New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's speech tonight at the Reagan Library will be closely scrutinized for any sign that the brash GOP icon has changed his mind, and will run for president.
All signs point to Christie reaffirming his earlier commitment to stay out of the race for the 2012 GOP nomination -- the governor's brother said Tuesday that he will not run -- but his declaration may well force some top-dollar Republican donors to finally move off the sidelines, and commit to a candidate currently in the race.
The New York Times profiled a series of deep-pocketed Republicans, who have helped fuel the "Draft Christie" movement, which has persisted for months despite the first-term governor's insistence that he's not seeking national office. Home Depot founder Kenneth Langone is widely identified as the impetus behind that movement, but he and a series of other Christie supporters might be forced to reconsider their options if the Garden State governor ultimately decides not to run.
"There are a lot of guys with a Romney bumper sticker on their desk, but are waiting to put it on their car," said one Republican tied into the party's fundraising circuit, who declined to speak on the record so as to not alienate donors.
Indeed, there's already a bit of overlap. One potential Christie backer named in the Times story, the investment guru Charles Schwab, sent Romney a $2,500 donation in late June. The other potential Christie backers named in the story have otherwise stayed out of the presidential race, though they have already been active in contributing to GOP House and Senate campaigns.
That leaves Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the two frontrunning candidates for the GOP nomination, battling for an edge in the contest for financial support. Both men are seeking not only an advantage in their campaign warchests, but also in support from high-profile donors, whose backing would signal that the smart money is leaning toward one campaign or another. Moreover, those top donors could also help "bundle" money for the primary campaigns, and help multiply the fundraising haul for Romney or Perry.
"There's no question, there's money on the sidelines right now, and I wouldn't say it's on the sidelines for any particular candidate," said another Republican consultant, who requested anonymity in order to speak candidly about the race.
"I think it's only natural, because people like to be with a winner, and they're all waiting to see because, to be honest, nobody's knocked anybody's doors off," the consultant added. "The debates have raised some doubt about Perry, but it's not like anything's not recoverable. But if you're looking at Romney, you're asking, 'Why hasn't this guy locked it up yet?'"
Political observers will have a better sense of just how much money has come off the sidelines in the middle of the next month. Each presidential campaign is required to report their fundraising hauls and itemized contributions and expenditures to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) by Oct. 14. Those reports cover the campaigns' fundraising activities between the beginning of July and the end of this month. Those filings will also include new data about which mega-donors have contributed to candidates in the past three months.
Those reports themselves are a metric for the media and potential donors who are looking to gauge the strength of a given campaign. And Romney and Perry's totals could be tempered by donors who have adopted a wait-and-see attitude. Those donors are generally seen as the same crowd that had pined throughout 2011 for new candidacies -- from, for instance, Sen. John Thune (R-SD), Govs. Haley Barbour (R-MS) and Mitch Daniels (R-IN), or Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) -- that never came to fruition.
Perry's campaign has sought to keep expectations low, setting a $10 million bar for itself to clear in a shortened third quarter (since Perry didn't become a candidate until early August). Romney, meanwhile, is looking to eclipse a $18 million haul for the second quarter, a total that far surpassed any other candidate, but which didn't quite meet the high expectations that had been set for his long-planned campaign.
Christie's potential fundraising base lies primarily in the New York Metro area, which includes a number of financial services professionals. If Christie declines to run, and donors are forced to choose, those supporters may flock to Romney, who's mined his business background to build his campaign war chest. But Republicans also caution that Romney and Perry have streams of revenue available to them beyond heavyweight donors who have declined to back a candidate so far. Romney is independently wealthy and could self-finance (though he's said he isn't interested in doing that), and has access to a network of wealthy Mormon business owners. Perry, meanwhile, has a deep fundraising network cultivated during years of statewide races in Texas. Perry’s brief stint as Republican Governors Association chairman, from which he stepped down to run for president, also helped expose him to a national fundraising network.
Speculation is on the rise that New Jersey Governor Chris Christie will jump into the 2012 race. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

igloo --- romney still believes corporations are people. how ridicules. at least romney's old man knew how to create jobs. all mittens did was ship jobs overseas. his old man was twice mittens ever was. this is what happens when the seed runs thin. nothing but a talking suit, no substance.

I hate to be the one to bring this up, but here goes: One thing that has helped Christie in the past and stands to help him in the future is ---- his obesity! No one wants to mention it. But if you look at any of a number of state by state or county by county representations of overweight and obesity, you will see that states (and counties) which are heavily Republican are also very heavy weight-wise. In fact, GOP-leaning states have almost 10% more obese people than Democratic-leaning states.
This may seem like a small thing and far removed from politics, but overweight and obese individuals see other "heavy" people as very empowering. They really have little use for slim trim politicians if an alternative is available.
It's past time to end these "fat cat" donations.

Christie is a political gangster for Wall Street and the rich. I think you have to be a masochist, very naive or brainwashed to vote for an @!$%# like that.
It never ceases to amaze me how normally decent, sane people will swoon and vote for someone they would hate if they were their neighbor.
"George" because people have a propensity for voting against their own self interest all the time. Ideology is blinding and distorts the truth. The sad part is that most of the country is "middle class" in terms of wealth accumulation. The top 400 richest people earn more than 95% of the country and are wealthier than many actual countries. However, the corporations and republicans do an excellent job at distorting reality and creating fear and resentment. Beyond ideology, why would it make any common sense to vote republican based on their platforms? If any rational person listened during the republican debates, what would leave you to believe (if you were middle class) that any of them would appeal to you?

