Obama's 'stop grumbling' speech prompts some grumbling

By msnbc.com's Michael O'Brien

President Obama's fiery speech to the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Foundation's dinner on Saturday evening drew a stiff rebuke Monday from Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.), who questioned whether it was warranted for the president to tell black voters to "stop grumbling" and "put on your marching shoes."

"Some of his words were not, I think, appropriate and surprised me a little bit," Waters said Monday morning on CBS. "I was curious about it."

But other members of the CBC, including its chairman, Missouri Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D), have had different reactions to the speech, which they defended as a rallying call to African American voters, whose large turnout in 2008 helped fuel Obama's election, and whose 2012 turnout could be pivotal to the president's reelection effort.

"The Congressional Black Caucus supports the president; we intend to be as strongly pushing his reelection as anybody in the country," Cleaver said Monday morning on MSNBC.

"I was like most of the crowd there -- incredibly enthusiastic by the fighting spirit the president was showing. I think the president is right-on-message," Maryland Rep. Donna Edwards (D), another CBC member, said in a separate appearance on MSNBC. "I think it's incredibly clear, the difference, like night and day, between Republicans, who want to give special breaks to the wealthiest in this country, and the president of the United States. And it's important that we reelect him because we have to really get this country back...the president was on that message, and we're going to be on that message, too, for 2012."

Obama's speech on Saturday night to the CBC largely served as an animated -- if sometimes blunt -- call to action for black voters to get in line ahead of a tough reelection battle.

"I expect all of you to march with me and press on. Take off your bedroom slippers, put on your marching shoes," Obama said. "Shake it off. Stop complaining, stop grumbling, stop crying. We are going to press on. We’ve got work to do, CBC."

The nation's first African-American president has weathered some criticism that he hasn't done enough via his economic plans to help the black community, which has been disproportionately affected by the recession. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the black unemployment rate stood at 16.3 percent at the end of August, well above the national average of 9.1 percent.

Waters, who endorsed then-Sen. Hillary Clinton over Obama in the 2008 Democratic presidential primary, has been one of the president's top critics within the CBC. She publicly criticized the president last month at a town hall meeting in Atlanta hosted by the CBC, where she described a "growing frustration" with the president within minority communities, and questioned why Obama's August bus tour didn't stop in any predominantly black areas. She suggested Monday that Obama would never speak to Hispanic, gay rights, or pro-Israel groups the way he spoke to the CBC.

(The president has delivered a similar message, though, in recent days. Obama told supporters last night that "I may need you to have some arguments with our progressive friends," admonishing them against becoming "dispirited" because the administration wasn't able to achieve everything its liberal supporters had wanted.)

Obama's speech Saturday didn't make any reference to Waters, but contained unmistakable political undertones as Obama begins to ramp up his reelection effort. A NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll earlier this month found that Obama's support from black voters remained high; 92 percent of black respondents approved the way Obama is handling his job, while just five percent disapproved.

Those numbers raise questions about the extent to which Obama will be able to lean on the black vote in 2012 the way he did during his initial campaign, especially in potential swing states like Virginia or North Carolina, where African American turnout tipped the scale toward Obama.

"Trying to get the maximum turnout is going to be challenging, there's no question about it. I'm not going to pretend that it's going to be easy or even comparable to what we had three years ago," Cleaver said, acknowledging the challenges facing the president's reelection. But the CBC chairman argued that that's why it was important for Obama to begin his outreach efforts now.

"If we make a decision to stay home next year for the 2012 presidential election, we're making a decision to put someone out of the White House who genuinely wants to stop the bleeding, if you will, of those who are unemployed," he said.

I agree with the president...It is time for Blacks to stop complaining and empower themselves individually to a better life. Blacks make up 16% of the population and 17% of all college students are black. Compared to whites making up 64% of the population; yet, only 37% attend college. So blacks as a percentage of the population are quite fairly represented in pursuit of a college degree and a better way of life. Now, go out and earn a living. Their not all going to become rich and famous. Some will rise to the top and some will sink. The government shouldn't be there as a safety net for them JUST BECAUSE THEY'RE BLACK!!!

RIght on OBAMA....Give me some skin!!!!

