An “undercover” First Lady Michelle Obama donned a baseball cap and sunglasses and went shopping at an Alexandria, VA Target store yesterday afternoon.
Store manager Maria Panagopulos, who was working during Mrs. Obama’s visit, said the dressed-down first lady spent about 20 minutes shopping. The first daughters were not with her (so maybe they’ll find a new Missoni rain boot in their rooms).
Officials in the first lady’s office say they don’t provide details about her personal life or what she bought. But they released this written statement: “It is not uncommon for the first lady to slip out to run an errand, eat at a local restaurant or otherwise enjoy the city outside the White House gates.”
The first lady checked out carrying several bags at about 3:30 pm ET. Panagopulos says they get a lot of famous people at the Alexandria Target, but this was “exciting.”

I'm very impressed with the First Lady getting that much stuff in 30 minutes of shopping---clearly a very efficient shopper!

Should she be shopping at a "Target"? I thought her husband wanted a more civil tone. Targets and cross-hairs are a no-no.

rickster, do you see any secret service surrounding her? You should study up, this isn't the same as a campaign rally. If it was a planned photo op, why haven't we seen her other outings? The secret services purposely blends in, I doubt most those customers even noticed them but they were there.
Leona, the $40,000 bracelet was loaned to her and she gave the designer free publicity by wearing it. Care to explain what is wrong with that? Laura Bush, Nancy Reagan, Hillary Clinton all wore expensive jewelry and much of it was on loan. Talk about petty nonsense, the right wingers are outdoing themselves lately.

No I am not kidding, I have a tremendous amount of admiration for the First Family, who have and are working hard to improve their lives, themselves and their families as they go through life. They have educated themselves and taken advantage of all the opportunities this great country has to offer.

Did you criticize Nancy Reagan for all the expensive china and other accouterments she bought, all her designer gowns and clothes she wore? It is a well known fact she was provided with by the designers free or discounted clothes as we went through a recession.

How low can you people go? We've had a fine legacy of very respectable First Lady's in this country for as I can remember. Ms. Obama continues that legacy. It's one thing to hammer politicians, that is part of the job - disprecting the First Lady - regardless of their husband's political affiliation, is despicable.

There are a lot of bitter folks on here. The Secret Service arrived in casual clothes about 30 minutes before she arrived. No one even knew who they were and it seemed like a regular day at Target. No one even recognized Mrs Obama until the cashier saw her when she rang up her items.
Mrs Obama has visited Tysons Corner a few times as well as Petco. She lives in the White House, but tries to get out whenever she can. This was not a Photo Op.
So if this was not a photo op who took the pictures? Secret service was with her undercover. I don't particularly care where she shops. I just don't see this as newsworthy with everything else going on. It doesn't make me feel like she is one of the "common" people.
