Poll: Romney leads in NH, Huntsman in double digits

BEDFORD, NH -- Mitt Romney continues to lead the GOP presidential field in New Hampshire, according to the latest non-partisan Suffolk University/7News poll published late Wednesday.

Rick Perry, who leads in several national polls, comes in fourth -- behind Ron Paul and Jon Huntsman.

Here's the breakdown:
Romney 41%
Paul 14%
Huntsman 10%
Perry 8%
Palin 6%
Bachmann 5%
Santorum 1%
Roemer 1%
11% were undecided

Romney has centered his campaign strategy on victory in New Hampshire, where he owns a home and has been regularly campaigning since the 2008 cycle.

“Mitt Romney is saying ‘get out of my back yard’ and making New Hampshire his strong firewall despite showing some weakness in the other states’ early primaries,” said David Paleologos, director of Suffolk University’s Political Research Center in a statement.

“The anti-Romney candidate at this point could be either Ron Paul, who has polled consistently over the past year, or Jon Huntsman, whose numbers are really growing in the Granite State,” Paleologos said.

Huntsman's campaign, which has shifted the lion's share of its resources to New Hampshire, is pleased with the results.

"Gov. Huntsman's record of leadership and the strongest jobs plan in the race is resonating with voters. We are going to continue to aggressively campaign in New Hampshire and earn every vote in the months ahead," spokesman Michael Levoff told NBC News.

What a difference a summer makes. This poll of 400 voters drew a dramatic contrast to the last Suffolk/7News survey in June. Three short months ago, Romney sat comfortably at 36% ,while Michele Bachmann clocked in at 11%, Paul garnered 8%, and Huntsman claimed 4%. On Wednesday, Bachmann polled at less than half of her June numbers.

Bachmann has not been back to New Hampshire since before the Ames Straw Poll, a move that has irked her existing supporters and miffed voters in the Granite State.

“The fact that she hasn’t been here since June 28, not even a victory lap after the Straw Poll, speaks volumes of what the campaign thinks of New Hampshire, which is unorthodox to say the least,” former GOP state chairman Fergus Cullen told NBC News.

“Once it becomes the conventional wisdom she is not interested in this state, it becomes very difficult, almost impossible, to turn that around into any appreciable support,” Cullen said. “And [her absence] has become the cemented wisdom.”

Discuss this post

It's encouraging to hear Huntsman has finally hit double digits!

Seems the good people of New Hampshire aren't big fans of irrational!

Perry would look better in a Fla. poll.

Today's debate is sponsored by Ralph Reed.

And, in keeping, Perry is joining hands.

Meet Rick Perry's Radical Leadership Team Co-Chair
Submitted by Brian Tashman on September 21, 2011 - 4:42pm

"Before heading to this week's Presidency 5 conference in Orlando, Rick Perry named two Religious Right leaders to his Florida Presidency 5 campaign leadership team: John Stemberger and Pam Olsen. While Stemberger's anti-choice, anti-gay and anti-Muslim activism is well known, Olsen is a far more obscure figure, but no less extreme. Olsen has said that same-sex marriage will lead to God's judgment, preached Seven Mountains dominionism, and even claims that she, as a prophet, will have the power to raise the dead in the End Times.

Olsen heads the Tallahassee branch of the International House of Prayer, whose members helped organize and preached at Perry's The Response prayer rally in August. The Response emcee Mike Bickle, who once claimed that Oprah is the harbinger of the Antichrist and that gay marriage is "rooted in the depths of hell," is the founder and director of IHOP. As reported by Sarah Posner, Olsen was inspired to found IHOP Tallahassee after extremist self-proclaimed prophet Cindy Jacobs prophesied over her.

In July, Olsen warned that God's increasingly severe judgments will come on the church and America for legalizing same-sex marriage in the form of natural disasters:"

I'm starting to believe that darn Iowa Straw Poll is for SUCKERS. I mean it seems to insure you will LOSE the nomination.

And to think she paid all that money for those votes, too? with only a 2/3 return on her investment.

It almost says, HEY, here's someone who should be in charge of a really large budget. a-l-m-o-s-t, not.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

well, Gay marriage isn't legal in Texas, so where is THAT wrath coming from? Republicans are to logic what Gays are to homophobes. Something neither set will EVER 'get'!

In Ralph Reed's new book, The Confirmation, he writes about a candidate who leaves his party, runs as an independent, and is finally confirmed as POTUS by the House of Representatives.

This seems to tie in with something Palin said on Hanitty recently; that this this election 'will be like none we have ever seen'.

The New Theocracy is setting us up.

Voters, and the media, need to start paying close attention.

Feisty -- It will be interesting to see how long Perry remains the front runner. Jon Huntsman has always said it's a long time yet to election day--double digits in NH.

