GOP aides say the Senate will vote today on the president's jobs bill -- the original one that does not include the millionaire surtax and includes the "pay-fors" originally proposed by the White House.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) agreed to let Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) insert an amendment to the China currency bill.
This does not impact plans for the Senate to take up the amended bill next week with the millionaire's surtax. That goes forward.
*** UPDATE *** According to Senate Democrats, Republicans will not get their vote on the president's jobs bill as Reid had earlier indicated.
Reid had said on the floor that he was giving McConnell the option to hold the vote as an amendment to the China currency bill, but Democrats say that will not happen now.
McConnell could still do a procedural vote to try to call up the president's jobs bill - but that's not expected to pass.

More Smoke & Mirrors!
According to the President he is not going to back down and will continue to hammer away until it's passed!
Stay laser focused Mr. President - people ARE paying attention.
PS: To the Blue Dogs - either get on board or go home!
You have lost.
They are voting on Obama's own bill, and that is "smoke and mirrors?"
So it is the bill itself that is bad, correct Feisty?
lol-
Let's have a vote...up, or down.
Who could object to that?
Why would they?
This sounds like the same crap Obama pulled with his health care reform bill. The guy is a total idiot.
Anything Obama proposes is merely for his own benefit, not the peoples.
Get him out of office and let's get our country back on track.
Not me. It's all theatre, anyway.
And bad theatre, at that.
They are voting on the China currency bill with the jobs bill as an add on because McConnell requested that. Let's see how many Repubican votes it gets. I wonder who will filibuster it?
Ooohh...
"Theatre".
The European spelling...
Hot.
Uhhh...excuse me. Sorry.
I see you agree with the notion of an up-or-down vote.
That's quite enough, thank you.
I totally agree with your comment about the Blue Dogs. They are an albatross.
Once again, Mitch has overplayed his hand. This is a revenue bill - the jobs bill - and must originate in the House per the Constitution. Because this is a revenue measure, it will also require a 60-vote majority. It CANNOT be passed under reconciliation. Thus, this is little more than a sense of the Senate vote.
If it passes in the Senate with 60+ votes, it goes to the House and Boehner is going to be jumping through hoops trying to decide what is the best course of action. The baggers aren't going to support it. If enough Republicans vote for passage and they are joined by Democrats, McConnell is really in trouble.
Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive.
LoL Indeed.
Or it could just be an affectation adopted after listening to a segment a few weeks back on NPR about Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, who lived just a few miles down the road from here.
On second thought, let's go with hot.
In my dreams. ;-)
Obama's version of his new 'stimulous' bill won't pass.... and he knows it. Still waiting for his threat to withhold social security payments if it isn't passed. Talk about smoke and mirrors, barry has his act down pat... he could take it to Vegas even!
There is only one thing I want to know. Why is Harry Reid tampering with the Jobs Bill? It has already been evaluated by the American people and they are in full agreement that the bill proposed by Obama is the one we want.
I nearly choaked when I read the reason for the change and doing the 5% surtax is because, for people in expensive cities like LA, NY, it is impossible to buy a big house for $250,000 or $300,000. These people don't consider themselves wealthy. What the flippin hell is that???? The majority of people, who make less than $250,000 can barely find a place to rent. Buying a house will never happen
This next election isn't coming fast enough. I want to run out all the useless Teapublicans and as for those coward Democrats, your days are numbered as well.
If you are deaf to the will of the Majority, you are not able to perform your duties as our representatives.
So David,
Then why is Reid fiddling with the jobs bills if its supposed to be originated in the House?
JK:
I already explained that. The bill - if passed in the Senate with a minimum of 60 votes - still must go to the House. The likelihood of it passing in the House is almost nil. If it passes and goes back to the Senate, the bill's prospect of passage is almost nil without some changes. If it passes with the changes, the bill will go to conference. Then there will be a final vote. That's a whole lot of if's.
The fact is Senator Reid is supplying McConnell with rope.
Pass the American Jobs Act modified to exclude any additional deficit spending and modified to exclude language to repeal State's Rights as enumerated in the Constitution of the United States.
