First Thoughts: Daley troubles

Daley troubles: Reports complaining about the White House chief of staff surface… But don’t expect a knee-jerk move from this White House… Axelrod pens memo listing what is going right for Team Obama… At 11:10 am in Virginia, the president signs patent reform legislation into law… On the 2012 trail, Perry unloads on Romney… Bachmann’s struggling -- big time… Tom Ridge to endorse Huntsman in New Hampshire… And Bill Clinton to appear on “Meet the Press” this Sunday.

*** Daley troubles: When things are going well for an administration or campaign team, they’re hailed as geniuses and the toast of Washington. But when things aren’t going so well, you begin to see stories like these. Politico: "[White House Chief of Staff] Bill Daley is off to a very rocky start... [C]ritics inside and outside the West Wing are questioning whether he is the tough, competent manager needed to shake up the operation and propel Obama into the 2012 election year." Here's the Huffington Post: “Bill Daley Leaves Some Democrats Longing For Rahm Emanuel.” (Who would have ever thought you’d see that headline in HuffPo, of all places?) What’s more, a new book by author Ron Suskind details rivalries and conflicts inside of Obama’s old economic team. It’s been a “pile on” week -- first on Perry at the debate, then on Obama, and now on Daley. In Daley’s case, as sports fans know well, when you can’t do much about the owner (Obama), you complain about the coach (Daley).

*** Don’t expect a knee-jerk move from this White House: One the complaints about Daley is his relations with Capitol Hill Democrats. But in his defense, congressional Dems are no longer in charge (though Democrats are in charge of the Senate). But Daley was brought in to deal with the business community and Republicans, and those relationships have yet to pay dividends. Arguably, whatever positive personal developments have taken place between the White House and Boehner/McConnell, they’ve given the president nada. The final straw for some congressional Democrats was the speech-timing debacle. Also, keep in mind the Schumer-Durbin rivalry here. Durbin and Daley have known each other for years, and whether there’s ACTUALLY something there or just an assumption of something there by folks, it has an impact. Finally, despite what James Carville has called for -- to panic and fire a bunch of folks -- the last thing you’ll see this White House do is something knee-jerk. It’s simply not in Obama’s DNA. Rather, expect those who have the president’s trust but also have close friends on Capitol Hill (the Pete Rouses of the world perhaps?) to (re)expand their portfolios. The White House went through a more dramatic leadership change than many folks appreciate. While the names may have been familiar, Daley-Plouffe have a MUCH different management style than Rahm-Axe.

*** Remain calm. All is well! Despite the White House’s tough week, the re-election campaign team has released a memo from senior strategist David Axelrod listing what’s going right for them as we head into 2012. “Public polling released this week makes clear that Americans strongly agree with the President’s plan to create jobs and provide economic security for the middle class,” Axelrod says. “Members of the media have focused on the President’s approval ratings as if they existed in a black box. Following the intransigence of the Republicans during the debt debate, the approval rating of the GOP brand dropped to a historic low... Despite what you hear in elite commentary, the President’s support among base voters and in key demographic groups has stayed strong... The Republicans have yet to choose a nominee, and therefore, most Americans have yet to learn much about their records or visions for the country. Their candidates are busy courting the Tea Party, signing off on any economic pledge it might demand.”

*** Obama’s day: At 11:10 am ET in Alexandria, VA, the president will sign into law the America Invents Act, which reforms the patent system.

*** Perry unloads on Romney: Last night in Iowa was the first time this week when Rick Perry was on offense against Mitt Romney. Per NBC’s Alex Moe, Andrew Rafferty, and Anthony Terrell, Perry distinguished his upbringing from Romney’s. “As the son of tenant farmers, I can tell you I wasn’t born with four aces in my hand,” Perry told a crowd of more than 250 at the Greene County Republican party fundraiser. Perry continued, “Gov. Romney … said it’s pretty easy to be governor when you have four aces in your hand and you think you’re good at poker. There are some folks back in Texas who are a little offended by that. We work hard in Texas.” Perry also hit Romney on health care, noting the similarities between Romney’s law in Massachusetts and Obama’s federal law.  “I think it is very important that we put someone as the nominee that doesn't blur the line between Obama and the Republican Party,” Perry said. It appears Perry’s game plan for the NEXT debate is to not simply defend himself from the slings and arrows, but to throw a few more punches Romney’s way.

*** Bachmann’s struggling -- big time: The New York Times writes about Bachmann’s numerous gaffes and misstatements, including her recent accusation (not supported by the facts) that the HPV vaccine is linked to mental retardation. People close to her campaign “spoke of their frustration that Mrs. Bachmann, who entered the race with a reputation for making unsupportable statements on cable television, has not found the discipline to win credibility with major Republican donors and influential referees in the conservative news media... Jim Dyke, a former communications director for the Republican National Committee unaffiliated with any candidate, said: 'This is the nail in the coffin in her campaign. Because you can be a cable television darling by saying provocative things, but you can’t be president of the United States.'" Bottom line: Bachmann’s candidacy is struggling -- and if she never gets back on track, this week will be seen as the final nail. She had a good debate on Monday, but blew it the day after. And the folks who are probably most pleased by this are the ones from Austin, TX.

*** Ridge to back Huntsman: At 10:15 am ET in Manchester, Jon Huntsman will pick up an endorsement from former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, NBC’s Jo Ling Kent reports. Ridge will announce his endorsement at a press conference -- with Huntsman -- at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics at St. Anselm College. In a statement to the New Hampshire Union-Leader, Ridge said Huntsman is a "serious, insightful leader who will bring together people from across the political spectrum to solve the many changes we face, both at home and abroad." Kent notes that the endorsement comes in the midst of significant staffing changes within the Huntsman campaign. Huntsman still suffers from low poll numbers nationally and locally, but said he is upbeat about the campaign's future. "All I can cite is anecdotal evidence," he told reporters yesterday. "We are making progress, we are absolutely making progress." Our take: This endorsement would have been a much bigger deal 12 years ago, even four years ago. Today? It just feels like a different Republican Party than the one Tom Ridge was a rising star, during the first decade of the 21st century.

*** On the 2012 trail: Bachmann is in California, where she holds a rally in Orange County, tapes an appearance for the “Tonight Show,” and addresses the California GOP fall convention… Cain is in South Carolina… Huntsman remains in New Hampshire… Paul is in Reno, NV… And Perry makes multiple stops in Iowa.

*** Friday's "The Daily Rundown" line-up: Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-LA) on why he's backing Gov. Rick Perry (R-TX) for president… Former Reps. Martin Frost (D-TX) and Tom Davis (R-VA) on the fight in Congress over jobs and debt… Romney Campaign Senior Adviser Eric Fehrnstrom on the 2012 fight… NBC News Perry Campaign Reporter Carrie Dann with the latest on his campaign… And more 2012 news with NPR's Ari Shapiro, Comcast's Robert Traynham and Roll Call's Shira Toeplitz.

*** On “Meet the Press” this Sunday: NBC’s David Gregory interviews former President Bill Clinton, as well as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

What exactly IS Boehner's JOBS plan??

Anyone care to answer?

After 10 months of political posturing & teasing what we got yesterday was a 15 minute rerun of the same failed policies that got us into this mess in the first place!

If the tax cuts worked why is unemployment at 9.2%?

Otis is hell bent on protecting his rich cronies while 98% of Americans SUFFER!

This feisty redhead says... ENOUGH!

Hallooo Fellow 98%-ers!
If you want the top 2% to pay up the revs and put our country back on track, click your heels together.

If you want to end tax breaks for the wealthy, tax loopholes for Big Oil &+corporate jets, hoot and holler.
If you are against Speaker Boehner's plan of repairing our roads & bridges in exchange for increased oil drilling, stamp your feet.
If you want to extend unemployment benefits, knock your knees together.
If you want schools to be modernized and repaired, flap your arms.
If you want to keep the AJA as one piece so it doesn't get watered down to nothing as per usual, blink your eyes.
If you want to cut taxes for middle class and small businesses, wiggle your nose.
If you want to stop our wealthiest citizens paying lower taxes than their secretaries, puff out your cheeks.
If you want to cut taxes for working families, flex your abs.
If you want to find temp work to build skills, do a push-up.
If you want summer work for disadvantaged youth, hum a tune.
If you want jobs for construction workers, teachers, vets, young people and longterm unemployed, give us a smile.
If you want to put our police, firefighters and first responders back to work, whistle a happy tune.
(feels good, phew)
If you have or will now call/write your reps. and sens. to pass American Jobs Bill, congrats and have a fantastic Friday.
LET'S PUT OUR AMERICAN FAMILY BACK TO WORK!

I was a little bit disappointed, but, not the least bit surprised when my two favorite MSDNC comedy shows (Wiffleball and De Rev.) did the Nasty Redhead silent shuffle on Solyndragate last night:

“move along, there’s nothing to see here, move along”

Just imagine the loud, leftously-indignant, full-of-sh!t, 24/7/365 coverage they would have given it if it was as big an embarrassment for GWB as it’s going to be for their Messiah, Barry!!!

Oh well, they are only delaying the inevitable. And, as history shows, the cover-up is worse than the crime.

I see many, many, LMAO’s on Solyndragate in my future.

Solyndra / Solargate …. Whatever

Time to add a few government jobs that ….repubs will be for and dems will be against?

Special prosecutor and staff as no joe suggested yesterday.

Obama and his big bundler, $535 million down the drain …. Blah blah blah ….but let's just cut the Obama bullsh!t and get to the chase.

The White House has already been caught lying as e-mails have revealed.

They ignored /pressured the GAO and OMB.

There was no question about Solyndra’s credit worthyness – Fitch rated them as a B+ …… THAT’S A NONINVESTMENT RATING FOR ANYONE.

Do they not have an internet connection at the White House?

[Bush distraction / bs? The Obama people tell everyone that Bush was looking at it. They conveniently forget to mention that they (Energy Department’s credit committee) voted NO on Jan. 9 2008.]

The big deal is that Obama put his Tulsa oil billionaire bundler’s millions before the American taxpayer’s HALF BILLION.

Deliberate, despicable and wanton disregard for Americans.

Trust our Justice Department with Eric Holder? ….You got to be kidding…..

no joe’s right – it’s time to get a special prosecutor.

Maybe Obama can create a job, huh?

No one here to trumpet the amazing new economic program of John Boehner and the other Conservative Republicans? Not really a surprise. From new polling:

Though most Americans disapprove of both parties in Congress, they disapprove of Republicans more. Seventy-two percent of Americans disapprove of the job Republicans in Congress are doing, compared to 63 percent who disapprove of the Democrats in Congress.

Among Democrats, more approve than disapprove of the job Democrats in Congress are doing. That is reversed for Republicans - more of them disapprove than approve of the job members of their own party are doing in Congress. Independents disapprove of both parties in Congress.

In keeping with Congress' dismal review, just 6 percent of registered voters think most members deserve re-election - the lowest percentage ever in CBS News Polls during the past 20 years, and a lower percentage than the 9 percent who thought so right before the 2010 midterms.

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20107148-503544.html?tag=stack

That's right, will Americans are upset with the job our politicians are doing and are particularly fed up with Congress, they're ESPECIALLY disgusted with the performance of Republicans. The numbers are becoming very ominous for Republicans in the 2012 elections.

The president has to keep taking his case to the people, concerning the passage of the Jobs Bill. Of course Boehner and his Republican-Tea Potty Thugs have one goal, and one goal only is to Defeat President Obama, at no matter the cost to the American people

So, the President has to pull back the olive branch and replace it with a sledge hammer. Then he has to lay more facts out there, such as the first the stimulus package did work and the facts check shows that the first stimulus package created millions of jobs. Also, let's not forget the 17 Billion with a B that Texas got to balance their budget.

