have term limits. So they say they want term limits when what they really want it to get rid of Barney Franks, or Eric Cantor for that matter. People just want term limits for politicians they don't like.

And my message to you is simple: "If you don't like Franks or Cantor, move to their district/state and vote against them. It is obvious that their own constituencies like them because they keep re-electing them. But just shut the f++k up about other people's elected representatives."

Pat Boston,MA-You are wrong. Actually Big Oil companies spend billions of dollars here in the us the every year. They create hundreds of millions of jobs not to mention the shut downs every year for maintenance that can create as as few as 500 and as many as 2500 jobs depending on the work to be completed. Plus all the construction work that goes on that employees another million (as a minimum)jobs with the contractors, the engineers and the suppliers. How do I know this because I work for a contractor that does industrial work for oil, gas, power and yes wind.

Do you know that jobs for wind are going away do to the high cost to create this clean wind energy. The government say that the sites owner has to build the windmills and substations than there is no guaranty that this wind energy will even be put to use. So the companies that pay to construct these windmills a putting a stop to it because it may not be used. Do you also know that Big Oil is how is was building the most windmills in the USA. You see now how you are miss informed.

Also what jobs bill did the president and the Dem's pass when the had all of Congress to pass anything they wanted. The answer NOTHING. This president only wants to pay back his big campaign contributors by squandering our tax dollars on companies like Solyndra, one of his major contributors. So before you start saying that the Rep's are the reason this is happening think again. They are just trying to control the over spending of this president. See below and it will put it in prospective for you.

    * U.S. Tax revenue: $2,170,000,000,000
    * Federal budget: $3,820,000,000,000
    * New debt: $1,650,000,000,000
    * National debt: $14,271,000,000,000
    * Recent budget cut: $38,500,000,000

Let's remove 8 zeros and pretend it's a household budget:

    * Annual family income: $21,700
    * Money the family spent: $38,200
    * New debt on the credit card: $16,500
    * Outstanding balance on the credit card: $142,710
    * Total budget cuts: $385

Missed you! I have been unplugged for the last week. I have an issue with the 99% thing. I believe it is the 56% or so that we need to focus in on. That is the disapproval number for the President. It is not the 99% of the country that are not millionaires plus that are dissatisfied. Most in this country believe we are on snowball ride to hell with this economy. Most of us do not blame Wall Street. Most of us blame the over reaching arm of the regulations of the government and the inability of this force to get out of the way and let loose. Oversight to the extent we have it is strangling the job creating private sector.

That makes two Republicans now that are supporting the OWS crowd.

First, Buddy Roemer has been saying that the #1 problem in Washington is the corrupt corporate money that controls our reps. The Occupy crowd says the same thing.

Now, Ron Paul is supporting them... which pisses off Fox News and the Tea Party. LMAO. I love watching them turn on themselves.

So now the line is being drawn, right down the center of the GOP. Do you support Roemer and Paul, who agree with OWS and their pursuit to give the government back to the people? Or do you support Cantor and the Tea Party creeps who want to keep the government controlled by lobbyists and corporations?

Choose your side. Do you want a government for the people, or for the corporations?

    2. I agree with those who would take the Tea Party over these folks any day. Why? Intelligence and common sense levels exhibited by the Tea Party. The Wall Street folks are quite lacking in this area.

    Congressional Reform Act of 2011
    1. No Tenure / No Pension. A Congressman / woman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they are out of office.

    2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security.
All funds in the Congressional retirement fund shall be moved to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.

    3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all American TAX PAYERS do. (not the people who pay no taxes)

    4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

    5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.

    6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.

    7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen are void effective 1/1/12.
The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen. Congressmen made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work.

    8. Congressmen and Congresswomen running for Federal Office may only accept campaign contributions from legal US citizens who are registered voters in the state where the candidate resides. Unused funds may not be “gifted” nor used for any other purpose. Unused contributions MUST BE TURNED OVER to their State Treasury. NO OTHER SOURCE OF FUNDING WILL BE PERMITTED.

    9. SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP ORGANIZATIONS shall not be permitted to offer or gift or any other form of remuneration to anyone representing “THE CITIZENS OF THE USA.” Pamphlets and reports may be made distributed if they are first introduced to the public.

    10. No contributions may be made directly to party organizations from ANY SOURCE.

    11. No contributions may be accepted from ANY non US citizen or ANY foreign country.

    12. Presidential Elections shall be funded through the US Treasury, equally, to the final viable Presidential Candidates. All unspent money shall be returned to the US Treasury. That is so you cannot BUY the Presidency.

    13. The penalties for breaking the law shall be mandatory prison time, with no parole for any reason. Trials shall take place in the State where the crime was committed.

    14. Crate a law that simply states, if you do not pay taxes, you are bared from making political contributions for national, state, and local elections.

Create a law that simply states, all investments with a positive return will be taxed by a 28% rate. These funds will be immediately sent to the IRS along with the owners social security number. Then in the event that an individual or corporation pays no taxes, the prepaid taxed profit will not be refunded.

This is how WE THE “POORLEY REPRESENTED” PEOPLE FIX CONGRESS

Corporations were able to produce more than before the recession began, while paying their employees less. Total business profits totaled almost $3.5 trillion, or about one-quarter of the entire economy.

"President Obama nodded toward the protests as a sign of broader frustration over the state of the economy."

The protests by young people in New York and other major cities are actually nothing more than frustration with the lack of JOBS, which in turn leads to a sense of hopelessness. This is somewhat ironic because Obama ran on a platform of “Hope and Change”, when the reality is that he has delivered a feeling of hopelessness for our young people, and many others.

To avoid getting blamed for his lack of progress, Obama has found a convenient 'bad guy' in the form of the 'so-called rich', which he defines as anyone making more than $200,000 per year. Since that leaves out 90% of the people in the country, it's a populist message that has the effect of 'Demonizing' anyone that is successful, which is the exact opposite of the American ideal of working hard and making yourself successful.

This 'Class Warfare' rhetoric is nothing more than another example of Obama's attempts to 'redistribute wealth', but history has shown time and again that reducing opportunities and incentives leads to LESS growth, not more. The formula is quite straightforward – If capital is accumulated and invested in economic growth, it generates more growth and jobs. If capital is confiscated (thru taxes) and redistributed to those who do not save, it is spent, making less capital available for growth and job creation. This is simple Economics 101.

In his heart, Obama is still a 'Community Organizer', demonizing those who have succeeded under the guise of 'helping the poor', but this policy of 'wealth redistribution' was tried in the Soviet Union and China and found to be a dismal failure. Ironically, China is still a nominal communist country, but the reality is that their economy is perhaps the most purely capitalistic in the World – leading to the fastest growing major economy in the World. While the World is moving towards a more capitalistic economic system because it creates a 'bigger economic pie' for people to share (and more jobs), Obama seems stuck in the past by trying to move us towards a more centralized control of the economy, and the results were predictable.

With all the jabs and jokes seen on this website over the past couple years regarding the supposed crazy activities of people attending TEA Party rallies...this "Occupy" thing is a real treat.

Already over 700 arrests...sparring with police officers...and a different goofy reason for the "protest' from just about every single person interveiwed. Of course the "move on" and 'SEIU' goons will start pushing some sort of unified theme...to try to narrow down the motives coming from the assorted knuckleheads so far.

I am far from being considered a "TEA Party" person...but the behavior and message I had seen from them at past rallies offer a very stark contrast to the buffoonery that's being seen on the nightly news over the past couple weeks.

Joe - "I remeber the good old days when I went to demonstrations in the seventies. Good times were had by all because it was really all about the booze, pot and the babes."

I guarantee you Joe, not all the people, are there for "the booze, pot and the babes." There are too many different people from too many cities getting involved, however it does have the propensity to become a force to be reckoned with, because there are so many young people involved. If somebody harnesses their energy, and they spend the next year preparing to go to the polls, I think it could very well spell big trouble for many incumbents, republicans have the most to lose if that happens republicans. I don't know how many people are there for "the booze, pot and the babes.", but I have not seen anybody complaining that we weren't cutting taxes on hedge fund managers and corporations fast enough, or deep enough. I have not seen anybody complaining that we don't have more elected officials of the US government signing pledges to a single man because his political favor is more important than their oath of office. I have not seen anybody complaining that we are not cutting regulations on the banks wall street and the corporations fast enough, so they can be free to create jobs with wild abandon. Joe this might be big trouble for the republican message, because I'll tell you Joe some of these people look too angry to be somebody that was been smoking pot, and getting laid.

He actually was told by his teachers that our government perpetrated 911...! Among other crazy nutcase sh*t... like all of our food is laced with mind control drugs... OMG it is incredible yet the media and the unions jump on the bad wagon... heck the freight train of lies that these foolish kids are swallowing. People have the right to protest and I hope this is just the beginning. Good news is that it's spreading from city to city. I watched a video of a few of these people breaking into a banking exec's home. I would have unloaded every clip I have into that group of people then move to my Marine Corps Combat 12 gauge.

"Some in Washington have actually condoned the pitting of Americans against Americans," Cantor said of the protests after accusing the Obama administration's policies of being an "assault on many of our nation's bedrock principles."

Like corporate theft and greed? CEOs giving themselves undeserved bonuses while firing workers and moving their jobs to China?

