SC GOP ramps up pressure on Florida to keep primary calendar intact

COLUMBIA, SC - The South Carolina GOP did not announce its January primary date, as had been expected, at a press conference Thursday morning.

SC GOP Chairman Chad Connelly said he would hold out on making a final announcement about the date of the South Carolina Republican primary until Florida formalizes the date of its own primary. Connelly explained that he'd gotten indications from the Republican National Committee (RNC) that there's still a chance that Florida might change its date back to February, which would keep the existing schedule mostly intact.

Connelly's calculation is that, if he were to have announced a January date for his state's primary today, he would have been complicit in the violation of the rules for primary dates established by the RNC. He wants to hold out on declaring a final, drop-dead date until tomorrow, when Florida will announce the official date of its primary. (Florida's House speaker has indicated that a state legislative panel is likely to move its primary to Jan. 31.)

Connelly said Thursday that his intentions are to force Florida's hand.

"Today, I want to announce that the ball's in Florida's court," Connelly said at a press conference.

Connelly told NBC that RNC Chairman Reince Priebus has been pretty insistent that there's still a chance Florida might change its date. But Connelly also said, though, that Florida's national committeewoman, Sharon Day, was less optimistic than Priebus.

Upon hearing the news of the Georgia primary going March 6, New Hampshire Secretary of State Bill Gardner said, "Well, I guess it's up to Florida." He remains committed to having a one week buffer on each side of the NH primary but realizes this is a challenge if Florida goes Jan 31.

If he had to move the date up, however, Connelly said he'd be inclined to keep it as close to Florida's date as possible so that, if Florida sticks with Tuesday the 31st, SC would be the Saturday before, because SC voters turn out better on Saturdays.

In neighboring Georgia, the AP reported that the state announced that it would hold its primary on March 6, the date on the primary calendar shaping up to be 2012's "Super Tuesday."

When asked whether holding SC primary so close to FL's would diminish SC's influence, Connelly said candidates ignore SC at their own peril.

"My inclination right now is to keep the calendar as intact, and give some pressure relief especially to the really early states and go as late as I can and as close to whoever pushes the calendar up as possible. So there is no magic bullet about the 7-day window. And I'm more inclined to put it right in front of them.

"Our voters turn out better on Saturdays. And if they pick a Tuesday, I imagine I'd go on the Saturday before."

Connelly also said he's been told by the RNC that the carve-out states would not be penalized, for moving up to January (against RNC rules) as much as Florida will be for moving up before March 6th. SC is trying to avoid a scenario in which they would lose half their delegates to the national convention. Connelly warned he would "pitch a hissy-fit" if South Carolina faced sanctions.

Connelly said he's been talking with the Republican Party of Florida (RPOFL) for months about moving in tandem but those talks seem to have disintegrated for two reasons: 1) the passing of the RPOFL chairman, who had to be replaced very quickly 2) as Connelly puts it, he didn't realize that the RPOFL was "basically unable to influence" the decision of the 9-person Florida primary committee.

He said he talked to Gov. Rick Scott who liked the idea of keeping the dates in tandem but Scott said those decisions weren't up to him.

More broadly, this is a tactic to suppress voter participation of minorities, the elderly, veterans, students, and others who voted for President Obama.

  • Limiting access to early voting by decreasing the number of early voting days including a new outright ban on early voting the Sunday before an election
  • A new requirement that voters changing their address between counties on Election Day must use provisional ballots which are easier to challenge and only counted about half the time
  • Strict new rules on “third party” voter registration groups including fines, registration requirements and time limits on non-partisan civic groups conducting voter registration efforts
  • Restricting access to amending the Constitution by cutting by 50% the time a citizen’s signature is considered valid on an initiative petition

3 wars. Maybe 4 or 5, soon (Yemen, Iran, Pakistan, Syria!)

Record profits to corporations, esp. health and insurance.

startups with 0 business foundation given billions in government-backed loans.

Obama is the best republican president EVER!