The incentive to businesses hiring the unemployed is a great idea, and the amount of the incentive should equal unemployment insurance benefits, food stamps, and the like, that government would be furnishing the unemployed if they were still unemployed. The credit should be applied on the business form.
We must pass this Jobs Bill, put teachers, construction workers, all the related workers, veterans back to work and lift up our own economy, bringing in revenues and circulate the $do-ray-me back to our Treasury pronto.
This is not rocket science. Pass the American Jobs Bill!
Congress, do your job. Get on it now, or explain your problem with putting people back to work!
Let's Go Forward!! People need a pay check, need to pay bills, feed their families.
This is about getting the 98% getting back on track asap.
Congress, pass the American Jobs Bill.
Put millions of Americans across the country back to work or explain why not.
WHY ON EARTH WOULD MILLIONS OF AMERICANS BE DEPRIVED OF JOBS, OF LIVELIHOOD?
CONGRESS, IT IS IN YOUR POWER TO PUT AMERICA BACK TO WORK.
CONGRESS,
DO YOUR JOB & GET IT DONE!
McConnell is up to his ears in his China connections. No one ever questions his involvement with China.
Republicans 2012:
Keeping Millions Out Of Work To Put One Man Out Of Work...
Hey Mickey,NY, I guess you'd prefer if we left the govt. in the hands of the BIG THREE Democrats.........Senate Leader "Whorehouse" Harry Reid, Minority Leader Nancy "read the bill to see whats in it" Pelosi, and loud mouth liberal DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman BULL Schultz !
Oh and let's not forget some other infamous Dems like Eric " I never heard of Fast & Furious" Holder, Charlie"I forgot I had to pay taxes" Rangel, and Maxine " I gave tax money to my husbands bank" Waters.
Wow, if that doesn't keep a person awake at night, I don't know what does !
[I guess you'd prefer if we left the govt. in the hands of the BIG THREE Democrats...]
So you agree with my post? Sounds like you do...why do you hate America, LEONA?
Yep, Mr. Obama's "Circus" continues in the Senate with his #1 Circus Star at center stage....Mr. Reid.
Yeah, use that Nuclear Option to push the Liberal agenda.
How'd a jobs bill for Americans end up in a currency bill involving China? Oh, just more political games.
Cut the baloney, Congress, and Pass the President Job's Bill!!!!!!!!
Yep - them dems never, ever tacked anything on.
To say a war appropriations bill?
Amy, you are doing this on purpose, right? If not it might be a head trauma caused memory issue.
Amy B
The ground on which the GOP/TP are standing is fast eroding so they cling to anything, even when it's lame, to hang on to.
This election is Congress vs Obama. every indicator shows congress at the loosing end.
The election question is, who do you stand with.
Huh Pen - cause according to the latest polling only 20% stand with Obama onthe Economy.
And like Clinton said. "It's the economy...."
And on that question, so very few stand with Obama.
Your president wanted is passed now. The senate is dem majority. Should be smooth sailing. Why all the crying. Let them vote like they were asked. Let them go on record voting.
Dems are jumping ship and do not want to vote.
Hey PEN, I'm pretty sure when I go into vote next year it will not say Obama on one side and Congress on the other.
Pretty sure there will be a Republican candidate.
That is who he will be running against, no matter how hard you guys try to believe something else.
Spanky & White Collar Auto
Yep. is the economy stupid? but what have your congress offered that's different from bush catastrophic economy? What did GOP/TP proclaimed is their major priority?
lest i forget, the poll, obama vs congress showed you what.........15 point difference? are the people stupid?
Meanwhile, in local news, in addition to fishermen, now Maine loggers are angry with our Teapublican governor. LePage vetoed a bill that would require the Maine Conservation Dept to only hire American citizens. That's right, you heard me, it's not about Mexican workers taking our jobs, it's Canadians. The governor claims Maine mill owners have told him there aren't enough Americans willing to do the logging work, so they are forced to use Canadians.