Great points! The only issue is that these protesters are not nearly as educated as those 'tea baggers'. The Tea Party can articulate those positions...and has. Why would the left ask for meaningful reforms that reduce the burden of debt and taxes and increases the stability of the market to the point jobs will flow? Seems if they truly wanted equality, they would pass a flat tax. The rich would pay more (9% of a million is 90 grand... 9 percent of 25000 is only 2250). Get rid of the Fed? Why would they ask for that? That's what the Tea Party wants.

Seems the differences between the Occupy protestors and the Tea Party are:

    1) Education

    2) Solidarity in a plan of action that drives the protest

    3) The Occupy folks are the proverbial 'useful idiots' Marx talked about

    4) All those other things like ...being employed... paying taxes ... backing candidates... and most importantly...

    5) Going after those who actually made the mess...the Politicians.

    Hi Derek,

Let take a look at your points:

    1. Education: First of all what leads you to believe they are not educated, many are college students with degrees to apply to the non-existent jobs. Some are out of work business men and woman, you know when corporate profits are gained through cutting the bottom.

    2. Solidarity. Let look up the definition. union or fellowship arising from common responsibilities and interests, as between members of a group or between classes, peoples, and a community of feelings, purposes, etc. So are these protestors protesting for a common interest? I believe they are.

    3. Not really answerable since it's your opinion, but Marx also said "In capitalism man exploits man, but in communism, it is the other way around.

    4. Apparently you have a role call of all the protestors, which no one else is privy to that states that none of the protestors have ever worked or payed taxes or voted. Would you mind posting it?

    5. Going after the real cause, the politicians. Are the politicians currently addressing the protestors, then I guess the protest of Wall St. worked? I mean we all know the banks had nothing to do with the stock market crash. They were looking out for all of us. Maybe we should track down Graham (R-Texas), Leach (R-Iowa) and Bliley (R-Virginia) for their lobby provoking repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act and ask what they were thinking. I'm not quite sure what their kickback or promises entailed but it would be interesting to find out, afterall the banking industry invested over 300 million to deregulate, to help the American people. I Love them.

    Iray801,

    RE: your post #1.52

Well Iray, you seem to be putting your mouth in gear before engaging your brain. I'll be nice as I can to you in my answers to your question as to "what has Obama accomplished except for healthcare reform?".First I would like to address your statement with a question of my own for you. Why in the world don't you at least attempt to do some due dilligence (homework) before you put out all that BS? All you have to do is google: 'Obama accomplishments while president' and presto you get a list of FACTUAL answers! I have done YOUR homework for you. Below are some of the results, if you want answers to YOUR OWN questions. Or was that just 'hot air' in your post?

    http://www.jackandjillpolitics.com/2010/10/president-obamas-244-accomplishments-part-4/

    http://thepoliticalcarnival.net/2010/03/30/president-obamas-accomplishments/

    http://3chicspolitico.com/president-obamas-accomplishments/

Now really, Iray801, I sincerely hope that you AT LEAST read ONE of the above references and citations! Take your choice or look further, there are litterly hundreds of pieces dedicated to informing people, like you, who have no idea what has been accomplished over the last 2 years and 10 months since President Obama took the oath of the Presidency. If this isn't enough for your satisfaction you can wait till his second term ends in 2016 and there will be more accomplishments, and I'm sure some failures. Anolther way to look at this. Just think of the progress which could have been made if only the GOP/Tea Party would have at least tried to me OUR president 10% of the time instead of opposing EVERY move he made and some they opposed only to spite YOU and others like YOU! Have a GREAT day and God Bless!

From what I have seen of dedicated tea baggers in the news vine, some of them spell cat KAT. I only hope that the 99rs attract 99 percent of the people or enough of a majority to keep Obama in office, and show the GOP in congress and the senate the door.

Biggest thing I noticed when these demos started,is they had an idea, but no plan. They seem to be all over the map with thier cause...(1),No jobs...thats a good reason to be pissed....at BOTH parties......The; 'shovel ready in 2009'party,and the;' low taxes save jobs party'.....Government doesn't create jobs.,unles your looking at the TVA,or the CCC back in the '30s-'40s...The best thing government can do is get thier overbearing,job-killing regulations out of the way, create a workable tax environment, and ENFORCE it....even on the 'rich'.......(2),Banks having free reign to do whatever they want, knowing some clown called them'too big to fail'.....Banks are supposedly regulated, but there seems to be a different standard for anybody with big money.....just like politicians,,,,every one of them is a multi-millionare.(BOTH parties)..they have no regard for laws,as they feel they are above it....How many members of this cabinet should have been put in prision???..the biggest most obvious one is now in charge of the IRS.....'ol Timmy.........the list is not a short one.....repubs have also shortchanged the country by making this no-tax pact with Grover......The real big thing I see happening is these demonstrators don't see they are now being used by Obama's manipulators to make this a demonstration SUPPORTING Oby......They don't see that the unions have been sent in with scripted agendas to 'march alongside them'.....These demonstrators may have started out with a good idea that said BOTH parties aren't listening, but now it's being bastardized into a campaign tour supporting one of the guilty......and Oby is loving it.....(but he's still got his nose in the air to see how this wind blows....Cantor and the rest of the politicians (BOTH parties)need to listen to the complaints of these people, and sort out the cream from the crap, and address thier complaints....not just dismiss them....kind of like;...no,...we're not giving free Ipods out.......but yes,we need a better, more fair tax structure.........When it's all said and done, they will get alot of;Yes we can do that for you....from the campaigner in chief.....until he gets re-elected,.....then they'll get forgotten, and tossed aside as they are no longer needed......kind of like how military people are treated..............U.S.Army Disabled Veteran

What about this situation do you not understand?

We're fed up with your obstructionism, your foot dragging, your opposition to EVERY program that might be of some benefit to the majority of the people of this country. We're fed up with YOU and your party of "no".

What you are seeing in the streets is the beginning of the final act of this tragedy and if you don't start listening to the people you will almost certainly find yourself out of a job or worse.

Be a part of the solution Mr. Cantor, not part of the problem.

That starts by working WITH the President, not opposing him at every turn.

    What is so complicated?

Per the proposals that I heard mentioned and which I agree are these simple promises and REFORMS

    1) make it illegal to accept any money from third parties only public money open transparent money to those seeking public service including cutting the yearly pay to $150,000 with the same public health plan as the rest of America no opting out even if you can pay for it - the same as the rest of America.

    2) no money earned from the "rubber chicken circuit" or any other source to promote the campaign only money from a fund set up for elections from taxpayer money, free media time for debates.

    3) Repeal and Reform "Rigged Trade" the low super low tariffs we charge and the high tariffs we pay - fix it !!!

    4) Stop these wars of leisure for the Billion of dollars and the nightmare that should be the American Dream - STOP these for Profit Wars the gun merchants and the rest are fleecing the American People as never in our common history never and NOT ONE - I REPEAT - NOT ONE PERSON IS IN JAIL - NOT ONE

    5) Stop the subsidies for Oil, Energy, Ethanol and the list goes on forever the Mega Corporate Farms paid to not grow.

    6) Put back the money into the Social Security Citizens Contributory Fund now put the money you borrowed back NOW that is the peoples money not yours NOT AN ENTITLEMENT

    7) Take you greasy sticky little hands off of my pain into Medicare - I paid for that I seen the money come out my paycheck for decades #'sa 6 and 7 are ENTITLEMENTS and Stop Saying They Are Entitlements !!

    Post Script # 1.143

I was interrupted numerous times lol whatever errors typos are my fault # 7 should read that Social Security and Medicare are NOT ENTITLEMENTS are a payment in small parts of the lump sum the money extracted from my paycheck for decades is nothing less than part of my retirement plan and I as many millions of American families the over-whelming number of Americans are only getting partial payment of the large sum our contribution matched by our employer has grown too.....for years and years at or about total of 15% of gross income add it up with interest.

Plus it is my understanding that my wife's large sum of money or mine we are not entitled to that money it is forfeited to the government the survivor and our heirs get zero of our money? That is our families money to help our kids with a home or education why is that money forfeited?....is there a reasonable answer out there?

Let me get this straight. These people want the government to tax the rich (even more than they are). Create a program/bill to create jobs. In the bill to create jobs they give incentives (let's call incentives what it is, MONEY) to companies who hire people (essentially the same rich people/big business who were taxed to begin with), and liberals love this idea. That is awesome! I'm not sure how you all were conned, but I've got a bunch of stuff to sell you.

Do you all realize that trillions of dollars of rich people's money is invested in the stock market? And you also must realize that the purpose of stocks is to flow money into companies giving them extra capital to expand their businesses, which in return, in some instances, pay a dividend back to the stock holder? Which is odd, because to protest wall street would drag the economy down further. Making it more difficult for those same protesters to find jobs. Again, that is awesome.

I really object to the fact that almost every comment 'collapsed by community' was in support of the protesters. Yeah, a couple skirted the line of propriety, but some were completely polite. They just said what the lunatic right doesn't want to hear.

If you fall to that side of the political fence and still pretend that you believe in democracy, then show it by tolerating opposing points of view.

It's clear that those who support the protesters do believe in free speech, because no right wing comments have been 'closed by community'. Think about that.

Like I said earlier, this thread is hysterical, especially when you consider code violating Feisty getting restored. (OR that many votes, so she has 300+ sheeple friends, big deal.)