Second the facts show that there were more regulations on business in the 1990s than there are today. So, this is just another lie by Boehner and his Republican-Tea Potty Thugs.

It's sad that this far right movement gets crazier every day and they will say and do anything, while their base just gets on board their crazy train.

Many of these folks on the right are just un-patriotic Americans, who want to kill jobs in order to defeat President Obama.

Regarding Solyndra: "Defeat is not the worst of failures. Not to have tried is the true failure." George Edward Woodberry. If we as a country--whether private or public industry, research and development or innovation--do not take risks, we will lose the future. The GOPTP is looking for scandal. Were mistakes made? Maybe, maybe not. Was the owner honest? Maybe, maybe not. Or is it more likely that the only reason Solyndra went bankrupt was because of the Great Recession, the bad economy; people and businesses are holding on to their money and not investing in the future?

The Coal Industry Backs Boehner with $1.5 Million in Donations — “We Think He Is Good for Business”

U.S. coal companies have pumped $1.5 million into House Speaker John Boehner’s political operation this year, a sign of the industry’s beefed-up efforts to fight new and proposed regulations from the Obama administration.

The coal industry now ranks as one of the top sources of cash for the Ohio Republican, rivaling such perennial GOP donors as Wall Street and the real-estate industry. A large part of the coal industry’s donations came in a single week at the end of June.

Donations from coal-industry interests account for more than 10% of the $12.5 million Mr. Boehner collected from Jan. 1 to June 30 for fund-raising accounts he directly controls. Mr. Boehner’s personal campaign account collected less than $200,000 from the coal industry during the entire 2009-10 election cycle.

The cash flowing to Mr. Boehner’s coffers stems partly from the GOP’s efforts to roll back the Obama administration’s environmental and energy policies since taking control of the House in 2010, and replace them with fewer regulations in order to boost domestic energy production. Republicans say proposals to curb pollution from coal-fired power plants and limit mining threaten to raise energy costs and stifle job-creation. The speaker has long been a backer of the coal industry, and many coal interests are based in his home state of Ohio.

In April, the House voted to prohibit the Environmental Protection Agency from regulating greenhouse-gas emissions from coal-fired power plants and other industrial sources. In July, the House approved legislation that would limit the EPA’s authority to veto water permits previously issued by the Army Corps of Engineers. Other measures benefiting the coal industry are still moving through the House, though they have gone nowhere in the Democratic-controlled Senate…..

One top donor to Mr. Boehner this year has been William Koch, president of Oxbow Corp., which owns a coal-mining operation. Mr. Koch and his wife contributed a total of $70,000 to Mr. Boehner, according to fund-raising records. Two of Mr. Koch’s brothers are well-known Republican contributors.

“We are a big supporter of John Boehner. We think he is good for business,” said Brad Goldstein, a spokesman for Oxbow, based in West Palm Beach, Fla. “He looks out for business interests, and he wants to create more jobs for America, while this administration has been rather harsh on the industry.”

Bright Source Energy got $1.37 billion from Obama to create 86 jobs – cost per job - $15.9 million.

Abengoa got $1.45 billion from Obama to create 85 jobs – cost per job - $17 million.

Want a bargain?

How about US Geothermal who got only $102.2 million to create 10 jobs.

That’s only $10.2 million per job and is actually below the average of $10.8 million per job of the over 3,000 jobs created with the Obama billions.

Solyndra and solar?

Three other solar companies have already failed this year too. And Obama is planning to double down on more solar loans.

Geothermal?

Top 5 – Ormat is down 25%, Ram Power is down 80%, Alterra is trading south of a buck, Nevada Geothermal has been downgraded to a sell after receiving $57.9 million Obamabucks.

Abengoa and all their stuff is down 17% which ain’t bad, but why is Obama giving $1.45 BILLION to a SPANISH COMPANY.

This is absurd. How can libs pretend that Obama cares about the unemployed?

The democrat party is in disarray. Poor leadership, infighting and just the wrong vision for the United States of America have driven the party down to its lowest level. Pulitzer Prize winning author Ron Suskind’s new book “Confidence Men” reveals the inner non-workings of the WH. It features a tax cheat Treasury Secretary Geithner refusing to follow orders. You have a president who is way over his head and never should have been elected (error corrected 11/12) shown as frustrated and agitated.

So instead of all the whining and complaining about the Republicans not supporting the president, the Hilly impersonators on here of Feisty, Beverly, Nash, Navy, et. al. ladies ought to clean up their own house and hold their party accountable for the failures. No one with one ounce of intelligence would expect the opposition to kowtow to your nonsensical rants while your own party is not kowtowing to the anointed one. Ladies how are you enjoying your Hilly “PIE” that you so rightly deserve?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/09/15/tim-geithner-ignored-obama-order_n_965404.html

Suskind's book supports other accounts of disagreement among advisers over how large a stimulus was necessary to revive the economy and how aggressively to deal with financial institutions that had become "too big to fail."

Larry Summers, the former White House economic adviser, is quoted as lamenting that he and others felt "home alone" and that mistakes made under Obama would not have happened under President Clinton, for whom Summers also served. Interviewed by Suskind, Summers initially denied making such comments, then acknowledged them, saying he was frustrated at having "five issues" of major importance to deal with at once and not "five times as many" officials to handle them.

The book says one of Obama's top advisers, former chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, was not the president's first choice for the position. According to Suskind, Emanuel's name was not even on the initial short list, which included White House aide Pete Rouse.

Breaking News (for those uninformed) Forbes just listed San Antonio, El Paso and Austin – all in Texas – in the top 12 cities in this country that have the best outlook for jobs. In fact San Antonio is #1. Damn I love those four aces. Here’s some more Hilly PIE ladies. Enjoy and munch down on a second piece ROFLMAO!!!!!

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44543246/ns/business-forbes_com/#.TnNNGdS4KSo

“We do see some bright spots in hiring, especially in San Antonio, which has the most promising hiring outlook for the fourth quarter,” says Jonas Prising, president of the Americas at ManpowerGroup. “Employers in other markets in Texas, including El Paso and Austin, are also anticipating strong hiring increases.”

The San Antonio metro area enjoys a 17 percent net employment outlook, the percentage of employers that expect to add employees (25 percent) minus the percentage that expect to reduce their workforce (8 percent). Another 64 percent said they anticipate no change, and 3 percent didn’t know.

“San Antonio has continued to see new jobs created, and new jobs brought to the region,” says Richard Perez, president and chief executive of the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce. “I would say that San Antonio is well positioned to come out ahead in the future as well because our cost of living remains low, making it a good environment for companies to increase their investment in jobs here, plus we have a very talented labor pool because we graduate more than 30,000 from our colleges and universities each year.”

The industry with the largest economic impact and largest number of employees in San Antonio is health care and biosciences, with more than 142,000 employees, Perez says. “This surprises a lot of people who think we are only a tourism town. One of every five workers is in the health care sector, and it has an estimated $24 billion economic impact here. We also have large manufacturing and financial services sectors. And yes, we have a significant tourism industry in San Antonio, with approximately 106,000 employees.”

The largest employers in the San Antonio area include the Department of Defense, whose workplaces include Fort Sam Houston, Lackland Air Force Base and Randolph Air Force Base. Combined they employ over 70,000 individuals. The largest corporate employer is San Antonio-based financial services firm United Services Automobile Association, with 14,800 employees. H-E-B Grocery Company follows close behind with 14,600 workers. AT&T, Toyota, JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Valero Energy, Harland Clarke and Citibank are some of the area’s other major corporate employers.

“San Antonio’s list of large employers is long and diverse,” Perez says. “We do not rely heavily on one area and that is by design. San Antonio has many industries that together keep us a resilient economy. We are fortunate to have many strong industries, and many strong companies with large employee bases.”

Obama carnival barking in North Carolina:

"There is a lot of work that needs to be done in schools and airports. All these things are in need of repair. In North Carolina alone, there are 153 structurally deficient bridges that need to be repaired. Four of them are near here, on or around the Beltline. Why would we wait to act until another bridge falls? All across North Carolina, all across the country, there are schools with leaking ceilings and lousy heating; ventilation so poor it can make students sick. How can we expect our kids to do their best in places like that?"

What about the pot-holes Barry? Those are dangerous too. And with many roads, the lines need to be repainted, that makes them really unsafe, those roads really should be closed. And little Jimmy tripped and skinned his knee on a school playground, that problem needs to be fixed too.

Totally forgetting everything that happened in the last few days. As I said before ...Pay no attention to the elections behind the curtain. The redheaded woodpecker goes right off topic on every article pushed on this blog and then spews and dribbles into "Ill say what ever I want to say followed by a few remarks that now women in my life would ever say in public. My favorite man of the hour is James Carville (I always liked watching him and his wife discuss)

" Mr. President, your hinge of fate must turn. Bill Clinton fired many people in 1994 and took a lot of heat for it. Reagan fired most of his campaign staff in 1980. Republicans historically fired their own speaker, Newt Gingrich. Bush fired Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. For God's sake, why are we still looking at the same political and economic advisers that got us into this mess? It's not working."

Followed by stating the Democrats are in pure panic mode!

Where's the media?

As far as bankruptcy goes, the federal government is usually first in line to retrieve any assets that's left over after the bankruptcy. However, we find ourselves last in line, even behind hedge fund companies.

Lawmakers say it could possibly be illegal to put tax payer last in line. Also, another law might have been broken, and that is if government continued to loan money knowing full well Solyndra had know way to pay back it.

Obama, still in campagine mode, asking, or telling the government to sign his job bill, NOW.

I think we should think twice before we dive into another stimilus. The total disregard for the taxpayers money is only highlighted but these current events.

In March 2010, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLC conducted an audit on Solyndra and raised questions about its ability to continue operation.

The results of the audit were made public shortly thereafter, and reported on by internet information provider CNET and others.

In May 2010, President Obama visited the Solydra solar panel manufacturing facility and declared that "The true engine of economic growth will always be companies like Solyndra."

Did President Obama know that Solyndra's viability was in doubt when he spoke those words?

If he didn't know, why on earth didn't he?

Now the company is in bankruptcy, with U.S. taxpayers on the hook for $527 million in guaranteed loans, and Solyndra's 1100 employees have joined the ranks of the unemployed.

Why should we trust this Administration to "invest" in private-sector enterprises?

Is this Administration competent enough to be trusted?

What exactly IS Boehner's JOBS plan??

Boehner doesn't have a plan for jobs; he said his plan was for "job creators". You know, the same wealthy people who've made out like bandits during the Obama recovery but don't seem to have put much of those profits back into actually many creating jobs, except overseas in cheap labor markets. But giving them more tax breaks and weakening regulations so the can pollute more should do the trick. Yeah, that's the ticket!

I was a little bit disappointed, but, not the least bit surprised when my two favorite MSDNC comedy shows (Wiffleball and De Rev.) did the Nasty Redhead silent shuffle on Solyndragate last night:

I see many, many, LMAO’s on Solyndragate in my future.

I thought Anna Molly took care of you yesterday. You are just incapable of learning.

Here's your Review of what Anna tried to teach you yesterday (paraphased)

Repeat after me.

