MANCHESTER NH -- Ron Paul aggressively criticized President Obama today for al-Awlaki's death.
"No I don't think that's a good way to deal with our problems," Paul said in a media avail after his remarks at the Politics + Eggs event here. "He was born here, Al-Awlaki was born here, he is an American citizen. He was never tried or charged for any crimes. No one knows if he killed anybody. We know he might have been associated with the underwear bomber. But if the American people accept this blindly and casually that we now have an accepted practice of the president assassinating people who he thinks are bad guys, I think it's sad.
"I think what would people ... have said about Timothy McVeigh? We didn't assassinate him, who certainly he had done it. Went and put through the courts then executed him. To start assassinating American citizens without charges, we should think very seriously about this."
Does he feel the same about Bin Laden? "
Not exactly. "Because he was involved in 9/11 and I voted for authority to go after those individuals responsible for 9/11," Paul said. "Al-Awlaki nobody ever suggested that he was participant in 9/11."

You may be ok with the government breaking the law today when you agree with its action, but what about when they break the law again and you don't agree with their action? This sets a bad precedent and should indeed be condemned. The law is the law and there is no exception for people you don't like or disagree with.
I thought it was very clever of Bush Jr. to turn Saddam over to the Shiites for trial rather than an international court where he might have gotten a fair trial. Kind of like turning OJ Simpson over to the Goldman family. The outcome was not in doubt.
The laws of war are different than the laws of peace. Please try to discern the difference. If al-Awlaki did not make war on the US, he would have been subject to the laws of peace. He chose to join the enemy and make war on YOU. He has received Justice under the laws of war. Any enemy combatant may be killed, and should expect to be killed, by the Glorious and Victorious American Armed Forces.
Gotta love these republicans. Was Paul one of the republicans who thought that Obama should be charged with murder for killing bin Laden? Or was he one of the republicans who said that Obama didn't have anything to do with killing bin Laden because he didn't do it himself?
JimS,
Hey don't stereotype us. Ron Paul is one-of-a-kind, and probably less than 1% of the population, Republican or Democrat, would agree with him on this one.
Ron Paul is for sure less than 1% of the population.
Ron Paul has "converted"......into a bleeding heart liberal. This guy is a farce with absolutely no chance of even being nominated for president.
Honey - not even a "liberal" agree's with this guy on this.
That's the main point across this entire forum. He turned his back to America by plotting to kill Americans and took side with America's enemies. He deserved to be killed where he was killed. He wasn't with his kids having a vacation at a resort. He was at an Al-Qaeda camp plotting against all of us!
Ron Paul is a NUT and should never be President of the United States.
Al-Awlaki was a TERRORIST and made videos stating that he was, and that Americans should die. Proof enough, Ronnie baby. These terrorists are a lower form of life. Lower than a cockroach and should be killed accordingly.
Who's next? Batter up!!
For those of you who write Ron Paul 2012 I wish to acknowledge that you are living a dream! in La La Land! His support in the republican party has maintained a 5-6% level and remember he had to have his own convention in 2008. As a liberal I can't even support his loony tune call for the legalization of drugs! Alzheimer's is a terrible disease!
Ron Paul, nut job extaordinaire.
Wack job deluxe!
No Ron Paul Extraodinarie!Telling the truth!Nobody likes the truth.
Have to wonder if Ron Paul took his meds before he made that statement???? All I know is President Obama is having alot of success in hunting down terrorist and killing them. He is getting more done that the Bush crew ever got done and if you listen to the Right, Obama is suppose to be weak???? Yet as always, he will never get the credit he is due because no matter what the right tells you, his complexion plays alot into the blind hate they feel for the man... Policies my arse, they hate the man because of his color and in their warped minds, only a white Christian male can be President.... That is why Romney cannot win, the Southern Baptist will not vote for a Mormon whom they view as belonging to a "Cult" not a different variation of Christianity... Perry is too stupid and "country".. You know you're a "hick" when the Bush family can not stand you and Christie knows he is not ready and does not want to blow his chance at 2016...
Ron Paul is one stupid and dangerous s.o.b. Those people have no clue what it means to "live in peace", they will continuely attack American citizens and kill them, when ever and where ever they can! Ron Paul believes if we leave them alone, they will leave us alone. Ron Paul is nuts!!
@Kumar, sure, as if Obama had something to do with it. Obama is clueless and the anti terrorist effort is on auto pilot. Obama and Biden haven't seen the ball since the kick off. Get a clue will ya.
Ron: Dude--Bin Laden was never tried. The pirate who kidnapped Americans and was shot in the head by Seal Team 6 sent by order of the President were never tried. You just detest Obama--and you have charged and tried that daily. If it's Principle, what is your position on black-site torture of people who have not been tried, many of whom are never charged with anything, and are then quietly released?