This comes as news to Maine loggers, who are trying to meet with the governor to set him straight - and all he would offer them was a last minute 6:15 am meeting in Presque Isle, (most of these guys work further north.) I've never seen a Maine governor who managed to tick off so many constiuents from so many different quarters. That's the Tea Party, for you, putting the interests of "job creators" ahead of "actual workers."
http://bangordailynews.com/2011/10/05/politics/loggers-turn-down-lepage%e2%80%99s-second-offer-to-meet/
Republicans keep hoping we are all stupid. They are attacking education as fast as they can.
Why else except to get us all stupid enough to vote for them.
Amy, Love your post on happenings in Maine. Yup, you have to watch those wily Canadians. :)
We have a border crossing way up in the NW area of state. Basically, it is a shed and you just leave your name in a book, honor system. The border guys check it every now and then.
Amy,
Not very liberal of you. Bit of a flip-flop. We here in Texas get belittled for kicking out migrants and illegals, but in maine its a different story.
MRWSR the irony is not lost on me.
Amen Feisty!! Tea-Baggers?Republicans want to hit Blue Dogs! Now we should hit Senators from Maine and Conn, and Illinois if they do not vote for the bill!!
The President just explained in a News Conference where he took open questions, that Europe is in deep water and that affects the US economy. Used to be Europe could sell to us and export its way out of trouble, but that no longer applies. Ordinary Americans are watching our budgets and not just maxing out credit cards any more.
Get on it now!
Let's Go Forward!! No excuses. People need a pay check, need to pay bills, feed their families.
This is about the 98% getting back on track.
We see the affects of austerity plans imposed on Europe. NO growth in Jobs or Tax revenue and a stagnant economy. Yet we still have people pushing the same garbage economic plans ( Trickle Down) here in the USA.
Europe is in trouble? Who knew.
Say Navy, did he happen to say why Europe is in the toilet?
Anything about out of control government and entitlements?
Did he happen to call out any of those terrible obstructionist dems in the senate?
Salt Grass - those austerity programs caused this? Not the out of control spending? Huh.
Must be nice to be able to create you own time line. Sure not too helpful for them Greeks or Spaniards.
ssssssssssssssssssssssss
Somebody brush this uninformed fly off o' my shoulder.
Who thinks Sen Chuck Schumer {D.N.Y.} had something to do with changing the original Jobs bill the President propsed?
spanky 1; backhouse 0
The fate of millions across this country, of American livelihoods, creating jobs so ordinary people can put food on the table for their families, and pay their bills,
IS NOT TENNIS, FOOTBALL, FOOSBALL, or any kind of spectator sport.
Congress do your jobs and earn your pay.
Put our American family back to work, or explain why not!
Yes congress should do their job. But the tea party and republicans do not listen to you even when you write them a letter.( there are a few that do not many)I have written the republican person for our district several times. Get a very nice letter saying that they will look into the matter, and vote on how they find the bill. Big deal after the vote I would see they didn't vote at all how or why I told them. I know others in this area had written them also. I am from a republican district but do not belong to the party and just vote for who I believe is right for the job.Of course I don't say that in the letter, but give all the reasons I am either for or against the bill The parties need to start working together for the good of the people but somehow I can't see it happen.
So yesterday I posted why the non story about Bachman's gaffe but nothing on Holder? Today MSNBC has posted an article from the AP "Bush-era probe involved guns "walking". Now there blaming Bush for operation fast and furioius...how comical.
No JFK, they are blaming the 2006 operation
On Bush which was basically the same as Fast and Furious..
Not even close, but nice try Robert.
Any of those guns go to Mexico? Any used to kill Americans? Scope?
Funny. See Robert - Think Progress does not give you all the info.
But how about this - let's assume you are right. Gonzoles is gone. Time for Holder to go.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44788900/ns/politics-more_politics/
maybe this is a better try?
Ah, but not to Mexico - you know a foreign country where they could not be tracked?
If the purpose was to track, but they went somewhere where not tracking could be undertaken, that's a problem, particularly when some were used in a murder. In fact, that makes the gov. an accomplice.
All of these programs were bad. All need investigation. But onlyHolder is in office, and only Holder lied to congress.
But I get it - it's all Bush's fault. He made Holder lie.
Robert 1960 dont even try to talk/give facts to the right wing nut jobs.
