Despite Republicans' efforts to link Democrat Earl Ray Tomblin to President Obama and his health-care plan, Tomblin pulled out the victory in the West Virginia governor's race.
Tomblin, the acting governor and former state Senate president who took over when Joe Manchin became a U.S. Senator, defeated Republican Bill Maloney, a former drilling company executive, 50%-47%.
Polls, both public and private, had shown the race closing in recent days. And the Republican Governors Association blitzed the airwaves in the Washington, D.C., media market -- which reaches part of West Virginia -- with ads questioning why Tomblin hadn't signed on to a lawsuit seeking to stop the implementation of the federal health-care plan that passed last year.

OMG! A Dem wins... will this put a ripple in the msm's 'wave of discontent'???
Tomblin is a good West Virginian not in bed with Obama.
I'm West Virginian and my family is 13 generations (14 counting my kids and 15 counting my grandkids) West Virginian and I would like to report that we are not the stereotypical Democrat in these here United States. I suppose outsiders would be hard pressed to understand.
Now Obama wants to end coal fired generators. So just take a wild guess how that idea goes over in West Virginia all you rocket scientists.
Don't break the law, don't mess with my religious beliefs, and never even think about grabbing my guns.
I take no handouts and balance my budget, you balance yours.
Scott__— Good on you! You can be a Democrat and still have sanity in your thinking. So I assume that you will not be supporting Obama next year? He does not represent any of the positions you stated in your blog. If more Democrats like you had to the same stones to see thorugh our "leader" and the Democratic "leadership" in the House and Senate, we would be a better country and could begin to move forward again in energy independence and other areas! Thanks for taking a stand against what your party has turned into!
In other words, Scott, you're not a democrat, never was, never will be. Odd, I have not heard a word about President Obama wanting to end coal-fired generators. Was that one of those GOP ads in WVA to try and defeat Tomblin? Have you heard President Obama say a word about taking away your guns or denying your religious rights? I recall President Obama signed into law a measure allowing guns in National Parks much to the chagrin of many. He could have vetoed it so how does that fit into the NRA's drumbeat that Obama wants to take away your guns rhetoric which is nothing but scare tactics.
Go ahead Scott, vote for some republican in 2012. Vote to have your rights defined by the beliefs of a few. Vote to eliminate medicare. Vote to privatize social security and give that money to Wall Street. Vote for Rick Perry, he likes the Confederate flag; you'll like him, he's in the backpockets of millionaires, never makes a political move without them. Vote for Mitt Romney, he's great at buying successful companies and bankrupting them to make a profit; great at sending the jobs overseas. Be our guest, vote in favor of your guns and religion; why bother looking at anything like your wallet. Keep listening to the talking heads who tell you nonsense and vote accordingly.
It is a nice way to end the political news of the day. A Democrat governor wins!! Wonder how many millions the Republican governor's Committee spent on this election?
Whatever it is, it's probably nowhere near the $250 million that Karl Rove is pledging to spend on the Presidential race. Can you imagine that? A quarter billion dollars from just one of many groups, financed by just a handful of the billionaires available to support Republican candidates.
But it is nice to see big money lose for a change. I'll be interested to see how Spanky and the boys spin this one tomorrow.
'GetMoneyOut.com"... It's way overdue... Time to overturn the SCOTUS...
AM -- No kidding, I saw one of the ads Rove & Co. plan to air and how they edited the news reporter completely out of context. The reporter originally talks about ending loopholes and asking more of the richest 2%, but the Rove ad makes it seem like she is saying President Obama wants to raise taxes on the middle class. It's disgusting.
We all know the president and Dems have NEVER advocated raising taxes on the middle class, but low-information voters could be influenced by propaganda like this. My only hope is most will be conservatives who wouldn't vote for a Democrat no matter what anyway and all that money will be wasted on them.
But thanks to a right-wing SCOTUS legislating from the bench, this is what we can look forward to in the year ahead.
I saw where over 90% of Rove's campaign money comes from 3 billionaire donors. Nothing like 3 billionaires buying the election.
Maybe he won because he "was" tied to Obama. Is that not possible? I think it is. You are more affective if you as a governor belong to the same political party as a sitting president. More money comes to your state. Most American realize this. Maybe not in the deep south but most Americans realize this much about political parties.
Plus, if your "Vote for me because That Other Guy likes OBAMACARE" campaign attracts those that actually like PPACA, you've just reminded them to vote for That Other Guy. Backfire, writ large.
"You are more affective if you as a governor belong to the same political party as a sitting president. More money comes to your state"
Ana , you are correct. The Obama Administration is corrupt to the core, and uses federal tax money shamelessly to reward its friends and punish its enemies.
.
Funny thought,
This man ran away from ties to Obama, and I am sure you will not see Obama anywhere near him, as he has to run again in 2012.
As a matter of fact, he would not even say he would vote for Obama when he was reaptedly asked.
He won an election in a Blue state that was supposed to go his direction. The margin was narrow and the main reason he was electable was he ran away from Obama, and distanced any and all ties with his policies.
He most certainly did not win on the premise he was associated with Obama. THAT would be news.
ABO 2012
Bob,
It is "business as usual" just like it would be if a Republican President lived in the White House. Having a Democratic President does not make it corruption but nice try! If you don't understand this about a two party system then go back to school and learn something.
Having once lived in West Virginia, I am happy for the outcome there
Yes, be grateful for small victories! It has been a very disappointing couple of years for Democrats going back to before the 2010 mid-terms! And it sure looks to be even more disappointing for the next two years or even longer for them! ABO folks!
More bad news coming down the pike for the administration are recent revelations of the blatant lies of Eric Holder and other Justice Dept. employees to Congress over the Fast and Furious fiasco! Nice attempt at Eric and Barry to usurp the 2nd Amendment for their own gun control agenda!
If this scandal runs all the way up the chain of command —and by all indicators, it could —it is certainly an impeachable offense. This is a high crime, not a misdemeanor. Pushing an operation designed to undercut American freedoms that ends with the death of Americans is not only illegal, it is unconscionable. And unlike Iran-Contra, it wasn't done for the right reasons.
I'm afraid the efforts of the Democrats over the last 3 plus years could be summed up in one word:
D'oh! (attributed to H. Simpson/Joe Biden)
Congratulations, Earl Ray Tomlin!
In anticipation of a GOP win, Feisty and the gaggle of moonbats here had a whole bunch of lame West Virginia jokes ready to roll out about "toothless hillbillies" who marry their kin...
Part of the reason the democrats won was the outside money. West Virginians don't like outsiders or outside money trying to buy the election for the republicans. For all intents WV is democratic on the local level although they govern like republicans who are not anti labor.
Another part of the reason the democrat won is because when Tomlin when asked whether he would support Obama's reelection refused to say yes.
Obama is toxic.
WOW what spin the tea people GOP republicans have ginned up this morning about he lose in WV. Spin baby spin.