The Tea Potty thinks constantly making accusations and drawing horrendous conclusions makes Solyndra look just criminal. I don't see RepubliCons pushing for greater safety regulations for deep water drilling. Ohhh, there is a mining accident that needs to dealt with too.

http://www.oilspillcommission.gov/sites/default/files/documents/FinalReportIntro.pdf

You know we have the newly released BP Horizon report, which seems to find blame most definitely on BP's failure to obey industry standards -- not even government regulations -- for oversight and redundancy in safety systems. Perhaps that's a deflection away from the "BP Horizon report?"

http://www.oilspillcommission.gov/sites/default/files/documents/FinalReportIntro.pdf

Republicans always talk about taking a risk and less government regulation. But, now the "Risky Business" shouldn't be? However, regulations should because it is a Democratic White House. Give Me a Break. I'm not too old to forget Enron, S&L; BILLIONS of dollars LOST ON A SLAB ON A TRUCK IN IRAQ. Neither do I remember all this hula-buh-boo over everything suspect Georgie Boy did.

http://www.infowars.com/bbc-uncovers-23-billion-lost-in-iraq/

Furthermore, this was started under Bush. Solyndra’s chief executive is a registered Republican. And the Walton family, hardly flaming liberals, have invested in the company. That's right; there was a republican.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/toddwoody/2011/09/14/why-china-and-europe-dont-have-a-solyndra-problem/

Republicans and the Tea-Potty are a bunch of corrupt; contradictory, hypocrites.

Perhaps, the Tea Potty are making so much out of Solyndra so they can deflect attention from THAT report.

It would be tempting if the media would shine a light on that though. Nah, not a chance; there's too much Koch and Murdoch money to keep it in the dark for a while.

Do try and keep up.

It said the previous partial shutdown forced by the Senate Republicans a few months ago cost tax payers $400 million dollars. Now that the Republicans are investigating the $500 million cost of the Solyndra fiasco, maybe they should investigate themselves while they're at it to determine why they foolishly squandered nearly the same amount of money in a few weeks as Solyndra cost in two years.

I love it as always Fiesty cant stay on topic. Its more of the same, the chicago democratic machine isnt really a good proxy for national politics. Hey Fiesty, how is your home state doing? You cant blame Illinois on the GOP can you? How does high taxes, pro union, big government, big corruption work for the economy? Which state has the worst balance sheet in the nation? Which state are jobs fleeing like crazy? What democratic governor gave $200 million in tax breaks to keep Caterpillar and Sears in the state (dont hear her complaining about that like Walker)? Oh yeah what state did Obama come from and where did he learn his politics? Who were his mentors here? Besides Wright and Ayers you had Tony "the Fixer" Rezco a really close friend now in jail. You have the Pritzker family right? Come on Fiesty tell how well Obama's policies have worked here in Illinois as a guinea pig for the nation? Lets discuss how Rahm Emmanual made his money after one year in the private sector with Goldman Sachs. $7 million in salary for one years worth of work is pretty good if you can get it dont you think. I am sure he delivered every penny of value. Bill Daly just is part of that long line of Illinois politics.

When's Harry bringing it to the floor of the Senate, John B?

After it passes out of committee and assuming Republicans don't filibuster it as they did 400 times in the last Congress. As a regular here I'd think you'd know that. Since your remarks imply the bill doesn't have Senator Reid's approval, however, it's worthy of correction;

The uncertainty of this summer – a fight over whether to default on our financial obligations and a shocking credit downgrade – has rocked an economy that was already shaking. But this fall – and this legislation – offers us an opportunity to set the American economy back on the right track.

I look forward to studying the President’s bill. The Senate will begin debate on this proposal as soon as possible.

I know not every part of the President’s legislation will be supported by every member of my caucus. Nor will every Republican love every idea the President described last night.

But I look forward to an open, honest and respectful debate.

I hope my Republican colleagues will contribute constructively to this process in the coming weeks, rather than resorting to the obstructionist tactics that have caused gridlock for the last eight months.

Harry and his Democratic majority don't care about the filibuster anymore, John B.

Their hypocrisy on the subject was exposed when they declined to make any serious changes to the Senate's cloture and filibuster rules at the inception of the 112th Congress last January.

It's almost as though the Senate Majority Leader (his majority, too) suspects he'll soon become the Senate Minority Leader, and is suddenly concerned with the rights of the Senate minority.

Stunning hypocrisy, John B. Breathtaking, really.

A $38.6 billion loan guarantee program that the Obama administration promised would create or save 65,000 jobs has created just a few thousand jobs two years after it began, government records show.

The program — designed to jump-start the nation's clean technology industry by giving energy companies access to low-cost, government-backed loans — has directly created 3,545 new, permanent jobs after giving out almost half the allocated amount, according to Energy Department tallies.

President Obama has made "green jobs" a showcase of his recovery plan, vowing to foster new jobs, new technologies and more competitive American industries. But the loan guarantee program came under scrutiny Wednesday from Republicans and Democrats at a House oversight committee hearing about the collapse of Solyndra, a solar-panel maker whose closure could leave taxpayers on the hook for as much as $527 million.

The GOP lawmakers accused the administration of rushing approval of a guarantee of the firm's project and failing to adequately vet it. "My goodness. We should be reviewing every one of these loan guarantee" projects, said Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.).

Obama's efforts to create green jobs are lagging behind expectations at a time of persistently high unemployment. Many economists say that because alternative- energy projects are so expensive and slow to ramp up, they are not the most efficient way to stimulate the economy.

"There are good reasons to create green jobs, but they have more to do with green than with jobs,"
Princeton University economics professor and former Federal Reserve vice chairman Alan Blinder has said.

The Obama Administration spent nearly half of the $38.6 billion ($17.2 billion) set aside for his green energy programs and was only able to create 3,545 permanent green jobs.
This comes out to a staggering $4,853,000 per job !!

And you really wonder why the US economy was downgraded?

With leadership like this.

Obama should be in jail for wasting tax payer money like this.

Anyone but Obama 2012

Also, the bottom line is NET jobs. You can create all you want, but if you are losing way many more than are being created well it is a LOSS.

MB: Harry and his Democratic majority don't care about the filibuster anymore, John B

Obama's "Jobs" bill won't be filibustered. It won't even get 40 Senators to vote for it.

And it won't be going to any committee John B. There is no time for that because Obama is out their shouting "Pass the bill!!", so the plan of Obama's would seem to be non-negotiable. So astraight up/down vote will quickly dispose of Obama's feeble attempt at legislating.

Matter of fact, now that I think of it, the FBI IS investigating this matter (raiding exec homes, reading WH emails, standing guard outside Solyndra HQ, etc). Hmmm. Interesting. Very interesting.

I had NOOO idea that the FBI was in on the "right wing conspiracy" too!!

So you're admitting that there's reason to worry Bev.

Because that's what a stall tactic is, "to postpone worry".

So the right wing is trying to distract people from worrying about Obama and his failures?

I don't think so, but there is still reason to worry about the disaster named Obama.

How about Jay Carney when asked if President Obama knew about Solyndra, he said the President had no knowledge of Solyndra's. And of course he and Holder had no knowledge of fast and furious. For a president this guy doesn't know much about what is going unless it has to do with reelection. Touts the company as the future and the white House tries to tell the american people that the president knew nothing.

Feisty you want an investigation into Bush/Cheney for war crimes. Will not happen because it leaves a very large door for an investigation into Obama/Biden for their acts of violence with innocent people getting killed by drone attacks and other activities that generally come to light after the next administration leaves.

If you are talking enhanced interrogation, Pelosi and others will also be indicted. Intelligence committees knew of the enhanced interrogation despite her sloppy attempt to say that the CIA was lying, even Leon Panetta said she knew. You know Leon right Director CIA, Secretary of Defense and President Clinton's Chief of Staff, Director of the OMB and a member of the House of Representatives. Who would you believe is telling the truth Panetta or Pelosi?

President Obama's jobs act will not even pass because Democrats are against it as evidenced by the article on first read yesterday. If democrats don't like it who will the American people blame. My guess the President.

SOTB: I might also ask... WHERE IS HARRY REID'S JOBS PLAN?

Why do the dems always point the finger at Boehner and ask where is his fill-in-the-blank plan?

It's the president's job to come up with those plans and lead us out of this mess. Yet there they (dems) are pointing at Boehner. I say we point at Reid and ask the same questions!

I would have thought all of you constitutional experts on the right would know the answer to this.

The Presiedent proposes legislation, which he has done. The House, that would be Boehner, who is in charge, drafts legislation and votes on it. Boehner has not done this. Then and only then does the Senate get to vote on it. Following that, the House and Senate resolve their differences. And final approval is by the Presidents signature.

It's called checks and balances. And basic civics.

You would think that those on the right, who claim to be such strict constitutionalists, would be better informed. Not knowing these basic precepts says a lot about the right's capacity to understand government.

Yep, those tax cuts were a bad idea. You need to explain that to this idiot:

“First of all, he’s right. Normally, you don’t raise taxes in a recession, which is why we haven’t and why we’ve instead cut taxes. So I guess what I’d say to Scott is – his economics are right. You don’t raise taxes in a recession. We haven’t raised taxes in a recession.” – President Obama, 2009

THE PRESIDENT: I love you back. But first -- but if you love me -- if you love me, you got to help me pass this bill. If you love me, you got to help me pass this bill. It starts with your help. Democrats and Republicans have supported every kind of proposal that’s in the American Jobs Act in the past. Well, we got to tell them, support it now. That’s where you come in.

Already, you’ve got some Republicans in Washington who have said that some of this stuff may have to wait until the next election.

AUDIENCE: Booo!

THE PRESIDENT: And said maybe we can just kick our problems down the road and stretch this thing out rather than work together right now. Some of them were even quoted as saying even if they agreed with some of the things in this bill, that they don’t want to pass it because it would give me a win.

AUDIENCE: Booo!

THE PRESIDENT: Give me a win? Give me a break! (Laughter.) That’s exactly why folks are fed up with Washington. This isn’t about me. This isn’t about giving me a win. This isn’t about giving Democrats or Republicans a win. It’s not about positioning for the election. It’s about giving the American people a win.

"Sure is a lot of yammering from the RWNJ's about a special prosecutor on the Solyndra *gasp* scandal..." - Feisty Redhead Roselle, IL

You're right Fiesty, that's SOOOOOOO yesterday. Today it's about the Obama administration, LightSquared and it's primary funder and huge Democratic and Obama donor Philip Falcone, and Air Force General William Shelton.

You see the Obama administration pressured Gen. Shelton to alter his testimony regarding a permit that Mr. Falcone's company, LightSquared, had applied for. The reason the General was asked to testify at the permit hearing is because the broadband frequency that Pres. Obama's large donor was applying for would interfere with the US military's GPS capabilities, likely rendering those capabilities useless. In spite of the national security issue, the Obama administration pushed General Shelton -- who was set to testify against granting the permit -- into changing that testimony to the benefit of his political crony.

So Feisty, I'll try to make sure the other conservatives keep more up to date on the latest Obama cronyism.

"And that's the way it is"......this week.

Last Friday, Speaker Boehner said he is open to President Obama's American Jobs Plan, it "has merit and is worth consideration." This week, not so much, it is a "poor substitute" for the GOPTP's trickle down version. They're complaining that Obama's "tone wasn't nice" ignoring the fact that the collective tone for 32 months has been to threaten and take America hostage rather than compromise and do something to help fix the economy.

Michele Bachmann said President Obama's speech last Thursday "insulted" members of Congress. Wrong, the insult to Americans is that it was necessary for our President to remind the GOPTP in Congress that they were elected to work for all Americans who pay their salary instead of working to win the next election and doing nothing to help improve the economy and the lives of the citizens who hired them.

