The specter of Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s attempted HPV vaccine mandate looms particularly large in South Carolina, where the state’s current governor, Nikki Haley, co-sponsored a similar bill as a state representative in 2007.
According to a CNN story earlier this week, Haley later voted against the bill after fierce opposition arose. She did not, however, request to be removed as a sponsor of the bill.
According to a statement on Haley’s website, she voted against the bill when “it became clear to me that an opt-out provision was not going to be included in the bill and it sought to mandate that middle-school girls obtain a vaccine – and strip parents of the right to make the choice for their daughter."
Two opt-out amendments were in fact later added to the bill, but Haley voted to table both of them according to legislative records.
When asked about Haley’s position on the bill yesterday, South Carolina Rep. Tim Scott declined to comment but said he opposed the concept of a vaccine mandate.
“I think the very most important thing to do on that question is ask Nikki Haley. Because I’m not going to be a spokesperson for Nikki Haley,” Scott said. “I can tell you however that giving parents the options to take care of their family and their children is the most important decision the government can make, which is to stay out of the way.”
A spokesman for Haley told NBC that the governor's statement speaks for itself.
Former Sen. Rick Santorum, campaigning in South Carolina yesterday, said he believed that Haley had good intentions when she first supported the bill.
“I think what Nikki would tell you, and I’m sure she will tell you herself, a lot of people looked at that initially, you see this is an anti-cancer drug and this is a very could be a very helpful thing to eliminate that.”
Santorum said he took issue, however, with the idea of “taking parents’ rights away for having their children be vaccinated for something without really full consent and knowledge.”

Super!
Another Puff Piece!
Citizens are marching on Wall Street...
Tepublincan's were all over the air waves this morning peddling tax increases for the middle class...
John Boehner is facing a challenge for his seat from a 26 year old tea bagger...
And this is the best topic of discussion MSNBC could come up with?
No crap.
Good thing this wasn't a topic for the Polio vaccine unless you built iron lungs for a living.
Feisty -- Agreed. The Republican primary is just another misery we must all suffer through, as if eight years of Bush/Cheney and their ongoing "trickle-down" voodoo economics hasn't been enough.
Mo -- Agreed. Bush/Cheney could pass the Patriot Act, conduct warrant-less wiretaps, and the TSA can pat down granny at the airport. Now The Teapublicans can try to pass mandates like requiring women to get ultra sounds, or folks getting government assistance required to get drug tests, and privatizing Medicare or the draconian balanced budget amendment, and then act like vaccinations for measles or the mumps are taking away liberties.
The only reason the religious-right have their undies in a bundle about the HPV vaccine is because it's sexually transmitted. Where have they stood on AIDS prevention? Heck, where have they stood in regard to other mandated vaccinations such as polio years ago? These people are schizophrenic hypocrites who only care about life before birth, not afterward. At the minimum their anti-science slip is showing.
If you want to return to the Dark Ages and the bubonic plague, vote for Teapublicans.
As we witnessed with the the cheering & applauding at the last 2 debates when it came to killing people!
Richard, we both posted about Polio. American memory is too short. I remember a crippled teacher in grade school who had Polio as a child. Thankfully he was the last person I knew who suffered from that disease.
I remember taking the sugar pill in 1961.
It left me with a sense of freedom, compared to the fear I felt when seeing photos of rows of iron lung patients in hospitals.
The HPV vaccine can save a lot of lives, just like the polio vaccine did.
Unfortunately, it involves reproductive organs, so some want to make it the subject of sex, instead of a life saving health issue.
That's Rick for you, though - Sex is what it's all about.
How shocking that FR chooses to ignore the Chicago Sun Op. Ed.
I wonder is the Dallas Star had a similar Op ed, if it too would be ignored?
Ali? Dominico?
Does being such an obvious shill ever get tiresome?
I get it, a paycheck trumps all. Paychecks are super important. Too bad Obama care little [or is it just knows little] about such things?