Oh, poor poor Feisty. The media says something that isn't positive toward the president and suddenly the media is to blame for lame reporting. Whenever the same media outlet blast away with negative comments about the GOP, the media is spot on and showing responsible reporting.

Get a grip Feisty. The president isn't without flaws. The democrats aren't without flaws. Learn to accept criticism if you are going criticise others and accept the fact that there are two edges to the sword. If you are going to give praise for the media about negative comments about the GOP (as you do almost everyday), accept the same when they report negative comments about the democrats. If not, you will continue to prove that you like most others anywhere left of middle are simply incapable of acting in a mature manner.

He has to keep on his message and stay out there in front and fight like hell for it for 8 or 9 more months before he makes that speech again, if he wants both my honest opinion and my best political advice.

Funny thing about the President and DC in general- He calls for uprising, but only by those whom support him. He calls for fiscal responsibility, but berates the Tea Party for trying to get fiscal responsibility. He calls for "green jobs", but squanders millions in half thought out, lobbiest leveraged loans to bad companies. He calls for transparency, but just sent the State Department employee involved in "Fast and Furious" on tour over in Iraq so that they can't speak to Congressional investigators. We also just learned that the BATFE used TAXPAYER DOLLARS to buy "Fast and Furious" guns, then resold them to known illegal gun merchants. Funny thing, they didn't GPS or track those guns beyond their sale- just like the other 2,000+ that passed under their watch.

It's time for a wholsale change in Washington. Get rid of all of these corrupt, self serving politicians and get some reformers in all ready!

Grump - I'll give you your first vote. I agree exactly. It was a bit of a bad political move or maybe simply a bad catch phrase. This is what Democracy looks like Mr. President, people who are inclined to support you will grumble to get your attention. They want you to fight for them and broader democratic party ideals. Although I am not a member of that constituency, he should not tell me or them what I should grumble or what politics to push for.

To counteract the eventual Obama supporter who will question our grumbling, yes Obama is better than the GOP. However, should we allow him to continue some of his current GOP leaning policies meekly and quietly in the background? I say no. We should, respectfully ask him and his team to further our voices. What better way for him to hear us then with loud grumbling.

Wow! Treated like a bunch of sheep by one of their own. Who'd a thunk. Of course, Obama is very racist and should be called to task. Can you imagine what would happen if a white candidate did this with a white audience?

But, the bottom line is Obama and all the rest of the black leadership feel they've got blacks pegged to a T. No need to have any policies that will help them. Just tell them to shut up and vote for the dem. After all, there's obviously no reason to worry about producing results, they're black after all, and results don't matter. Just look at all the unmarried blacks having kids and having abortions. Look at the decline of the black family since LBJ's Great Society! Of course, the so-called leaders know they don't have to produce results. With all the programs directed at the poor and blacks in particular, you'd think that they would be living high off the hog by now. But, for some reason, that's not the case. Personally, if I were black I would be offended as hell. Listening for the last 50 years to all these "brothers" who are leading us and convincing us that the economics of the white folk is different than the economics of the black folk. So, we been getting all this "special" economics, and yet things are getting worse. How can that be? Don't know, but they are the self proclaimed leaders of blacks, so got to vote for them.

What matters is the way forward.

Fareed Zakaria's program on CNN about restoring the American Dream, for example, talks about Kay Bailey Hutchison (Republican and former bank executive) wanting seed money for a bank that could provide loans for construction. In addition, the president has worked with business to set-up an organization to promote tourism to the US, which has plummeted since 9-11 due to strict visa and security that followed, but also because unlike other countries, the US has done nothing to promote tourism. The president has also worked with manufacturing, because it is being learned that innovation goes where manufacturing goes, and that the work force in America is actually better.

But none of this is getting support from the Teapublicans--not even Kay Bailey Hutchison's idea. For two reasons: 1) The Tea Party is obsessed with "starve the beast" of shrinking government to the point of blindness, and; 2) The Republican Party in general is so determined not to give President Obama one iota of support they not only block such measures, they actually undermine and sabotage any and all solutions.

The President is right about getting out the vote. Not just the Democrat base, but all Americans who realize the Teapublican alternative would be disasterous. Obama/Biden - 2012!