An anonymous GOPTP staffer said "even though we agree with a lot of the jobs bill, they should not pass it because it would give President Obama a win." And there we have it folks, the truth about the GOPTP Congress in one sentence--to hell with the country, it is all about winning.

Mitt Romney declared the AJP is 960 days too late and in the next sentence said the first jobs plan created no jobs. Can't have it both ways, Mitt, no matter how hard you try.

Rick Perry continues trying to un-write his book 'Fed Up'; now social security just needs to transition. Of course, he failed to explain, and no one asked--transition to what?

Dakota Myer, a Marine from Columbia, KY, received the Medal of Honor; the first living Marine since the middle east wars began. Lest we forget. Everyday less than one percent of Americans place their lives on the line. Never have so few given so much for a country that seems to not notice we are still fighting two wars.

The local paper reported that Michele Bachmann plans to focus exclusively on Iowa in the hopes she can win the caucus. That strategy worked well for President Guilliani in Florida, 2008.

During the 9/11 10th anniversary coverage Sunday, we were reminded of the words of President Bush's EPA head, Christine Todd Whitman and those of Rudy Guilliani who declared the air at Ground Zero safe. Anyone with functioning brain cells knew that the air and dust consisted of toxic and carcinogenic particles. Fire and police responders and other workers have paid an additional price in lives and long-term illness for their efforts at "the pile" because two fools said there was no need to take precautions--the air was safe.

Having heard President Obama's American Jobs Plan, FL Governor Rick Scott declared that he would reject the estimated $7.5 billion in funds that would create about 60,000 jobs for Floridians. Nothing like stupid to replace stubborn ideology.

Patti Davis, President Reagan's daughter, commented that todays republicans simply do not "get" who her father was and what he was about; the views they express are not those of her dad; he was a compassionate man who compromised for the good of the country. She's right about that, Reagan would be today's Jon Huntsman, too "liberal" to win the GOPTP nomination.

Governor Niki Haley called journalist Renee Dudley a "little girl". Dudley dared report that Ms. Haley took a $127,000 trip to Europe for jobs, jobs, jobs--first stop, Paris. Haley made no attempt to dispute the reporter's facts; it was easier to imply the reporter was childish and hoped it would go away--it didn't.

Tim Pawlenty endorsed Mitt Romney; Bobby Jindal endorsed Rick Perry. It's the Blue and the Gray all over again.

The GOPTP Congress supports President Obama tax cut portion of the AJP for businesses but not the cuts for the average worker and no increased revenues. They just can't abide by the idea that the 2% wealthiest of individuals and big corporations should pony up to help invest in our crumbling infrastructure which the corporations need to move their products from one place to another. Grover's very proud of them, buttons popping off his shirt.

The Koch Brothers' Tea Party Express and CNN held another GOPTP presidential debate this week. Only Ron Paul seemed to realize that one of Perry's weaknesses is that 170,000 of the jobs he brags he created since 2008, are government jobs.

Perry made sense on immigration, border policy and college tuition--no fence or wall, don't punish the children for the sins of their parents. Interesting, he has railed against President Obama's similar views--shades of Perry's past life as a blue dog democrat? Any bets on a drop in his poll numbers!

Gingrich praised Palin's speech on "crony capitalism", a subject he and most of the other GOPTP candidates know well because they readily participate.

Again this week, this writer was struck by the blood thirsty Tea Party crowd who supported allowing a hypothetical man in a coma without health insurance to just die. "Yeah" they yelled. Ron Paul showed himself to be so ideologically rigid as to be heartless. Wonder if the crowd would yell "yeah" let him die if it was their son or brother or father. What's next to cheer--debtor's prison, execute the infirm, the disabled, the weak, the poor?

Last week Perry called social security a Ponzi scheme; this week it "deserved to be saved for future generations to come." And they call Mitt Romney a flip flopper!

The debate ended with Huntsman saying he'd bring his Harley and Motocross bikes to the White House--the Rose Garden would never be the same. Romney said he'd put a bust of Churchill in his office--guess Reagan would have been too obvious but one wonders if he remembers Churchill was British.

It was reported this week that 1 in 6 Americans is living in poverty. What a sad legacy for this country. The wealthiest 10% have become richer while the other 90% have had their wages decline mostly due to 30 years of Reaganomics ala Bush 43 on steroids.

Monday, the GOPTP Senators filibustered disaster aid for states hit by Hurricane Irene. Senator Reid didn't give up; finally it passed. 38 GOPTP Senators voted NO and said to those states--you're on your own, fix it yourself--compassionate conservatives at their finest.

Ed Rollins, Bachmann's former campaign manager, sidestepped the question if Bachmann should be Commander in Chief by saying "she'll evolve" which begs another question. Why would a savvy campaign strategist accept the job if he/she did not believe that candidate should be President?

The GOPTP House wants to eliminate any President's ability to designate places in the USA as National Monuments. They've moved so far right, even Teddy Roosevelt wouldn't be acceptable as a conservative.

Bob Casey, blue dog democrat, said President Obama's AJP is too long. Seriously? Too long? The most effective economic plan is to propose lots of diverse ideas so that it has broad appeal and targets many aspects of the economy. Senator Casey and his fellow blue dogs should know that. Are they just cowards, afraid of doing something big, or playing games and looking to their own next election?

Anthony Weiner's NY9 district went republican this week. The media immediately pronounced it a referendum on President Obama, a window into democratic doom in Nov 2012. Wonder why the media--when another NY district went from red to blue this year--did not pronounce it a window into GOPTP gloom and doom in Nov 2012. That darn liberal media bias!

Turns out that since 2000, Governor Rick Perry has added 287,400 Government jobs in Texas. Proof of the false narratives the GOPTP candidates sell to the naive who take their word for it--government can't create jobs and government jobs are evil is what they say.

Elizabeth Warren, Massachusetts, announced she will be running for U.S. Senate. Scott Brown's staff already created a negative website to attack her. She's not even the official democratic nominee yet--Brown must be scared spitless. Either that or "pre-emptive strike"runs in the DNA of the GOPTP.

In Pennsylvania, the GOPTP controlled House and Senate along with the Governor are considering legislation that would no longer award all the state's electoral votes to the presidential candidate receiving the statewide popular vote. Nothing like trying to rig things in favor of your side without ever considering it could backfire. What's next from the GOPTP, only count votes for republicans?

Mitt Romney's campaign must still have me listed as a republican despite my efforts to correct them. Wednesday night, via robo survey saying the survey was about the 2012 election. At the end they finally asked if I planned to attend the GOP caucus in 2012, NO. These survey takers could save themselves a lot of trouble if the first question they asked is if the recipient is a registered republican, democrat or independent. No doubt, I'll get another Christmas card from Mitt, too.

Mitch McConnell said President Obama's AJP is not "serious". 1 in 3 bridges in McConnell's state is deficient; one connecting KY to OH was shut down turning a 20 minute commute into two hours but infrastructure spending is not "serious" according to McConnell.

China purchased property in Toledo, Ohio, for $3 million. If US manufacturers won't invest in this country, apparently China will.

Iowa's Senator Tom Harkin will hold his annual steak fry Saturday at the Indianola Balloon Field. This steak fry is a democratic tradition rivaling the GOP Ames Straw Poll only there's no buying of votes. You buy a ticket and get a great steak dinner with all the trimmings. This year Bernie Sanders is one of the speakers.

Food for Thought: "People do not believe lies because they have to, but because they want to." Malcolm Muggeridge, British author and commentator (1903-1990)

Watching the GOPTP debates and hearing the factless comments that received loud applause, it became obvious that rigid, personal ideology or personal views about a president leads to a willingness to believe lies. Whether it is the lie that the 2009 economic stimulus created zero jobs or that President Obama was born in Kenya and is a secret Muslim.

It is one thing for a politician to overstate or understate facts; it is another to flat out disregard them. It is one thing for individuals to believe in a political ideology; another to allow that ideology to control thought and restrict the ability to think for ourselves, to never research for the truth because we want to believe the lies.

Whether it is reporters, pundits, analysts or ordinary people, it is a tragedy for democracy and for our well-being to fail to question what we are told and to call a lie what it is. We only need look at recent history to know the results of failing to question what we are told.

Here's the OTHER way it was this week-

BLS showed that competence in basic arithmetic is lacking throughout this administration. Last week's initial claims for unemployment were adjusted-UP- by 3000; new initial claims numbers were reported at 428,000. Take a wild guess where those numbers will go next week.

The Census Bureau reported the highest level of poverty in the 52 years it's been tracking that level.

The White House dispatched minions to the House to testify that NO ONE knows who okayed the Solyndra loans. Not one person. Nobody has any idea who could have possibly given the go ahead to shell out more than half a billion dollars down a rat hole- but, maybe, it could have been the Bush administration? No? They got turned down? Oh, well, it sure wasn't any of them.

Air Force General Shelton, on the other hand, testified that several particular people in the White House had pressured him to change his testimony regarded Light Squared. Seems the company has a wireless network that works off satellites- that interfere with GPS used by the military and the airlines. This would hit a company owned by a big Obama donor- so Obama's lifelong buddy, (who also, incidentally, is a big donor) who got the job as head of the FCC, okayed the project, over the objections of the Pentagon.

I wonder if the Obama worshippers would like to volunteer to be on flights the day Light Squared goes live. You know, to prove your loyalty. Just let the rest of us know the date, so we can stay home.

In keeping with the love of liberty and free expression, the White House launched ATTACK WATCH- a website and Twitter account that invites people to tattle on anyone who ever says anything mean or nasty about the president. I'm pretty sure JoannaSmith 1, bob, Bob, Mixed Bag, dangerfield, myself, and a few others have been reported by loyal cult members on this site. Some of the tweets have been highly entertaining, I must admit-

One reported having seen six ATMs in an alley- the tweeter thought they were killing a job.

One admitted taking the dear leader's name in vain six times that very day.

One reported himself for having eaten a bean burrito for breakfast- thereby increasing his carbon emissions.

You get the idea.

This level of desperation should tell you all you need to know about Obama's level of paranoia.

On another front, seems Obama is having trouble selling his spending bill. He can only attract crowds at less than half the capacity of the chosen venue. Moreover, he "took it to the American people", first in Virginia. He was going to really hit hard at Eric Cantor.

His approval ratings in Virginia promptly tanked. I can't wait to see how it plays in Ohio, let alone North Carolina.

In two special elections, democrats lost, badly. In NY9, held by the democrat by 20 points last November despite the republican tsunami that swept the nation, a republican political neophyte won by eight points- he campaigned against Obama's spending, healthcare takeover, economic policies, - heck, he might even have thrown in "what kind of moron names a dog after himself?"- but the White House, having lost a district that is 3 to 1 democratic registration, proclaimed it "not a referendum on Obama".

In Nevada, a district with 4 to 1 republican registration, went to the republican by 22 points. The White House blamed low voter turn out.

Axelrod blames Daley. Jarrett blames Summers. Obama blames Bush. None of that matters, because. . .

The electorate blames Obama.

Obama shelved in 2012.

Jody a very good wrap up. I think we all appreciate it and strikes a chord with us, even No Jo.

Again you bring up a lot of topics. The thing I would like to discuss are your thoughts on the merits of revamping or changing the electoral college. Don't want to scrap it which would probably need a constitutional amendment but, I believe it should be a conversation that we as a nation should have. Note althugh some might suggest, I'm not looking at it from a partisan nature. In fact I'm not sure which party who would gain from revising it away from a winner take all format.