[How shocking that FR chooses to ignore the Chicago Sun Op. Ed.]
Having trouble staying focused, "counselor"?
Since Ira lapin appears to have left the building, let us revisit what he found out about the lost revenues to our economy the bush tax cuts created over ten years. Not only did I confirm his conclusions based on the link he provided but I also did a search for more verifying evidence from a variety of sources. btw - I searched the internet with the question asking what the costs of the bush tax cuts were.
His remarks were oriented towards the fact that over a 10 year period, letting all of the bush tax cuts expire would increase revenue by over $3 trillion dollars. During the 4th qtr of 2010 FR libs were clammering that the tax cuts on the top 2% should be eliminated so as to generate an additional $800 billion in revenue over 10 years.
Folks that means that eliminating the tax cuts of the 98% will add over $2.2 trillion in revenue over 10 years to our economy. No wonder the tea party is suggesting that the middle class (the 98%ers) also see that their tax cuts are also eliminated.
No wonder fiesty is so upset, her tax bill will increase as well. It is not in a progressives liberal ideology to personally partake in any sacrifices that they want others to take. Just doesn't fit in with "shared sacrifice".
What is it with the tea people GOP republicans they think they can push stupid policies through and no one will notice. They rail against mandated policies and turn right around and pass mandated policies. Does the country as a whole really not see how hypocritical these tea people GOP republicans are? Wake up America before it's to late.
"Too late" can't be over emphasized, if someone like Scott is being quoted.
This won't be tomorrow's next story, but it helps reveal how passively idiomatic some have become.
Yo Mo - "stupid policies" like tax cuts for the rich.
Oh, wait that was Obama.
I wonder though Mo - do you think the dems rail against mandated policies as well? Richard - ditto with the "idiomatic" [whatever that is]? Dems, no way, right? Sure.
Yeah, likely not, right?
Oh, wait... No it wasn't! That is just another RNC spin talking point. It truly WAS W. Bush who did that, I remember now. It reversed President Clinton's economic policies which had balanced the budget. That is right. WHEW! Spanky, you almost had me convinced there for a minute. See - keep up the rhetorical spin and half truths and someone may begin to believe you.
I am also begining to believe what I've read on here about your mediocracy.... (works both ways, doesn't it.)
See stupid Bush's law expired, by operation of law. Now you have no idea what that means, so look it up. Obama had to write and sign a whole new law.
Law, it complicated, and why folks like you need to stay away.
But sure let's talk about my mediocracy. So how shall we measure? I have a couple of ideas. Me. i like height, length, or bank account.
You?
Now that's is just stupid. :) Hey, seriously, just messin' and happy Sunday. The Captain says Hi.
Oh, hey spank...
"Fun and games, man, fun and games..."
(Quoting David Ferry in the movie JFK)
But, seriously... can you explain why law is complicated?? What is the [true] story?
Oh, and incidently: it really wasn't a "whole new law" but basically just an extension of existing statute. Check it out.
Oh no you are wrong. Whole new law.
Please just do me a solid and google "expired by operation of law." It has a real meaning.
See Bush was gone for 2 long years [yeah! right?]. He didn't sign the NEW law. O did.
This is when you say, "But, but, he had to or no unemployment....."
Why be the Prez, if you can be extorted? Either you are or you are not the most powerful person in the world.
Good question, expecially when W. himself recognized, "I don't have to explain. See that is the interesting thing about being President..."
But it was not a "whole new law" technically, but an extension of the old law. I understand your statement; but your statement is not entirely accurate and IS misleading. But that is what politics is, isn't it - not what you say, but how you say it...
Allow me to interject-
Forget Bush, Perry, Stevenson or Eisenhower. . .
Pretend with me, for a moment, that this was a vaccine against testicular cancer- that occurred as a result of a sexually transmitted disease.
Thunk there would be a controversy?
I don't.
Look, idiots, your little girl could be as pure as the driven snow on her wedding night- doesn't mean her HUSBAND is- or will remain.