I'm sure if I had a tricked-out ride like you do (tell us again, please!) or was rich like you (tell us some more!) and traded in my car for a new one every three years, I might think twice about the bumper stickers, too. But alas, I can only afford a six-year-old Honda Civic that I plan to get at least six more years out of (barring further encounters with drunk drivers), so the bumper stickers aren't going to hurt my re-sale value at all. They get a lot of attention and I've gotten into some great conversations with strangers in parking lots because of them. I change them around a lot, but at the moment, Obama 2012 is sitting between my favorite one that I've replaced twice now - "I love my country but I think we should start seeing other people" and a recent acquisition attributed to Kurt Vonnegut - "True terror is waking up one day and realizing your high school class is running the world".
Oh, and sorry, but Trapper Keepers came along after I was out of high school. My crushes were all sports stars back then, not rock stars, anyway. I had the full-length poster of Mark Spitz in a speedo, does that count? :)

How embarrassing is it for the present republican candidates that the republican establishment to be pleading and begging other republicans to run against them, certainly indicates a vote of no confidence with regards to their current lineup. If republicans can't get excited about their candidates, I doubt if independents and democrats will.

Hey Spanky I wrote you a long reply on a post 4 days ago about mechanics the day you were putting brakes on your car, the title of the article was about CPAC, if you get a chance to read it.
He is a sexual heavyweight, he makes the women swoon, and I think it is safe to say he don't appear to have HID aids, I think he might use Rod Stewart's silly song "Do You Think I'm Sexy" for his campaign music.
Seriously I think when this candidate searching goes on and I agree it does, but it is usually a little more low key and behind the scenes as for as the party establishment is concerned, I have never seen them do it in public quite like this before.

Let's just watch and see. Compromise use to be how our country was run. The right extreme and the left extreme did not get what they wanted and always compromised near the middle.
When you are an adult, compromise is what you try to do. When you are president your allegiance is to our country and to keep it running unlike the tea party whose signed and pledged allegiance is to Norquist and his rich friends who stated goal is to kill America.

The republican plan is for everyone to sacrifice except the very richest. What if Romney after tearing down a 12 million dollar house could only build a 40 million dollar house instead of a 50 million dollar house, the horrors of it all.
How absurd that we should ask the rich to pay the same percentage of income as the rest of us. We need to scrape and sacrifice and the rich need to keep having the government borrow money and add to the debt so they can keep their tax cuts. The tea party doesn't seem too worried about that kind of spending, but if you are in a natural disaster and suffering then spending is a concern.

We were absurd for many, many years, we made them pay a bigger percentage than us and most Americans better off and the economy was stronger and better off during those years. That is a fact. The economy and Americans having been losing ground ever since we cut taxes to the level they are now, so I would have to completely disagree.

Mitch you are the most taken advantage group there is. You are being used to never raise taxes on the rich. You are being used to kill education so the rich will never have to pay fair taxes. You are being used to rob people of their retirements so the rich will never have to pay fair taxes.
You say you feel that you are Taxed Enough Already. You may be but your cost will go up way more than taxes just to keep the rich from ever having to pay fair taxes. Like in Texas (Perry), the richest taxes did not go up, but all the poor and middle class sending their kids to public schools now have to pay $600 a year per child fee to ride the school bus. The working poor and the middle class will always pay for the richest in America tax cuts.

I don't believe that the super-wealthy are trying to "save" any money, not while they're out there buying $10,000 bottles of champagne, new yachts, and going on elaborate vacations all over the world. No Republicans seem to be doing any saving there.

After reading a report that Costco always donates heavy to Democrats I started shopping there more. Home depot is not a problem for me as I use a local hardware and garden store for my needs.

ripcity ... I've been calling these Repub candidates "kamakazes" for a year now ... all of 'em will crash & burn. Once cornered on stage, and made to commit & explain their platform, (cut entitlements, cut taxes for the wealthy & corporations) and bam, down they go ... one by one. You just got to look closely at who's pushing these ragtag candidates into the ring ... the Tea Party ... if they don't stand for Tea Party principles, they don't get the support, period!
The "IN" thing now, is while these Repubs are in the public interest, is to WRITE A BOOK and make millions off the book ... these REPUBS are all about MONEY ... nothing else! Chris Christie is just about one bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken away from needing triple bypass surgery. He once had to have a helicopter transport him about 300 yards because he did not want to walk that far. Running for President is a marathon and I do not think he is fit enough to make it to the finish line.
He will have to roll over the competition.
Unfortunately the American people will more than likely pick Perry or Romney. The American people are just not ready yet for someone who is not main stream politics.

It is a good thing for Republicans that they were able to keep it quiet long enough to make it look like it was on Obama's watch. GaryK, obviously you didn't do your homework on Fast & Furious. It began in 2005 in Texas under Project Gunrunner under Perry. Then under Bush it was run nationally. And as far as Solyndra goes, it did well for a while until other corporations began making the same product in China - cheaper but less quality. But people bought it because it was cheaper. Now let's talk Haliburton's no-bid contracts and the fact their electrical construction killed some of our soldiers. And I'll bet those families haven't heard a thing from Haliburton or Cheney/Bush.