Richard -- Thanks for the excerpt and link on Scary Perry. Interesting how Teapublicans believe disasters are God's wrath for gay marriage, but science supporting climate change is a hoax. Those scientitsts who struggle to get $25,000 in NSF grants instead of working for Big Oil are obviously a bunch of greedy liars. And clearly the evidence of God's severe judgement is a better explanation for things like hurricanes, floods, drought, wildfires, etc.

Also information about The Confirmation. Just looking at most recent shinanigans in which Republicans are trying to change electoral college rules in Pennsylvania and Nebraska (in opposite directions) to benefit a Republican presidential candidate, it's not too hard to imagine more extreme machinations. As I've said, they fear Muslims using such tactics to impose Sharia Law--because they are projecting themselves. But if it's imposing Christianity in these ways, then it's okay, don't ya know?

TruePatriot - Sharia Law could never be more evangelically American.

David Barton preaches the end of separation of church and state, and preaches the 'Seven Mountains of Dominionism' theology.

Mike Huckabee agrees:

"David Barton introduced Mike Huckabee at the Rediscover God In America conference, praising him as the epitome of the "Black Robe Regiment" mentality of seeking to apply the Bible to every aspect of the culture. Huckabee, in turn, repaid the compliments to Barton, calling him one of the most effective communicators in America and wishing that every American would be forced, at gunpoint, to listen to every Barton broadcast:"

June FL,

Nice job and thanks for pointing the double standard GOP. They are grabbing at anything since it looks like Solyndra will backfire in their "green with envy" faces. As long as President Obama is out talking to the people he will be reelected. Every single Republicans appears as an idiot savant next to our President. Except for maybe Huntsman. But since he is anti choice, I would not vote for Huntsman. Also in regards to Utah. Has anyone noticed the signs as you pass by all the suburbs heading into Salt Lake City Utah? I did in September of 2009. Their water is monitored for poisons constantly because of leaching and mining and they have to post warning sings all over. Is that the America you want by electing the likes of Perry or Romney or Huntsman?

Bev,

Thanks for the links. I really do admire the President and First Lady. I saw a "raw news" video of Michelle surprising WH visitors once, with BO at her feet, and she was so warm, natural and real, I felt proud to have voted for her husband. It makes me angry when Republicans talk as if their "values" are superior or more "American" than the Presidents' family's, when the Obamas themselves embody the American dream.

Feisty, like other liberals, only pretend to admire Jon Huntsman.

The moonbat herd will quickly fall out of love with Huntsman if he actually becomes a threat to win.

They will immediately notice he was a pro-life, pro-free enterprise conservative Governor of Utah.

If Huntsman rises in the polls, the talking point is already cooked and ready:

Republicans, Mark Rubio, just last night conducting ROBO calls 30 minutes before holding a Telephone Town Hall, they are afraid to Face The American People with all the Obstruction, Government Shutdowns, Proposals to Kill Medicare, Social Security that Ponzi Scheme, Refuse to Provide FEMA Benefits when our homes are destroyed during Hurricanes, Tornados, Wild Fires, etc. They are all running on Greed & Hate For the President.

All this conversation about these Debates by Republicans, who present absolutely no solutions other than Protecting the Rich, giving them our Tax Dollars, protecting the Rich giving them our Tax Dollars, protecting Corporations giving them our Tax Dollars, not one JOBS bill and they have the Majority in the House since Nov. 2010 run to every camera asking Us, the American People "Where are the Jobs?" And they are still asking us and the President

Folk these Republicans along with other in Congress make $176,000 A Year minimum. Yet they are cutting pensions and salaries of Fire Fighters who earn $40,000-$50,000, Teachers who earn $25,000-$35,000, Police Officers whos earnings are significantly less than the Republicans in congress who are sitting around doing Absolutely Nothing but Obstruction, Holding the Country Hostage while as Fisety said

25 Million Families have no idea where their next meal is coming from, their kids, many are going hungry, jobless, homeless and the Republicans want these families to go 14 Months while they wage War against the Country and the President, because that's what it is War on the Country.

Best Recommendation, as the old folk say what's good for the goose is good for the gander, therefore, I propose the following

Republicans must immediately voluntarily "CUT Their Salaries of $176,000+ to that of those Americans that they are waging war on their salaries, benefits and workers rghts. Republicans must immediately Reduce their $176,000 Salaries to that of the Average Fire Fighter, Teacher or Policeman. Either way we will be looking at significant reductions in their Pay checks a minimum of 75% Reduction just to get their salaries in line with 'Working American Families"

Next Cut their Perks, No Bonuses, Cut Their Staffs and eliminate their Bonuses, Democrats included although they are not running to the Cameras Slashing Working Americans Pensions, Salaries, Benefits and Workers rights. To have an effective government we need folk who know what it means to be a Working American without the perks as other American.