They ONLY want to try and make Pres Obama a one term president (and they dont care who gets hurt to get the job done)
The fact that Operation Wide Receiver started under Bush and continued under Obama DOES NOT MATTER to them
Oh... Just reading story after story, not making it a Bush's fault thing just commenting on JFK's comment above. It seems each and every administration has skeletons, always have always will!
On that we agree.
All politicans are idiots, some more useful than others.
Robert,
Where does it say that Operation Wide Receiver allowed guns to travel to Mexico?
Reid knows how to bring legislation to the floor of the Senate--he's giving O'Connell a chance to vote down the President's original bill in order to score political points.
But here's the bad news: the Democrats never stick it to the Republicans in the same way. Until they learn to use votes as swords of Damocles held over the heads of senators like Snowe, Collins and the junior senator from Massachusetts, among others, they won't create the needed pressure to get the President's jobs bill passed.
Wait til we see the sausage being made in the conference committee between the House and Senate that will have to reconcile the discordant versions of the jobs bill. Finally, don't forget: the House super-committee has to make progress soon or else the cuts to all government programs, including defense, become real.
Never forget:
This is about real people, real families, real children and putting millions back to work, food on the table.
Also about getting America ~ our economy back on track because the clock is ticking away from us.
We pay our elected officials to act.
So act. Congress get on it and DO YOUR JOB!
PASS THE AMERICAN JOBS BILL PRONTO.
Never forget:
The same politicians that still have not passed a budget for years, (Senate) are merely playing the same game they always play. Meanwhile, the economy remains on uncertain legislative / regulatory footing and there are trillions of dollars of investment capital waiting it out on the sidelines. And we wonder why the jobs growth is anemic. Pass an actual budget and good or bad watch what happens.
Sorry Blackhouse: asking the Senate to pass anything without a budget is pure BS.
Watching congressional republicans trying to make the epa ineffective. For two days the republicans have been saying if these regulations are not defeated then;1) jobs will be lost, 2) it too costly for these companies to comply and 3) these jobs will be shipped overseas. One question republicans is compliance more costly than moving your company overseas? Talking out both sides of the mouth. One republican called these proposals "job creating bills".
Teapugs wasting time as usual.
Obama should quit politics and go do jumping jacks with Michelle. Afterwards they can play Monopoly or Candy Land.
Obama should step aside and let adults make the decisions.
What's new here? Son of stimulus is the same ol.....more union kickbacks, no real job creation, and tons of $$$ wasted.....Yet they want more taxes.
I think it is a political move to push a vote like this but at least we will have record of who is for America and the middle class and who is not.
Where are the union kickbacks; the only thing I see where AFL-CIO President is mentioned along with the President of The Chamber of Commerce both agree that infrastructure investment is needed. I can remember when The Chamber blasted the POTUS for the previous plan and now he's on board. So, do you think construction and engineers are not real jobs. What is your problem? dc get onboard with this. We have been using the republican methods since they took control of congress and nothing has been accomplished. Nothing but their attempts to make government ineffective.
Google this: USE OF PROJECT LABOR AGREEMENTS FOR FEDERAL CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS
There they are! Hooray!!!
Obama's Jobs Bill? Every time I here him yammer on about this POS bill, he's talking about hiring Teachers, Fire Fighters, Policemen blah, blah, blah. How did these guys government jobs get any more important than the people working in the private sector who have to pay for them? Let's vote for a better leader in 2012. This country has had enough of this guys abysmal leadership.....
UAW,
I agree. I had a job interview on Tuesday and one of the main things stressed was personal responsibility and ownership (Engineering/IT position). Obama is still talking about what he inherited (aka Bush), Japan, Middle East... if the guy would take at least some responsibility -- its unbelievable.
The fact that so many on the left still defend the behavior of this president is astounding.
I agree Krell. This guy has done nothing but convince more people it's sombody elses fault they are poor, broke and stupid. Basiclly he's training a new generation of adults to depend on somebody else. We need a new leader....
@UAW - A job is a job is a job, whether private or public. All this BS bickering about what constitutes a freaking job is crazy. Our economy cannot work without the middle class, private or public sector, having jobs. A job is a job is a job. It stimulates the economy. Isn't that the problem? Not who has the biggest weinie!
