Gingrich says he's smarter than GOP rivals

DODGE, Iowa -- Newt Gingrich now says the reason to vote for him over his rivals -- he smarter.

“I’m not running against any of my friends, they’re all good people," Gingrich said at a breakfast at the Best Western here. "But if you watch them and watch me, the difference in the depth of knowledge and the difference in the ability to debate Obama, the difference in actually having done it at the national level, I can’t only think if you’re worried about the future of the country and you’re worried about how we get the country fixed, I’m a pretty good mechanic who knows how to fix the car and the other folks are good at selling it.

"They’re nice people, but they don’t have the knowledge to do something like this on this scale. This is enormously complicated.”

A day after Gingrich unveiled his 10-point new “Contract with America,” he again went point-by-point on his plan -- and again apologized for taking so long to describe it, but “it took so long to put together,” he said.

Gingrich also claimed that he has been studying how to make the U.S. better since he was a freshman or sophomore in high school.

Speaking about Social Security, Gingrich said he wants Americans to have the option of choosing their own, private Social Security account.

“Grandchildren should have right to choose Social Security account they control, it has to be there, we’re going to do a commercial showing President Obama in July saying twice you’re not going to get your social security check," Gingrich said. "Send it to college campuses and say do you want to spend the next 50 years of your life working and paying taxes supposedly building up for retirement when any politician can be this irresponsible? Or would you rather have an account you control so a politician can’t do that do your money.  … I’m not going to force them into this system, they have the option, very few people will stay in it if they’re 25 or 30, and think it won’t be there. … If you have this account we don’t have a set date when you have to retire. Fact is, if you have this account and you control it and want to work until you are 85, fine. If you want to retire at 50, fine. What do we care? It’s your life, it’s your money.

Gingrich also pointed to the black community as being most disadvantaged with the current Social Security system. “Sadly most African Americans are the most disadvantaged because they die the youngest so they pay their whole lifetime and it transfers to somebody else because it’s not an estate.”

Speaking about fraud in the federal government, Gingrich said Visa, MasterCard and American Express do a better job preventing fraud than the U.S. government. And claimed as President, he would have the borders controlled by January 1, 2014.

Brother Newt probably is smarter that the other GOP contenders but I am voting Democratic. I want no part of privatizing social security.

What is not in dispute is that Gingrich, Cain, Perry, Bachmann, Santorum, even the two liberals Romney and Huntsman would be better than Obam

I see Marc you're back with your usual marxist rants. Is that what they spin at you down at the union hall?

Guys like you are why we hate unions.

One of my sons is a firefighter and hates the union because he actually loves liberty and proved it by serving also in the Marines.

Marc, Not to worry, Democrats are actually richer and control more wealth than republicans ever will. Corporations are very limited in their support of any political cause for fear of alienating thier customers. Chill man. A lot of rich people support liberal causes because at the end of the day you can only wear one pair of pants at a time-- the richer you get the more you realize that we are all in this thing together and no man is an island--nor should he be.

Ahh, the fat little white boy with his double chin sepaks to America! Newt, lay off the rich foods like caviar, butter crossants, truffles, Alaskan salmon served on a bed of vermicilli! Go exercise your pudgy body and come back with a different verbal onslaught. SSA needs one element - get the money returned from Congress - they used the money at their discretion, and should face impeachment charges for their theft of SSA entitlement funds which were designed to increase the wealth of the SSA for all those who have paid their share. Optional investments are always available, but SSA is sacred, designed by a President exercising foresight - something the Gopers and TPers consistently lack. Go on another Med cruise Newt. You belong center stage on a cruise ship entertaining fat people like you!

I can't imagine a guy more unlikely to attract black voters. This is just so cynical. He's basically just doing this to say "I'm not a racist, guys, so it's ok to vote for me."

As for being "smarter", I find that laughable. Newt might be knowledgeable, but he's been a repeat bumbler his entire career. He consistently tries to use fear and hyperbole to "lead", which to me is not real leadership at all.

And I am definitely smarter and more experienced than my dog but that doesn't mean I should be President.

Gingrich is unelectable, if he is so smart why hasn't he figured that out?

If you remember the 1994 mid-term Republican coup... Newt Gringrich's "Contract with America" ... but all we got were sleazebags Tom Delay and Jack Abramoff... some deal.

Gingrich is the guy who brought us Tom Delay and Jack Abramoff, supported Iran/Contra death squads and wanted more trickle-down tax cuts for the rich.

Reagan helped arm the Iran Revolutionary Guard and Saddam. Reagan had The Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 1982 was, at the time, the largest peacetime tax increase on the middle-class in U.S. history.

Former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, once considered among the nation's most powerful and feared lawmakers sentenced to three years in prison for money-laundering.

Jack Abramoff, the once-powerful Republican lobbyist, was sentenced to four years in prison.

Former Bush administration official David Safavian was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison Friday for concealing his relationship with disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

This is what Gingrich will return to America... corruption and greed.

Newt blew it a long time ago. He's inconsistently inconsistent. He isn't liked by either his party or the Democrats. He likes to play ball but only by his rules and if he wants to change them mid stream then he does so. Personally I really don't think he's very bright. If he really wants to get some attention and claims to be so frigging smart, why doesn't he come up with a real jobs plan. You know he won't and neither will the other Republicans. They are too busy kissing the backsides of CORPORATIONS. Newt could continue running a " fragmented disconbobulated " campaign and no one would even notice that he was still out there.
