Subscribe to RSSGOP aides say the Senate will vote today on the president's jobs bill -- the original one that does not include the millionaire surtax and includes the "pay-fors" originally proposed by the White House.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) agreed to let Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) insert an amendment to the China currency bill.
This does not impact plans for the Senate to take up the amended bill next week with the millionaire's surtax. That goes forward.
*** UPDATE *** According to Senate Democrats, Republicans will not get their vote on the president's jobs bill as Reid had earlier indicated.
Reid had said on the floor that he was giving McConnell the option to hold the vote as an amendment to the China currency bill, but Democrats say that will not happen now.
McConnell could still do a procedural vote to try to call up the president's jobs bill - but that's not expected to pass.

Once again, Mitch has overplayed his hand. This is a revenue bill - the jobs bill - and must originate in the House per the Constitution. Because this is a revenue measure, it will also require a 60-vote majority. It CANNOT be passed under reconciliation. Thus, this is little more than a sense of the Senate vote.
If it passes in the Senate with 60+ votes, it goes to the House and Boehner is going to be jumping through hoops trying to decide what is the best course of action. The baggers aren't going to support it. If enough Republicans vote for passage and they are joined by Democrats, McConnell is really in trouble.

There is only one thing I want to know. Why is Harry Reid tampering with the Jobs Bill? It has already been evaluated by the American people and they are in full agreement that the bill proposed by Obama is the one we want.
I nearly choaked when I read the reason for the change and doing the 5% surtax is because, for people in expensive cities like LA, NY, it is impossible to buy a big house for $250,000 or $300,000. These people don't consider themselves wealthy. What the flippin hell is that???? The majority of people, who make less than $250,000 can barely find a place to rent. Buying a house will never happen

I already explained that. The bill - if passed in the Senate with a minimum of 60 votes - still must go to the House. The likelihood of it passing in the House is almost nil. If it passes and goes back to the Senate, the bill's prospect of passage is almost nil without some changes. If it passes with the changes, the bill will go to conference. Then there will be a final vote. That's a whole lot of if's.
The fact is Senator Reid is supplying McConnell with rope.
Pass the American Jobs Act modified to exclude any additional deficit spending and modified to exclude language to repeal State's Rights as enumerated in the Constitution of the United States.
The incentive to businesses hiring the unemployed is a great idea, and the amount of the incentive should equal unemployment insurance benefits, food stamps, and the like, that government would be furnishing the unemployed if they were still unemployed. The credit should be applied on the business form.
We must pass this Jobs Bill, put teachers, construction workers, all the related workers, veterans back to work and lift up our own economy, bringing in revenues and circulate the $do-ray-me back to our Treasury pronto.
This is not rocket science. Pass the American Jobs Bill!
Congress, do your job. Get on it now, or explain your problem with putting people back to work!

Meanwhile, in local news, in addition to fishermen, now Maine loggers are angry with our Teapublican governor. LePage vetoed a bill that would require the Maine Conservation Dept to only hire American citizens. That's right, you heard me, it's not about Mexican workers taking our jobs, it's Canadians. The governor claims Maine mill owners have told him there aren't enough Americans willing to do the logging work, so they are forced to use Canadians.
This comes as news to Maine loggers, who are trying to meet with the governor to set him straight - and all he would offer them was a last minute 6:15 am meeting in Presque Isle, (most of these guys work further north.) I've never seen a Maine governor who managed to tick off so many constiuents from so many different quarters. That's the Tea Party, for you, putting the interests of "job creators" ahead of "actual workers."

The President just explained in a News Conference where he took open questions, that Europe is in deep water and that affects the US economy. Used to be Europe could sell to us and export its way out of trouble, but that no longer applies. Ordinary Americans are watching our budgets and not just maxing out credit cards any more.

But the tea party and republicans do not listen to you even when you write them a letter.( there are a few that do not many)I have written the republican person for our district several times. Get a very nice letter saying that they will look into the matter, and vote on how they find the bill. Big deal after the vote I would see they didn't vote at all how or why I told them. I know others in this area had written them also. I am from a republican district but do not belong to the party and just vote for who I believe is right for the job.Of course I don't say that in the letter, but give all the reasons I am either for or against the bill The parties need to start working together for the good of the people but somehow I can't see it happen.

Reid knows how to bring legislation to the floor of the Senate--he's giving O'Connell a chance to vote down the President's original bill in order to score political points.
But here's the bad news: the Democrats never stick it to the Republicans in the same way. Until they learn to use votes as swords of Damocles held over the heads of senators like Snowe, Collins and the junior senator from Massachusetts, among others, they won't create the needed pressure to get the President's jobs bill passed.
Wait til we see the sausage being made in the conference committee between the House and Senate that will have to reconcile the discordant versions of the jobs bill. Finally, don't forget: the House super-committee has to make progress soon or else the cuts to all government programs, including defense, become real.

