Paul condemns 'assassinating' al-Awlaki

MANCHESTER NH -- Ron Paul aggressively criticized President Obama today for al-Awlaki's death.

"No I don't think that's a good way to deal with our problems," Paul said in a media avail after his remarks at the Politics + Eggs event here. "He was born here, Al-Awlaki was born here, he is an American citizen. He was never tried or charged for any crimes. No one knows if he killed anybody. We know he might have been associated with the underwear bomber. But if the American people accept this blindly and casually that we now have an accepted practice of the president assassinating people who he thinks are bad guys, I think it's sad.

"I think what would people ... have said about Timothy McVeigh? We didn't assassinate him, who certainly he had done it. Went and put through the courts then executed him. To start assassinating American citizens without charges, we should think very seriously about this."

Does he feel the same about Bin Laden? "

Not exactly. "Because he was involved in 9/11 and I voted for authority to go after those individuals responsible for 9/11," Paul said. "Al-Awlaki nobody ever suggested that he was participant in 9/11."

I am one of those liberals who some in their comments have said our heads would explode over this. I'm afraid in this case (or at least in my case) you are wrong. Mr. al-Awlaki abandoned his country voluntarily, publicly advocated the killing of innocent women and children, and went from being a propaganda leader to operationally planning and involvement in attempted attacks on the U.S. If ever someone fit the definition of "enemy combatant" as well as traitor then this man fit the bill, and IMHO when you actively join in a war against the U.S., irregardless of the right or wrong of our position vs. their position, then you set yourself up to be a target. The reality of life is combatants get smoked, and trials usually don't happen.

    TOR.

What a dumb statement. We are not going into Libya with ground troops. If you would stop listening to Fox Lies so much you would learn the truth. First of all, Oama was highly criticized by Sarah Palin and John McCain for not going into Libya fast enough. They would have sent troops in right away without even thinking. Obama took the time to form a coalition with NATO. Those two republican idiots use their ignorant shoot first and ask questions later mentality to do things. That is what got us into the Iraq war.

Ron Paul is not representing the views of the Tea Party- He's completely wrong on this

From Judson Phillips Tea Party Nation

How many other ways are there to say this?

Anwar al-Awlaki was killed today along with some other jihadists. Al-Awlaki had been trying to secure weapons of mass destruction to use against America and was behind a number of terrorist attacks and attempted attacks.

Fortunately, a missile fired from a Predator drone today ended this threat to America.

        What was Ron Paul’s response?

Ron Paul called it, “an assassination.”

I have little good to say about the Obama regime, but at least they are still killing terrorists. Something is wrong with this picture when, at least in this area, Obama is a better leader than Ron Paul.

What part of self-defense does Ron Paul not get?

Terrorists do not care about the law. A grand jury indictment does not scare them. They are willing to kill themselves to kill Americans. There is only one way to stop them and that is to kill them.

Al-Awlaki was an American citizen, only by virtue of the fact he was born in the United States. He was not an American in any sense of the word. He was an enemy of this country who lived for one purpose. He wanted to kill Americans.

Al-Qaeda and the other Muslim terrorists are not a traditional army but the are an enemy nonetheless. If an enemy decides to bomb the United States, we do not send the FBI after them, we send the Marines. We do not go out to arrest them, we go out to destroy them.

When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Roosevelt did not convene a grand jury. He bombed the hell out of Germany and Japan. In a war, you fight your enemy. In a war, you kill your enemy.

Ron Paul does not get the fact there are threats to America. Ron Paul thinks there is nothing wrong with Iran having the bomb. He is totally nuts. Iran wants to see a world wide Caliphate and is led by a man who believes he must create as much world wide chaos as possible to bring about the Islamic second coming.

What would happen if Ron Paul were President? It would be the nightmare scenario. He would treat terrorism as if it were a criminal justice problem.

Ron Paul is dangerous for America and if he is ever elected, he will kill Americans. . He should not be allowed into the White House, even on the public tour. He should not be allowed in Congress. He should not even be allowed to vote on what to have for dinner tonight.

Ron Paul. A man who does not think America should be allowed to defend itself.

Ron Paul, a terrorist’s best friend.

Ron Paul is an idiot! He wants to be a hardliner and let Americans die if they don't have health insurance yet he is against killing an American-born terrorist that has declared war on the United States and all Americans. Way-to-go Obama!!!!!!!!

One trend in these comments disturbs me. If you are an American citizen you have rights. If you are NOT an American citizen, and we debate that later, you seem to have NO rights!

I hold it as factual that everyone has rights. Some may have more than others, true. Some may have abandoned some of their rights. Some rights might belong only to 'citizens', such as voting or running for office. But let's face it, and I not addressing this particular individual here, people from other nations expect to have rights when it comes down to American justice.

Is anyone concerned about the precedents being defined right now? While the trauma of 9/11 is still so prevalent?

How quick are we to deny to others the rights we claim for ourselves! I rather like the saying:

"Those who would give up freedom for safety deserve neither!"

This is for Midwest: How dare you insult my intelligence! I do not believe that all (and the operative word here is all) Muslims are a threat to the peace and safety of the United States; neither do I believe that they should have to sew the letter M anywhere on their clothing, unlike the Nazis who forced the Jews to to put the letter J on their clothing. However, what I do believe is that if a known traitor of his/her country whose sole purpose is to take out by any means possible the United States and her people, then they must be severely dealt with. Can anyone understand that the American people are sick and tired of being sick and tired with all this mess? This a new day and I'll give it a name, its called the The Age of Terrorism.

Great job American military for killing these terrorists !! It is better to kill these terrorists with drones than sending in our troops like we did in Iraq, and have thousands of our soilders killed.

I'm very liberal, but I also believe in self defense. Al Walaki clearly joined a group that killed over 3000 Americans 10 years ago. He made himself a very legitimate target. I'd like the right wingers to stop accusing liberals of being "suicidal", because I am not. If someone like Al Walaki is threatening us, and in my mind he was, we Americans have every right to defend ourselves.

Once someone commits to become an enemy of USA, expect to get blown away. That traitor POS won't hurt anymore USA citizens. This is something we need to do more often, find them and destroy them where they stand no matter where they stand.

Hmmm... Anwar al-Awlaki might have been born in the USA, but he became a turncoat - thereby renouncing his citizenship. In my opinion and belief, he was no longer a U.S. citizen. His death is further proof that you can run but you can't hide.

“If we allow our fervor to eliminate terrorist threats to cause us to cut corners with the Constitution and the fundamental rights of American citizens, whether it be invasions of privacy or the killing of someone born on U.S. soil, I could argue that the terrorists will have ultimately won."