@Krell - the fact that so many of the T-baggers believe that "trickle down" economy works is the epitomy of insanity, doing the same thing over and over.
Y'all got your feet stuck in the mud and your head's up your butts, and so do the Repub congress/T-baggers, and that's why government can't work right now. Because they don't want it to work. And they don't give a darn about the American middle class.
As for all your throwing around of BS about not taking responsibility, why haven't you Repubs taken responsibility? All you do is say, oh, look at President Obama. Well you bunch of azzholes never took responsibility for the initial breakdown, the unfunded lied-about wars, the medicare benefit plan to give away money to pharma, the no-bid contracts for pharma, rising health care costs, all of which you had 8 years to deal with and did nothing but shove the cost down the road.
We'll take responsibility for trying to turn the economy around, why have you done lately?
Cathy,
I re-read what I typed and see nothing about trickle down, etc... Obama is president - not Bush (even though Obama = Bush 44).
There is no way that you can be honest about the fact that after almost 3 years, Obama is still blaming everyone/everything else except his policies. At least Bush had integrity and didn't play the blame game.
Look at the latest poll - if Obama were a CEO, the majority say he should be fired. How long can you continue to blame someone else for policies that are your own?
I'm an engineer and pay taxes and work hard for my money... I'm not willing to just hand it over to deadbeats and losers.
Nov 2012 can't come fast enough.
Bush had integrity right..... read the former VP's book he thinks Bush pushed some under the bus like Libby.Did not play the blame game lets rewrite history lol He they blamed everything on Nancy Pelosi.
So anyone who gets tax dollars are deadbeats and losers that does and will appy to a lot of companies yes even GE. Your a Engineer how much did it cost you to pay for your degree bet it was a whole lot less than the cost today. Hope you did not use any student aid grants GI bill or tax dollars to help you get it they may just put you in the deadbeat loser column with your thinking.
So you pay taxes big deal so does everyone in the US even illegals, vistors, cizitens, people on welfare unemployement. Did you mean federal taxes which help fund state governments in so many different ways how many food stamp, welfare, unemployment dollars gets paid to a state local as sales tax hmm lets cut the life lines keeping states afloat see how many both red and blue go bankrupt will no federal tax dollars flowing to them. how many of those people on welfare or unemployment buy product/s that help you earn your living.
Stop it Cathy. A government job is not a private sector job or even close. Right now it takes the taxes from 15-16 Private sector workers to pay for each public sector worker. If we are ever going to have any hope of balancing the budget we need to stop that lop sided thinking of you and Obama. I'm not saying we can't hire teachers, firemen at some point. But, Let's do it when we can afford them. Realisticly 95% of the firemen in this country are volenteers doing it for free. There is no need to over pay for that job with golden benifits and retirement at 50.....
All the talk about putting local government workers "back to work" is comical. One should never use federal dollars to put local government employees "back to work." That is the very definition of a conflict of interest between the loyal constituents and their vote. There is a reason why Teachers, Fire and Police workers are funded with local dollars. Part of the reason these types of jobs have become out of balance is due to the fluctuations in federal dollars. Create a job with short term federal funding and watch what happens when the local government has to pay the full price a year or two later. No surprise the job is eliminated.
Bet ol Mittens who pays a 14% tax rate doesnt like the 5% increase
Does anyone really beleive that taking 5% away from people making a million dollars is going to keep liberal politicians from blowing thru that? Let's deduct 5% from the welfare programs in this country and educate reciepients on how to provide for them selves.....
Why not do both and have 2.5 % going only for debt 2.5% for job growth.
Robert,
From 2005 - 2008 -Project Gunrunner was a BATF program and began under Bush Adminstration to arrest straw purchasers who would smuggle guns into Mexico.
2009 Obama's administration began Fast and Furious this is a separate program. The ATF launched Fast and Furious but used Project Gunrunner Funds. The ATF wanted to go after bigger fish, not the straw purchaser. This program is the one that allowed guns to enter Mexico with out tracking them.
You notice how every time the Obama Administration gets caught in something, they always blame Bush, or at least claim it started under Bush so it must be Bush's fault.