The funniest thing of all is those of you who support these clueless folks protesting Wall Street doesn't say too much about you as well. I would be embarrassed if I were you, supporting people like that. While I support their right to free speech, I don't support their lack of intelligence or common sense. And NO, having a PHD doesn't automatically give one common sense or an understanding of what it takes to restore our country to it's former greatness. Just look at our President, all the law and theory has not helped him in the least bit when it comes to successfully leading our country. As for the college age students.....here is the result of our declining schools. They too have no real life experience to understand the US is not some utopia. Every time you give something to someone for free, it has to be paid for by others. Until the get that simple concept, there is no hope for them. And no, they don't deserve a high-paying job fresh out of college, they have to work their way up, just like everyone else before them.

Collapse away Liberal haters, your hipocracy is so predictable..........free speech for only you...

Why would ANYONE support the GOP?"

    Well said.

So far I have not been motivated to join the Occupy protests. A lot of people I know have been.

Why exactly is there a requirement from so many here that there be a unified message? It's like it is expected to be partisan. In this case it seems like there is plenty of dissatisfaction to go around without pigeon-holing and dividing people so that they are easily marginalized. The general anger at the ineffectiveness of congress is shared from people across the political spectrum. The Tea Party (or at least those who claim to speak for them) may not know it, or embrace it, but they make up a large part of this 99% as well.

What I *really* think some people are scared of is a unified front that is pissed off beyond the Republican/Democrat divide. Screw needing a cohesive message that picks a side. So many want to control the narrative, be it the president, congressional politicians, or unions. I think those of us who are watching and potentially involved in shaping popular perception of the movement are doing a disservice by falling for any of their characterizations. Let the people get together and communicate. Don't force divide them into the left and the right. Maybe a popular pissed-offedness can bridge some of that gap. It's obvious it's drawing from a wide swath of the populace since I have seen those involved described alternately as unwashed bums, or well-dressed yuppy college kids, or PHDs and out of work professionals. Ron Paul, as he sometimes does, is echoing this common sense idea. If people are mad at how the government is being run, be it left or right, it implies there is some common ground to be discovered, and changes to be made that benefit the majority. That should scare anyone maintaining the status quo.

I agree that compromise and working to clean out the negative influence that special interests have on both parties would be the best for the country. Something has to get that momentum going and the 99ers might do some good to that end. I am an optimist but we cannot sit and let the country be taken over by the special interests and let the working class die. The 99ers may not have it right or have their ducks in a row yet but I believe that their intentions are good and well meaning. They are not communists they are the future of our country. Something has to give or this situation will continue to expand to what end is going to depend on what our political representatives in this country do to alleviate the true and depressing situation our country finds itself in.

If there's no clear message to these protests, maybe there's room on Wall Street for some Tea Party tents? That'd be a weird marriage, but kinda cool. It could be like a reverse-convention, where everyone could rant about which political they are mad at most.

If those in the Tea Party who have stuck to their original goals of really wanting the government to represent the people who elected them and not the ones who take money from the Koch Bros, then I say, why not join the 99ers who want the special interest out of government. There may be a place for those in the Tea Party who have have felt betrayed by their leaders who sold out to fit in nicely with the 99ers. After all we are all Americans and if those two groups can forge a compromise then maybe our leaders in Congress can.

        Why protest?

Just do not buy and convince others not to buy, the goods and services of those you are angry with. With no money they go out of business.

Seriously Look at the ones protesting - Every single one of them are using products manufactured and sold to them by the ones they are protesting against.

Same with the Tea Party protesters- They claim to hate big government - Yet they buy the products and services of those that financially support the politicians they are against.

The president is the problem. His advisors, his cronies, his party, and people like you are part of the problem.

I've often heard it said that "if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem". So if you're not part of the problem, where is the solution your party is offering?

Your party says taxing the wealthy is part of the problem. "Tax the job creators?" you say, "Insane!" Of course there were a lot more jobs back and the economy was strong before their taxes were slashed by GW Bush. But according to your party, it cannot possibly be part of the problem.

No; your party believes gay marriage is part of the problem. Sharia law is part of the problem. Unions are part of the problem. Illegal immigrants are part of the problem. Abortion is part of the problem. God not being in public schools is part of the problem. English not being our official language is part of the problem.

Your party is expert at pointing out all of your perceived problems, but how is it that ANY solutions put forward by Republicans are lopsided and only EVER benefit the very, very wealthy? Why is that?

Give me a single example where a relatively small number of corporations (or as the Supreme Court refers to them as... "people") didn't get stinking wealthy off any plan Republicans have implemented over the past three decades while the majority of Americans suffered?

                Fascinating. The protests that the MSM have worked so hard to ignore appear to be big in the minds of regular Americans. With supporters of the OWS protesters garnering as many as HUNDREDS of votes it's obvious too that the GOPTP is firmly on the wrong side. The best Conservatives have been able to come up with is to claim no one knows what OWS even wants...that they don't know themselves. Another Conservative lie. If you want to know you need look no farther than www.occupywallst.com . If the MSM won't tell you waht's happening in New York find out for yourselves at www.occupywallst.com . Below is a portion of what you'll find at www.occupywallst.com ;

Our voice will no longer be ignored. There are too many things wrong with this world for our voices to be silenced. You know this. We know this. This is why we are here, why we grow every day.

Occupy your homes. You own your home, a callous bank that split ownership of your home into hundreds of parts, redistributing them across the world under false ratings does not own your home. Fifty times as much speculative trading as commercial trading goes on each day in America. You are in debt to people who make money by moving money from place to place using computers.

You have a right to shelter. No one can take that right from you.

Banks are able to restructure settlements constantly, they receive billions and billions of dollars so that they can stay afloat for long enough to steal your property from you. Do not let them. Do not leave your house. If the police come to steal your house and deliver it to the 1 percent film them and show the world and then join us. If we are not already occupying your city, your town, bring a sleeping bag, a pillow, and contact us. We will help you find food. We will help you sue for shelter. We will find each other. We will grow. We will build - city by city, block by block.

We stand in solidarity with homeowners across the country and the world whose homes are in the process of being stolen by faceless conglomerations motivated only by profit. We are the 99 percent. We will not let you steal our homes. We will not let you deprive us of a basic right, shelter, so that you can buy a home you do not use. We are here. We are growing. And we will not be moved.

                http://occupywallst.org/article/day-seven/

This is NOT about Right v Left. It's about Big v Small, Wall Street v Main Street. Wall Street is strangling Main Street. It's strangling the hopes and dreams of average Americans. We are the 99%. We will no longer be ignored.

Under Article 4, Section 4 of the U.S. Constitution, the federal government must abate "foreign invasion." The Dream Act and other amnesty schemes aiding and abetting illegal aliens violates this law and federal mandate by condoning and rewarding "foreign invasion" and not abating it. Therefore, such proposals or new laws are highly illegal even if created by Congress. However, there is a much more serious legal issue at play with the Dream Act.

In the event the Dream Act is passed, it will signal to all Americans that their federal government has gone rogue and no longer respects or adheres to the U.S. Constitution. Hence passage of the Dream Act is a very serious offense against the American people.

This would be a violation of dozens of federal laws, not the least of which is "high treason."

Washington, and our President fail to uphold the law to all illegals, picking, and choosing which illegals they want to uphold the law on. It seems their above the law in Washington.

Nikki, I'm willing to have a debate over the correct procedures for and levels of immigration, but your equating it to a foreign invasion is an incredible leap of logic. The DREAM Act would establish PROCEDURES for normalizing the undocumented who are already in this country, hardly the same thing as failing to pick up arms against an invasion force. Your position is inflammatory, xenophobic, and fails to recognize the reality of spending billions on border security while millions have been here for many years and entire industries (vegetable farming, meat packing, much of the building and landscaping trades) are virtually built on the availability of cheap, undocumented labor.

TAKE BACK OUR COUNTRY FROM THE RICH.

Sounding more and more like 1917 Russia and we all know how that protest turned out. Tens if not hundreds of millions murdered, starvation and famine as one 5 year plan after another failed, relief finally came when the system collapsed under its own weight and was replaced by, wait for it......capitalism.

Does America really need to repeat that miserable failure of an experiment that all of Europe is now realizing was a huge cluster-flub?

                  #1.168 - Mon Oct 10, 2011 9:20 AM EDT

It is not that bad, yet socialcapitalist, but it will get there unless the demands of the 99 percent are considered fairly. As I recall from history Dragoons crushed the protest cruelly killing many starving protesters. A country must not protect the rights of the richest 1 percent to the exclusion of all others. That path leads to full blown riots and civil war on a scale the country did not see in the 1860s.

                  * U.S. Tax revenue: $2,170,000,000,000
                  * Federal budget: $3,820,000,000,000
                  * New debt: $1,650,000,000,000
                  * National debt: $14,271,000,000,000
                  * Recent budget cut: $38,500,000,000

Let's remove 8 zeros and pretend it's a household budget:

                  * Annual family income: $21,700
                  * Money the family spent: $38,200
                  * New debt on the credit card: $16,500
                  * Outstanding balance on the credit card: $142,710
                  * Total budget cuts: $385

Home economics has little to nothing to do with the budgeting of the world's military superpower. We print our own money and can declare murderous wars of pre-emption to get the economic opportunites we wish for our selves. Families do NOT have those options, unless they are willing to be criminals and go to jail or prison for doing so.