No one with an (R) after their name could've gotten away with shifting so much money to the rich.

PS- I was in the military in 2008. I voted for Obama because he promised to end the futile wars. So did my entire company.

They won't make that mistake again.

Drug testing of welfare leeches is a good thing. It cuts costs and cuts resentment among those of us who are supporting the numerous dope fiends using our money to get high. It's pretty telling that liberals would be against such a common sense measure. They correctly assume that people on drugs who lay around all day doing drugs, not working and leeching off the rest of us...are Democrats.

...then certainly you are aware of just how much money was saved in Florida and how many dope fiends got taken off the welfare rolls, yes?

Fla. Welfare Applicants Less Likely To Use Drugs

Preliminary figures on a new Florida law requiring drug tests for welfare applicants show that they are less likely than other people to use drugs, not more.

Preliminary figures show that about 2.5 percent of up to 2,000 applicants for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families have tested positive since the law went into effect in July.

And to think that these people probably get paid huge sums of money to have discussions about what date to have their state primaries.

We could save a lot of time and trouble -- not to mention money -- if we just have a single national primary -- both parties, same date.

But we all know why we don't. Campaigns are big money-makers for the media, and the media are controlled by corporations. For the corporate media's sake, a new primary once a week would be ideal.

Either way, of course, I'm planning to vote in the Republican primary. That way, I can be sure that there's at least one rational vote cast.

By the way, off-topic a little, but on this ongoing discussion about whether a corporation is a person -- if so, then why do we call a corporation "it"?

Shouldn't a corporate person have to make a gender choice?

Like boats, maybe, or him/hurricanes.

Or, are corporations androgynous?

And what would the Evangelicals say about that?

thanks, Da Noid,

all this drama for less than 2% - and guess who's paying for the tests? The person on welfare; but when they are shown to be drug free, they get reimbursed.

Genius plan, insult people, pay additional ADMIN costs that ultimately reduce benefits,...and NO WHERE in the plan do they remove the children of druggies from the situation,...further damning them to a life of poverty and no doubt a need for ADDITIONAL services,...

Man, those GOP'ers thought THIS one up all on their own. Republicans appear to think that Unintended Consequences is a foreign term with which they don't have need of an interpreter.

no joe: How about you? Think these are good ideas- or dangerously crazy ones?

Sorry, no joe. I'm just here between meetings, and haven't read anything about those ideas.

I do think that canceling elections is always a bad idea, though, and putting the government on autopilot is just about where we are now, it seems to me, except we're stuck in reverse.

At least we are in my state. This article is pretty amusing, though --

http://host.madison.com/wsj/news/local/govt-and-politics/article_f2441f26-e9f8-11e0-927d-001cc4c03286.html

Gov. Scott Walker on Wednesday announced he would be calling the Legislature back this week for the second special session of his brief tenure, this one also an effort to kick-start the state's economy through a focus on jobs.

Walker said the "Back to Work Wisconsin" special session, which is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Thursday, should run until early November and deal with roughly two dozen pieces of legislation — many of them proposed by Democrats.

"This is not about Democratic jobs, or Republican jobs, this is about Wisconsin jobs," he said, delivering the news from the warehouse at Thermal Spray Technologies in Sun Prairie. "We want (the Legislature) focused like a laser beam on jobs."

Focused like a laser beam? Really?! Sounds familiar.

Now where have I heard that before?

This guy never has an original thought, does he? If not the Koch brothers, then he even shamelessly pirates from President Obama.

Well, anyway, I see that Governor Beam Me Up Walker now says that the jobs issue isn't partisan.

Seems that two straight months of job losses, after one month of modest job growth, for which he took full credit, have knocked the wind out of our cocky governor's sails.

Tell me again, if you will, WHO won those recall elections?

Or, does he just need the distraction?

It has been a tough couple of weeks for Walker. An ongoing John Doe investigation has reached his doorstep, with some of his close aides being targeted and some people wondering just how far it will go. Some Democratic leaders even suggested the announcement seemed timed to steer news coverage away from the investigation and onto something more popular.

