Latest Texas jobs figures shows net jobs loss, unemployment highest in 24 years

Texas Gov. Rick Perry's efforts to tout his record on jobs and the economy as a centerpiece of his presidential campagn took a hit today with new figures from one of his own state agencies: They show the Texas unemployment rate increased to 8.5% in August -- the highest level in more than 24 years and more than twice the rate when Perry took office in December 2000.

The new unemployment rate for Texas is still below the national average of 9.1%. But the new figures from the Texas Workforce Commission included some disturbing trends: There was a net jobs loss of 1,300 in Texas during the month of August, even worse than than the latest national figures showing zero job growth.

While the private sector did add 8,100 jobs in Texas during August, this was more than offset by a shrinking public sector resulting in the loss of 9,400 government jobs, state figures show.

State officials blamed national economic trends. "Texas continues to feel the pressures of a stagnant national economy," said Texas Workforce Commmission chairman Tom Pauken.

But the figures also show some key sectors of the Texas economy losing strength during the month: Trade and transportation, mining, information, and leisure all experienced  job losses. Mark Lavergne, a spokesman for the commission, confirmed that the new unemployment rate of 8.5% -- up slightly from 8.4% the previous month -- is the highest unemployment rate for Texas since July, 1987. When Perry took office in December 2000 after George W. Bush resigned, the unemployment rate in Texas was 4.2%

At this week's GOP presidential rate, Perry touted his record of "creating more than one million jobs" in Texas, but made no mention of the recent downward trends in the state's economy. A spokesman for his campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the latest figures.

*** UPDATE *** Perry's campaign this afternoon responded:

"Texas is not immune to the effects of the national recession," said Ray Sullivan, Perry's chief spokesman. "Yet Texas continues to outperform the rest of the country and is still home to roughly 40% of the net new jobs created nationwide since June 2009."

He continued: "And even during this national economic downturn, which the president's misguided policies have only worsened, Texas remains the nation's top economy, attracting jobs and growing by more than 1,000 people a day. As president, Gov. Perry will get our nation's fiscal house in order, free employers from the onerous tax and regulatory burdens undermining our economy, and restore confidence in private sector job creators across this nation so we can get America working again."

OH NO - Say it ain't SO!

24 YEARS? Seriously?

This isn't going to sit well with the stuck on stupid crowd!

Slick Rick & Mittens will continue to slug it out on the race to the bottom!

In the meantime, maybe Perry can pray away the pain the people of his state are experiencing...

It worked so well with him for rain...

Good Texas government jobs are lost to give that money as giveaways to corporations, and replaced by low wage jobs with no benefits and no security. Who would want people who live and work in and for your community all their lives teaching, firefighting, policing, fixing roads, ect., and then retiring in that community with a little dignity because they had some benefits that allowed them to do so, when you can eliminate those and replace them with high turnover low wage jobs with no benefits. Who would trade working one good job with decent pay and benefits for several part time low paying jobs with no benefits. Rick Perry that's who but then again he has himself a full time job with excellent benefits, his job is to make Texans pay in every way possible so corporations don't have to. When your kids are being taught by the lowest bidder, because your representative has signed a pledge to Grover which supercedes any obligation to the community he is supposedly representing, don't be surprised if your kids do not get the kind ofeducation you hoped they would.

Backhouse- that is a lie no matter how many times it's reposted

Fuel Taxes-Texas ranks 38th

Sales Taxes-Texas ranks 14th

Property Taxes-Texas ranks 12th

Murders by Guns-Texas ranks 26th (Washington DC is 1st)

High School Graduates- Texas 72.5% (CA 69.2% & NY 67.4%)

Illiteracy rate 3rd worst (CA is worst in illiteracy and NY is 2nd from the worst)

Teacher salaries-Texas ranks 12th

% below the poverty line-Texas ranks 8th (13.8% vs NY 13.6%)

Worst polluters? According to the leftist National Resources Defense Council-that would be in order, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Florida

Most uninsured-Texas, New Mexico, California and Nevada BECAUSE OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION.

Most Hazardous waste? California is 1st -Texas is 5th (Michigan 3rd, NY 4th)

Workmans Comp? according to usworkerscomp dot com the bottom states are: Illinois came in last,

with Wyoming, Rhode Island and New York very close to the bottom.