I think both the TP/OWS are groups of people who are fed of up with Big *: pick your big and powerful entity that has failed the majority in the past couple years, even if it was an organization you previously supported. Most democrats would have to recognize that the current state of the politics has failed this country (regardless of your faith in the administration). And who can deny that big business hasn't been too great on our national countenance of late (even in the last administration)? Large unions in the past have done great things, and also brought great things to their knees. And the socially influential, from media conglomerates to activist organizations, have polarized the debate (among other things). It's completely understandable to be mad at all these counter-aligned forces that have, near as I can tell, grid-locked our economic prosperity. That is an essential obligation of our Constitution. Something has to give, something has to be pulled back, and a common voice is starting to arise out of the demands.

"It's not scarcity, it's a distribution problem" (Naomi Klein).

Out of a great sense of urgency and leadership, the President put together an American Jobs bill that will work, that is doable ~ and he is taking it around the country to tell us all about it.

President Obama said yesterday that among all the other benefits in it for us and the economy, the AJA is "an insurance policy against what is happening in Europe". Economists are saying the Euro recession might make our own economy worse by end of 2012, or push us right over the edge. They say if Europe collapses, so will we.

We know this is so, so what is GOP doing about the potential recession right now? About our recovery? To prepare for a new recession? Cantor says the AJA is "dead" and offers no alternative. Clearly GOP is not doing anything for recovery, not doing the serious hard work that would be needed to head off the risk of a deeper recession.

We know about long congressional rigamaroles and how long it takes to get something signed into law, so by any measure GOP is not preparing for a potential European crash. Furthermore from all they are not-doing and have been consistently not-doing for a long time, it would seem they are paving the way for a future crash.
And it gets easier to say the words: Republican leadership is hoping for the US economy to crash.

Republican leadership is consistently resistant to remedies against a US crash. And their negligence seems shot through with purpose. Mr. Cantor vows he will not permit a debate on the AJA, let alone bring it up for a vote in the House. No, we're not dreaming, folks!

GOP wants to stop Obama from getting re-elected. We know because they told us till our ears bled.
Crashing/hurting the economy enough to stick the President with the blame, is one phase of their goal. GOP doesn't support job creation and has voted down 3 Jobs bills so far this year. No, we're not dreaming.
Does GOP care about the plight of the 99% or will they continue to feed us to their corporate masters? One in four of our children lives in poverty today. When we can create 2 to 3 million jobs and grow the GDP by 2% via the American Jobs Act, fix and modernize our prehistoric infrastructure and schools, and help our small businesses, there's no time for excuses.

Naomi Klein explained it's as though the 1% has their own separate economy & our two realities parted ways a long time ago. Since 1985 when middle class median wages started to stagnate, the 1% have been making up their own rules. Without action we poor country mice will only get poorer and poorer with no end in sight. Thank goodness the 99% are joining together to protest the ludicrously unfair income distribution in our country.

After all this time the 99% is saying Stop. The US is a very rich country, home to the wealthiest group ever in the history of the world. All the resources we need are right here for an amazing century of growth. At our side in this moment is a President who has the capacity and determination to take us anywhere we want to go. Why should we the people, let our future go by?

The OWS wants to stop all this exploitation, level the fiscal playing field so we can breathe again equally. Note that GOP is trying to reverse the Financial Regulation Reform that President Obama signed into law. Note that GOP is planning to halt the nomination of Richard Cordray as first ever Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The Opposition fritters our time and our tax dollars away saying No, instead of creating millions of jobs or preparing to avert a recession.

To paraphrase, Jared Bernstein says the American Jobs Act will address our immediate problems and will have profound effects on our economy for the medium and longterm; our markets are working very well and interest rates are low; investors are "screaming at us to borrow and engage in temporary stimulus" to grow our economy; extending our payroll tax and our unemployment insurance is key.

We had a catastrophic recession after keeping taxes low on the rich for many years. The middle and working class have taken a long hard beating and we will not, we must not be doomed to shoulder another round while the 1% do business as usual.

The AJA has broad support across this country. Now is the time for those who have prospered mightily and enjoyed an outrageous innings at our expense, to do their part and put us back to work.

Walking to work today, I saw a headline that said a "charitable foundation," that promotes entrepreneurship, was donating 3 million dollars to Maine which could result in the creation of 10,000 more jobs in our state over the next decade.

Turns out this "charitable group" is the Blackstone Foundation, founded by a former head of Lehman Bros., Stephen Schwarzman, who has a reported net worth of 5.9 billion dollars.

As much as I appreciated this "charitable" giving, I'm having suspicions. Is it possible the fat cats are finally doing the right thing, in helping America grow the economy, instead of just keeping the cream for themselves, or is this a well-timed publicity effort to get the 99 ers off their backs? And if a mere 3 million dollars can generate 10,000 jobs, then what could the President Jobs BIll create?

As for the protester's on wall Street. They are nothing like the TEA Party movement. They are lazy children wanting freebies and a chance to air their ignorance. I say let'em do it. It's just more bad exposure for the left. Since Obama took office they have racked up quite the resume.

Another nail in the coffin of his re-election bid.

I could be wrong on this, I'm doing this from memory - a shaky proposition at this point in my life. However, it seems to me that Blackstone was a hedge fund and the tax rate for the grand prize winners - hedge fund managers - was and remains 15%.

While I generally support free enterprise, there is no harm in peaceful protest.

This is a great opportunity to launch a dialogue about the fiduciary duty of the corporate boards and the general responsibility of business entities. Abuses have occured, and continue to occur. CEOs and upper management can make large salaries, but only after they have met responsibilities for safegaurding domestic employment, return of profits to shareholders, and environmental ethics.

You folks still don't get it, do you. All of the republicrats have sold out your jobs, taken your rights, your homes, your jobs, your parental rights, They have destroyed your schools, your scientists, turned health care into an auction and pissed on the constitution. If America's young people want a better country, they first must realize that standing around eating sandwiches or breaking windows and stealing TVs from their neighbors fixes or changes nothing. We outnumber these criminals by 99 -1. This is our country. They are just the hired help.

Step 1 - Term limit on Politicians

                        Step 2 - Eliminate lobbyists

Step 3 - Make taxes fair - Why is it that you must work to pay taxes in this country? So if you sit on your fat az and take gimmies all day, you don't have to pay taxes? But then you can take my money that supports you, and go buy cigarettes? No, what needs to happen is a tax on ALL purchases. That will make a huge dent in our problems almost immediately. The rich will pay more because they buy more, and more expensive items. The middle and lower class pay less but we also are forced to make common sense decisions. Those that want to collect their $400 for each kid while they sit at home and do nothing, don't hurt the rest of us because they WILL be paying taxes now on everything they purchase. Someone explain to me how this would NOT work?

                        Backhouse -

VERY well put. Glad to read you quoting Naomi Klein. She really, really nailed the issues in The Shock Doctrine - regardless of political viewpoint, this is a book anyone concerned with our country's issues should read.

One of the driving factors in many of the uprisings taking place this year around the world is the terrible economic inequality - the difference between the top tiers of those societies and the average people. When the employees of a company earn less in a year than the senior executives take home in a month, something is wrong. It isn't justifiable. The emploiyees are those who actually create the wealth of the companies. The alleged "talent" of many senior executives is an accident of birth or connection - they know people in their same stratospheric circles, and feel entitled. How many actually earn those incomes? Not many.

Further, such excessive compensation packages actually steal from the shareholders. Image the consequences if shareholders - little ones as well as major investors - stood up at the annual corporate meetings and demanded changes.

Changes in laws governing taxes on stock options, capital gains, and the immense "bonuses" handed out were made during the Reagan Regime. At the same time, labor laws defining "full time" employees, allowing long-term hiring of "temporary" employees, and such niggling items as how to compute overtime pay were also changed, allowing companies to effectively chop workers' pay and benefits.

The issue is not one of "soak the rich." It's one of justice and equity. To the extent that the wealthiest of this society should indeed pay a reqasonable amount of taxes - helping keep the society which made them so wealthy functioning - the issue is not "punishing success" as the right-wing ideologues love to claim.

For 30 years, the right wing has been assembling a largely un-regulated, corporatist state. Many of the regulations of which the right complains are worthless since the regulators have been friends of the regulated. They either eschewed any enforcement, put incompetents into key jobs to ensure nothing would get done, or interpreted the laws as loosely as possible to favor their friends on the private side. Not only Naomi Klein documented this - so did Thomas Frank, in The Wrecking Crew: How Conservatives Ruined Government, Enriched Themselves, and Beggared America, and Matt Taibbi, in Griftopia: A Story of Bankers, Politicians, and the Most Audacious Power Grab in American History.

The protests are not only on Wall Street, either. They are taking place all over the country - in Tampa, where the GOP is to hold its convention next August, peaceful protests sympathizing with the "Own Wall Street" events were endorsed by the city's mayor.

The coming election is a major watershed. If the right wing ideologues gain any more power, the United States will undergo a coup d'etat that will completely destroy the nation. it will take place in the national legislature. This election, at all levels, is about the very definition of this country.