The new loans go to Kaiser - Obama's big fund raiser and Sloyndra investor [cause that went so well]; THe Pelosi family - seems above board, and a giant Reid lobbiest.

So in all its really just a big government funded democratic slush fund.

Oh and Drive By - these loans are also going to companies that will fail - they products are not competitive. Now I would never buy an over priced product. But you libbies are all up on the green and all, so you need to get some of these fantastically overpriced solar panels for your house.

Uh-oh more news from Fisker:

It looks like those eager to finally take a Fisker Karma EV home will have to wait a bit longer, again. This time, though, the delay is largely out of the company's hands, as it's simply waiting for final federal certification on emissions regulations before it delivers the first test vehicles to dealers. According to the company, the first of those are now expected to be delivered by the end of September, although at least some dealers apparently won't be fulfilling orders until the first week of November.

Autoblog Green

Ward's Auto

An Electric car waiting for Emissions certification? Oh yeah it has a gas engine as well.

So the government who lent the company $528 million dollars in 2009 is now holding up the sale of these vehicles, which by the way is now almost 2 years from it's originally promised introduction.

You just can't make this stuff up......

Sorry the when and where stuff is boring.

Obama's illegal alien uncle was in court for the DUI arrest this am. Giggling he was.

So Obama told his town hall yesterday that as long as the illegals were in school or working and not committing crime he would not be going after them.

But they are already here illegally so they are ignoring laws [not to mention ID theft, driving w/o a license or insace, etc.] So do we all now get to ignore laws of our choosing, or is it only the illegals that get to choose to ignore the immigratin laws?

Cause I choose to ignore the tax laws.

Oh and about his uncle - he was arrested for DUI, a crime. Per Obama - he's gotta go, right? Or do we have to wait until he kills somebody?

There has always been articles about Palin and Bachmann's family members here.

When will we get a nice update on Uncle Obama?

The 'brilliant" idea to test Florida residents for drugs when applying for government assistance, will cost the Fl taxpayers over a $1m a year based on numbers so far. There is such a low percentage of positives as 97.5% are proving to be drug free, it will end up costings us more. Really when you think of it, how darethis Governor profile that people in need are drug users, who could afford them anyway, people are more interested in feeding their families and paying rent. Dennis, being a liberal you got a LOT of damn nerve talking about something being a "waste of taxpayers money." Nobody said "liberals" are necessarily lazy losers. For example; Obama and his administration have been VERY BUSY and working hard to screw up the America that we love. Liberals DO seem to make it their business to protect and make excuses for those who want to suck away everyone else's money.

So, what happens when you all run out of other people's money? Oh, I know. Just tax us more.

Da Noid, Thanks for those stats. They show that the program is working. Maybe if other states see these stats, they'll take similar measures.

Is it working? You tell me?

First of all, it was Governor Scott who went on CNN in June and said, "Studies show that people that are on welfare are higher users of drugs than people not on welfare." When pressed for the study that backed this up, the Governor's office gave a study that's 11 years old...

oas.samhsa.gov/2k2/GovAid/GovAid.htm

But, see, here's the thing...with testing now underway, only 2.5% of the tests came back positive. Meanwhile, here's a study in 2009 from the same organization which stated the current rate of drug use among the entire population was 8.7%.

oas.samhsa.gov/NSDUH/2k9NSDUH/2k9ResultsP.pdf

Now, last I checked, 2.5% was not greater than 8.7%...maybe you can double-check my math on that. Going back to the Governor's original statement on CNN, I guess he was telling us a little fib there, don't you think?

Then, factor in that the state has to reimburse the applicants for every negative test. If the first month of testing is any indication, the state will save itself a whole whopping $5000 every month (try not to spend it all in one place).

Still think it works?