It is already in place in some states, delegates are awarded by the districts where the contender wins the popular vote. For example this is how Nebraska and Maine are set up and a vote is counted for the presidential contender that wins that district. Obama actually won one district in "Go Big Red" country of Nebrasksa. Thanks Omaha!

If a shared system was put in place it could have prevented the uncertainty in Florida 2000 and Bush's questionable win. Might have even played a part in Kerry's 2004 race. Perhaps adjusting for a weighted share of delegates is a way to provide a greater voice for us all. Whatever the case it is more democratic and while still not one person one vote at least gives more power to those trapped in Texas or New York. Cycle after cycle states like these will probably never go against the already entrenched partisan surpluses.

I hate how politics only have to campaign/care about swing states. At the expense of the rest of us, it could lead to special deals, promises to the all important swing voters. Also wonder why your state and New Hampshire have such special importance.

John B,

"When you start to look at the big picture there can be no question".

I think one of the key things being exploited here is that we're slow to see what is coming 'down the pipe', over the long term ~ the fallout from actions and directions taken now. Some things are heavily veiled, sugar-coated or denied, but some things are actually right under our noses.

Think it's called 'maladaptive' cultural adaptation....not sure.

Course, if we're not curious or didn't get a good chance at education, it gets easier for us to be controlled and fall prey to crazy ideas and agendas.

Yellowdog. Thank you. My view on the electoral college is simple. It has outlived its purpose and needs to go for general elections. Elections should be determined by the total popular vote. I've held that opinion for decades. From what I have read, it was established because our Founding Fathers did not trust that the population was educated enough so they put in a backup system which allowed the educated to intervene; the same held true for senators who were originally appointed by the elite. It was also supposed to give a bigger voice to states with small populations which, today, makes no sense because the smaller the population, the fewer electoral votes so the influence remains unchanged. I think having electoral votes for primaries is reasonable and makes sense.

I realize that other states have done something similar as PA is contemplating. It just seemed the republicans in PA's actions are purely for political purposes right now. Most of the time, the electoral college is consistent with the popular vote--except most recently in 2000.

I agree, it is a conversation the country needs to have.

Yellowdog and Jody,

Those of us that are Republicans in California would love to see a change to the electoral college process. While voting for a Republican candidate isn't a guaranteed loss, given the very deep blue state that California is, we might as well throw our ballots in the trash. There was a proposal not so long ago that worked somewhat like this:

Each district total represents one vote in the electoral college (House) and each of the Senate members represent one vote. Summarize the voting by district, and assign the electoral votes on the basis of who won the district. Senate goes essentially the same way, but based upon the statewide tally for each candidate. The Senate screws things up a bit, given that Presidential elections and Senate elections don't always mesh, but the principal could be adapted somewhat to reflect the off year elections.

Yellowdog, don't forget that if you apply this process to Florida, you will equally have to apply it to California, Illinois, New York, etc, and the outcome may have changed, but also may not have changed. If I recall correctly, there were Republican majorities in the House in 2000, and in 2004, so under the proposal I recall, it is likely that GW would still have been President in each of those elections.

While you're at it, Jody...

Let's change the U.S. Senate, as well.

Why should Rhode Island or Delaware have as many U.S. Senators as California and New York?

Just curious...

How many presidential elections in our history have produced a result where the winner in the electoral college wasn't the winner of the popular vote? How large was the gap in each of those instances?

Change it. But, watch out for unintended consequences.

Remember how the left howled because the outcome in Florida in 2000 was decided by some 500 votes...out of more than 5.8 million votes cast?

Toss out the paper punch-card ballots!

Spend millions of taxpayer dollars on expensive computerized voting systems instead.

Remember how that worked out?

Remember Diebold?

Those pesky unintended consequences...simply because the outcome of an election was so close that it would have challenged the margin of error for ANY method of counting the votes.

Unintended consequences.

Go for it, Jody.

Congratulations Elizabeth Warren running against Scott Brown. Pretty much a winner for Scott Brown. This excerpt is from Commondreams.org

Big banks are not Warren’s only problem. A poll conducted by a Boston NPR affiliate this month showed Brown leading Warren 44-35 in a potential matchup. Off the record, some Democrats admit that Scott Brown is charismatic, charming and well-liked. He is also well-known for quality constituent work.

One Lindfield resident who has been struggling to get a mortgage modification from Bank of America for years has gotten some helpful assistance from Scott Brown’s office. “I like everything I know about Scott Brown, I may not know the whole story, but I like the progress he has made as a Senator and I like that he just went to Afghanistan,” said George Mahoney.

Even democrats like his work.

According to Obama's political adviser, David Axelrod, Obama's plan is non-negotiable. So Obama is expecting that the House and Senate will pass the bill as is. No committee work. No amendments. With that, it doesn't matter whether the House votes first, or the Senate.

I see johnB is holding on to his nearly unblemished attempt at maintaining the top spot of the libs-r-us SIASD hall of fame in his post 2.7. Amazing on how he never quite has been able to prove what he claims. It indeed will be a sad day for America if the majority believes his dribble.

Liars, cheats and criminals indeed! I do wonder why poor johnb has such a negative attitude on the future of America. Perhaps he listened to S&P saying that if the US can't get their fiscal act together, another downgrade is possible..

Standard & Poor's managing director John Chambers said on Sunday there is a one in three chance of a further U.S. credit rating downgrade over the next six months to two years.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44050983/ns/business-stocks_and_economy/t/sp-exec-another-downgrade-us-possible/

Interesting that we appear to have a three way split on how best to create jobs and fix the economy, perhaps the best resolution would be to vote out obama and all others up for re-election in 2012.

I see that johnb also likes to mislead and misinform along with the best of FR libs. Leaving out the rest of the story (post 2.11)...

Though most Americans disapprove of both parties in Congress, they disapprove of Republicans more. Seventy-two percent of Americans disapprove of the job Republicans in Congress are doing, compared to 63 percent who disapprove of the Democrats in Congress (From his link).

Not exactly a rousing endorsement for the left either.

Regardless, other polls have Americans increasing their percentages in saying that they believe America is heading in the wrong direction. Used to be in the 60% range, now it has moved into the 70% range. Rather telling on how obama just can't quite get the hang of uniting congress or Americans on moving forward. Perhaps that is no longer the main job function of an effective POTUS.

If you want value from ANY posting I wouldnt hold my breath if I were you. If I seek value in comments, I will talk to people directly, face to face, eye to eye. I would be willing to bet the farm and a brand new shiny dime that there isnt one person on ANY of these public forums, myself included, that wouldn't have a different approach to thier beliefs with people if they had to do it in a face to face forum. I come out here to let the bloggers know that people are wise to their tactics, and they are no more credible than the lobbyists that plague Washington. I will keep posting what I want and nobody will stop me. I guess that shows me being sanctimonious also?

Jody: Thanks for the laugh! Of course, your last paragraph pretty much sums up the way to take the rest of your post. Enjoy the BS.

It's nice to play little diversionary games. But, the simple fact is that there is nothing in Obama's slush fund bill that creates any jobs. Absolutely nothing! If you or any other libs believe there is, then please spell it out. We are anxiously awaiting.

Looking at history, Democrat presidents have always had problems with their own Party in congress. Why? because progressives by nature are not lock-in-step rubber stampers like Republicans, not to mention a few Blue Dogs out there who should change their party affiliation to Republican. But certainly the White House needs to improve relations with congress--and I'm not talking about the uncompromising Teapublican Party of No--but with the Dems, who need to get behind a jobs plan. Make it better if they can, but get behind it.

To Living in LA -- Try being a Democrat who lives somewhere like Utah and tell us if they feel their votes count. The Electoral College is there to protect the nation from ignoramuses, which appear to be increasing thanks to the Tea Party. And the way it is structured in places like Pennsylvania needs to be left alone. As Feisty says, the GOP/TP philosophy is "if you cant beat, cheat em." Enough!

What part of tax breaks for small businesses and individuals, keeping teachers on the job, employing construction workers to build important infrastructure investment for the future, and keeping those still unemployed engaged in the economy is hard to understand? http://www.americanjobsact.com/

It's the Conservative plan to magically create demand by further increasing surplus capacity and capitalization that's beyond understanding.

John B: What part of reduced payroll tax rates for employers and employees will prompt private employers to hire more employees? What part of federal money paying for state and local governmental expenses of local governmental union employees will encourage private employers to hire more employees? What part of the wasted $800 billion for "shovel ready jobs" inspires you to believe that this time, it will be different and the money will actually be used to hire private contractors to improve infrastructure? What part of increasing unemployment benefits from, a traditional 26 weeks (1/2 year) to 3 years will encourage private employers to hire more employees?

One would think that spending "stimulus" money to create more employment would have actually created some jobs. Considering that the "stimulus" set aside more money for the purpose of creating jobs, one would think that some jobs would have been created. After all, it was more money than we spend on the military. At least the military does provide a valuable, Constitutionally permissible function. And, they actually hire people. So far, all Obama has provided is increase debt, no jobs and lower credit rating, which increases the cost of borrowing.

    I just explained it, and naturally you came back with a collection of empty Conservative talking points instead of a solution from the Right...because the Right HAS no solution...nothing whatsoever after running an entire campaign based on improving the jobs picture. As such you're probably a lost cause, but just in case you'd like to study what actual economists know to be the case instead of what Glenn Beck claims;

In this paper, we use the Moody’s Analytics model of the U.S. economy—adjusted to accommodate some recent financial-market policies—to simulate the macroeconomic effects of the government’s total policy response. We find that its effects on real GDP, jobs, and inflation are huge, and probably averted what could have been called Great Depression 2.0. For example, we estimate that, without the government’s response, GDP in 2010 would be about 11.5% lower, payroll employment would be less by some 8½ million jobs, and the nation would now be experiencing deflation.

    http://www.economy.com/mark-zandi/documents/End-of-Great-Recession.pdf

    College drop out Sean Hannity may disagree, but actual Nobel Prize winners realize that the only problem with the original stimulus was the insistence of Conservatives that it be smaller than needed;

Those of us who say that the stimulus was too small are often accused of after-the-fact rationalization: you said this would work, but now that it hasn’t, you’re just saying it wasn’t big enough. The quick answer to that accusation is that people like me said that the stimulus was too small in advance. But the longer answer is that it’s all in the math: Keynesian analysis provides numbers as well as qualitative predictions, and given reasonable projections of the economy’s path in January 2009, the proposed stimulus just wasn’t big enough. Let’s go back to the tape, January 9, 2009:

Even the C.B.O. says, however, that “economic output over the next two years will average 6.8 percent below its potential.” This translates into $2.1 trillion of lost production. “Our economy could fall $1 trillion short of its full capacity,” declared Mr. Obama on Thursday. Well, he was actually understating things.

To close a gap of more than $2 trillion — possibly a lot more, if the budget office projections turn out to be too optimistic — Mr. Obama offers a $775 billion plan. And that’s not enough.

Now, fiscal stimulus can sometimes have a “multiplier” effect: In addition to the direct effects of, say, investment in infrastructure on demand, there can be a further indirect effect as higher incomes lead to higher consumer spending. Standard estimates suggest that a dollar of public spending raises G.D.P. by around $1.50.

But only about 60 percent of the Obama plan consists of public spending. The rest consists of tax cuts — and many economists are skeptical about how much these tax cuts, especially the tax breaks for business, will actually do to boost spending. (A number of Senate Democrats apparently share these doubts.) Howard Gleckman of the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center summed it up in the title of a recent blog posting: “lots of buck, not much bang.”

