Congress: Vote today to keep government open

"If all goes as planned, the House of Representatives should take just a few moments today to formally unravel a stalemate that had stymied Congress," the Washington Post says. "Their action will provide federal funding for four days. On Tuesday, the entire House will return to action and hold a more formal roll-call vote on a spending measure that will last into mid-November, the product of a bipartisan compromise in the Senate approved on Monday."

Roll Call says it’s Tea Party vs. establishment in the race for who will be the next vice chairman of the Senate Republican Conference – Ron Johnson (R-WI) vs. Roy Blunt (R-MO). "I would bring a slightly different perspective," Johnson said.

Discuss this post

Given the irrationality and intractability of the Tea Party "if all goes as planned" is a critical part of that statement.

Experience has shown, with the 2010 House, that once Tea Party candidates get elected they turn into pork-gobbling establishment Republicans; what's the diff? It's not like you ever hear Tea Partiers offer to give up their government provided healthcare, and all the perks and benefits of holding office, for themselves as well as government funds for their districts.

it's Tea Party vs. establishment in the race for who will be the next vice chairman

Amy,

I am not calling you out in a bad way here, but would like to know based on this "expeience" the pork you are speaking of.

Also, the health care that congress gets is not different than a group plan that most businesses have. Which a portion of the cost is taken from the salary of each member. Not trying to pick a fight, just asking.

Concur with MRWSR.

From what I've heard, the Tea Partiers are so annoying because they are REFUSING pork. :) Which makes them very hard to compromise with.

Do you have anything a little less overtly partisan?

Regarding the healthcare that members of Congress receive, including those Tea Partiers who fight against universal healthcare for all Americans:

By paying a fee of $503 a year, Congresspeople can receive medical atttention at their workplace through the tax payer funded Office of the Attending Physican (do you get that?). These services include physical therapy, examinations, x-rays and lab work. Members of Congress also get outpatient medical and dental care at military hospitals for free. Does your company offer you free care at Bethesda Naval Hospitol?

Seriously. I do want to read any documents proving the TP is going pork-barrel.

I just can't trust something with a disclaimer at the top that, in essence, says 'We protect you from politicians who are all evil and want to rape you and your family and family dog!'

So if you could provide a good source that doesn't reak of left (or right!) wing conspiracy-theory, that'd be great.

MRWSR do you recall how much governor SCOT of Florida pays for family health care THRU a state employee plan? $30 a month, $3600 a year he pays for health care, can YOU tell me and other middle class people where they can get coverage that cheap? And he is a millionaire, he could afford his own doctor and medical facility.

The Democrats want compromise! The Republicans would be hard pressed to want to compromise with socialists and who could blame them! Just look what compromise got Spain, Greece, Argentina, Portugal, and other countries that listened to the Socialists.... economies in bankruptcy!

No thanks, keep socialism out of America!

Greece's financial problems are rooted in the failure of its' populace to pay their taxes. In other words, Greece is the US's future if Republicans are allowed to continue protecting the uber-wealth from paying for the privilege of living in this great nation.

    Amy,

Please tell me what your reading. I do not see your point or your agrument. You are grasping for air. You need to do some serious history lessons in "Pork spending" and why it needs to be reformed. Then you may understand the process and why you are wrong.

The cost of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq was 4 trillion dollars. The Tea Party Repepresentaives in the House don't consider defense spending projects in their districts to be "pork." Were is the money supposed to come from for this kind of spending, if not from taxes from the citizens of this country?

Apparently it's "socialism" if money is spent providing healthcare to the elderly, but money over-spent on defense projects is sancrosant, and it's still borowed money from China.

    Amy,

Spin away. Defense projects are what they are. Dems fight hard for the bases in thier districts and get money too. That is who pays defense, the gov.

Any mandate to have healthcare on a government level is socialism. Your heart bleeds, I know. But if you want to say we don't care and let the children die, go ahead. You have done nothing but spit out lies in every post, so why stop now. It is over for you and the extreme left. I can not wait to see it end.

You are absolutely correct Amy. The flack you are getting on this issue is simply the same, old, tired Republican double standard.

They tell you what YOU advocate is socialism, but what they advocate IS sacrosant and patriotic, and a mandate.

They will learn Nov. 2012 that Americans are sick and tired of their bullying...

    Hang tough! YOU are right!

How can you use partotic and mandate in the same breath. Please, understand the public for the most part is ready to see your "Rules for Radicals" progressive agends die. But, I hope you continue to fight so the people can always see you and know that waiting to try again. I appreciate you post and respect your right to advocate for your beliefs.

      Examples of Tea Party pork:

Bobby Schilling requested $205 million in defense spending earmarks for the same facility in his district he criticized his Democratic opponent of supporting with pork.

Vicky Hartlzer requested $20 million for Whitman Airforce base in her district, after saying she didn't think the ban on earmarks applied to defense spending.

Steve Palazzio ran on a platform advocating banning earmarks, only to continue his Democratic predecessor's programs to direct millions in defense spending projects to his home district.

Lest you think Tea Party reps "only" request defense funding, there is Jon Runyon boasting of his efforts to continue funding sand replacement on beaches in his district and Tim Scott protecting earmarks to fund a harbor dredging project for Port Charleston. It's only pork, you know, if it's in a Democrat's home district.

      Amy,

If you have one or two true pork earmarks from these guys, I would say that is a really good track record for the party. But you could not list the lefts, it would be to much. Again you are grasping for anything that you can, your sources have ?'s as thier headlines and all spectulation. Dig deeper and mabey you will find you have no where to stand. Then when you get up mabey you will stop trying to tell lies and pull people based on misinformation.

      MRWSR.

You are well and truly biased. How can you ignore over a decade of "Bridge to Nowhere" type projects for Alaska, a Tea Party stronghold, with a population smaller than that of Detroit, but scores of hunting lodges for the uber-rich who apparently need roads and other infastructure to enjoy their vacations? Alaska gives it's citizens back $2000 a year from resource royalties, yet they take the third highest amount in federal dollars from the rest of us.

        Amy,

All you have are rants, Alaska can do what it wants. The bridge to nowhere was stoped. I will not argue that I am biased toward the conservative view, you are biased too. (it's ok) Most of Alaska is goverment owned land and parks, so yeah they get a lot fed dollars. Drill in ANWAR and let them pay back.

Amy's right, Pork is Pork. Doesn't matter what the earmark is. Its Pork and communities couldn't survive w/o it. So lets just admit, that the Tea Party is no different that the traditional Repubs when asking for it. I glad my Congresswoman does because her district needs it just as everyone elses needs it. What I find to be old is how Repubs are denying infrastructure funding yet going straight to Ray LaHood and requesting funds for infrastructure in their districts. Thats just plain hyprocisy at its greatest point. Deny everyone else, because the country cannot afford, but for their districts, its dire and needed badly