    Elizabeth Warren said it best

“I hear all this, you know, ‘Well, this is class warfare, this is whatever,’” Warren said. “No.There is Nobody in this Country who got rich on his own — Nobody.

“You built a factory out there? Good for you. But I want to be clear. You moved your goods
to market on the roads the rest of us Paid for.

You hired workers the rest of us Paid to Educate.

You were safe in your factory because of police-forces and fire-forces that the rest of us Paid for.

You didn’t have to worry that marauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory —
and hire someone to protect against this — because of the Work the rest of us did.

“Now look, you built a factory and it turned into something terrific, or a great idea. God
bless — keep a big hunk of it.

Finally a person in the Government who actually understands that Rich People and Corporations wouldn't be Rich without the Rest of Us

Speaker Boehner we are wating for your Response since you seem to think that Rich People and Big Corporations are "Job Creators"

Jobs are created based on Consumer Demand but Speaker Boehner and the Republican Party Keep Ignoring the Truth.

But part of the underlying social
contract is, you take a hunk of that and pay forward for the next kid
    who comes along.”

Actually I don't care about the Polls what I do care about is the American families those 25 Million families out of work most Jobless homeless, kids don't know where the next meal is coming from as Feisty pointed out except the one they had at school. We need all Americans to care about those families period.

Attempting to hold this economy Hostage to take over the White House rather than playing politics as gamesship vs. hostile taking of a country is too extreme for me.

Any party who does not put the American people first, seeks to and does cut the salaries of Ordinary Working Americans, their pensions, etc while making $176,000 A Year complements of the American People while they Hold the Country Hostage, that's what I have a problem with.

Spanky let's Demand that the Entire Congress take a Cut in their Pay Checks. Less immediately Petition to Demand Everyone in Congress in the House and Senate Immediately Reduce their $176,000 A Year Salaries to that of those Fire Fighters, School Teachers and Firemen/women who's $25,000-50,000 Salaries all the Republican Governors cut.

Surely you can agree with me on that.

Since they Congress is not working and the Republicans are Obstructing unless the can Tax Working Folk, the Poor, Disabled, Elderly and they are making so much more money than the folks they are trying to take from let's agree on that!

June, wonderful post couldn't agree more but will add one observation. All of these things our President is trying to accomplish domestically and internationally are being under mined by Republicans who are aided and abetted by those in the media. Just listening to these so called journalists constantly criticize, stoke the pot of uncertainty is not helping. These individuals are not being objective, they work for CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC and MSNBC (looking at you Chuck Todd and Andrea Mitchell) just today, trying to stir things up over Israel and the President's visit to Cincinnati, because it upsets the delicate sensibilities of the republican leaders who should be doing something for their states to fix the da*n bridge.

Yes it is politics, and he is running for reelection, what do you expect, that he sit on his hands and in the White House, of course he wont, and neither would they if they were in his shoes.

    June, GBM - good points.

We can also consider one more: The effect that supporting a U.S. recovery rather than stagnation or return to recession will have on not merely America but the world.

Some economists are saying they greatly fear a return to recession, at least abroad, as happened in 1936-37. That gloomy observation was further followed by statements that if it should happen, then the consequences could take several more years to get over.

Conversely, if Congress passes the American Jobs Act, the sustained stimulation of growth and employment will reverberate abroad, too. This is literally a national security issue.

    Pass the jobs bill NOW!

Another great post June Fl -- Good to see you here. I'll add the Poor Little Rich "Class Warfare" Victim Louisiana Congressman John Fleming who has only $400,000 left over after overhead and feeding his family.

Gingerbread Mamma -- We remember the massive media failure that help to enable the invasion of Iraq. I'll add John King to your list. Just softball questions and/or lack of follow-up questions to crazy responses by these Teapublicans is bad enough. Don't forget that Andrea Mitchell is married to Alan Greenspan.

The addition of many excellent news programs on MSNBC, and others like Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert since that time have been a welcome sight. But when you have the entire right-wing base tuning in exclusively to FAUX Noise 24/7, as the ratings prove, even if other media did a more balanced job, or even a biased but factual job, how will these low-information voters be reached? But I agree there seems to be favoritism shown to Teapublicans to the point of Twitter-type reports.

june - no doubt about it recessions suck, and slow recoveries from them suck even more.

One would have thought that by now an economist or politician would have developed and effective plan to avoid recessions or even have a working plan for recovery.

An old university professor had a favorite expression of saying "by gosh and by golly the answer appears" when we couldn't prove why the answer was what it was.

Seems that his expression also applies to recessions and recoveries as well. Each recession does seem to have its own flavor and its own time of recovery.