I just love how desperate MSNBC and the libbies have become. Actually trying to make the Wall Street protests into a liberal only protest, when actual people being interviewed are from all walks of life, all different political affiliations, all different ages, and most of all are as upset with Obama carrying signs that read Obama is Wall Street and other negative comments.

Give me a Tea Party rally over this protest anyday! At Tea Party Rally's you have all ages, mostly employed voters from all over the country, average American tax payers. At this Wall Street thing you have unemployed kids that are mostly confused about what they are 'protesting' but they are getting fed by good ole George Soros and Huffington Post... and some are even being paid! Probably the only income they'll make until the pizza runs out and the party burns out. Our future leaders, kinda gives you a queasy feeling, doesn't it? Stirred up by neighborhood agitators. They aren't working for themselves and the obama regime hasn't been working for the country for 3 plus years. The O must go!

You are not alone in calling for a national sales tax. It is an absolutely awful idea, however, for reasons too extensive to write down here., However, I addressed the topic months ago in a 'Vine column that explains why a national sales tax - or, as they often term it in Europe, a "value added tax" - is regressive and ultimately an extremely costly tax. Here's the link if you care to check out the details:

                        Kayner,

A consumption tax disproportionately puts the burden on those who can least afford it. if you make $1m, yes you can afford to spend 300K of that frivilously. But if you make $12k and MUST spend that money to live than you are going to be taxed on essentially ALL of your income whilest a rich person would only be taxed on 30%. Yes i understand that %'s are not true values but also consider that the rich person can also work to reduce their burden through people who will be trained in avoiding such taxes.

Mr. Cantor should be concerned. In fact he should be afraid, because what we are seeing is the beginning of a revolution and if Cantor, Boehner and McConnel don't wake up and smell the coffee pretty soon they and their fat cat constituency may get to meet the modern equivalent of "Madame Guillotine." I certainly hope not, but I can't help but be reminded of my favorite line from one of my favorite movies, "A riot is a terrible thing, and I think it's just about time we had one."

We the people are fed up with the party of "no". We are fed up with gridlock and obstructionism. We the people are taking our country back. When 1% of the population controls more than 50% of the wealth it's time to hit the bricks and take our country back. That's just what you're seeing the very beginnings of in the Wall Street protest movement.

Hello boys, did you miss me? We're baaaaack!

Be afraid Cantor, be very afraid. You have reason to be.

MSLabMgr, that is exactly what has happened here. For a solid 1.5-2 weeks, these people were completely ignored by the media. Suddenly, everyone from Cantor to Bill O'Reilly is ridiculing them. These people aren't going anywhere, and their numbers grow each day.

                        Bill Thomas -

You perpetuate the myth that the Tea Party is some sort of spontaneous movement of ordinary folk who have recently decided to take on the politicians.

However, that is a lie put forward to mask the reality.

The Tea Party movement was funded and promoted in the background by the Koch Brothers, Grover Norquist's Americans for Tax Reform, and a host of other corporate interests. it is a typical so-called "grass roots" organization assembled by professionals - and I know just how that works, because for years I was one of the professionals who set up similar movements for various corproate and political clients.

Besides recent news stories exposing the details, there is also the startling background information developed by a pair of authors who were looking into the role of religion in the U.S. They wanted tosee what, if any, role religion had in the Tea Party, and made the following discoveries:

                        - Most Tea Party adherents are while, male Republicans

                        - Most have had long histories as very active in politics (not the alleged "newcomers" to politics put out in your mythology)

                        - Most are fundamentalist Christians

                        - Most are "hostile" to Blacks and immigrants

Sorry buddy, but the Tea Party is exposed, and it isn't a pretty picture at all.

To those of you that keep saying there needs to be term limits on politicians, there are, they are called elections.

If you don't like who the people vote for maybe what you should really being saying is, there should be rules on who gets to vote. And what I really thing you are saying is there should be rules on voting if somebody believes something different than you.

My favorite part of what these people are saying is that everybody deserves a living wage, if they work or not. (umm, how are we going to pay for that?) and secondly when they say everybody needs to pay their fair share, what exactly is that number again?

John A - you are absolutely correct. The Tea Party is a group of people manipulated by the likes of the Koch brothers to spread hatred and discontent. They are racist and backward in their thinking.

@Doug: You want to see liars? They're named Tan Man Boehner, Mitch McConnell, Eric Cantor, and their ilk who take unlimited campaign funds from Big Oil, Big Pharma, Big Agra, Koch Industries, while they shut down every possibility of reprieve for the American people.

The Wall Street demonstrators are not a "nail" in the president's re-election bid. Quite the contrary, they are a groundswell of youth activism that will ride the POTUS to a second victory over the current crop of Republi-CANTS.

If the Wall Street protesters are fed up with financial fat cats using BIG money to influence politics, I agree with them. Obama's cosy relationship with G.E.'s Immelt (G.E. is the recipient of huge corporate welfare), and Solyndra (see Nancy Pelosi's Brother in law) needs to be investigated further.

Eric Cantor sounds like a typical republican. If a group of people agree with him, they're "protesters". Any group that expresses views he doesn't like, however, is referred to as a "mob".

Apparently Cantor thinks that the right to protest exists only if you say things the republicans like.

                        BenSnead, Sally, et al -

I most certainly have been Tea Party rallies, although those that I attended in Florida were rowdy, unruly gatherings at which planted acitvists primed with ugly sogans led disruptive chanting. And I certainly gave my primary source, at the very end of the post.

But you guys are following Karl Rove's playbook well, dismissing the facts and using slurs. The truth is there - the Tea Party is a "front" for the corporatist right wing.

And, oh by the way - in 2010, only 22% of voters attributed their ballots to the Tea Party. That percentage has held relatively firm in polling since. The Tea Party representation in both houses of Congress is only about 5%, and 8% in the House GOP contingent. It is a divisive, regressive minority accounting for far more influence than it deserves.

Leave it to opportunistic politicians (read Pelosi / organized labor / etc.) to try to "hop on board" the Occupy movement. I say "Buzz off!" This is not a partisan issue per se. It is a movement of the regular guy / gal. The increasing population that feels themselves being shoved out and displaced. Many wealthy Americans, both conservative and liberal, are responsible for the continued shift of wealth from the middle class to the minority at the top. This will be the case as long as we have privately funded elections, special interest money and politicains that can be bought.

Since the collapse cowards shut down group 1, I will repeat:

The real problem is that the jobs were shipped overseas due to the "Free Trade" agreements, government incentives to send jobs there, and over regulation here in the US. So the same people that are protesting, who are the same people that wanted all of these things, are responsible for causing the problem by supporting and voting for people who are still trying to open more "Free Trade" agreements and push more regulations.

Sorry no job for you; however somewhere in northern Alaska, there is a polar bear that stands less of a chance of ever seeing a human being invade its territory. I guess when they were told that someone had to pay the cost for us protecting polar bears, they weren't aware that it would be them.

There's no guarantee that states simply because you have a college degree you will get a job in your field. So get out and pick up a shovel, a hammer, a lawn mower, a spatula, or a broom like the rest of us. You pushed out the good middle class manufacturing jobs. Deal with the results of your decisions.

Things are only going to continue to decline so long as we are on this same path. The AJA that the president is pushing is only another 1/2 trillion dollars that will be gone in a few years but might provide a bump up in the economy long enough to get him reelected. It does not address any of the core problems, in fact he has 3 more "Free Trade" agreements tucked in there that he claims will spur job growth. Why he believes that after our experience with NAFTA and China is a mystery.

Finally, these people are out there as a coordinated effort in part due to the President's comments about the rich. Like it or not, it's the truth.

                        @John A.

What worries me the most about the Tea Party is not that most are fundamentalist Christians. I know a raft of good people who are also fundamentalist Christians. But over 80% of self-described Tea Party adherents are DOMINIONIST christians. This is a substantial group within fundamentalist Christians who believe that:

                        a) The separation of Church and State is a myth and that the Founding Fathers intended for the Country to be ran according to Biblical Law. (Presumably this includes stoning to death diners at Red Lobster as well as two of Newt Gingrich's wives.)

                        b) They believe that the Founding Fathers were closet fundamentalist Christians. Even though virtually all the Founding Fathers were Deists and regarded Christ as a well-meaning historical figure only, they believe the Huckabee contention that almost all the signers of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were either ministers or deacons. (In truth only one was.) The Founding Fathers were of their times and in those times most educated men were Deists.

                        c) They believe that only "born again" fundamentalist Christians who also believe in domionism should be allowed to run for public office. No Methodists or Mormons or Presbyterians or Hindus or Muslims need apply. They especially believe that the offices of President and Senators should only be filled by domionist fundamentalist ministers.

The rise of the dominionist movement in this country is scary. Both Bachman and Palin are dominionist. These people really want to completely disenfranchise every one who does not believe exactly as they believe, including virtually all Christians.

The Free Market requires Geopolitical Stability to operate, which is only guaranteed through the efforts and deaths of US Soldiers, US Embassy administrators, and US Laws as a benchmark.

The Free Marketeers demand reduced cost for the Geopolitical Stability they require to do business around the world and a reduced cost for National Infrastructure that they require to do business domestically within the USA. To cap off this insult to the American people, the Free Marketeers demand no regulation be placed upon their enterprises whose fraudulent business model was made legal through legislation presented by bought-and-paid-for (mostly GOP) politicians - a fraudulent free-market business model that has stripped the wealth completely and made homeless some of the hardest-working Americans EVER.

