Latest Texas jobs figures shows net jobs loss, unemployment highest in 24 years

Texas Gov. Rick Perry's efforts to tout his record on jobs and the economy as a centerpiece of his presidential campagn took a hit today with new figures from one of his own state agencies: They show the Texas unemployment rate increased to 8.5% in August -- the highest level in more than 24 years and more than twice the rate when Perry took office in December 2000.

The new unemployment rate for Texas is still below the national average of 9.1%. But the new figures from the Texas Workforce Commission included some disturbing trends: There was a net jobs loss of 1,300 in Texas during the month of August, even worse than than the latest national figures showing zero job growth.

While the private sector did add 8,100 jobs in Texas during August, this was more than offset by a shrinking public sector resulting in the loss of 9,400 government jobs, state figures show.

State officials blamed national economic trends. "Texas continues to feel the pressures of a stagnant national economy," said Texas Workforce Commmission chairman Tom Pauken.

But the figures also show some key sectors of the Texas economy losing strength during the month: Trade and transportation, mining, information, and leisure all experienced  job losses. Mark Lavergne, a spokesman for the commission, confirmed that the new unemployment rate of 8.5% -- up slightly from 8.4% the previous month -- is the highest unemployment rate for Texas since July, 1987. When Perry took office in December 2000 after George W. Bush resigned, the unemployment rate in Texas was 4.2%

At this week's GOP presidential rate, Perry touted his record of "creating more than one million jobs" in Texas, but made no mention of the recent downward trends in the state's economy. A spokesman for his campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the latest figures.

*** UPDATE *** Perry's campaign this afternoon responded:

"Texas is not immune to the effects of the national recession," said Ray Sullivan, Perry's chief spokesman. "Yet Texas continues to outperform the rest of the country and is still home to roughly 40% of the net new jobs created nationwide since June 2009."

He continued: "And even during this national economic downturn, which the president's misguided policies have only worsened, Texas remains the nation's top economy, attracting jobs and growing by more than 1,000 people a day. As president, Gov. Perry will get our nation's fiscal house in order, free employers from the onerous tax and regulatory burdens undermining our economy, and restore confidence in private sector job creators across this nation so we can get America working again."

Forrest Grump I guess breaks away from the liberal support of homosexuals after knocking a few back at 3 in the morning I guess its ok for liberal nut jobs to make passive aggressive anti gay statements....?

As always, true hidden prejudices of liberals eventually come out....

I mean the mass liberal bias against Christianity is offered up on these threads in the light of day with pride, but usually gay bashing is harder to see...

Save us the phony outrage, Gregor. You don't get to claim Christianity as the sole province of Conservatism. Liberal Christians were at the forefront of the anti-slavery movement, the Civil Rights movement, the fight against poverty, the fight for workers rights...in short nearly every true advancement in society for the entire history of this nation.

I have no problem with homosexuals. What I do have a problem with is the endless procession of Conservative politicians who base their entire careers on "family values", then are caught with prostitutes, mistresses, or other partners, often of the same sex. Hypocrisy, thy name is Conservative.

John I'm not claiming Christianity....I'm not religious and I don't even go to Church so hold off on the assumptions...I am pointing out that these threads are overflowing with anti-Christian bias just go back and read some of these posts - what is this all about? Why these attacks?

From the liberals who claim the high and mighty position that Conservatives are prejudiced, racist, anti this and that....I find it incredibly hypocritical to see the overt hate filled posts on this thread...and then somehow its even ok to attack gays when your a liberal trying to denigrate Perry?

And as far as politicians getting "caught" don't even go there I live in a state where a recent Dem Governor resigned because he was having an extra marital gay affair with a staffer boyfriend he gave a Homeland Security job to just to keep him around, next door to a state with a recent Dem Governor who was kicked out of office for extra marital affairs with prostitutes and a recent married Congressman who was texting pics of his rod to young girls

No more Rick Perry.... in any house. We want Rick Perry out of the Governor's mansion, out of the White House, and out of the closet

Rick Perry has nothing to do with the successes of Texas, and everything to do with whats wrong in Texas. He made promises of protecting the Texas/Mexico border when he ran in that last 2 elections and supported a wall, but once he was re-elected he completely forgot about it. Like alot of our rivers, and lakes in Texas, I wish Rick Perry would just disappear.

How is it that Texas is LOSING jobs when the nation as a whole is at least holding even? That would be proof positive Conservatives aren't leading the economy, they're holding it back.

Bush and the republicans had destroyed our country with wars and tax cuts. Never in the history had our nation given tax cuts in war time. It was always common wisdom that you raised taxes in war time.

Apparently the republicans common sense went out the window with yours.

    Raising oil prices

    large government growth

    Heavy military spending

    Stable housing

    Young consumer oriented population

    high tech industries

    Republican controlled Congress

All that and they are still losing jobs. And when the stimulus money that he used to create so many jobs (the money he said he didn't want) runs out it will get worse. They will be going higher than 9.1 soon.