The FACT ia that there exists a vaccine against a type of cancer. The best effectiveness of that vaccine is BEFORE sexual activity. Unless you are a dim as Bachman, you should be FOR giving that vaccine.
When my son was born, I told my pediatrician that, if there was a vaccine for stubbed toes, I wanted him to have it. He got the Hepatitis B vaccine when it was first available,- and I did not expect him to be using drugs, or sleeping with girls who did use drugs.
If there I'd a vaccine available against a dread disease, why would anyone not get it?
Maybe my thinking is colored by my own experience- in 1987, I had a nephrectomy. I bled out, and had a 16 unit blood transfusion. That's right- they had to replace my blood supply TWICE, in 12 hours.
Later, I had to get tested for HIV. Then, Hepatitis C. Seems the blood supply was not quite as safe as they had thought.
I tested negative for both- but, trust me, folks, if there were a vaccine for HIV, or Hep C, or anything else, I'd get it, make sure my children got it, and for goodness sake, make sure my princess got it.
And I'd feel the same way if Obama were proposing it.
These anti vaccine people are pure nuts- and they threaten the rest of us with their nonsense.
Say hello to a pure nut. My son hasn't had any vaccinations.
Some vaccines are unnecessary. Giving an infant the Hep B vaccine is illogical. The risk factors for Hep B include: IV drug users and prostitutes. My 2-day old son was neither, so I opted out.
The old vaccines contained thimerisol, a mercury derivative. It is estimated that if all vaccines are given to a kid as scheduled then they will have been exposed to 46 times the recommended amount of Hg as indicated by the USEPA. This was revealed by Dr. Stephanie Cave in Louisiana, who did not advocate giving kids all vaccinations, certainly not at the same time. Our old pediatrician did not either.
It is theorized that some cases of juvenile diabetes, Crohn's disease, asthma, arthritis and some of the other auto-immune diseases may be caused by childhood vaccinations. Autism has been linked to childhood vaccinations as well.
Polio had 2 recorded cases in the U.S. the year of my son's birth. It's vaccination for an extinct disease was unnecessary.
I'll get a lot of static from a lot of people, but 13 states allow you to opt out of vaccinations as Japan does for school-aged kids.
My son is in the 5th grade now. He last missed a day of school in 2nd grade as his immune system is far more powerful than most kids. He is immersed in the same microbe-infested soup as the other kids, but he doesn't come down with the stuff.
We will get him vaccinated if we ever travel abroad to impacted countries, but for now I like him as he is: happy, strong and healthy.
You do any reading of scientific fact? Thimerisol is NOT the cause of autism, or anything else the scientifically uneducated have linked to it. It was a gambit put forth by money grubbing plaintiff's attorneys- who dropped it when they discovered that there was no pot of gold there.
No one is telling you to give a two day old infant ANY vaccines. My son got Hep B when he was 17- on his way to college.
You don't want your child to get vaccines that protect him? Fine- explain it to him when he gets older.
Unfortunately, not vaccinating your child for mumps, measles, rubella, whooping cough, polio- to name just a few- puts MY princess at risk.
So, keep your kid locked indoors, okay? She has enough health problems.
The flat earth society is a danger to all of us.
Indeed, you're endangering other kids- arsehat.
Don't be a douche.
edit: looks like Cali is denying public school admission to kids without pertussis (whooping cough) vaccinations. good start for eradication.
It all depends on what kind of reading you do. Mainstream health literature will not tell you about these causal links. Too heavily funded by the pharmaceuticals.
All I know is my kid is healthier than yours. You can't get around it NoJo.
Like I said. May be some vaccinations down the line, but for now he's doing fine.
BTW: about the meningitis vaccine they give in college. Anyone ever tell you it is effective for only 72 hours? The vaccine they administer in France lasts a lot longer,....arsehat.
Diseases were on the decline BEFORE vaccines came on the scene, a benefit of improved sanitation: better water treatment, enclosed sewers.