These free market corporations have no Pledge of Allegiance to the USA noted in their Articles of Incorporation - and even have utilized opportunity to set up divisions or subsidiaries based in Dubai, Qatar, Grand Cayman Island and elsewhere to do business with sworn enemies of the USA (Halliburton, Koch Industries, Conoco-Phillips and General Electric all proven to have done business with Iran), even with nations who actively engaged in killing American Soldiers!!!

YOU CANNOT ASK AN AMERICAN TO DIE FOR A CORPORATION AND THEN TO SIT QUIET WHILE THAT CORPORATION DESTROYS THAT VERY SAME AMERICAN'S FAMILY AND PUTS THEM OUT INTO THE STREET.

Contrast between poor and rich, by definition, must exist within capitalism. But, does it have to be that big of a gap? Remember that the capitalism pyramid has a base and a top. 90% of the middle class and poor make up this base. If you make that many go hungry you will end up with revolutions. Does the gop understand that?

Although I don't smoke and rarely drink....I know that I could NOT afford to buy a pack of cigarettes at the current price. 80% of the price goes to taxes, and they keep raising it to try to get people to stop smoking. Even people on welfare pay taxes in one way or the other....when they buy food, gas, cigarettes, etc. We ALL pay sales taxes on the items we purchase. I don't think anyone is getting away tax-free in today's society.

I am having a mental battle between the definition of "work" and the definition of "job." I wonder if the folk in the streets of New York have thought about the difference. If they have thought about it, I suspect most of them would be at their places of employment.

I tell you what Skipnicholson. I don't have much but what I have worked for I worked hard for. I am already taxed to the point we can barely afford to eat. You and your liberal buddies show up at my house demanding to redistribute my stuff, and I'll have something for you.

Sounds like the protesters and the millions that support them have got some people scared.

Where there is fear, the truth is not far behind.

If you can "barely afford to eat" nobody but the GOP is coming to take your stuff!

The Democrats plans are for raising the taxes 4% on those making over $250,000 a year.

The GOP on the other hand wants to raise taxes 3% on all wages under $106,000.

Those are the FACTS maybe you should quit listening to fat drug addicts and read a little more.

I think peaceful public protest is great.

Out here in liberal California, in our city of approx 400,000, they held a 1 hour peace protest. They setup a Facebook page, and then forgot to post where and when the event was being held.

1 hour. They said 60 people showed up, then revised it up to 150.

They have another protest scheduled at an outdoor mall this Saturday. 1pm (so the stoners can sleep in). It is also a 1hr protest. I guess they want to go shopping after.

                          What a joke.

I find it very interesting that Cantor and his right wing scumbag buddies had no problem with people showing up to political events armed, republican candidates screaming about violent insurrection.

However, a bunch of unarmed folks voicing their opinions nonviolently and Dems asking for the wealthy to pay 4% more on wages over $500,000 is somehow class war fare.

                            Pure Hypocrisy!

I love the liberal line "They can afford it.". I can't wait until this country slips further down the toilet, and the uber poor who pay nothing in taxes, yet depend on handouts are calling on you to pay for them because you can afford a McDonald's Happy Meal and they can't.

I doubt the desparately poor (uber poor as you put it) will be coming for me and my happy meal. More likely you and your stock portfolio.

Considering that consumer spending accounts for 70% of our economy, you should be on your knees THANKING them for shopping.

At the end of the day, customers generate money for business... customers generate the need for jobs. It doesn't matter what the tax rate is, or regulations... without customers you have NOTHING. Even at a zero tax rate, no customers means your business will fail. This is the most simple business concept, and you have demonstrated that you do not have the mental capacity to understand it. God help us if people like you take control.

So, John, a liberal poster on Newsvine seeds an article about staying on the government tit, and you quote it as fact? LOL!

Your little friend there ONLY mentions "welfare".....as in the actual program of welfare. It doesn't mention foodstamps, housing, child care subsidies, free school lunches, free school breakfasts, subsidized tuition, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, or any other number of handouts. And yes, don't fool yourself. SS and Medicare/Medicaid ARE handouts. VERY few people pay even a small amount toward the actual amount they receive back.

This all must be disgusting to watch from other countries.

Where they have to work very hard 12 hour days to make less than a part timer at Walmart makes here.

They have to watch people here whine about how hard it is. And complain because they are not rich.

Meanwhile, even the "poor" in the US have more than the average human on the planet.

So now the left is trying to get you to focus on what someone else has.

Look around you. Now think back to what the middle class had here in the 1960's.

There's no comparison. We are rich compared to what we had back then. Bigger homes, more cars, electronics, medicines, procedures - we take for granted that while the wealthy here have more than we do, we have more than nearly everyone in our past and the world present.

So isn't this really just jealousy? How are you really hurt by Bill Gates being rich? You pay lower taxes because he pays billions more than he could ever use in Gov't services.

The lefties want you to look at someone else's piece of pie instead of your own. Why is that?

Because the pie expanded, and everyone here has more now.

Would that have happened without our corporations?

Check out Greece if you want to see how these protests will "help" us.

Of course Cantor is "concerned" about the protests! It means people are seeing the true agenda of the TPGOP and corporate masters, and that his job and presidential aspirations are in danger! It is interesting that he says:

"Some in Washington have actually condoned the pitting of Americans against Americans," Cantor said of the protests after accusing the Obama administration's policies of being an "assault on many of our nation's bedrock principles."

...when it is actually the TPGOP that is "pitting Americans against Americans" and leading the "Assault on many of our nation's bedrock principles"! He's got it backwards, and shows exactly where he stands--in corporate pockets!

The TPGOP has read 1984. They are masters of Newspeak. They know that if you repeat a lie often enough, people will believe it. They also speak the opposite of the truth. They are rich, white men who speak with forked tongues.

Their excuse is emerging markets. China also has a huge emerging military which was funded by U.S. corportions building factories in China. Too late to be just talking about G.E. The U. That doesn't exactly comport with the facts, Ms. Christine. In the House, 215 Republicans and 82 Democrats voted for the Iraq War Resolution. Six Republicans, 126 Democrats and 1 Independent voted against it. If you meant that the House was Democratically controlled, that is also incorrect. In the Senate, the Republican vote (for/against) was 48/1, Democrats 29/21, and Independents 0/1. With the Independent caucusing with the Democrats, it would be accurate to claim that the Senate was Democratically controlled, but not the entire Congress. Your statement about the entire Congress would be accurate if written as: "A bipartisan vote of the Congress was necessary to take us into Iraq."

In short: Both parties deserve their share of blame/credit for Iraq.

Christine: First of all, how do you know the health plan won't work? Are you a fortune teller? According to many economists, it will work just fine once it goes into affect. Secondly, the President has taken FEWER vacations than President Bush....can you explain that? And, I don't think GWB "walked" to Texas for his vacations. Thirdly, where did you hear that the POTUS dog has it's own plane...how ridiculous that is and it certainly shows your level of intelligence. If the POTUS family dog goes on vacation with the family, the dog travels WITH the president in Air Force One. Lastly, President Obama has NOT stolen from the Social Security fund to pay for his healthcare bill; he has NOT doubled our debt (although it seems that way because GWB failed to add the two wars that he started, plus his unpaid for drug plan, to his budget).

You really need to check your sources before you start spouting out lies and misconceptions.

There is plenty of blame on both sides of the isle but to say

.....it was a Democratic Congress that voted to take us into Iraq.....it is a Democratic President that has doubled our debt and stolen from social security for a health care plan that will NOT work and stolen from the American people so his spouse, spawns, extended family and friends can go on extravagant vacations and then fly the dog on its own plane.

is complete drivel, absolute BS, and shows that you have spent far too much time on FAUX News. There can never be an honest debate when so many have spent so much time listening to half truths and outright lies from either the far right or the far left. We in the middle see through most of the rhetoric and it is clear the TP/GOP has clearly decided that any damage done to this country is acceptable so long as they defeat Obama. Cantor is the poster child for what is wrong with the GOP. The country needs good fiscal conservatives but the conservative model we have gotten is instead undermining America.

I find it very interesting that when demonstrations are happening in other countries it is Democracy in action. Everyone in Congess encourages the demonstrations to continue. Now when the same movement starts here some how those involved are suddenly slobs, hooligans, idiots, etc... The demonstrations suddenly are not calls for change, but mobs that must be dispersed! Maybe everyone in Washington should remember what they told the governments in the other countries, listen to the people!! Maybe it is time ALL of Congress resigns!

                                  DiDi and George,

I work 1/2 block from the White House, I see and here all the news every day. I do not listen to only one news station nor do I read only one newspaper. I do believe both sides are to blame for quite a few mistakes in this country today but I do know that it is quite accurate that Slobama did take money from Social Security to the tune of $150,000,000 on the back end for a health care program that was shoved down the throats of the American people and nobody on Capital Hill read the bill prior to reading it. Additionally, it was reported and investigated quite extensively about Bo the Dog. I am all for change because I believe greed is running rampant through Congress, Wall Street and the banking industry.

Irrelevantly, the Patriot Act was 98-1 in the Senate. Is there any reason not to be cynical?

