Florida's likely move would reshuffle primary calendar

Political world -- get ready to spend New Year's Eve in Des Moines. Again.

Florida House Speaker Dean Cannon confirmed to NBC News that the Sunshine State will likely hold its primary on the last day of January.

"It is more than speculation. It's my expectation that Jan. 31 will be the date," Cannon said.

And if that's Florida date, it will force the early contests of Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina -- which all had been scheduled to begin in Feb. 2012 -- to move up to January.

If that happens, the Iowa caucuses could take place in early January, while the New Hampshire primary would probably occur a week later. The South Carolina Republican Party will announce its primary date at a news conference tomorrow morning.

In Florida, Cannon helped select the nine-person committee that will vote on the state's primary date at a meeting this Friday. Because it is still up for a vote, it should be noted that Jan. 31 is only the LIKELY date; it is not set in stone. But Cannon said he has spoken to Florida Gov. Rick Scott and Senate President Mike Haridopolos -- both of whom also selected members for the committee -- and everyone is on the same page about the Jan. 31 date. So Cannon expects the vote to be unanimous.

By holding the primary before March 6, Florida will violate rules set by the Republican National Committee and could lose half of its delegates. Cannon said the committee has taken into consideration the possible RNC punishment, but an early position on the primary calendar outweighed the threat of losing delegates. "It's more important that Florida voters voices be heard than to stringently comply with GOP rules," he said.

Cannon said Florida wanted to be fifth in the presidential nominating process, and the Jan. 31 date would still allow Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada, to hold their place as the early primary and caucus states.

Chris Cate, spokesman for Florida's Secretary of State, said there has been no formal communication out of the Secretary of State's office and other early voting states, but both he and Cannon acknowledged the likelihood of informal talks.

pitmanlaw....I sure hope Obama is as over confident as you seem to be. Stay laser focused now and have your shovel ready as you do not want to miss next years 2nd anniversary of "recovery summer". No party at the White House to celebrate the 1st anniversary this summer. Wonder why? Obama never misses an opportuntiy to throw a party. Maybe that almost trillion dollar "stimulus" plan that was, according, to Obama going to keep unemployment at 8% and under spoiled the party. Maybe he had second thoughts about having a party due to his statements when he was elected that he would "fix" the economy in 3 years and cut the deficit in half. Oh, Obama sure can "talk". The only things that is up after 3 years of Obama is unemployment, the national debt, healthcare costs and gold prices. You are right, it won't even be close.

". The only things that is up after 3 years of Obama is unemployment, the national debt,

It kills me when you conservatives talk abut the national debt like your guys have had no part in it.

Reagan incresed the debt 275%, Dubya almost as much. Obama could spend another 5 trillion and still not be in their league. Last president to post a surplus was Wild Bill Clinton,a democrat.

Not surprised you missed the point. The time has come to end the massive spending before it is too late. It is too late to argue who got us here. Obama seems to be on your page. Lets just blame someone else and keep spending. Obama is a poor leader, bottom line Obama is not going to make decisions in the best interest of the country, he is more concerned about reelection, and denies that is his focus. When it is obvious. Some of us see through this "empty suit" called Obama.

For a long time, when the debt grew in the post-World War II era, it grew only about as fast as overall GDP, so proportionately, while hardly commendable, it was somewhat manageable. This began to disintergrate under Bush II, destroying the brief period of mixed control under Clinton when it was actually being paid down, and now is almost completely out of control. Now the President proposes as a "cure" for our economy more of what has driven it down, and basically destroyed Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain, etc.

I don't think the eventual Republican candidate is in the running yet. Those in the debates, except Ron Paul, sound completely stupid. They show no ability to win in the general, which is fine with me. In my opinion, another full control to the Republicans will finish this nation off by making it a Neo Third World America.

As an independant, it is clear that real Conservatives are an endangered species. OK, so are real Liberals. The parties have all moved so far to the right they have become a danger. This has been exasperated by the terminally stupid Supreme Court mandate that money must be considered speech. That took the one man one vote aspect of our democracy out of the mix. We have morphed into a Dictatorship.

Thanks to the smartest president ever chastising the justices for campaign finance at the state of the union, ObamaCare could very well be history.