The bottom line is that the Obama plan is unlikely to close more than half of the looming output gap, and could easily end up doing less than a third of the job.

In practice, it was even worse, because one of the key elements of the plan — aid to state and local governments — was cut back sharply in the Senate. We ended up with only about $600 billion of real stimulus over that two-year period.

So this wasn’t a test of fiscal stimulus, even though it has played out that way in the political arena: the whole thing was obviously underpowered from the start.

I had to laugh when I read:

If you look at the last 4 years, seems Harry and Nancy had their comrades in lock-step 24/7. It was only after their plans failed, Nancy lost her leader gig, Obama kept attacking and not solving a darn thing that the dems saw the writing on the wall.

They have no problem throwing each other or Obama under the bus if it means they will get re-elected.

And anyone trying to spin the monstrous Republican Catholic upset of the Democrat Jewish candidate with a 70 year history of voting democrat in NY9, while spending 13x what the Republican spent, well he/she is just dim.

          "I just explained it..."

And that is your idea of an explanation? No wonder we are in such a mess. Until the libs are out of office, there is no chance of getting things done that will actually improve the economy. Calling them "talking points" does nothing to add to the conversation. The reason that these "talking points" keep coming up is that libs refuse to answer. You are a perfect case in point. Of course, we know why these kinds of questions are never answered. There aren't any true answers that can be given. Even libs realize that there is no incentive to hire employees just because an employee's or employer's SS contribution is reduced from 6.2% down to 4.2%.

As for your articles, they are typical neo-Keynesisan gobble-gook. Keynes just added government spending on top of private sector spending and said "see, everything is much better now!" The problem is that it assumes that there are no consequences for the economy from just printing more money. And, everyone knows that's not the case. Just shifting money around does nothing to grow the economy either. You must have missed your lessons on the Great Depression. The government threw money after money and, as a result, the depression just kept going on and on. Even the liberal CBO recognized this. They, surprisingly were honest in their assessment about the stimulus bill. They said that it may give an initial boost, but that the long term effect would mean that it would take longer to recover. Bingo! That's why we are still in a recession.

            #2.65 - Sat Sep 17, 2011 11:04 AM EDT

Part of the American Jobs Act would give employers thousands in cash for hiring military returning from tours of duty, and for hiring "long term unemployed". This is an idea overdue and makes a lot of sense considering you'd otherwise be paying the same money for unemployment checks.

I don't think it is the right time for publicly funded "infrastructure projects", because the proposed funding would be to borrow against the future. I think there has been enough borrowing, we're all borrowed out. The result is always short term and temporary.

During the Great Depression workmen could be loaded into trucks at souplines and delivered to the Hoover Dam site, and would work for a blanket and three square meals. Davis-Bacon guarantees workmen in Obama's Depression 'the prevailing wage rate'. Let's just call it an average of $60/hr including benefits.

I think emphasis right now should be reducing spending, and not adding borrowing or printing money that might help Greece stay afloat another 6 months but cuts the value of the American dollar in half. Every country in the world needs austerity right now. The answer for Greece, and everybody else, is to "buck up" right now, not in 6 more months.

What if every single person and business in the U.S. would write a check for 1% of their adjusted gross income to be applied to first the Deficit, then the Debt? No Cronyism. What if an Amendment be reached prohibiting the Fed, the Treasury, and the President from writing a check to anybody outside of the borders of the United States without prior approval of both House and Senate?

Oh, you've gone FULL John Birch Society, even to the extent of denying that the New Deal ended the Great Depression. The economy was growing rapidly from it's long term, Laissez-Faire collapse until Conservatives convinced Roosevelt to pull the stimulus while the recovery was still weak. The result? The recession of 1937. THAT is why the Depression went on and on. Three years of waiting for the economy to self-correct under Hoover, then aborting things that were working far too soon.

The basic economic facts from the 1930s—according to the Department of Commerce, the Federal Reserve, and other official sources—are fundamentally different from the unsupported claims put forward by Shlaes and prominent in popular myth. The monthly data for industrial production show a near three-year collapse under President Hoover, ending when FDR came to office in March 1933. Production rocketed by 44 percent in the first three months of the New Deal and, by December 1936, had completely recovered to surpass its 1929 peak.

GDP, only available as annual averages, plunged 25.6 percent from 1929-1932, including by 13.0 percent in 1932. It stabilized in 1933, and then soared by 10.8 percent, 8.9 percent and 12.0 percent, respectively, in 1934, 1935 and 1936. Real GDP surpassed its 1929 peak in 1936 and never again fell below it. After-tax personal income, consumer spending, real private investment and jobs all reached or surpassed their 1929 peaks by late 1936.

In fact, like every decade between 1850 and 1990, the 1930s suffered two distinct downturns. The official U.S. Business Cycle Dating Committee established that the downturn that began in August 1929 ended in March 1933 with the remarkable economic expansion that started within days of FDR’s bold—if trial and error—New Deal programs. By any normal definition, the Great Depression had ended by late 1936, with all major indicators surpassing their previous peaks.

A second cyclical downturn officially began in May 1937 when FDR, always a fiscal conservative, mistakenly thought the economy had become self-sustaining and slashed public spending programs to balance the budget. These harsh and premature spending cuts caused another severe recession that ended after 13 months in June 1938.

Even in this severe downturn, annual GDP did not fall back below its 1929 peak. And although many suffered and most economic measures did fall back below their 1929 levels, not one fell anywhere close to its March 1933 low. For example, although industrial production fell sharply in the 1937-38 recession, at its low point, in April 1938, it remained 49 percent above its level of March 1933.

When the economy again contracted sharply in late 1937 and early 1938, FDR quickly reversed course and rapid growth immediately began again. GDP soared by 10.9 percent in 1939 and industrial production soared by 23 percent.

              http://www.ourfuture.org/blog-entry/2009020603/fdr-failed-myth

You STILL have NO ANSWER regarding how Supply Side economics will create demand in an economy where there is none. I've chased you down the rabbit hole to reveal that there's nothing there. It's all in your imagination. There's no point in continuing a discussion with someone who has no idea how the economy works and only argues by saying "no it doesn't." Goodbye.

Scott: I think you miss part of the point. If an employer is planning on hiring, they may hire a vet or an unemployed over someone of equal talent. But, they are not going to spend the cost of hiring a full time employee just to get a fraction of that back from the government. As to hiring the long-term unemployed, I doubt that that will be a question that will readily come up in a job interview. If it does, the question is more likely to be "why have you been unemployed for so long, in other words, what is it about you that I should worry about if I hire you?" But, I do agree that cutting federal spending should be the emphasis. When one looks at all the spending that's been going on, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that a heck of a lot of it is wasted pork. Heck, all we have to do is go back 3 years to the programs that existed then and we would cut the budget by 25%. You can't tell me that doing that would work a real hardship on anyone, except those receiving the pork. We got along just fine before then.

Mr. Boehner to say that I’m disappointed is an understatement. I was looking for you’ll to come up with a proposal for how you’re going to finally start creating these Jobs that you and you’re Republican/T.P buddies ran on.

                Where is it?

All I’m hearing from you’ll is the same old empty rhetoric. A lot of statements that were not meant to be factual. We all know what you’re against. Anything the President proposes. By extension anything that gets you’ll off the dime and coming up with proposalals to move We the People forward instead of the status quo.

Come on Mr. Speaker. Do your job. Put it on paper. Get it out there in front of God and everybody and let’s discuss it. Enough of the empty promises and symbolic votes.

Lead, follow or get out of the way but for God’s sake do something or is that too much to ask.

                @1Hiram

You obviously have a case of Short Term Memory loss as well as a penchant for Historical Rewriting. Boehner's call to America last election was "Give us the House and we will create Jobs". And just like the remainder of the Republican's elected we found out it was all a "Bait and Switch" as the only thing the Republicans elected to the House of Representatives and State Governorship's have created are additional unemployment, elimination of Collective Bargaining, attacks on Planned Parenthood funding and enacting their favorite legislation; Tax Breaks for businesses and corporations.

                @Night-1021999

That ole "Republicans have proposed Job Creation Bills" lie and the subsequent list of bills you posted that were passed by the House of Ideologues has been debunk every time you GOP/TP'ers put it up.

Not one of those bills deals with JOB CREATION, but they do and will ELIMINATE JOBS.

I am not sure if you have ever looked up any of the bills you list, but with the exception of some oil and gas jobs in the Gulf, none of what you have cut and pasted will produce the number of jobs we need. The sad fact is the Rupublicans have taken certain oaths to outside intrests and/or have been bought off that will prevent them from doing anything to help the current situation. They won the last election by blaming the Democrats and saying they knew how and what to do to create jobs. To date, they have not let the rest of know what that was. What are they going to say in 2012?

House Minority Leader John Boehner laid out the GOP’s “closing argument” in the Republicans’ quest for a House majority while addressing a campaign rally this afternoon at a small family-owned manufacturing plant in West Chester, Ohio.

“This speech is about jobs…because this coming election is about jobs,” Boehner told the welcoming campaign crowd in his home town.

BTW - regarding jobs, why have we not heard anything from obama on his special business leader commision on what business is looking for to create more jobs?

Seems that you can't even justify your comments to night-102...

                Job destroyers????

H.R. 872, the Reducing Regulatory Burdens Act, and yet even obama has said that his administration has found, what?, over 500 regulations that could stifle job growth.

H.R. 910, the Energy Tax Prevention Act, allowing more taxes is a good thing? Bet the majority of American taxpayers just love paying out more in taxes. Shouldn't the idea of having consumers have more discretionary income to spend have a positive affect on job creation?

H.J.Res. 37, a Resolution of disapproval regarding the FCC’s regulation of the Internet and broadband industry practices...while not a bill, doesn't increased regulations mean a higher level of federal employment to enforce the regs and the need of business to hire employees to see that the business complies.

H.R. 1230, Restarting American Offshore Leasing Now Act and H.R. 1229, Putting the Gulf of Mexico Back to Work Act... job destroyers, how so?

well sayitain'tso seems that you can't even argue a point without being debunked yourself.

Tell me exactly what the Democrats have to offer after 4 years in charge and 2 years of Obama spending trillions? TELL ME! You got nothing done, Obama has failed spectacularly, and now even HARRY REID won't tell us when a vote is scheduled, because he knows that the Democrats are 100% toast should they pass this con-job and it fails as it would.

Harry doesn't want to touch the Obama-con with a 10' pole.

Deregulation is needed - or did you miss the 4,200 new regulations that Obama has already rammed down businesses throats in the past 2.5 years? Obama and the democrats are destroying our nation with their con-man rhetoric and the unending attack on the job creators.

Lack of demand is the problem? NO - UNEMPLOYMENT is the problem. There are plenty of consumers who want to consume. The one's who have money are afraid of the insanity that is DC. Those of us who lost their jobs or took substantial cuts in our income are spending less.

The only fix is for government to get the hell out of the way, with PERMANENTLY lower taxes, rules that don't change from year to year, as they are the impediment to job growth. Government cannot grow jobs through new debt - and that IS the Obama plan. Obama wants more debt to employ government and union workers, as they are his voters. This is not a complex plan, it is 100% political, and it is disgusting.

                The democrats have completely failed.

                Feel free to spin away.

How are businesses setting record profits under the "crushing burden" of over-regulation? Yes, UNEMPLOYMENT is creating a lack of demand...see how that works?

There is no demand. Because the economy is already in oversupply businesses are stuffing their record profits in the bank and are sitting on over $3T in capital...and rising. The "job creators" already pay a lower effective tax rate than the middle class. Previous tax cuts failed to prevent slow growth and the biggest economic crash since the Hoover Depression.