LOL, apparently you are unaware of how the Bush tax cuts were passed. First, these had to be passed via reconciliation because Republicans could not get support even though they had a majority. The second round, which was passed after the invasion of Iraq, required Cheney's vote to break the tie. Whereas the Affordable Health Care Act, which is really just insurance regulation, was passed with a filibuster-proof super majority.

But now the Teapublican threat downs and hostage taking make all that look like a Sunday picnic. And what are we seeing already? Another government shut-down threat because Teapublicans don't want to provide disaster relief for our own citizens without off-sets that are unrelated and obviously agenda driven.

Me thinks thou doth drink too much FAUX Noise and Hate Radio Kool-Aid. And the only reason we don't hear GOP/TP candidates telling their base to stop grumbling is because the GOP/TP Borg will march lock step to the voting booth no matter how shoved up the arse their candidate choice is.

MSNBC's version: "Shake it off. Stop complaining, stop grumbling, stop crying."

Reality: "Shake it off. Stop complainin'. Stop grumblin'. Stop cryin'."

AS THE POT CALLS THE KETTLE BLACK!

"I expect all of you to march with me and press on. Take off your bedroom slippers, put on your marching shoes," Obama said. "Shake it off. Stop complaining, stop grumbling, stop crying. We are going to press on. We’ve got work to do, CBC."

The hypocrisy of the Grumbler in Chief would be funny if it wasn't so pathetic.

All of a sudden, after 3 years of blame, finger pointing, flip-flopping, flop-flopping and hypocrisy Barrack Hussein does what all Socialists Liberal Progressives do. Use his minority base, again. As Barrack has been prancing around in his bedroom slippers for his entire presidency, now he demands that the people he has ignored march for his cause.

And the worst thing is, once again, the lemmings will blindly follow as his only concern is to take more of their hard earned money and their precious vote. For nearly 3 years he has done absolutely nothing to improve the most important problems our nation faces. Jobs, unemployment, debt and most importantly, a nation divided. Now, all of a sudden, Barrack Hussein is the born again job creator and unifier. Now all of a sudden, as his presidency is in shambles, he expects the same people he has dismissed to carry him. Where was his "leadership" in creating jobs, improving the economy and bringing the American people together as a nation. You can't lead from the golf course.

This is the clandestine agenda of the Socialists Liberal Progressives. As much as they want everyone to believe they are for the minority, for the exploited, for the "little guy", all you have to do is look and see the typical results of this never ending abuse. More unemployment, more poverty, more dependence and more hopelessness. The inconvenient truth of Barrack Hussein and the Liberal Progressive agenda is to use these same people only when they need them. Now when his polling is crashing and the country sees what a horrible mistake they made in 2008 he is, once again, misleading them that he cares about them.

This is not a new revelation. As the Liberal Progressive manipulation continues they just throw out enough rope for Hope and Change to keep them in line. Unobtainable promises have become the hallmark of the Liberal Progressives. In 1960 we had a poverty level of 14%, today it is 15.1%. This after an estimated $12-$19 TRILLION Dollars has been wasted on the "War on Poverty". Fifty one years of lies, promises and abuse and the minorities STILL believe the Liberal Progressives give a damn about their plight. The only thing Barrack Hussein cares about right now is to mislead them into believing he cares, again.

Of course the bogeyman for the Liberal Progressive is always the wealthy, successful and job creators. They will demonize everything they have done in life to disenfranchise the "base" but then turn right around and demand these same evil rich people pay for more of the failed Progressive ideology. This is the epitome of their hypocrisy. The usual solution of Progressivism is take from the "haves" and give it to the "have nots". So, just how well have the TRILLIONS of dollars we have wasted, helped? Where are the minority advocates demanding change in the family, in the community, in the individual? They don't want them to change, they like them just where they are. Manipulated, uneducated and dependent.

These are the marching shoes Barrack Hussein and the Liberal Progressives want them to wear now. After he's re-elected he will be very happy to throw them a few crumbs, some more Hope and Change and the result will be the same as it's been for decades. Forgotten. This is the classic definition of "Bread and Circuses" that Liberal Progressives have mastered for so long. As the poor stay poor and controllable, the Liberal Progressives will throw some more freebies at them to keep them happy and quiet and then walk away. Give them the appearance of caring for them while the intended agenda is to maintain the staus quo.