And why DO vaccinated kids contract the diseases anyway as my wife did with measles in 1993?
Good questions, but "No Answers" I mean, NoJo can't understand this stuff.
Maybe you'll put aside your paranoia just long enough to consider that perhaps the "mainstream literature" doesn't tell you about those links because they don't exist? However, I doubt that any data that will change your mind since you'll consider anything that challenges your way of thinking to be a product of "the system."
Yup.
Including you.
lol, First Read.
I'm sure this'll be the top story across the nation in the morning.
But it won't divert anyone from the record of the Obama Administration.
Even the Feisty Redhead is annoyed.
Windmills MB, windmills.
Super fun and always entertaining, but windmills not the less.
You think Fiesty is a Sun Times subscriber?
Super fun happy times in Chicago no doubt today.
List all the things that have changed since the Bush era such as tax cuts, wars, Medicare unable to negotiate prescription drug costs, safety (BP oil spill, mines, etc.). The Obama Administration's record is what? A little regulation of health insurance, maybe some consumer protection in Dodd-Frank, a small stimulus--most of which went to tax cuts for the middle class and helping states--but nonetheless the consensus is it prevented an outright depression.
If people are unhappy with the Obama Administration record, it's because it just more of the same, old, failed Bush policies. You can say "record" all you want, but without backing that up with factual specifics, no one cares.
Ah, so TP now hates Obama cause he's just Bush Lite. Interesting.
Me, I thought he was gonna make it all better. Seems like we borrowed an ass load of ash, but things getting worse.
Stimulus bad, Solyndra worse, Gunrunner worse-er.
Oj and Stimulus 2, cause the first one sucked. Yeah.
I thought it was silly before, but now I think there is a good chance dude just quits. Presidentin' is hard.
And the really sad fact is that it is STILL 1000% better than we had with Bush.
Yeah, 'cept as much as you all hate me, I'm not the Op. Ed. writer forFeisty's own Sun Times.
So Stupid, why would the Sun Times bash so hard on their own like that?
Chicago way?
I truly don't know, but I'll wager it has something to do with a dollar. What is your opinion?
Between the two of us, we could probably figure it out accurately, but that is not the thing I want to do on a
Sunday evening.
Kind of like Col. Slade stated in the movie Scent of a Woman: "I'm too old... too tired... too fooking blind..."
LOL. Have a good one Spanky.
spanky - you make it sound as if obamas only option will be to do an LBJ...
President Lyndon B. Johnson - March 31, 1968
iNTERESTINGLY ENOUGH LBJ also said the following during this address that really started out as an address to the nation on the veitnam war. Some rather interesting parallels to todays washington atmosphere.
While not politically motivated at the time (to young) it appears that there was more to LBJ than just being a texan and promoting a failed war on poverty and giving us civil rights and medicare. the full speech is here....http://www.historyplace.com/speeches/lbj-decision.htm
Apparently, Mixed Bag believes that there can be only one news story a day. I guess he has ADD.
The biggest problem I is the jokers on the right such as noted by John Stevens is they view the governing of our country as a game to be won, without realizing we all lose. This individual also fails to acknowledge that the 1000 jobs in SC would come at the cost of the same number in the north west, but that OK. As I believe Rachael started the right lives in Republicianville where facts and the truth very rarely if ever venture.
Jack Sprucinski,
How would it cost jobs in the north west?
The conservative position: If I want my daughter to get cancer, then that's my god-given right as a parent!
I don't think they understand the purpose of vaccines. Vaccination on an individual basis is not the point. The point is to build up sufficient herd immunity to eliminate the threat of the disease to anyone.
Why are we allowing the health of our communities to be compromised by bronze age superstition?
Well, Nathan, I'm a fiscal conservative who just voted for you. Here in NJ, Hep B vaccine is mandated now. When my son got it, it was not- but my pediatrician would not sign the forms necessary for college admissions were it not administered.