And the best Conservatives can come up with is more of the same. We arrived at this point through 30 years of Supply Side economics and deregulation, slow growth, rising debt, constant economic bubbles, all of it.

You've still provided no answers of how continuing down the same path prevents more of the same. You've only thrown out Conservative attacks against the Obama Administration and mindless Ayn Rand-influenced econo-babble. Where are the solutions?

He will be the first President in History to have NEGATIVE job growth over a 4 year term........another first for Obama.............please hurry 2012 !!!!!

Like a broken record you've once again repeated the Conservative mantra that somehow increasing capitalization that's already at record levels and supply that's already at oversupply will result in demand. It's like claiming that we'll be able to see if only we turn off all the lights.

                  Where's the logic in that?

As the wailing and gnashing of teeth about Solyndra continues from the GOP, I posed the following question yesterday:

Are the shenanigans that the Conservatives are accusing the White House and Solyndra of committing enough for them to see why the Citizens United decision by the SCOTUS was such a bad idea?

I'm going to leave that question out here this morning because I want to see if anyone is smart enough to figure out the answer. Anybody want to take a stab at an answer?

I doubt that you'll get an affirmative from Conservatives on that one, DN. The GOPTP will NEVER admit that Citizens United is actually legalized bribery because they can't win without massive piles of money they get from those bribes. The Republican Party is corrupt to an extent that will only be fully appreciated in a historical context.

I will, however, remind you that our money was given to Solyndra BEFORE Citizens United.

And that the two are as unrelated as a pancake is to a unicorn.

Still, it is amazing that Obama worshippers have such gyrations of imagination in their attempts at excusing any egregious conduct- no matter what the costs to the taxpayers.

                  "no joe"

"Bob" said yesterday that Citizens United and Solyndra were unrelated. He was wrong yesterday. Likewise, you are wrong today.

...and trust me, this has nothing to do with the timeline of either Solyndra's campaign donations related to the Citizens United decision.

The irony, "no joe", is that it is your rantings yesterday that most clearly demonstrate my point:

                  First...

What is needed now is a special prosecutor, to look into ALL of the monies that flowed from the taxpayers into Obama donors' pockets- most often, tenfold in payback what they donated to Obama.

This is corruption that rivals Teapot Dome.

                  ...then...

                  Then focus on this, Mark

So, the White House pressured an Air Force General to alter his testimony that a wireless network owned by one of their big donors interfered with military GPS.

                  ...and then...

Do yourself a favor- go to iWatch, and read all about the Obama donors who got tenfold in taxpayer dollars what they put in to Obama's campaign coffers.

He's not just an inept failure, he's corrupt to his core.

Do any of those statements that you made ring a bell?

Now, given those hints, do you see what I'm getting at?

Ducking the question, I see. Will you join Democrats in our effort to fix the legalized bribery of Citizens United? If large donations are able to produce favorable results from government, wouldn't it be true that that is even more likely when donations are anonymous, as they can be under Citizens United?

The only way the two are unrelated is if you accept the premise that anonymous money is somehow does less to manipulate the process than does money given publicly. It's a ridiculous, illogical assumption.

Will you join me in a call to reintroduce and pass the DISCLOSE Act, blocked by Republicans in the last Congress?

The Republicans wasted almost as much money ($400) shutting down the FAA a while back for no good reason other than dirty politics as the cost of the Solyndra bankruptcy to taxpayers. No surprise there.

These donations were given to Obama in 2008. The funds went out the door before the Citizens United decision.

                  They are completely, totally unrelated.

But just keep drugging yourself with the idea that Obama's corruption is the fault of the Supreme Court. I guess it helps you sleep at night.

There is ZERO evidence of any corruptions whatsoever. Politicians have been giving favors to benefactors for centuries. In the present environment, no politician will last very long if he doesn't. You're just singling out Obama because you hate him no matter what he does. If you REALLY wanted to eliminate the influence of money on elections, you'd be in favor of publicly financed campaigns, which of course, you're not. Are you?

John, President Carter was saying on the Maddow show yesterday that when he ran against Ford and Reagan, they did zero campaigning for funds. Citizens just ticked a box on their tax refunds, showing they agreed to spend $2 or $3 towards campaign funding. And that was it.

While nowadays, the President has to spend time on the road and bring in cash, as if a dramatic 21st century world wasn't giving him enough to do. Today, each of the Presidential hopefuls has $1Billion in the pot, so far.

Carter said that all the candidates were very civil to each other. It was a given. The gross era of tearing down reputations and $multimillions on attack ads had not yet begun. He said things were negative once in a while, but that Obama has to deal with right wing obstruction and non-support 24/7.

I don't think Carter could imagine what that must be like for our current President Obama, or if even any of us can. That takes a special kind of gumption and personal qualities I ain't seen before.

When you start out from a position of disrespect for the other person and their beliefs, there is little chance of ever finding anything to agree on except "Your guys stink", and the level of debate seldom elevates beyond that point. The DISCLOSE Act was not supported by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU),[20] their usual ally in campaign finance reform.

Following the Court’s ruling, President Barack Obama expressed disapproval in his 2010 State of the Union Address, stating that American elections should not be controlled by America’s most powerful interests. Rather, they should be decided by the American people. He urged Democrats and Republicans to unite behind legislation to correct this problem.[3]

I don't see the President or democrats turning down union money, so I guess it is okay to be controlled by the unions.

The bill, as introduced, included banning U.S. corporations controlled by foreign governments from influencing election outcomes through the use of campaign contributions; preventing Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) recipients from making political contributions; giving shareholders, organization members, and the general public access to information regarding corporate and interest group campaign expenditures; and creating transparency mechanisms for organizations with more than 500,000 members to stand by political ads.[1]

So I guess that since those who receive TARP money under the Disclose Act cannot contribute to political campaigns all that union money from Chrysler and GM and Lehman Brothers as well as cannot go to President Obama's campaign or anyone else's republican or democrat. I'm okay with that.

But it seems that there was a special carve-out in the bill which prevented the Senate from passing the bill and caused others to remove support.

The Public Interest Research Group (U.S. PIRG) supported the introduction of the DISCLOSE Act, but withheld its support when special interest exemptions were provided. However, it has continues to maintain its support for future Senate action.[15] In addition, the U.S. PIRG started the campaign “Stop the Corporate Takeover of Democracy,” which is an on-going effort to educate voters on the negative contributions that corporations and labor unions can have on the election process, through a lack of disclosure and transparency.[16]

Jesse Zwick wrote in the Washington Independent explaining why Republicans, who have historically favored transparency initiatives like the Disclose Act, aren’t agreeing with Democrats on this issue.

According to Zwick, the problems with the bill really started when the House of Representatives added a carve-out in the bill for membership groups like the NRA. This move allowed the bill’s opponents to argue that it was the result of a corrupt process and was not a pure transparency initiative, so when it moved to the Senate, moderate Republicans and Democrats were not willing to participate in talks. Had the carve-out incentive not occurred, there may not have ever been a debate regarding the Disclose Act.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) is not included as an organization that will have to disclose contributions because the new agreement between Democrats and the NRA exempts organizations that have over one million members, have been in existence for more than 10 years, have members in all 50 states, and raise 15 percent or less of their funds from corporations, from the disclosure requirements. Many have criticized the criteria as a means of rewriting the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act in favor of the Democrats, as they exempt virtually all of the major unions from having to disclose contributions while heavily regulating such activity for corporations.

Citizens United appears to have leveled the playing field for corporations, associations and the unions.

The House passed the Disclose Act it did not pass the Senate as moderate democrats and republicans were against the special carve-out as noted above. I did get the information from Wikipedia.

I can always rely on FR Conservatives to support large, anonymous campaign contributions, something which is indistinguishable in practical terms from legalized bribery.

That's all I need to say about the Conservative Movement as pertains to this topic.

If #4.30 is for me, well you miss the part where I am okay with the Act if adhered to and the special provision is taken out. I am never for large anonymous donations for either party.

Then we have common ground. Citizens United is a travesty and should be overturned legislatively.

John B common ground or not Citizens United is the law of the land, if you overturn that decision legislatively, you will open a pandora's box. How many other decisions might be overthrown, Roe comes to mind. Then what another giant waste of money trying to change laws that one party or another disagrees with. I do agree but I am not sure I want to open the door.

Proving once again that liberal bigotry is alive and well, as a conservative I find the corporate money in politics disgusting. The supreme court got it wrong, and this needs to be fixed, and it should include union and any other bundling, all of this collective influence in politics and money must stop.

Solyndra is a debacle. It may also involve political cronyism, or worse, corruption. That there is proof that it was a political football and was rushed is very disturbing. That is failed so quickly and with such a large amount only speaks to why government should not be an investment fund.

This unending favoritism has to stop. Why does the farmer get a break, but the recording studio not? Why is the oil company favored and not the wind power guys?

This is why I love Herman Cain's 9/9/9 plan. 9% national sales tax, 9% income tax and 9% corporate tax. He's done the math. It works, and it eliminates all the cronyism, all the "favorite sons" and most of the bloody con jobs on both sides of the aisle.

Tell me why this isn't the way forward? But not more spew, go read Herman's plan and tell me why we shouldn't simplify all of this, because these trillion dollar games threaten our nation and our world.

Practical Libertarian I do like Herman Cain's plan, it solves a lot of issues.

John B Legalized bribery goes both ways and it is an issue for me, still if your okay with overturning Roe because that would most likely be next as a majority of the country albeit slight majority are against abortion.

The best way to reverse Citizens United would be to bring a case against it to the Supreme Court and have them reverse (ie dred scott decision)it.

Roe v Wade and Citizens United are completely different areas of the law. One deals with a woman's right to determine what happens within her own body, the other deals with buying politicians who serve all of us. There is no connection.

PL, how upset are you that the GW Bush Administration was anxious to make those loans to Solyndra, and even tried to rush through the loan process to prevent the Obama Administration from taking credit?

                            http://cleantechnica.com/2011/09/15/solyndra-advanced-by-bush-for-2-years-solyndra-timeline/

Solyndra was 1.3% of the federal government's green jobs initiative. The FBI will determine if there was fraud and the company had enough recoverable resources to probably make the taxpayer whole. Making it a political attack is nothing but the usual attack politics of the GOPTP. Living in a glass house themselves (as shown in the links) they should be careful about throwing stones.

@JB -- But at the end of the day all politics is local but the blame rests at the top. The House will maintain its massive Republican majority next November and the Republicans will probably take the majority in the Senate. The American people are smart enough to see that another term for obama would only assure that stalemate will occur.

@JB -- Polls are saying one thing while reality says another. Take this weeks special elections. A Republican replaced a disgraced rep. in a NY district that hasn't gone Republican in 80 years, but a democrat could not defeat a Republican who was replacing a disgraced Republican rep. in Nevada. Again, the American people are smart enough to see they made a huge mistake in 2008 and will correct the error in 2012 -- unless of course the Clinton's see an opening and go for the jugular. They are ruthless enough to make that move if they actually thought there was an opening.

Why haven't you been banned Feisty? At least half of your comments are collapsed, presumably because they are full of name calling, personal attacks and plain hatred toward anyone you disagree with, yet not once have you been suspended for even a day, like happens to those who have done much less than you.

Everyone knows you are an MSNBC shill who doesn't follow the rules while being one with protected status. If anyone ever deserved to be banned here it is you. There is no coincidence that you nearly always get the first post on First Read. Only an insider could do that. At least try to be honest about your insider status and try to follow the rules that you are immune from because of your status here. Being a hypocrite and playing the rules game when it suits you doesn't add to your credibility. It only takes away from what little credibility MSNBC has left.