For starters, just the idea that people are afraid to use MY money on drugs when they are supposed to be using it to buy pampers for their 5 kids from 3 different fathers, is a positive. They've been put on notice. No matter what the percentage of people actually testing positive, kick em' off. This sets an example for the others. The program is new, correct? Let it take it's course and see how it shakes out. It should be common sense that OUR money given for supposed noble purposes should not be spent on illegal drugs. Besides, if welfare mothers are to scared to spend their money on drugs, that's more they can spend on liquor and lottery tickets. Everybody wins!

There are 3.1 million people on assistance in Florida. What percentage of that is 2000?

While the initial sample is too small to extrapolate from, (and you also left out the 2% who refused to be tested), even if those numbers held, do the math on 2.5% of 3.1 million.

That's a lot of people who should not have their drug habits supported by taxpayers.

I find it interesting that the movers and shakers in the GOP seemed dissatified with their current slate of candidates yet the state parties are jockeying to be the first to hold their primary. It's like they want to hurry up and fail

It is time that we go to a national Primary date! Back when the people running were traveling around in horse drawn carts we needed the primarys done as they are now. But now with TV, Internet and all of the methods to get 'Your' message out to everyone world wide we should go to a national primary date!

Irony? The Republican's inability to solve this "prisoner's dilemma" is proving why we need a strong federal government.

Case in point: It's obvious that the RNC (analog to federal government) needs to step in and propose some sort of selection system regarding primary order that the state parties can agree is fair. Otherwise, the incentive is for each state to move it's primary date forward as far as possible in order to feel as though they've meaningfully contributed to the nomination.

Proposal: I propose ordering the primaries based on a lottery system with the following criteria: (i) every state gets 10 balls in the shuffler, (ii) if state voted Republican in the previous general election, then that state gets and additonal 5 balls in the shuffler and (iii) each state gets an additonal ball in the shuffler for every two electoral votes assigned to that state. Then we draft and assign fixed dates. It could be a "draft day" a la the NFL/NBA and encourage political participation.

    Screw S.C., Iowa, N.H., & Nevada.

We need to overhaul our complete political system, including the 2-Party monopoly.

Why in the world do we continue to allow these 2-bit states to decide who our next President is? These states are spoiled brats. If a candidate doesn't personally come by for dinner, they get upset. Not to mention the tons of money they rake in every four years.

Here's a novel idea: Rotate the states that get to go first. I hope Michigan or another states jumps Florida, then Iowa could have their special attention they crave on Christmas Day.

All this fighting over who first in selecting the TEA party's candidate. Add to that the constant name calling and lies from the FOX-hole and the toxic talking heads spewing their nonsense. Here's the real problem financially. This campaign will continue, while the Terrifying Errant Activist(TEA) party is directly responsible for holding the American economy hostage in a Scorched Earth policy to guarantee president Obama troubles nationwide. The Treasonous Erring Anarchist(TEA) party were willing to take down the US debt even at their own expense! The TEA party led and infused Republican/GOP party are fighting the Sarbanes Oxley act of 2002 and the Frank Dodd Act because these two acts provide guidelines and restrictions put into place resulting from the recession of 2007 and 2008! There were major corporate and accounting scandals like Enron and Worldcom which cost investors billions. The Frank Dodd Act provided a sweeping overhaul of America's financial regulatory system to consolidate agencies, regulate financial markets, implement consumer protection, provide financial crisis tools for the FDIC and improving accounting processes and tightening credit rating regulations.America stands at a cross roads in the next election Are we going to be held hostage by this radical fringe element, or are we going to take our country back?

It is fortunate for the Democrats that early Republican primaries are in bible belt states. By screening out Republicans who fail the fundamentalist-evangelical litmus test, these early Republican primaries favor a candidate whom many East and West coasters will consider unacceptable as a President.

Why haven't the politically savvy operatives in the Republican National Committee figured out a way to implement an early primary schedule that would sample states with diverse economies in the Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, South and West Coast; for example, New York, Florida, Ohio, Texas and California?