Did not matter to me. I did not expect my son to use injectable, or any other, drugs, nor to sleep with the kind of girls who did- but, who can predict a car accident, and a blood transfusion?
For crying out loud, people this vaccine can prevent CANCER! Get it?
The vaccine is great.
The hypocrisy is not. Texas is an Abstinence Only Sex Ed state (we take more Fed funds, yes FED funds, for it than any other state). In Texas' curriculum, STD's & their prevention- including the vaccine, aren't properly mentioned. The only mention is something like "barrier protection is not a reliable way to prevent STD's" (paraphrased). No mention of a condom, or even symptoms of STD's.
In Texas a girl under 18 may not discuss her reproductive health without her parents approval. Even a 17yr old living on UT's campus can't discuss reproductive health at the clinic. Even a 17yr that already has a kid can't discuss reproductive health with her ob/gyn.
For all of those Fed dollars, you've purchased a program that makes Texas one of the top 5 in teen pregnancy (varies by year, our highest has been 2nd), and usually top 2 in REPEAT teen pregnancies.
When confronted with these facts & figures Perry's response was "I know in my heart that Abst. Only Sex ed works"..... doh.
We also just defunded Planned Parenthood within the last cple of days. The best source of low-cost healthcare for women.
So, when Mercks $$, and a favor to his friend, is on the table- Perry's ALL FOR measures to prevent STD's. Otherwise, he's flat out against it. He knows in his heart it's right.
I'm all for mandating the vaccine. I'd like to see it accompanied by a sex ed curriculum that had a chance of preventing some teen pregnancy and the recent rise of treatment resistant STD's. The vaccine only protects against HPV. It's just one of many dangers.
Please get one thing perfectly straight. Republijerks DO NOT give a a damn about the unborn. Their rabid interest in anti-abortion goes all the way back to some old lady spitting and snarling over a pregnant teenager. Don't you remember? SHE MADE HER BED NOW SHE CAN JUST LIE IN IT. There is nothing kind, gracious or thoughtful about the conservajerks. They are vicious, me first, greedy miscreants who are committing treason and sedition.
They are even working on a new National Anthem. They have the first lines completed. I LOVE ME, I LO..VE ME. (They pat themselves on the back as they sing)
Nuff said.
Somebody want to explAin why John Stephens keeps getting deleted? I've read his posts- there is no reason for the deletion.
Maybe you treehouse kids have just too much power.
no joe, no bo,nj @#15==Check posts #17 through #21 for your answer. Just too much hate in John's posting.
tic, toc,
goes his clock.
Feisty has been warning him, not to keep on posting the same thing, over and over again.
Actually, I am surprise Feisty didn't have him banned. Tic, Toc.
John, You must be on some mind altering drugs. Maybe your frontal lobe hasn't developed yet. Republicans must learn that just because you say something, doesn't make it true.
AMEN Sis...
and they should learn that we are NOT going to quietly accept their double standards any more either, but chances are they are too dense to learn these things on their own and will obstinately continue the ceasless, illogical, un-true rhetoric that is their political platform. So... guess we will simply have to SHOW them 11/12!
Whatever happened to the proud "American taxpayer". There was a time when we were proud to say I'm a taxpayer and I have the right to....(you fill in the blank). Now people are saying that I am American and I will not pay any taxes. Tax loopholes should be eliminated for wealthy individuals and corporations. Tax credits and exemptions should be given to new small businesses that employ less than 20 people; for three years. State applications, licenses and permits for these businesses should be subsidized by the states. And yes I think if you can afford to buy a home that is more valuable than the one you are selling then you should pay the cost, but I also think state property taxes are unfair. What are state property taxes for anyway? Where does that money go? What about state gasoline taxes, where does it all go? Surely not for education and healthcare, police and firefighters. All taxes should be reformed both state and federal, so that it all makes sense, and why are there not any tea party politicians in local government where they can make the most difference.