Ammend the bill. A lot. There are a few decent ideas, and a lot of bad ones.
I'm all for strengthening the middle-class. Problem is, a lot of folks seem to make middle-class synonymous with poor and it ain't so.
Investing in UI is NOT a middle-class investment. Sorry folks. Investing in infrastructure projects to small businesses-only, is.
So you could see where the Prez and I differ :D I don't want to give money to the rich, unions shouldn't matter where federal procurement is concerned, and the poor's fortunes are tied intrinsically TO the middle-class.
Invest in the MC and everyone else does well.
and a whole lot of people associate middle class with union workers; many of us in the middle class have no union affiliation and have not needed a union to become reasonable successful
For sure.
I think I made my point with "unions shouldn't matter where federal procurement is concerned".
Unions aren't synonymous with middle-class, by any means.
Wish people would educate themselves on both sides on how federal precurement works and what the Davis/Bacon act does... not what you have been told. What prevaling wage really means and how it comes about how often it changes and why it changes. How a percentage of all federal precurement has to go to small, very small business minority owner or handicaped business even when a large company gets a contract the percent they have to pass on to small business have to be local workers etc. If a company is the low bidder and gets the contract has union workers you want to pay a higher amount o not have union workers on the job? Or if union wages are so over the top how can any company with union workers ever be the low bidder? Unless you have no bid contracts study to see who gets thoses and why.
homework...google skillcraft which is better for them to be on welfare or working paying taxes?
It's not a zero-sum.
It should go to the lowest bidder who meet the criteria. And the demise of no-bid contracts were something Obama promised us (and one of the reasons I voted for him).
Another campaign promise broken.
The incentive is for all jobs in all states. Get rid of language in the President's American Jobs Act that excludes incentive in Right to Work states.
To the ones who say the federal government does not make jobs must jobs are made by small business. How do you explain that 80% of must small business atart up with a loan or loan gguarantee from SBA? Or a grant from the Federal Government .Yes some people do it on their own many do not. You will say then what about all the investment from the private sector and / or IPO's. A lot of those investments from the private sector go to not start-ups but people companies pass the start-up phase with a lower risk. Tax dollars fund SBA which in turn cause companies to form and people hired. So federal government does make jobs other than federal ones. Yes many new companies fail but some make it and become growing business that hire. Same thing happens in the private sector. And if you do not think the really big companies do not like the federal government using tax dollars for start-ups your wrong they love it, its profits or shareholder cheaper on them to buy a new idea or product or company than to use profits or money that could be paid to shareholders. If you want to help the economy and get the corps to tell the republicans to vote for the Jobs bill add a 100 billion rider for the SBA to help start-up small business mainly in manufacturing of products not service industry and education on how to start-up a new business IE: tax code ed, How to sale yourself company and products ads, heathcare benefits for employees ed, Ed on how to when needed where to go and how to apply to private sector for funding etc.. Yes many will fail but many will be successful and help us weather the storm we face now and small mom and pop start-ups do and can make a better product that lasts longer will compete with china and imported cheap products, why very little overhead and sell local / regionally which can build name plus with a web site can sell world wide.
Mom and Pop companies add to middle class.
They hire means less people on unemployment, on possible welfare, in two ways the mom and pop may have been unemployed new company hires.
Can be funded with tax on Billionaries and Millionaires which just helps them down the road with more companies they can invest make profit on 2 to 5 years from now.
Who knows some may in 5 years go public get listed on stockmarket giving everyone a chance to get in on a new growing company.
Will it help Obama yes but also help all members of congress also and everyone in our country.
Yes its tax and spend but it helps the country and makes more business people who the Republicans say they represent
How much of this campaign money is spent in advertisments, dinner parties and so on? This campaign money goes to established wealthy companies. Let's see how many jobs the campaign creates. Here is the wealthy's chance to be the job creators the republicans are talking about. And how much are these tax cuts costing us? Well, I should say you because I'm no longer a tax payer. I lost my jobs, no one is supporting non-profits.
Bravo Harry Reid' everything positive thats been done for the country has been done by Democrats.
