Paul condemns 'assassinating' al-Awlaki

MANCHESTER NH -- Ron Paul aggressively criticized President Obama today for al-Awlaki's death.

"No I don't think that's a good way to deal with our problems," Paul said in a media avail after his remarks at the Politics + Eggs event here. "He was born here, Al-Awlaki was born here, he is an American citizen. He was never tried or charged for any crimes. No one knows if he killed anybody. We know he might have been associated with the underwear bomber. But if the American people accept this blindly and casually that we now have an accepted practice of the president assassinating people who he thinks are bad guys, I think it's sad.

"I think what would people ... have said about Timothy McVeigh? We didn't assassinate him, who certainly he had done it. Went and put through the courts then executed him. To start assassinating American citizens without charges, we should think very seriously about this."

Does he feel the same about Bin Laden? "

Not exactly. "Because he was involved in 9/11 and I voted for authority to go after those individuals responsible for 9/11," Paul said. "Al-Awlaki nobody ever suggested that he was participant in 9/11."

I think he made his intentions clear via video messages on the internet. Why would Ron Paul pick this fight? Anything to cast shadows on the Obama administration. Let's talk about possible POSITIVE changes, Mr. Paul, not spending time defending terrorists.

Exactly, this seems the most likely explanation.

al-Awlaki was calling to murder Americans. I think, if someone calls* for the murder of other people and instigates murder, which al-Awlaki did many times over, it is the presidents moral duty to stop him.

(*in March 2010 he called for a "holy war" against the US , in May 2010 he asked all US military to kill their fellow soldiers....and he succeded at at Ford Hood masaker)

And we need to wait for a trial, Ron Paul?

While I would normally agree with Ron Paul's comment re whacking a citizen w/o due process, I'm glad we whacked this s.o.b. Remember, he renounced his citizenship. Good 'nuff for me. Nice job, drone pilot and intel.

I have just watched the video of Dr. Paul; he is correct assassinating citizens is a very slippery slope. This person should have been put on trial and then executed.

I'm embarrassed to say I'm a Republican anymore. I don't think Obama's a great president, but the Republicans are hell-bent on disagreeing with anything Obama does, no matter what it is - TO THE TREMENDOUS DETRIMENT OF THIS COUNTRY. Read the Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire. The US is well on the way to being the fodder for the sequel, my friends, and the Tea Party supporters are leading the charge.

Quit being Republican and Democrat and start being an AMERICAN. Hang the politics and the politicians - they are destroying us.

Ron paul is right about so many things. he understands that government should be rarely seen or heard. the only thing they need to do is protect us. if anything we should be killing more people without trials. you must speak in a language that the enemy understands. they dont get fair trials in their perfect worlds, why should they get one here. trials are good for all americans unless they cant prove their not middle eastern.

Get off your self righteous high horse Spanky.  You are on here demanding government spending cuts and supporting tea party candidates and their platform and then you turn around and use the Constitution to justify spending millions of dollars on trials for known terrorists.  You can't have it both ways.  The court system is flooded already, so are our jails and prisons in case you haven't noticed.  Only the lawyers and judges win in a system that says go to court, take it to court. The greedy lawyers will jump on any case as long as it brings them notoriety and big money. Oh and then after you spend millions to try all these terrorists you can put them in your overloaded prisons and pay more millions to house and feed them for the remainder of their time.  Time to pull your head out Spanky and understand you can't have it both ways.

Just because someone was born in America and is an American citizen does not make them a true American. A true American would not plot against his own country and praise the killing of our troops who are fighting the war against terrorism. Ron Paul, you have made a career ending political move here.

To those who say we should have gone in to get this guy, I only wish to point out that we would have had to send our soldiers into harms way to do it. I don't think the Yemenis would have done it, even if we asked them REAL nice like. Yes, our spec ops people are good at what they do, but you only have to look at the failed hostage rescue attempt by Carter to realize that sh*t can, and DOES happen.

As for the guy being an American citizen, he aligned himself with an organization that would see our way of life destroyed. At that point he forfeited his rights IMO.

This was NOT someone confessing his innocence, this was a cold blooded killer who preached murder and urged others to kill Americans.  If we don't have the right to go and find such animals where they live and exterminate them, then we are lost.  Ron Paul is just trying to make headlines, "due process"  you have got to be kidding.  We are at war with the Jihadists, and you don't get due process in war, you get "offed".  Congratulations America, we are all a little safer with this hate filled moron dead and gone.

There are circumstances where due process is suspended. For instance: you have a concealed carry permit and a gun, someone pulls a knife on you, and you fatally shoot them in self-defense.

It's pretty well established at this point that the title "Radical Imam" or, for that matter, a "Radical Priest" of any stripe is no seal of approval.

Religious radicals often pull the knife of fanaticism on the gun of established rule- and the results, when the state takes the threat seriously, are similar to the scenario above.

It is established practice that we now execute those likely to lead, equip, direct, or inspire terrorists whenever possible- with the only due process locating them and confirming their activities. Ron Paul should accept the fact that this fool dug his grave with his own tongue.

Bottom line: no civilized strictures should apply to those who seek to destroy the conditions under which those strictures are possible. Let them receive in advance the fruits of the chaos they intend to create as a perfect and poetic justice.

It should go further, if anything. I firmly believe that religious fanaticism of any kind perpetrated with the intent to harm in the name of any God at all should confer a death sentence. The fanatic in Florida who proposed to burn the Koran should have been shot on declaration of his intention to do so intent for creating circumstances that could have resulted in the avoidable deaths of real Americans- the soldiers doing their duty in the field abroad. The fanatics showing up at the funerals of soldiers waving signs declaring "God Hates Gays"? Ditto- they're committing a hate crime in the name of God.

I believe that God simply doesn't condone hate crimes. People do. Bad people- and if God were inclined to meddle in the affairs of Satan, there would be a lot of folks incinerated by bolts of lightening from cloudless skies. God gives us free will- and that includes the freedom to be evil. His punishment comes in the afterlife, not in this one. I have no problem with acting against murderous evil in this world...and absent divine lightning of retribution, I suppose Predator drones will have to suffice.