The point is not that killing Bin Laden was good (it was) or torture is bad, although that may very well be. The point is: once again, you are a shameless hypocrite for whom babble substitutes for sense. The GOP loves you sometimes--and runs for cover the rest. You, sir, are goofy. But that's ok--Goofy was goofy too, and has had a prosperous career. It's a free country--still.
As I've said before about this, the guy made a choice. He exercised his free will. He made a choice. He actually committed treason. He publicly announced his intentions. He got what he wanted. He asked for this. I care not for this cretin. If we had tried to capture him, and we lost some of our people in uniform in doing so, would he have been worth it? I think not. Burn in hell.
All this dude talked about was killing AMERICANS. He got his due process. "GOD BLESS AMERICA"
In a nutshell - Ron Paul is a nut.
So from the interview this guy al awai gave, he was not in favor of killing innocent people. So he was killed because we have to many drones with nothing to shoot at? If he was a foreign born proven killer we would kill him first chance, but you have to have rules for killing an American citizen. And there are rules. First you have to convict him. Every American deserves their day in court. When we let them change that, you can be next!!!!!
This idiot WAS tried and convicted, what is it about 9/11 that you dont understand. Our real president (Bush) told us that day we are at war. So now we kill Bin Laden and Alwaki. Good ridence. And if Paul so wishes we can send that texas idiot over there to apologize for us. Then good ridence to him as well. He has no common sense about anything other than getting rid of the fed and going to a gold system. Paul shut the f*** UP.
What's a ronpaul?
Who was it gave the orders in the old West...(Wanted Dead or Alive) on the posters???
I dont know for sure, but i kind of doubt they all had trials and convictions....Has that been changed over the
years perhaps???
Neither was Hitler. This is war we are involved in, not an exercise in American Judicial Law...
Simple math ..... Take AMERICAN Citizenship; subtract advocacy for terror against AMERICAN citizens; and that equals NO AMERICAN citizenship: Take NO american citizenship; subtract formenting terror against American citizens and interest; and that equals FAIR GAME.
He deserved what he got and he isn't an American, by any stretch of the imagination. Geography does not an American make!
. . . and to think that they accuse Obama of being a Muslim.
I think this was his "I am not a Witch", or his "God caused the earthquake to punish DC" moment. Different quotes, same result. Bye Ron Paul!
This is nothing more that RP trying to score political points with the voters. RP is an opportunist. He's certainly not a statesman. He's a loon.
Conservatives are so predictable. Whatever the President does, they say he should have done the opposite. If he says the Earth is round they say, no it's flat. Can't win. The sad part is that these idiots in middle America hang on every word. And the Southern racist only need an excuse to criticize him just so they don't appear racist. LOL What a crazy country we live in.
Sorry Dr. Paul, you just lost my vote.
This guy WAS included in the group approved for capture or extermination by the House and Senate. For my part, he should have been, American citizen or not.
Anyone who commits treason against the United States should be considered an enemy combatant and should NOT be considered as under the protection of the constitution which he was attempting to overthrow.
Yes, it is treason. And the penalty for treason during war time is............?
Thas right.
Yeah the Penalty in war time is death. However you're missing something in this puzzle, you're still tried and then convicted. You forgot to ad that little ditty.
If it was done they way you are explaining it then they could kill whom ever they felt like if they thought it was treason, whatever could be treason in their thought process..Last time I checked we still had due process in this country, and not the kind of laws they have in North Korea!
True, but he wasn't in this country was he? He was persisting in planning attacks on the US and other countries. He made that claim publicly. He himself said that. I shed no tears for this loser.
He had the option of turning himself in. He exercised his own free will. He got what he wanted as far as I'm concerned.
Even if he exercised his own free will, you still don't go out an assassinate him.I'm no fan of this Scum bag.But we have due process here even in war.Well supposedly! This kind of action is dangerous it leaves the door open for the government to assassinate whom ever they deem unsuitable to their cause.O'm being blunt. This country is playing in very dangerous territory, and a very dangerous game. You're putting any american citizens life in jeopardy by opening a pandora's box, by doing this.Believe me!
gloria. anyone who publicly claims to want to attack this country, who wants to kill Americans anywhere in the world, who swears allegiance to any terrorist organization, renounces his citizenship, and actually plans attacks to harm or kill people. well, I don't care. Do you think that man is worth one of our soldiers lives attempting his capture? Or 2? 3? 5? Or any other countries police personnel? No. he's not.
I hope he roasts in hell.
I believe everything the MSM and the government tells me. Why give anyone a trial? Why charge anyone as that just takes time and effort? The enemy (or criminal) is anybody the government says. We should just let the government do whatever it feels like doing and never question the accuracy or objectivity of the news given to us. Afterall, its our civic duty. Its what being a politically-correct, upstanding citizen is all about.
Are you for real?Or are you being sarcastic?