I wish that the Ron Paul loony-ness would stop. As a conservative myself, I do believe he has good ideas, but he is such a bumbling dweeb. He just seems senile by his incoherent ramblings and jumps from one topic to the next without taking a breath.

Who do I support? John Huntsman. But that man ain't gettin' nowhere!

You're a "conservative" yourself, but you support Huntsman? Do you mean that you're a conservative compared to President Obama? At least you realize the probablility of his nomination!

That's great. The sooner the better. Like to see who the nominees will be. Obama may very well be looking for another job even before the general election if his job approval rating continues on its downhill slide.

Well pit, I don't know if your prediction can be taken as gospel or not, but I do know that the biggest mistake a politician can make is to underestimate his/her opponent (misunderestimate for those of you who enjoy a good Bushism every now and then).

I believe that all those Republican presidential candidates are fully aware that this President has already proven that he is a formidable opponent full of charisma and charm. I seriously doubt that any of them think this campaign is going to be a walk in the park.

We need Repub. Gov. Chris Christie for many reasons, the least of which is his almost non-partisan style of leadership. He works with the Dems in NJ and has very favorable poll numbers.

Read about Christie from last night's speech: "Christie spoke extensively about foreign policy, saying gridlock and inaction in Washington reflect poorly on the country on the international stage. On domestic policy, Christie repeated familiar themes about reining in entitlements and creating jobs, saying Obama “insists we must tax and take and demonize those who have already achieved the American Dream." "That may turn out to be a good re-election strategy, Mr. President, but is a demoralizing message for America,” Christie said. “There is, of course, a different choice.”

Leona - I lived in New Jersey - did you? Christie is no better than any of the Republican Govenors - break the Unions - get rid of bargaining rights - actually he lied to the Democrats to get them on his side and then when they voted for him - he reneged on his promises - do you know what he said - so what - I guess his word is meaningless - so what? This is a man you trust - my word is not my bond? Aside from that - he probably will be more than once hospitalized - for his asthma - he is a glutton - and what is a glutton somebody that cannot control their cravings - eats because of what - insecurities

                          Iranian ships approaching

How is the GOP going to handle this situation?

                          Iranian ships approaching

Here is something that Iran is planning on doing that should send shivers down everyones backs.

They are planning to send warships as close as possible to America shores.

Iran planning to send ships near U.S. waters. CNN.com

The war in the Middle East may be taking a dramatic turn with Iran stepping in to possibly prevent Syria from being next on the list of terrorist countries taken down by Barack the Black.

(CNN) -- Iran plans to send ships near the Atlantic coast of the United States, state-run Islamic Republic News Agency reported Tuesday, quoting a commander.

"The Navy of the Iranian Army will have a powerful presence near the United States borders," read the headline of the story, in Farsi.

America wants an answer. Hopefully the answer revolves around sending warships to intercept the flotilla before it arrives. America needs to be careful with the Iranian fleet approaching our coast. They can simply launch a few submersibles that could mix in with the local whale or fish migratory schools that would be discounted by our attempts to locate them. The next thing you know America is under attack again just like what happened on December 7th, 1941 when the Japanese launched secret attacks against America when the flight of 300 planes were mistaken as a flight of B-17's.

America needs to goto defense condition red until the Iranian fleet returns to Iran.

With Obama in office, America will do nothing. Remember Carter and Iran?

As far as looking back at 1941 and trying to make this as the same, this is the 21st centry. Hve you seen the tools we now have?

I just hope and pray the Perry and Romney aren't the winners in any of the primaries. Romney is a RINO from Mass. and Perry is a Republican Democrat from Texas. God help us if either of these two win because no one else could save us. Might as weel send Obama to Camp David and tell him to come back after the election and decide how he want to decorate for Christmas this year. Cancel the moving an he isn't going to need it.

As I said earlier, soon there will be primaries the day after the next president is sworn in. This whole thing of jumping ahead of each other is ridiculous and just designed to be "the one" to help pick the next president. The GOP and Demo party need to get their butts in gear and just say "No!" to too early primaries that are just designed to maneuver in front of someone else for their own gain.
