Paul condemns 'assassinating' al-Awlaki

MANCHESTER NH -- Ron Paul aggressively criticized President Obama today for al-Awlaki's death.

"No I don't think that's a good way to deal with our problems," Paul said in a media avail after his remarks at the Politics + Eggs event here. "He was born here, Al-Awlaki was born here, he is an American citizen. He was never tried or charged for any crimes. No one knows if he killed anybody. We know he might have been associated with the underwear bomber. But if the American people accept this blindly and casually that we now have an accepted practice of the president assassinating people who he thinks are bad guys, I think it's sad.

"I think what would people ... have said about Timothy McVeigh? We didn't assassinate him, who certainly he had done it. Went and put through the courts then executed him. To start assassinating American citizens without charges, we should think very seriously about this."

Does he feel the same about Bin Laden? "

Not exactly. "Because he was involved in 9/11 and I voted for authority to go after those individuals responsible for 9/11," Paul said. "Al-Awlaki nobody ever suggested that he was participant in 9/11."

When Obama ran for president, he said attacking our enemies was bad and we needed to sit down and talk with them. Now he is bloodthirsty and just in time to cover up what he has done to the country. Under Bush we had timely messages from Bin Laden. Under Obama we have timely assassinations. The White House must be the House of Usher.

You are so wrong. He was talking about countries who are our enemies not terrorists. Did you go to school at all?....ohh i guess not typical right wing!!!

Neo is right. He was talking about negotiating with governments. He always said that he would go after terrorists and that he would go more heavily into Afghanistan. I don't agree with his escalation in Afghanistan, but he was always up front about it. Come on, Bush was a huge liar. Don't you remember the 'weapons of mass destruction'?--not only never found, but also many internal memos that show he KNEW they never existed. Don't you remember his rhetoric when he was drumming up support for invasion of Iraq after 911, in which he kept using Hussein's name in the same sentences as Bin Laden's and the attack on the towers, when in fact, Hussein had nothing to do with 911, hated Bin Laden and there were no Iraqis on those planes. Lie after lie--Bush should be prosecuted for crimes against humanity. 100s of thousands of Iraqis have died under the guise of 'collateral damage'--that quaint little military-speak that allows us to distance ourselves from the murder of civilians as if its inevitable and oops, sorry we just can't help killing your mother, father, brother, baby, etc. Oh and he neglected to mention that we put Hussein in power in the first place. Empire building has always been a really nasty business of Machevellian intrigue, lies, deception and brutality. That being given I still don't want to read that a bomb has gone off in the U.S. and many of our citizens have died. But I am not a blind patriot who doesn't see the blood on our hands (as well as just about every other powerful nation's hands.)

Uncle Ron is starting to sound like a crazy liberal. With talk like that, he is going to lose the few supporters that remain.

Let's get one thing clear. When al-Awlaki started running around with terrorists and became a threat to America, he effectively committed treason as well as renouncing his citizenship. So enough with the President "assassinating" an Amercan citizen.

The President ordered the termination of another terrorist....end of story. I'm surprised at Ron Paul's comments, he usually shows more class than that.

I wonder if its even as possible to capture these people as to assassinate them? This was drone attack. My concerns about drones is that they often kill innocent civilians at the same time, which is not acceptable. Apparently didn't happen in this case. Anyway, we have been doing this for years--just covertly: Allende, Roboldo, and many, many more--duly elected by their people, but they decided that their country's resources belong to their own people, not to us. Those people I weep for, an American of Yemeni origin who returns to his country and is found to have been involved in Al-Queda and specific terrorist plots, not so much.

I think Ron and al-Awlaki were supposed to have tea and crimpets today. Thats why Ron is set against the actions by the US. Why would we vote you in for President Ron when you are sympathetic toward terrorists??? Shouldn't you be worrying about retiring you ol fart!!!!!

P.S. I don't agree with Paul on many issues, I do agree on some, but I heartily support his right to speak his mind and I admire that he often expresses opinions, whether I agree with them or not, that are not politically expedient.

                        Hey Ron Paul,

Don't get on the internet much, huh? He was a terrorist. He advocated killing Americans. He recruited people to do just that. He put it out there for everyone to see. There was no doubt. He's guilty. You reap what you sow in this world. He wanted to bomb America. We bombed him first.

Yes, Timothy McVeigh was also a terrorist. He hated America too. He also bombed America. But unlike this guy, he kept it secret. He planned and executed his plans in secrecy with one other person. They told nobody. That creates doubt as to whether or not he actually did it. That's why he deserved a trial.

Ron Paul is a Constitutionalist through and through. For those of you who don't agree with what he said, you must not understand the concept of due process. It's in the Bill of Rights you morons! The President should be tried for murder.

While Dr. Paul may have something of a point here, I think that the President is making a broader one. Special Ops teams and drones can be extremely effective- without needing to have a lot of boots on the ground.

You think Bush has learned anything? Like maybe killing a few hundred thousand innocent people to get Saddam and over a trillion tax dollars wasn’t necessary? Not to mention 4,000+ dead American soldiers and 30,000+ severely crippled American soldiers. Maybe he had never heard of the Navy Seals or drones.

This is actually a very good argument against some of our current citizenship laws. We should not be granting citizenship to every child that happens to pop on American soil. That was not the founders intent. If we curtailed automatic citizenship for children of foreign nationals, then we would not have Mexican woman dying on our borders in attempts to break water on the northen side of the border.

Pete have you ever heard of the 14th amendment? Unless you are planning to change the Constitution, we are still obligated to enforce it.

We should never blame or fault our government. They would never lie to get us into war or vote for bills that were against the best interest of its citizens. The executive branch, congress and the judiciary are full of unselfish people who want to use their power to make the nation better. Its never about getting reelected. Remember they care about you and your family more than your vote or anything else. The MSM is only trying to help us understand the goodness they spread.

The terrorist got what he deserved. I applaud Obama for continuing (and even stepping up) the Bush policies of taking out terrorist. It is one of the few things he has done that I agree with.

There's an idea, have drone practice attacks on Guantanamo. Two problems solved, a bunch of terrorists killed and no more Guantanamo. Just kidding, of course. We need someplace to dump others that are caught.