Over 25 Education? True on HS grads, mainly because of illegal immigration ,but more telling is that according to the Census Bureau Texas ranks 30th on those over 25 with a Bachelor's Degree

According to the Clean Water Act Scorecard, Texas ranks in the upper percentile of states with clean water.

prison and probation: Texas ranks 7th on prison percentage and 5th on probation percentage

Federal Reserve statement 8/22/11 on Texas jobs and job growth

The first provides a breakdown of employment growth by sector since the recession ended, listing each employment sector by its weight in the employment mix of Texas. The most jobs have been created in the educational and health services sector, which accounts for 13.5 percent of Texas’ employment. The second-most jobs have been created in the professional and business services sector, which accounts for 12.5 percent of the Texas workforce. The mining sector, which includes support activities for both mining and oil and gas, employs 2.1 percent (yes, two-point-one percent) of Texas’ workers. In the second chart, you will see that these jobs are not low-paying jobs. The average weekly wage in the education and health services sector is $790; in the professional and business services sector it is $1,117; and in the mining sector, the average weekly wage is $2,271. Together these three sectors account for 68 percent of the jobs that have been created in Texas in the past two years.

Old GOP asks Why wasn't the national Debt sky High When Unions were at their peak ....?

Because people made decant wages and benefits, they could pay their house payments and other expenses and had money left over to spend with the small businessmen in the community, then when they retired they had their own health benefits, and retirement, so they did not depend on government programs for their day to day existence. Now that we have fewer unions it has made people lazy, they now just want a government handout, instead of working hard, and bargaining hard, for a fair slice of the wealth their labor produces. Now people say I don't need a union, I won't work to hard, because I work cheap, and the government will take care of me. You want to see some people work hard to earn a good living and take responsibility for their own costs for health care and retirement then take a look at the trade unions, that is exactly what you will see.

Federal welfare turned a fine man like Rick Perry into a welfare queen, that federal welfare turned the whole state of Texas, into lazy no goods that would rather have a handout than a job. Obama wrecks everything with his tax and spend it in Texas policies. You are a hoot JS1, you just don't realize it, but you are a hoot. Forrest - In todays economy, people have to do what they have to do. In the event that money is a problem for a move, that's where family steps in to help. Other than that, what's a person to do? Starve?

There was a time in my life when economic conditions were very similar to this... right after I was discharged from the Air Force. Jobs were scarce... it was very difficult. My first daughter was only 2 at the time. We had to rely on family members to front some move money so I could go to work in a different state. If it weren't for them, I would have had to turn to a life of crime (smile). I had just gotten laid off from a job I had. The union I was in couldn't help because there was no other work available.

Gee Cannibals - So quick to want to toss someone out of the country for disagreeing with your assessment of the way freedom should be and what's contained in it. I guess that falls in line with Mao, or Pol Pot... or even Chavez.. except instead of tossing them out of the country they toss them in prison and beat them daily. If that's your definition of freedom for all, then thank God you aren't ruler.

You'll accept all sorts of abhorrent behavior except dissention.

Seems that we all have skin in the game and we all accept the conditions under which we choose to live.

Unfortunately for those living today our politicians over the years have promised us everything to get our votes or $$$, but ignored what the cost would be in the long term. We in turn, failed to ask what the long term cost would be. Now many want to blame the right for opening up our eyes go what we sowed in the past..

Sorry folks, our complacency in allowing both the right and left to stroke us all got us here, you all just don't want to admit it.

I suspect some would move but then who would be there for their ageing sick parents and what have you. People need good paying stable employment in their own home town, that is what makes for a strong community, and family values. Yes we do what we must to feed our families but nobody praises the Gypsy lifestyle as the traditional American way. You never see a Norman Rockwell print of young couples moving place to place to earn a living week by week, with a U-haul trailer behind their nearly broke down car.

    @American#'s

"A public sector loss of 9400 jobs is hardly a bad thing when campaigning for less government."

Maybe not, we will see if he takes credit for it or if he attempts to lay the blame somewhere else. He should lose the votes of those 9,400 people who have lost their income, they are not a campaign plank, those are real people with wives and children depending on them, and their jobs are not likely to ever come back, so now they will be forced to be on the government dole for unemployment, food stamps, and medicaid, will Perry now call them lazy, lefty, liberal, socialists just looking for a handout, that plays pretty well to his base too. A smart politician would use this coming and going, however a decent Governor would not. If any of those 9,400 poor souls ever vote republican again, I would have to question their sanity. If Perry uses them politically they should question his integrity, and his humanity. I sure as hell do.