Reposting something that was collapsed without a COH violation is different than just jumping from thread to thread pasting an identical comment to every subthread. If you can't figure out the difference then you're not trying. And if MSNBC has no credibility why do you come here every single day to spout Conservative talking points?

John, I come here everyday because there is no point in talk to conservatives who already agree with conservatives. If we conservatives all left this board it would be left with just a bunch of people agreeing with each other. What fun would that be? Maybe if boring is your idea of fun, that would be great.

As for feisy bev and the like, they spew nearly the same hate of anyone who disagrees with them on every thread, yet say those who disagree with them are are the haters. Why do they have to xall everyone names and why don't they ever get the boot for for even a day? Because they are connected shills, that is why.

They are here only to stir up trouble, attack those who don't agree with them and block chat from anyone who can prove them wrong. Is that why you are here - to flap your gums and not enter into reasonable discussion? That is obviously why they are here. They wouldn't debate anything with people they know are smarter than they are, because they can't.

Well John? Nothing more to say? Debate or rebuttal that the board queens can't handle? Tell us why you are here if not to debate the issues. Or maybe you are just here to salp those on the back who agree with you while dicussing nothing.?

The $500 million Obama wasted on Soylent Green is another glaring example of why we need better leadership in the Whitehouse. Passage of the Frank/Dodd act has resulted in 10's of thousands of lost jobs in the bank sector. Which will lead to less loans for job creation in the private sector. Thankfully more and more Americans (particularly 1st time voters) are waking up to the fact that poor leadership in the White House is causing alot of damage. It is refreshing to see that many Amercicans are saying No to the "Blame some one else and I'm a victim of someone else's success" rhetoric that got Obama elected in 2008. WE desperatly need new leadership in the White House. Vote for Change in 2012!

The almost 2 million dollars in lobbist payoffs by Solyndra paid off so to speak. Ah, but wasn't it Obama that said, more than 32 months ago, he was going to change the way Washington worked? Just another Obama "talking" point to score political points and votes. Voters need to go back and replay all of Obama's arrogant and naive statements from 2008.

SHOCKING!!!! But really pales in comparison to the trillions in NO-BID military contracts Haliburton has received over the past ten years thanks to Cheney's influence... I don't believe our economy would be in such dire shape as it is in had it not been for such shenanigans by our previous administration. Shall we open investigations and appoint special prosecutors? I'm ALL for it - but NO EXEMPTIONS or limitiations/expirations as W. got after Starr's investigation of President Clinton. NO MORE DOUBLE STANDARDS - look into them ALL!

Still want to keep spouting off on the topic?????????

Yes have Eric Holder pull back from the law suit against Boeing for building a plant in South Carolina instead of South Korea and spend that time and effort going against Cheney and Hailurton. Would probably be a far better use of the Justice Depts time. (Obama better clear that with his Union pals first though).....

Please understand that Ben and jerrys cant bid on a contract and just waltz in bells ringing in a Ice cream truck. You have to be able to deliver services in a safe and secure manner, I have 4 personal friends currently in Afghanistan as contractors. Former Spec ops guys that are putting them selves in danger and need an umbrella like these corps. have. Sometimes there is no such thing as putting a contract out to bid for a multitude of reasons.

This idea you liberals put forth that all Democrats are saintly and all Republicans are devils is bunk. In my life I have voted for as many Democrats as Republican. I do not pull a lever blindly. Too many people do. That is how we got into this mess called the Obama administration.

If so I guess that puts to rest the investigation of the Bush/Cheney/Haliburton connection. Unless Bush/Cheney in some way have Obama in their pocket. Now would that be something. Want to go there? Clinton and all the other presidents have used no-bid contracts for years. Remember Kosovu and the like? When there is no other company capable of fulfilling the contract, bidding would not be very helpful when only one is qualified to do the job. It is time for an LBJ moment for this president, the moment of "I will not be a candidate for re-election to the office of president". LBJ knew he was toast, but you and the other Obamabots must realize the anointed one is toast also. My guess is there is a behind the curtain suggestions are being made to Obama as we speak. No dem has the _alls to say it publicly because of PC concerns about the fust black president.

                                  ...trillions in no bid contracts...

This nonsense has to stop. The entire cost of Iraq is less than $1 trillion in 10 years, they estimate the yearly cost at $70 billion. So it is literally impossible to award "trillions" in no bid contracts - this is like arguing with a 12 year old.

We can argue all day about not going to war, I for one abhor war, let alone on foreign soil for unknown benefit to the US.

We need to stop policing the world. We need to stop funding 20% of Americans to sit on the butts and do nothing at all.

We need to shut down much of the federal government, as it is both expensive, and useless.

But to act like Obama and the Democrats have not failed us it to be dishonest. Obamacare is already a failure, and may be costing jobs. Govt spending is out of control and shows no signs of abating - every crisis with these clowns means another 1/2 trillion in debt. This isn't leadership, it is foolishness. They have sold all of us down the river. It is past time to shut down the money train and grow up.

Absolutely. Much of today's MSM is lazy and entirely too cozy with the powerful. "Speak truth to power" is virtually a dead issue, replaced with a false equivalency in which a "reasonable solution" is assumed to be midway between the positions of the 2 major parties. That allows people like Bachman to tell lies while having it called "spin" and considered part of the process. It's a process which does nothing but facilitate and give credence to liars. I have news for every "journalist" who wants to play that game. If one side says the Sun comes up in the East and the other the West, the Sun does NOT come up somewhere in the middle -- one of them is lying.

Well said. It was good to see FactCheck calling Obama a liar, as he kept claiming his bill (which didn't exist so could not be scrutinized) was paid for, when in fact it is not, and cannot be. There is no way for any American to guarantee a 10 year debt be paid for by future budgets that have not been agreed to.

There were other lies that they exposed, which is why the bill is sitting on King Harry's desk going no where. The democrats will not vote on it, and the Republicans will vote it down. It was a con-job, and not a good one.

                                    NEWER BREAKING NEWS:

Latest Texas jobs figures shows net jobs loss, unemployment highest in 24 years

                                    By NBC's Michael Isikoff

Texas Gov. Rick Perry's efforts to tout his record on jobs and the economy as a centerpiece of his presidential campagn took a hit today with new figures from one of his own state agencies: They show the Texas unemployment rate increased to 8.5% in August -- the highest level in more than 24 years and more than twice the rate when Perry took office in December 2000.

                                    Hey Ray:

Spin, spin, spin, spew, spin, spout, spin, spin, spin RNC talking points and half-truths and untruths; throw in a little re-write of history and many distorted facts to mislead or at least confuse voters.

                                    Republican politics as usual......

Compare to the U.S. statistics and you will see that Texas has pretty well tracked the U.S. rate since 1990 -- except that in the recent Obama years, Texas has stayed below the national unemployment rate. A person would have to be a blithering idiot to believe that a state wouldn't be affected by one of the worst unemployment disasters in history in the last three years. Munch on the PIE Hilly!!!!

                                    http://www.google.com/publicdata/explore?ds=z1ebjpgk2654c1_&met_y=unemployment_rate&idim=state:ST480000&fdim_y=seasonality:S&dl=en&hl=en&q=texas+unemployment+rate#ctype=l&strail=false&nselm=h&met_y=unemployment_rate&fdim_y=seasonality:S&scale_y=lin&ind_y=false&rdim=state&idim=state:ST480000&ifdim=state&tdim=true&hl=en&dl=en

And if you remember right genius, right after Perry took office there was 9-11 which had a negative effect all of this country with employment. Notice that Texas recovered well after 9-11 then got hit by this failed president's policies. I'm not the spin doctor here -- you are.

You would expect the feisty RH to be from Illinois! what do you expect. However, the Speaker is NOT the Prez, he does not NEED a jobs bill! OBAMA does, and he does not have anything. Never had a budget, never had a HC plan bill, now NO jobs plan? NADA, noting, no ideas. Progressives are bankrupt on anything but raising taxes, and redistributing our money.

All the rest of that statement is in the Legislative purview and is in effect exclusive to the House of Represetatives.President has put out his Suggestions on Job Creation. It's on paper and everything. Where's yours?

NOmo0, don't bother to confuse Job1, that is unless you just want to have some fun with him. He just doesn't get it or understand who pays the income tax in this country. Without a balanced budget amendment and a provision that additional tax revenue has to go toward debt reduction, every dollar will be spent and more will be borrowed. Job1, like so many of these extreme left wing folks will only wake-up when we have a real financial crisis on our hands, and if things do not change, we are on our way down that path. The Democrats tell them what they want to hear. They don't get it.

Like local governments in the the 1950's and 1960's that wouldn't let Black children go to white only schools until the federal government stepped in.

Like the racist UNIONS of the 50's and 60's that would not let blacks or Jews in??!!

By the way, you're wrong about black children not going to white only schools. I grew up on the South Side of Chicago in the 50's, and we had ALL kinds of kids in my class!!

                                    Stop your uneducated, stupid crap.

                                      So Bernie,

Are you denying the fact that southern states in 1950's and 1960's wouldn't let Black Children go to white only schools until the federal government stepped in.

If you are then you must have been blind to the actual history of the south and federal troops that were needed to enforce federal laws.

So you need to stop your uneducated, stupid crap.

Rep. Louis Gohmert (R-TX) has gone a step further than mere talking points, snagging the name "American Jobs Act" for his own bill in the House. Gohmert named his bill Wednesday morning, according to his office, before any Democratic representative had introduced Obama's bill for him.

"After waiting to see what the President would actually put into legislative language, and then waiting to see if anybody would actually introduce the President's bill in the House, today I took the initiative and introduced the 'American Jobs Act of 2011,'" Gohmert said in a statement Wednesday afternoon.

The bill would "amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to repeal the corporate income tax."Gohmert touted his two-page bill as a simple alternative to Obama's 155-page legislation and ends the press release cheekily, "If we really want to create jobs and grow the economy, we must pass 'The American Jobs Act' now."

Some interesting Chicago tidbits.......About five years ago, Mayor Daley (the most recent) was afraid- then Sen. Obama was developing an interest in running for Mayor of Chicago so the Democratic machine there churned into action and began promoting him as a possible Presidential candidate. It's no coincidence that his brother is now President Obama's chief of staff........Chicago politics - it's a contact sport......Have a nice weekend everyone.....

All the bashing of Chicago-style politics ignores the fact that they've jailed 3 governors (from both parties) in recent years for corruption. In contrast we see states like Florida, Texas, et al where they elect and reelect scoundrels who clearly deserve serious jail time. In some cases, they even try to pretend they should be promoted to president.

There are two other "green Obama Projects" getting ready to hit the skids in California. The Avenal Solar Farm project and the Speed rail to no where project. The Avenal project was given 25 million to just start. No one took into the fact its a no dust area. Then the speed rail to no where without one rail in place is already running into the billions with GE/CSR in the middle of it. The speed rail by the way goes to Corcoran, who main population is two level four prisons. Boswell already has lawyers on board due to the BS the federal goverment has been playing into the project. Obama toast. And just a little FYI Boswell has been a LONG time democrat supporter. Donates alot of money to the Democrat party. Obama loses another one.

Perry will do a better job than Hussein has? we need cuts in medi-care and social security, also need to layoff govt workers to help reduce govt debt. Taxes need to be cut more than current rates to spur job growth.

Cuts in military should be small because we are in war against terrorist.