Watching congressional republicans trying to make the epa ineffective. For two days the republicans have been saying if these regulations are not defeated then;1) jobs will be lost, 2) it too costly for these companies to comply and 3) these jobs will be shipped overseas. One question republicans is compliance more costly than moving your company overseas? Talking out both sides of the mouth. One republican called these proposals "job creating bills".

I agree. I had a job interview on Tuesday and one of the main things stressed was personal responsibility and ownership (Engineering/IT position). Obama is still talking about what he inherited (aka Bush), Japan, Middle East... if the guy would take at least some responsibility -- its unbelievable.

There is no way that you can be honest about the fact that after almost 3 years, Obama is still blaming everyone/everything else except his policies. At least Bush had integrity and didn't play the blame game.
Look at the latest poll - if Obama were a CEO, the majority say he should be fired. How long can you continue to blame someone else for policies that are your own?

Stop it Cathy. A government job is not a private sector job or even close. Right now it takes the taxes from 15-16 Private sector workers to pay for each public sector worker. If we are ever going to have any hope of balancing the budget we need to stop that lop sided thinking of you and Obama. I'm not saying we can't hire teachers, firemen at some point. But, Let's do it when we can afford them. Realisticly 95% of the firemen in this country are volenteers doing it for free. There is no need to over pay for that job with golden benifits and retirement at 50.....
All the talk about putting local government workers "back to work" is comical. One should never use federal dollars to put local government employees "back to work." That is the very definition of a conflict of interest between the loyal constituents and their vote. There is a reason why Teachers, Fire and Police workers are funded with local dollars. Part of the reason these types of jobs have become out of balance is due to the fluctuations in federal dollars. Create a job with short term federal funding and watch what happens when the local government has to pay the full price a year or two later. No surprise the job is eliminated.

From 2005 - 2008 -Project Gunrunner was a BATF program and began under Bush Adminstration to arrest straw purchasers who would smuggle guns into Mexico.
2009 Obama's administration began Fast and Furious this is a separate program. The ATF launched Fast and Furious but used Project Gunrunner Funds. The ATF wanted to go after bigger fish, not the straw purchaser. This program is the one that allowed guns to enter Mexico with out tracking them.
You notice how every time the Obama Administration gets caught in something, they always blame Bush, or at least claim it started under Bush so it must be Bush's fault.
Ammend the bill. A lot. There are a few decent ideas, and a lot of bad ones.
I'm all for strengthening the middle-class. Problem is, a lot of folks seem to make middle-class synonymous with poor and it ain't so.
Investing in UI is NOT a middle-class investment. Sorry folks. Investing in infrastructure projects to small businesses-only, is.
So you could see where the Prez and I differ :D I don't want to give money to the rich, unions shouldn't matter where federal procurement is concerned, and the poor's fortunes are tied intrinsically TO the middle-class.

Wish people would educate themselves on both sides on how federal precurement works and what the Davis/Bacon act does... not what you have been told. What prevaling wage really means and how it comes about how often it changes and why it changes. How a percentage of all federal precurement has to go to small, very small business minority owner or handicaped business even when a large company gets a contract the percent they have to pass on to small business have to be local workers etc. If a company is the low bidder and gets the contract has union workers you want to pay a higher amount o not have union workers on the job? Or if union wages are so over the top how can any company with union workers ever be the low bidder? Unless you have no bid contracts study to see who gets thoses and why.

The incentive is for all jobs in all states. Get rid of language in the President's American Jobs Act that excludes incentive in Right to Work states.
To the ones who say the federal government does not make jobs must jobs are made by small business. How do you explain that 80% of must small business atart up with a loan or loan gguarantee from SBA? Or a grant from the Federal Government .Yes some people do it on their own many do not. You will say then what about all the investment from the private sector and / or IPO's. A lot of those investments from the private sector go to not start-ups but people companies pass the start-up phase with a lower risk. Tax dollars fund SBA which in turn cause companies to form and people hired. So federal government does make jobs other than federal ones. Yes many new companies fail but some make it and become growing business that hire. Same thing happens in the private sector. And if you do not think the really big companies do not like the federal government using tax dollars for start-ups your wrong they love it, its profits or shareholder cheaper on them to buy a new idea or product or company than to use profits or money that could be paid to shareholders. If you want to help the economy and get the corps to tell the republicans to vote for the Jobs bill add a 100 billion rider for the SBA to help start-up small business mainly in manufacturing of products not service industry and education on how to start-up a new business IE: tax code ed, How to sale yourself company and products ads, heathcare benefits for employees ed, Ed on how to when needed where to go and how to apply to private sector for funding etc.. Yes many will fail but many will be successful and help us weather the storm we face now and small mom and pop start-ups do and can make a better product that lasts longer will compete with china and imported cheap products, why very little overhead and sell local / regionally which can build name plus with a web site can sell world wide.

They hire means less people on unemployment, on possible welfare, in two ways the mom and pop may have been unemployed new company hires.
Can be funded with tax on Billionaries and Millionaires which just helps them down the road with more companies they can invest make profit on 2 to 5 years from now.
Who knows some may in 5 years go public get listed on stockmarket giving everyone a chance to get in on a new growing company.