    I have no idea why the MSM has never picked up on this, but it's all PART OF THE PLAN by Republicans to destroy the middle class;

HIGHER UNEMPLOYMENT AND LOWER WAGES -- ON PURPOSE.... About a month ago, I described the Republican economic plan as "higher unemployment, lower wages, and slower growth." It's worth appreciating the fact that (a) I meant that literally; and (b) occasionally, GOP officials will acknowledge their intentions.

Tim Fernholz and Jim Tankersley reported this week on a little-noticed report distributed by House Speaker John Boehner's (R-Ohio) office last week, summarizing the findings of the Republican staff of the Joint Economic Committee.

[T]he paper predicts that cutting the number of public employees would send highly skilled workers job hunting in the private sector, which in turn would lead to lower labor costs and increased employment. But "lowering labor costs" is economist-speak for lowering wages -- does the GOP want to be in the position of advocating for lower wages for voters who work in the private sector?

    http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2011_03/028650.php

This is a big play on the part of the GOP, a bold bet that they can deliver EVERYTHING to the wealthy elites while still fooling enough people into voting them to total power.

I would imagine that a portion of that unemployment is directly related to the drought conditions. And as so aptly pointed out, it is still better than the national average, and even though it is worse than when Perry took office.....I believe the time frame quoted is 12 years since 2000-give or take a couple of months.....In 5 years the geniuses running the State of Illinois have taken it from one of the top 5 in the nation for fostering job growth, encouraging businesses, attracting new businesses to being 48th in the nation......Texas still looks pretty good by comparison. If you can totally trash a state in 5 years, and that state is still on the skids downward to oblivion, then I guess I am in the glass house and not about lobbing stones.

“I would imagine that a portion of that unemployment is directly related to the drought conditions.”

Probably true but the problem is that it has been increasing steadily for several months, well prior to the wild fires, and you haven’t yet seen the effects of the reductions in teachers and educational professionals.

It will be over 9% soon!!

    Yes, Sue, it probably is.

Maybe Rick Perry can also explain cutting 70% of the fire department's budget this year knowing the drought would cause fires.

Why is it that when it is a republican official's job record that is in question, folks look for reasons to explain it but when the national numbers increase, it is President Obama's fault yet no one bothers to consider the floods, fires, BP oil spill as a contributing factor?

Jody, you are comparing apples to oranges. It has nothing to do with republican or democrat. The reason they don't really blame Perry is because he sets a business friendly tone where Obama doesn't. It's not dem, repub rethoric. It's the tone about promoting business. Obama does not have it in him to promote business unless it involves union workers.

Amy - republicans are noted for being business friendly, growth oriented. Far left ideologues like Obama just aren't. It's a matter of how the tone is set. The reason Obama won so big in 08 was because he was young, bright, seemingly full of ideas, looked like he was going to bring forth some much needed changes... and everyone was hoping he would be able to help the economy... well, unfortunately for all of us, the tone Obama set for small businesses and private sector, caused shrinkage instead of expansion.

Unfortunately, the Right Wing made it their #1 Priority to undo the will of the people! They have tried to punish Mr. Obama for winning and punish the American people for voting him in. They determined not to allow America or Mr. Obama have the opportunity to see new thougts and ideas because they have blocked, philibustered and stalled anything that was not same old Republican doctrine.

As a Christian with moderate views who has voted both ways, I believe it is absolutley shameful and anti-American what this Party of "Christian family values" have staged to thwart the will of the people...They have lost my vote in 2012. Are you trying to tell me that republicans were the reason Obama didn't get what he wanted? You'd better go back and see what the structure of government was like between 08 and 10.

What little influence republicans had was minimal. The way you make it sound, the Democrats are either inedpt or very very weak. Republicans now control the house. Democrats control the Senate and the White House... again how effective are democrats against Republicans? And this is the party you approve of? Geeeezzzzz.