Hopefully, someday, the poor and minorities will wake up and realize how horribly they have been used to further the Liberal Progressive agenda. Every entitlement, social program and promise has been used to keep them shackled and desperate. Abuse of the system is profligate and allowed, if not encouraged. This is the result of social and economic justice for the collective. Throw them a life preserver but never allow them to get back in the boat. Do this long enough and, in the meantime, challenge them to take off their slippers and put on their marching shoes, again.

And again, and again, and again,,,

Ms. Waters has always had her marching shoos on but what
she doesn’t understand is that many of her followers are sitting back watching
her march for them and expect our President to do the same.

Nooid - it woujld seem that the last three years have demonstrated precisely who was not ready for prime time.

WCA - that is the super funny thing about so many of our libbie friends here - they never do seem to think about what they are posting, and how their insults apply so precisely to Obama.

Like Amy earlier - to her it's the repw "sel-destructing." That of course implies that she knows Obama is losing. Every thing she says always applies more to Team Blue.

And of course NoJO - Obama has failed on every score. He did "get" Osama, but then Biden opened his fat mouth and exposed Seal Team 6, most of whom are dead now.

Oh, well.....guess I'll just run right out and sign up to work on the Perry campaign now, since he obviously represents my values so closely. No, wait - Romney.....he hasn't failed me yet, has he? Or should I go with Cain and hope for free pizza for the volunteers? No, I've got it......"Hi, my name is JoAnne and I'm calling (giggle, giggle) to tell you why (chuckle, chuckle) you should really vote for Michele (snort, snort) Bachmann....." - nah, that's never gonna work. Not a Truepatriot,

You mean like all the Partisan stuff he rammed through Congress in 2009 and 2010. Not to mention the Bush era tax cuts, or wait was that the price he paid for the 1 Rino vote it took to get everything else passed. I know you will blame it on that since Democrats held a super majority in 2009 and 2010 and only needed one Rino to vote with them in the senate.

Oh wait they had those super majorities in 2007 and 2008also. Hmm everything started to come apart in 2008, I wonder if that was a coincidence. Considering the Republican majority house hasn't been in place for a full year yet and they are responsible for everything, but the majority Democrats in both the senate and house had over a year before the crash and more than two years afterwards to fix it.

    This is the inconvenient Truth

Oh, Alan, NJ, get real, that's just silly. Maxine Waters is a hard working legislator but she and other democrats simply do not march lockstep as the GOPTP does--they think for themselves, and are not afraid to speak up. When a GOPTPers speaks up or objects, they immediately run to Rush Limbaugh or FOX to apologize and say they didn't really mean it; and if they don't apologize or tuck tail and beg, they are ostracized, labeled as too moderate. No, thanks, I may get annoyed when folks like Ms. Waters "grumble" for no good reason but I'll take her over every House and Senate TPer any day a thousand times over.

As for the media creating a noncontroversy, the media is looking for something else to talk about rather than just those GOPTP presidential wannabees. Awesome statement Steeler.

      The Obama Diary:

President Barack Obama criticized Republican opponents on Sunday as he began a West Coast fundraising tour, accusing them of "ideological pushback" at a time of national crisis.

… "From the moment that I took office, what we've seen is a constant ideological pushback against any kind of sensible reforms that would make our economy work better and give people more opportunity," Obama said at his first stop in Seattle.

Speaking at the home of former Microsoft executive Jon Shirley, Obama said he had hoped "because we were in a crisis, the other side would respond by saying now is the time for all of us to pull together …. That was not the decision they made."

President Obama's speech was truth to wisdom. Most of the Black Caucus recognized the words for the reality. The trouble with too many in Congress and in the media is that President Obama does not cater to a particular group nor does he treat them as the kings or kingmakers they seem to believe they are. While Ms. Waters may be grumbling a bit, it is not just up to President Obama to solve the problems of the black community or any minority. It requires local officials, mayors, city councils, state governments to work together with the federal government and the President, and it requires the citizens of every community to take off their slippers and put on their marching shoes to demand action. One President cannot solve the problems this country faces nor can that President solve the problems of minorities. Sadly, until we have some republicans in Congress who are equally committed to solving America's problems, it will require marching and grassroots efforts by citizens as well.