When 700+ people have to be arrested at a "protest"...there is a problem with the attendees. They'd get much hassle and much more decent press coverage if they held their rally in a park. The can act like jerks for whatever reasons they'd like...but obstructing other Americans walking on the sidewalk or trying to drive thru the city is simply not right.

Perhaps if the protesters were organized and centralizing their protest in a park they would be presenting a bit more of a cogent message. As of now, they've put forth nothing but a mixed message of "free eduaction"..."pay my college loan"...and hatred for the dreaded "rich".

They aren't exactly coming across as a civilized group trying to get their message out. Instead, viewers are waiting for the drummers, jugglers, and circus freaks to arrive.

I agree! I also don't get republicans, the tea-baggers did a similar thing and he applauded them as real Americans with real concerns. However these people are labeled as a 'mob' in his eyes.

Republicans are pro-life but applaud in the nomination meetings executions and letting those without health insurance die. Then boo an American solider (they support soldiers!) fighting for them cause he is gay.

The Republican party are either ignorant or hypocrites. I can work out which!

I have no problem with calling a bunch of people who tried to align President Obama with Hitler as political terrorists. Do they realize Hitler was a fascist on the Right of the political spectrum.

The other side of the story is the TeaParty supported the very things that the people are protesting on wall street. Not taking the TeaParty to task over this by senior Republicans THAT is hypocrisy at its most shameful.

WIth the group on Wall Street I DON'T see them clapping at letting people Die if they don't have health insurance or booing a Solider of the US armed forces while defending the interests of the US overseas. However they too are not totally innocent by any stretch of the imagination. I just feel more embarrassed by how the Republicans are carrying themselves. Lost my vote there.

Here is what we need to do:

                                    getmoneyout.com

Believe it or not, there is one common thread on both sides of the political debate and that is we all oppose special interests’ influence on politics and policy decisions. Democrats, Republicans, Tea Partiers, Libertarians, right-wing, left-wing, liberals, conservatives, you name it – they all agree on this one issue. Imagine that!

Do something about it. Go to: getmoneyout.com and sign the petition then pass it along. Be a part of the solution. Support a Constitutional Amendment to ban all political contributions, whether from corporations, political pacs or individuals.

All of us, no matter what our affiliation, need to take back our government.

I said it once before. Elect our politicians for life terms. Every 4 years have a confidence/no-confidence vote on each politician. If a no-confidence vote is registered for a congress person, the Governor of that state appoints a temporary person to fill that seat until a new life time congress person is elected to that seat. Congress people will quickly begin to realize if they don't start representing the people in their district or state, they will be sent packing.

No campaigns, no PACs or other big money contributions. Just a confidence/no-confidence vote every 4 years.

HMM. When Tea Bigots stood at town meetings, foaming at the mouth, screaming at representatives to prevent them from interacting with rational constituents, they were OK. When Dick Armey, a member of America's neo-fascist right wing leadership hiding here in Texas provided them with money, it was OK. When these Tea Bigots came with their guns to rallies, you all were OK with it.

But when protestors, fairly quietly gather at the foot of corporate greed, questioning why the money handlers, those who contribute very little of actual production or value to progress or democracy get to avoid taxes 'cause they are the "job creators", the right gets inflamed. Commies? Really?

Those people have every right to protest and have been better behaved (so far ... only time will tell) than many TP'ers I've been unfortunate enough to meet on their way home from a rally. Rather than incorrectly assuming they are "Communists", it would be more accurate to count them as unhappy voters. There are a lot of people fed up with how the GOP-majority in Congress have linked the country's fortunes to a very small number of extremely rich people. Don't expect this to go away soon or quietly until the economy improves.

Yes we need to wipe the slate clean. Incumbent out. Everybody must vote against the incumbent. That should send a great message. To bad the people on hand outs will continue to vote for those that keep the meal ticket coming.

If you and your fellow-travelling idiot friends like communism so much, why don't you move your azz outta this country and go live in one of the worker's paradises? There are a few left: North Korea, Cuba etc...You'd love it there.

I think you are talking about yourself. The more I see and hear about small government I'm starting to think they actually mean dictatorship. Go to China Damage123 I hear they don't care about how much you pollute and all their workers make little to nothing. Hmmmm I'm going to have to look up whether or not they have health care or any kind of retirement.

Bill-Austin, You are the only person to frame the issue correctly. These folks in those Wall Street firms are the best Paper Pushers that money could find. They don't create a single dime worth of useful product that one can proudly say, "It changed my life". All they do is bundle the same paper products (mortgage securities, bonds, CDOs, Swaps, CLOs, etc.) over and over and over again until they can't find a foolish investor in the Middle-east or Europe or Texas to buy their worthless Vaporware products.

These Wall Street Gangstas have lobbied hard and successfully to bend and circumvent the recently passed Dodd-Frank regulation. It's time to make them play by the rules and regulations.

We need a robust Capital Markets for raising public and private capital, but not at the insane manner these Wall Street guys behave. In fact, Wall Street folks are the ones who have the Gangster mentality and not the ordinary protesters who are asking for their demands to be heard. I work in downtown and I saw these protesters every day and they are not any mobs or anything like that. These are ordinary folks (young and old) and Eric Cantor know his Republican philosophy scaring the people is over people.

Free speech is wonderful. If Eric Cantor didn't have his head so far up Wall Streets behind, he wouldn't have anything to be concerned about. Fat Cats.

Another fueling point is the Republicans attacking financial reform. Why continue to deregulate Wall Street when their decisions led to the financial collapse.

There are no consequences for all of us, there are for Wall Street. We don't need to do the derivatives trading that led to the break down.

I think we need to stop Frank from doing anything further.....he is responsible for the housing debacle that has the banking industry trying to ruin the good credit of those of us that have paid our bills and lived within our means so they want to punish the rest of us for their stupidity. Barney Frank needs to leave Congress in disgrace, NOW.

Christine: the single largest cause of the current recession was the demise of Banking Act of 1933 (Glass-Steagall) which was accomplished through the passage of Gramm-Leach-Bliley by the Republicans.

Barney Frank had championed not allowing banks to discriminate based on address (red-line) which resulted in the community reinvestment act which some people blame for the housing collapse. However, there is nothing in the CRA which required lending to unqualified customers or the fraud done by many of the major lenders.

Exactly the sentiment from the Chicago Board of Trade, where signs appeared in the fifth floor windows that said "WE ARE THE 1%".

                                              Gerald R. Ford
                                              1974-1977
                                              Republican

As President, Ford named Nelson Rockefeller to be his Vice President, but most of their administration's initiatives were stifled by a Democratic-controlled Congress. Ford can be credited with bills involving energy decontrol, tax cuts, deregulation of the securities industries, and antitrust law reform.

I always thought it was Reagan who started this mess too but Ford got a 7 year start on him when he took over for Nixon after Watergate.

Democracy is a gov't in which supreme power is held by the people. Not by a mob of angry protesters that want to get arrested for disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and failure to disperse. Besides, badp, what we really have is a representative democracy; not a direct democracy. There's a difference, you know.

... and by all appearances, when one says "representative democracy" in this day and age, one really means, "government to the highest bidder."

Slander all you like, but from all appearances the protests are intelligently coordinated and peaceful.

Hate and greed is rampant in government and must be stopped before destruction of our nation.

peaceful?....800 have been arrested so far....that's hardly peaceful....intelligently coordinated?.....they don't even have a coherent message...except the same tired "tax the rich, communism is great" baloney....im sorry but most of these idiots are complaining because they are lazy loosers who want big brother to spoon feed them a life....and it ain't happening....its the pangs of a dying progressive movement desperately trying to find something rally against, so they can feel relevant.

                                                ok so im gay.

peaceful?....800 have been arrested so far....that's hardly peaceful....

Can you provide any evidence that the arrests were for violent acts? Further: can you prove that none of the arrests were questionable in execution? Reports of cops with obscured badge numbers doesn't exactly support your point.

intelligently coordinated?.....they don't even have a coherent message...except the same tired "tax the rich, communism is great" baloney....

Prove it. Find me one message of the promotion of Communism in the voice of the majority of the protestors. Just one.

Oh, you can't? Shocking. The fact is most likely you have no idea of how the protests are being conducted. You're making lazy assumptions.

                                                Shame shame.

im sorry but most of these idiots are complaining because they are lazy loosers who want big brother to spoon feed them a life....

Not even remotely true. I do appreciate the candor in which you share your ignorance.

and it ain't happening....its the pangs of a dying progressive movement desperately trying to find something rally against, so they can feel relevant.

I've said it once, I'll say it again: The opposite of progression is regression. In your short, myopic post, you've exemplified precisely what's wrong with most of the 99% who aren't in support of the movement: a fundamental lack of understanding as to how the middle class is being marginalized by corporate America and "big business."

The sad thing is, a predominant number of people like you have no interest in finding out what the movement is about. You're a willing slave to the status quo. Case in point: you didn't bother even responding to my observation, "... and by all appearances, when one says 'representative democracy' in this day and age, one really means, 'government to the highest bidder'."

                                                I pity you.

The first thing a fascist gov'ment does when there is a protest is send in law enforcement to *cuff-n-stuff* people......and always in front of the news media. This way, when it broadcasts on the evening news, John and Mary Public will see people getting arrested and they will stay home instead of going down there and exercising their right to assemble and address grievances.