Oh now Brianb I would not call a record number of filibusters from senate republicans handing anybody anything on a silver platter. Effectively taking majority rule away and causing a super majority to do anything is exactly what Paris says it is, it is thwarting the will of the people. Further more they did publicly state immediately after the election that their main priority was to win the next presidential election, "we will break him" "this will be his Waterloo" were some of the phrases used by elected representatives of the US government towards the newly elected POTUS, and who in the hell elected him if not the citizens of the US, Paris is dead nuts accurate with what she is saying in regards to that. You say you are independent but you defend the republicans who have exactly two solutions for everything that ails us, cut taxes and get rid of regulations. It is akin to the days when leeches were used to bleed people as a cure for what ever ailed them, it's not very innovative, or effective and is downright dangerous. It is not nearly innovative enough for for an independent thinker. The republicans have clearly by their own public admission have put their own political aspirations ahead of American people they were elected to serve. They never offer any compromise, or any alternate solutions, they have exactly two ideas period, cut taxes, cut regulations, and that is it. Politicians run as dems or repubs but once elected they have a duty to all citizens not just those that voted for them. It amazes me that a man of your brainpower can defend them. If they had good ideas that Obama shot down I could see it, but they have not offered any solutions other than when Obama is gone things will magically get better, because he causes a bad mood on business. No policies or tax rates have changed substantially, things are just bad because Obama causes a bad mood for businessmen. It is a ludicrous theory to buy into. He has not, because he can not legislate a single policy, that is congress's job, he can only suggest and cheer-lead an agenda he can not enact it. If by the GM deal you mean he is only concerned with union jobs being saved, again I can not believe a guy with your smarts can see all the other millions of jobs saved by that move as a matter of fact I will bet you a ham sandwhich that the unionized jobs were the smallest percentage of jobs saved overall and you know it pains me to admit that. If you see this and want to yak about it later I'll be around later right now I have to go to a union meeting and light a fire under some young people's asses. I got to tell them that they have to work hard to make their boss a buck, and then bargian hard, and then vote democratic if they want to continue to make a decent wage and fringe package for their hard work. It has nothing to do with their boss being in a good mood.

Forrest, You are absolutely correct. When there is a "majority" in Congress, the "minority" has the power of the filibuster. And the Republicans took full advantage of that for the express purpose to block the President wherever and whenever possible. The GOP could care less about the plight of their fellow Americans nor the economy of this Country.

Rick Perry is a one-man Ponzi scheme; his smoke and mirrors budgets, his crony capitalism--it was inevitable that sooner or later, truth would come and bite him on the backside.

This is why almost all the other candidates are "former" employees -- it's very inconvenient to have to account for your record in real time. Gov. Romney doesn't have to answer for anything happening in Massachusetts; Gov. Huntsman doesn't have to talk about the last three years in Utah; former Speaker Newt Gingrich doesn't have to talk about votes he made or plans he authorized recently. Gov. Johnson, Gov. Roemer, Sen. Santorum, Herman Cain...they can all say whatever they want because they haven't had to account for themselves. Like them or not, Gov. Perry and Rep. Bachmann and Rep. Paul are actually confronting real issues in real time.

That's true but it doesn't excuse Governor Perry for not being honest about his job record. He dishes out the criticism of Romney and Huntsman records as former Governors and President Obama's current efforts while denying that the very factors affecting Texas are those affecting the National numbers.

It is a National problem and it is time for both parties in Congress to quit playing politics with America's struggling economy. All the spending cuts demanded by the GOPTP are trickling down to the states and causing even more harm. More cuts, more jobs losses; more job losses, less state and federal revenues; less revenues, more cuts; more cuts, more job losses......snowball the size of Mt. McKinley.

The long-term debt is a problem that must be resolved but cutting spending too much and too soon during an economic recovery only adds to the duration of any recession and/or the lingering affects of that recession.

            Jody, you nailed it.

Notice how American workers will see their 2% tax savings (passed by 2010 Congress) go away in 3.5 months. The President proposes giving American workers an additional 1.1% through 2012 and giving businesses a 3.1% savings for every worker.

You would think it would pass immediately.

Instead, Speaker Boehner wants Congress to treat it just like they did the debt debate. In other words, Congressional Republicans want 14 months just like they have had on the debt. In other words, 14 months from now Congressional Republicans will be talking about a tax committee.

I hope every American business and every American worker realizes that Congressional Republicans are the ones planning to raise taxes.

American workers are cutting back spending because of these threats. When American consumers cut back spending, business lay off workers.

The blame falls squarely on Congressional Republicans for their love of committees and commissions.

Damage, get it right it is commie pinko fag. Name one President elected for the first time that has had experience at being president. qualifications according to the free market require to be hired you need experience in the field you are applying for, a college degree, good credit and you must be white. Just what is a commie to you today, someone who expresses their opinion even though it does not match yours, has no issue with a black person running the country or the local grocery store. Inquiring minds want to know.