Name one of those policies Gregor, what policy or tax rate has been substantially changed, Obama did not pass any earth shattering legislation, and what has Congress done besides name a few buildings. Don't tell me you just buy into the silly notion that because Obama is the president he puts a bad mood on business, and as soon as he is gone business will be in a great mood and the economy will magically improve, because guys like you will be in a better mood. Please tell me that you and republican lawmakers have more than that, and tax cuts, and eliminating regulations. Please tell me you got a better answer than the businessmen are just in a bad mood because Obama is the president and that is why they are not hiring.

for starters, how about pissing away nearly a trillion dollars in a failed stimulus package all the while ignoring plea's from the other party to consider different alternatives? how about shoving O'bamacare down our throats when the entire nation was crying out for jobs?

nothing like the added worry of hundreds of billions of added costs for businesses to go run out and hire during a depression (O'bama's own words during the campaign)....

throw in some partisan bullying (wasn't he going to unite us?) when he had complete control of the congress, endless class warfare and anti business rhetoric throw in plenty of bureaucratic regulation, stir for 3 years and there you go....Obamanomics....9.1% unemployment, record # of Americans on Food Stamps, a 52 year high # of Americans living in poverty, a 3 year old housing disaster (and counting), out of control spending and deficits, the 1st ever credit downgrade in our history, $4 per gallon gas etc etc

congratulations, you got just what you voted for?

So when he is gone gas prices will drop, the unemployed will find jobs, we will not have to raise the debt ceiling for the 77th time, people will not need food stamps, or health-care, everything automatically will get better. How? why? Just because. Like I said you need a plan and wishful thinking is not a plan. Whats the plan Gregor, let me guess, cut taxes for the wealthy, and cut regulations, that must be your plan because that is how Sean Hanity finishes his little spiel that you have repeated verbatim. You need a plan Gregor, not wishful thinking, open the closet door look inside, look under the bed, there is no bogeyman, these problems are real and your wishful thinking will not solve them.

"ignoring plea's from the other party to consider different alternatives"

Like more corporate tax breaks that have failed to create jobs for the past 8 years?

"entire nation was crying out for jobs?"

Unlike the right, most of the nation can have more than 1 thought at a time. Many in this country wanted affordable health care along with jobs. Had it not become a political football played for partisan politics on the right there would have been more time to work on jobs. Many of the policies in the health care law were Republican ideas before they weren't.

"added costs for businesses to go run out and hire"

From www.savingtoinvest.com "[Update Sep 2010] Following on from President Obama’s plans to help small business, Congress and the President have approved the Small Business Jobs Bill ( H.R. 5297) to cut taxes, provide more SBA funding and ease credit for small businesses (details below). The legislation would create a $30 billion lending program and provide small businesses with $12 billion in tax breaks, including more generous write-offs for equipment purchases."

From ABC News, Jan 29, 2010"President Obama announced today a proposal to establish a $33 billion tax credit to encourage small businesses to hire more workers and increase wages."

    Pretty draconian regulations

"throw in some partisan bullying" Really?

    "anti business"

See above. Also- "American businesses earned profits at an annual rate of $1.659 trillion in the third quarter, according to a Commerce Department report released Tuesday. That is the highest figure recorded since the government began keeping track over 60 years ago, at least in nominal or noninflation-adjusted terms. "Corporate profits have been doing extremely well for a while. Since their cyclical low in the fourth quarter of 2008, profits have grown for seven consecutive quarters, at some of the fastest rates in history." From the New York Times Nov. 2010

    "9.1% unemployment,"

This rate has been holding for the past 1 1/2 years. During the last year of the previous administerting the rate was dropping jobs at a rate of up to 700,000 a month. Which is better?

"1st ever credit downgrade in our history"

    Per Standard and Poors website-

"The political brinksmanship of recent months highlights what we see as America's governance and policymaking becoming less stable, less effective, and less predictable than what we previously believed. The statutory debt ceiling and the threat of default have become political bargaining chips in the debate over fiscal policy."

"the threat of default" It was Republicans who repeatedly said they would rather see default than agree with the president. ( my comment)

    Again from S&P-

"Standard & Poor's takes no position on the mix of spending and revenue measures that Congress and the Administration might conclude is appropriate for putting the U.S.'s finances on a sustainable footing."

    "$4 per gallon gas"

I guess President Obama could just nationalize the oil companies and set any price he wants. Otherwise this is an example of letting the free market determine what it wants to charge for products and services.

No. That would be an ineffectual governor who only loses jobs (most in the U.S. in July). But if he becomes President you can lay all the blame you wish at his feet.

Question: are you doing that with Obama?

You won't even let us blame bush and the republicans for what they did and are still doing to our country right now. I have read post here that blame President Obama for things that happened while bush was still in office.

But if Perry becomes president he will gladly blame President Obama from day 1. You know it and I know it. Every report that came out about the credit downgrade put it at the tea parties feet. I'll bet right now you blame President Obama.

Republicans never take responsibility for anything. If they did, they would be raising taxes on the rich and asking our forgiveness for putting our country in such debt.

Obama could have simply not extended the Bush era tax rates if he thought it as devastating to our nation as you seem to. That was in his power. Are you saying he's not a leader? Careful....they'll kick you out of the Big O fan club. Maybe report you to attackwatch.com.