That stinking U.S. Constitution and all those *rights* of the people......are starting to cause problems for the political machine and its whoredom love affair with Corporate Greed. It's about time.

Sen Harry Reid saved City Center which include Cosmopolitan and Aria by getting them financing to finish the construction and in doing so saved thousands of jobs and brought hundreds of thousands of tourists back to Las Vegas. Harry Reid got the financing to bring the much needed Solar Fields to Nevada and is backing the High Speed Rail Line between Los Angeles and Las Vegas that will put 35,000 people to work. Most people are not aware of it but because of Harry Reid Las Vegas is making a huge comeback no thanks to our crooked Republican Governor. In answer to your question, Yes Harry Reid has brought jobs to Nevada..think about it.

The problem here is that protesters want to redistribute the wealth, not create more wealth to help end poverty. Being rich is not the problem, corruption is the problem. If protesters can prove that there's corruption on Wall Street, then I say, more power to them.

"No one group must be singled out to pay a higher price." -Ronald Reagan

Why did Reagan say that? Because he didn't want to put Americans against Americans. Reagan knew that rich, poor or even middle class, at the end of the day; we are all Americans. Class warfare is never right and therefore always wrong. If corruption is the problem, then protesters have a duty to prove that there's corruption. Show me the evidence, prove it.

Really? You can find no evidence on your own that their is corruption on Wall St.? Perhaps we define corruption differently. Can we say bad decisions based on greed and not what is best for the company or its staff? Perhaps creating a hedge fund over AIG was not corruption-but it was stupid and those involved should not be rewarded with big bonuses. The same with banks who gave bad loans. Should the borrowers have known better-perhaps-but so should have the banks. The 30,000 people who just got laid off from BOA had little to do with the decision to give bad loans-yet those that did got nice bonuses. Is this corruption or bad decisions? Either way-when funded with a tax payer bail out-it is wrong.

I do not want to redistribute anything and neither do most of the protesters. We want for Wall St. executives who made the decisions that led us into the recession-giving bad loans, reselling these loans, insuring these loans...to be held accountable. Corporations are laying off thousands of workers yet giving those at the top huge bonuses. If these corporations benefited from government bailouts-it is the business of the American people to ensure that the funds "tricke down" as they should-and they are not.

Also, it is only fair for those who can do so to pay their fair share. Close all of the loopholes that allow wealthy people to not pay a high percentage in taxes. It is not about giving "freebies" but about paying for things like wars (2 of which came from Bush.)

America would love to go back to Reaganomics after he fixed the mess Carter inflicted to our beloved country.

So you have NO PROBLEMS with the massive debt Regan created? From WWII on through Carters administration, the debt was reduced from over 130% GDP to just over 32% at the end of Carters term. Then came Regan/Bush, which brought the debt back to over 70% again. But hey, spend a few trillion dollars, and of course the economy will recover. Coincidentally, Carter stopped spending in 1978 due to Republican complaints about the debt...[didn't stop Republicans from spending up the gazoo though.]

The fact is: 50% of the wealth of the US is in the hands of just over 400 families. 80% is in the hands of just 10%. The Middle Class has seen its wages drop consistently over the past 30 years, while their share of the economy has fallen to lows not seen since the early 1900's.

As a result: There is no mechanism for economic growth.

Growth requires a middle class to purchase goods. That demand for goods puts pressure on supply, allowing business to hire more workers to fill that demand.

With the middle class no longer able to spend as much, and with a smaller middle class, the obvious occurs: Growth stops, and eventually retreats.

The class warfare of the past 30 years, instigated by conservative republicans, have killed the middle class, and by extension, have bankrupted the country. This economic state will be around for a VERY long time, until the wealth is re-distributed back to the middle class again. Until then, no economic policy will restore economic growth.

Socialism has its many faults as does any system run and used by people. But here is the problem with Capitalism, if one can make X operating ethically and benefiting people, but make 100X cheating, stealing, exploiting, using loopholes, etc.; which route will be taken? There is enormous fraud amongst the 1% that own so much of the wealth in this country. Who said "Behind every great fortune is a great crime?"

I saw a clip on TV the other night of Reagan expressing that he found it objectionable that a bus driver earning $10 an hour pays a higher tax rate than millionaires. My, how things have changed in the Republican party.

I was thinking that the Obama campaign should just run with that clip and at it's end simply say "Vote for Obama." Now, wouldn't that be a hoot!

Maybe Reagan did have a long, lucrative relationship with Wall Street, natualistrob; but he would've never put Americans against Americans.

He did when he went after organized labor. The middle-class has paid for his inclusion-ism ever since. Yes there is class warfare, unfortunately the middle-class lost.

But was Reagan's point that the tax system / IRS needed to be fixed or that millionaires need to be taxed more?

Workhorse - Reagan put American against Americans when he suggested that some wealth could "trickle down" to the 98%. Why that plutocrat is admired is entirely beyond me. He kicked off the downfall of our economy system by trying to give all of it to the rich. He ran up a huge deficit.

Do you remember the $500 billion dollar bailout after he "deregulated" the banks? Let the corporate criminals steal the money and then ask the taxpayers to make up for it. That sir is Ronald Reagan.

Maybe he should have given it to these protesters who obviously don't have JOBS so they can find something better to do.

So you have NO PROBLEMS with the massive debt Regan created?

Let me ask you the same question, So you have no problem with the humongous, massive, gigantic debt Obama created? You combine all debts that all US Presidents created all the way to Bush. Obama did it in record time, in fact he will be in Guinness book of world record.

Again, America would love to go back to Reagan administration.

Steve Jobs was also intelligent enough to understand that using him as an example of what everyday people should strive to be would be -- by any account -- ludicrous. Pegging one of the greatest business and technology minds of all time as the poster-child for the American dream is ridiculous.

W- Here repeating republicans favorite lie. They love to foget that Bush carried the debt off the books (think Enron) and all the cost of the wars during Bush's time had never been added to the debt. So Bush's debt looks real low.

When Obama became president he thought that it was not right to carry the war debt off the books and all of Bush's war debt got added on Obama's watch and the republicans have been claiming that this was debt created by President Obama ever since.

They always point to how fast the debt has grown under President Obama hoping you don't know the full story.

Lies by omission, republicans are good at that.

He hasn't even tried. He could easily have started a series of TV chats with the public to explain to them how the corporations are screwing them, but he did not. He let us down. He kept the war spending going. He bailed out the rich. He agreed to a continuance of the Bush tax cuts.

Over the past 10 years middle class income has gone down 7% while the CEO's and the top 1% have seen their incomes go through the roof. The Republicans and the Tea Party have drawn a line in the sand to protect that Aggregate Wealth and make sure they continue to get the lions share of the money. My grandfather owned his own trucking business in the 1950's. he was a very wise man, and always said if you want to work vote Republican If you want a hand out vote democrat. that was 60 years ago. just to add something he was an American of Hispanic descent and he lived in Texas. Prejudice against the latino was a tradition then, But he still was successful because he believed in the American Dream. he worked for it and he got it. Another thing that helped him succeed was he only cared about the money in his pocket, not trying to take money he didn't deserve.

People on both sides have a right to make their case one group wants more government the other wants less anyone who demands I comply with their vision is troubling to me but I don't think I am in the majority and don't seek to make others conform to my view. Soon enough the protesters will learn that political rhetoric is nothing more than hot air and BS. Nothing changes but the names and dates.

When WE do it -- as we did at the town hall meetings in the summer of 2009 -- it's a legitimate grass-roots demonstration against the oppression of the federal government. It's a "grass-roots" movement even if it's funded by the Koch brothers and organized by Karl Rove.

Cantor sees them as an assault on "bedrock principles." One of those bedrock principles he purports to endorse is "the right to peaceably assemble." It's in the Constitution somewhere but it doesn't matter to him.

I suspect that the Republican Tea Party working harder to stall any progress and failing to bring forth any meaningful legislation designed to fix ANYTHING could have something to do with it. Oh, how many Wall Street thieves have had to answer for the fraud and collusion that has picked the pockets of nearly everyone in this country?

The right wing has turned into nothing more than a bunch of lying fanatics who have to have it their way or no way.

Here is my unsolicited suggestion to you and the protestors. If you want to take money from the "super" rich. I will give you the list:

                                                                      1. Let them go to the rappers who makes a lot of money using foul language and degrading women. They are big contributors to the DNC.

                                                                      2. Let them go to George Soros, Mark Cuban, Warren Buffet, Oprah, etc...

                                                                      3. Fannie May and Freddie Mac contributed somewhere around 30 million to DNC for the 2008 election despite the fact that they are one of the main reasons why we are in this economic crisis.

                                                                      4. Go to the lobbyists (current and former) working for the Obama administration. They have billions of money combine.

                                                                      5. Unions - o yeah, they have contributed tons of money

                                                                      6. Demand the list of the DNC contributors and I assure you that's were the money is.

                                                                      7. And of course those big DNC contributors from the wall street.

                                                                      • 1 vote

Try giving 50% of what has been given to big dinosaur businesses to the people and maybe the protesters will go home.

Karl Marz would be proud, it's the first step in destroying a country. Then, though it was declared unconstitutional years before, they cam up with an amendment for personal income tax.

Our problem is a central bank that is privately controlled.

                                                                      Nice racket repubs.

You must thing the SS wants the president dead too.