I just said "commie" to counter your "every conservative is a Tea Party member" BS. Or "Tea Bag" or "Tea Bagger" or whatever you people refer to all conservatives as. I don't know where you get the tired, old "you have to be white to be hired for a job" crap either.

I don't have any problem with a black man running the country. If Obama was a conservative, I'd be a big supporter of his. Of course, you would be calling him a "sellout, Uncle Tom house negro" because that's how you people are. What I DO have a problem with is a far-left liberal running the country.

Shame on you, John Stephens. Don't you know it's offensive to use the president's middle name? Doesn't matter that it IS HIS FRIGGIN' MIDDLE NAME! It makes you a racist...somehow. They can explain how, but it does. Islam is a race now, according to liberals, so it now qualifies for all the PC whining and tip-toeing that a real race qualifies for. Got it?

I guess George Bush's middle name was W, the man was so damn stupid he had a letter for a name, people that knew and loved him called him by his middle name, they even pronounced it like a word, they would say Dubya so poor George did not realize and then feel bad because all he got was a single letter for a name. His favorite episodes of sesame street were the ones where they would say today's show was brought to you by the letter W even though they didn't say it quite right George Dubya loved that. Names can be really interesting and can tell you a lot about a person isn't that right Damage123. You know Damage is an interesting moniker now that you got me thinking about this stuff. But then again whats in a name?

Speaking of Texas; what's up with the SCOTUS sparing the life of that no good POS murderer? There is NO doubt about his guilt. I'm sure the libs jumped for joy upon hearing that. They should lobby to get him released. Maybe he can go live with "Houston" in his Granmama's basement.

Hey there Damage I see you're still ranting.

From my apparent commie perspective... wouldn't it be better to prove his guilt beyond a shadow of a doubt? Sounds like they tried to railroad the guy from what I heard on the news. What's the rush? But to further my pinko commie perspective a little further I am against the death penalty. Why is that you might ask (if you weren't so close minded)? Well a "true" life sentence in prison does sound all that pleasant to me.

While the private sector did add 8,100 jobs in Texas during August, this was more than offset by a shrinking public sector resulting in the loss of 9,400 government jobs, state figures show.

8.5% unemployment not good to tout as a record. The release of thousands of teachers and state workers no doubt hurt this number. Again, how does the GOP narrative work? It helps to cut public or government workers, they don't count as jobs.

Not my view but even if you are of the opinion that those jobs aren't useful, necessary or can't be afforded those people lacking their job will claim unemployment and become more of a burden than a boon to the economy. The U.S. can't continue to impose this idea of through spending cuts and only spending cuts we grow stronger in dealing with our deficits, state or national.

While this might be a boon for Democratic talking heads, I would rather that others take heed. The super "spending cut only" committee formally met today, I'm sure they will not take.

You are exactly right Yellowdog, those are 9400 real people who lost real income and have real wives and children, but these people sure do like their government job at $176,000 a year and benefits beyond compare to any in the private sector. I hate phony two faced bastards like that.

Liberalism (from the Latin liberalis, "of freedom") is the belief in the importance of liberty and equal rights.

Conservatism (Latin: conservare, "to preserve") is a political and social philosophy that promotes the maintenance of traditional institutions and supports, at the most, minimal and gradual change in society.

No problem, right Ricky P? Just blame it on Obama and his administration ... right? Or, maybe you could now brag on the fact you hold the Guinness Book Of Record for lethol injections by any US govenor ... that'd be a good one to run on, now wouldn't it, Ricky? 235 ... soon to be 236 ... great accomplishment for a Christian man! I'm sure Saint Peter is recording every one of them, too.

Rick Perry is gonna flame & burn like a kamikaze plane way, way before the 2012 general elections get here.

Texas is not the top US economy, California is, by a HUGE margin. What is this guy smoking? Also, regulations are not in place simply to have regulations in place. They serve a purpose. Namely they are there so that corporate America doesn't take advantage of their tremendous strength and harm us. The current housing crisis that spurred the current recession was caused by a stripping of banking regulations. And now, Republicans want to blame those same regulations as one of the causes of our woes. It's amazing what you can pass off as truth when the people you are talking to only want to hear that it's Obama's fault.

When George Bushy was giving millions of tax cuts back to millionaires, I personally panicked and

asked myself if it was economically practical or feasible. I also received the check but I remained very

skeptical of the kind of impact that would have on the economy. I was very right. We can all See the

impact that the stupid decision has had on American economy.