And nice dodge that it's someones elses problem to solve the "black problem" as you so eloquently state it. It's stories like these that flush the bigots out.

Jooo-dy: One President cannot solve the problems this country faces nor can that President solve the problems of minorities.

Apparently this president can't solve any problems. He did manage to create a few though.

The question is why do you blindly follow an un-qualified, liberal, activist POTUS who is clearly trying to shape America into a european style government. I don't want my taxes paying for anything that does not improve my environment or my standard of living. i am tired of paying for entitlements to those who can't/won't work for it themselves. I am tired of paying the salaries of congressman and legislators and federal employees who do little and are highly compensated on my dime yet do little to improve my economic standing. We need to radically change the tax code and we need to radically go thru our entire budget with a red pen and cross off every freeprogram and entitlement until we get to a balnaced budget. The hit up Soros and his ultra lib buddies to pay for all the socialist programs. They can sleep good at night and i can sleep good knowing my money is paying for my interests.

I prefer to pay for my own villagers that i am responsible for. The rest of the village needs to figure out how to do that also. Stop the complaining and the excuses for why your down on your luck, CHANGE IT. Stop holding out a hand for a freebie. If you can't pay for it then just go away and stop being a blight on my horizon. Unfortunately the republicans only seem to care about one problem of making sure the rich get more tax cuts.

When all the republicans started signing pledges with Norquist to protect the rich while killing America, they quit caring about America. I say we need to start with voting out the pledge signing traitors to America. Only then can our country start moving forward again.

I don't want to pay anymore taxes. Between federal, state, local, sales, property, gas, payroll, and all other taxes, I pay plenty. And I don't care who got what. I think we should have a flat tax - all Americans should contribute the same percentage. When all pay, the base is broadened and the rate can be lowered.

Conservatives are the only ones keeping the freaks and weirdo's at bay. for now. This country would be more easily open to compromise if not for the un-compromising nature of liberals who want what they want now but want others to give up what they hold dear. Tradition is a foul word to liberals. Let's not protect the traditional standard of marriage. Let's get rid of the Christmas tree and the manger scene because some muslim, jew or atheist might be offended. All these things and the continual desecration of tradition is why the conservatives fight so hard against the left. Stop trying to change what has always been just to suit your deviant lifestyles. If conservatives can't have a X-mas tree than gays can't have a real marriage. Liberals just want their wishes granted and demonize anyone who wishes for tradition to remain the same. hypocrites.

We just want to return to old conservative values. Real fiscal conservatives that don't give taxes cuts during war time? Back to the days when shared sacrifice meant more than just the working poor and middle class sacrificing. Back when compromise is how we worked instead of holding the country hostage and republicans never giving an inch on anything.

These tea people, these economic terrorist are hardly conservatives anymore.

Get over it, science which I am sure you don't believe in has found a gay gene. That means gay people are born that way and that God created them that way and what right have we to deny them happiness because of antiquated beliefs of the bible thumpers. I am sure in your mind that your feelings are more important that the people actually living their lives. Gay is not catching and is not going to harm your traditional marriage.

I am a liberal and I have not heard we are against Christmas trees. I always had one every year in my home. We always had one in the office and even a large one downtown. So if someone denied you a Christmas tree you need to blame that person not liberals.

According to Edward Wolff from NYU who is one of the leading experts on the statistics on wealth ownership in America as of Jan 1, 2010

the Top 1% have 36% of all national wealth

The top 10% have 75% of all national wealth

That leaves 25% of all national wealth for the remaining 90%

Do you honestly believe this is the vision of America our founding fathers had?

You are entitled to your opinions but not the facts. Call him a socialist, call him a communist sympathizer but he did not create this imbalance of economic fortunes in America. Who started the class warfare?

Also doesn't the black community get it yet? O'Bama is all about gaining favor with the Hispanics, especially the illegal ones.

This is something that most people may not admit to but, 9 out of ten African Americans voted for Obama.

Under his administration I am now making less as his policies hurt myself and others that I do business with.

Right now I could hire 10 to 12 new employees and I do now want to have anything to do with someone that voted for OBAMA as their ignorance led to this mess of a Presidency.
So you have to realize that most employers may not hire the 9 out of 10 that voted for him.

I guess you may call that your "HOPE AND CHANGE".
