Santorum blasts his GOP rivals

GREENVILLE, SC -- Playing the aggressive underdog, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum took shots at almost all of his primary opponents during a speech here today.

Speaking at a South Carolina GOP fundraiser, Santorum revisited his criticism of a Ron Paul campaign blogger, who suggested that America was partly to blame for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Santorum also alleged that -- based on their statements supporting Afghanistan troop withdrawal at Monday’s presidential debate -- Rick Perry and Jon Huntsman subscribed to “at least part” of Paul’s foreign-policy viewpoint.

“For Ron Paul to have on his website, and he did, a quote from someone who blamed 9/11 on us, that it was our actions that brought about 9/11 and in a sense, we deserved it -- why would you put a man like that in the White House?”

He continued, “Unfortunately, we see not just him and now Huntsman and now Perry signing on to at least part of that agenda."

Santorum said that when he heard Perry talk about withdrawal from Afghanistan, “I felt I was listening to Joe Biden, not Rick Perry.”

Santorum also suggested that Perry’s comments on Social Security were nothing new, telling the audience of 30 here that he had been vocal on the issue since the mid-1990s.

“It’s great for Rick Perry to go out and say, 'Oh, we need to change the Social Security system.' Heck, the AARP says we need to change the Social Security system. How bold is that!”

IN addition, he accused both Herman Cain and Mitt Romney of hypocrisy, saying that they’ve both run for office before -- although they play the “businessman, not career politician” card.

“I understand you’re a businessman, I understand you’ve accomplished things, but don’t say you're not a career politician when you tried to be one but you just failed at it!” he exclaimed.

Not even an ex-candidate -- former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty -- escaped Santorum’s line of fire, as he took a shot at Pawlenty’s third-place showing at the Ames straw poll.

Santorum said that Pawlenty’s heavy investment in Ames didn’t pay off, while his fourth-place finish came with a much smaller price tag. He told the audience here a story about running into a commentator at the straw poll who told him that in this case, coming in fourth was better than coming in third.

“I finished in fourth and Pawlenty finished in third. And the reason it was bad was they spent an enormous amount of money and were able to end up with only a few hundred votes more than I did,” Santorum said.

After the event today, Santorum headed back to Pennsylvania. He will be returning to South Carolina on Saturday for a series of events including celebrations of Constitution Day, held on Sept. 17.

The ideological rivalry between Rick Santorum and Rep. Ron Paul, arguably the most conservative and libertarian members of the 2012 race that are allowed on debate stages, has become a fascinating subplot of the 2012 debates, and tonight sparks flew as Santorum challenged Rep. Paul's foreign policy, comparing his opinions to Osama Bin Laden and putting him on a defensive that earned him boos.

"We are under threat because we occupy so many countries," Rep. Paul began, explaining that the "purpose of al-Qaeda in attacking us" was to "invite us" to invade. Noting the difference betweemilitary and defense spending, Rep. Paul argued that America needed "a foreign policy that takes care of our national defense" but is "willing to get along with trade with people." "There is no authority in the Constitution to be the police of the world," Rep. Paul concluded.

Santorum, obviously disgusted with that answer, turned to Rep. Paul. "On your website, on 9/11, you had a blog post that basically blamed the United States for 9/11– on your website yesterday," Santorum noted, "You said that it was our actions that brought about the actions of 9/11." Calling this "irresponsible," he demanded of Rep. Paul that a presidential candidate "should not be parroting what Osama Bin Laden said on 9/11," as the attacks are not a result of our behavior, but because "we have a civilization that is antithetical to the civilization of the jihadists."

Rep. Paul responded with an attempt to explain what he believed was the motive pushing al-Qaeda, an explanation met with boos– a rare sound in debates, where heavy Paul contingents are typically in attendance. The biggest boo line? The suggesting that America is being unfair to Palestinians.

This is a good indicator that the same failed Bush Doctrine would be the foreign policy for Santorum and others. And supposedly the same reason for the loss in NY 9. We were NOT attacked on 9/11 because of our freedoms and whatever simpleton explanations the right-wing peddles. We are bankrupt because we occupy so many countries, which is precisely bin Laden's plan. Thank you for speaking the truth Ron Paul, or trying to over the Haters who lack any civility in the Tea Party.

"I understand you're a businessman, I understand you've accomplished things, but don't say you're not a career politician when you tried to be one but you just failed at it!" he exclaimed.

Right, and what about you, Santorum, you're not a "has been" re-tread?

This site seems to have become bipartisan... in the sense that many conservatives are trying to voice their opinion here and engage in polite debate. Some of the old liberal guard seem to resent that and attack the opposing views of others with an amazing determined effort!

Why can't level headed discussion of current political issues be discussed without such mean spirited rancor? Name calling and insults should have no place here yet the liberals choose that path and the conservatives respond in kind. Is it possible to avoid school yard bullying at First Read? You'd have to ask the liberals that.

All that i believe to be TRUE about 9/11 is that 2977 souls perished and the Bush/Cheney administration refused to allow any investigative body to have subpoena power, security clearance and witness protection ability while looking into the government's conspiracy theory. Looks a lot like guilty demeanor to me. Watch WTC#7 come down at freefall acceleration velocity on youtube and tell me, with a straight face, that explosives weren't used to accomplish its destruction. It's not like it was hit by any plane, or damaged by any piece from the North tower which has ever been identified.

Well, where do i start Rick your not a bad man and thats from someone who Supported Sam Brownback last time and then went for John Mccain. But whats with the Warmongering. America is sick of war and there soildeirs comeing back in body bags instead of medals. America is faceing its worst economic collapse since the 1930s. One of the reasons Barack Obama is President is that he said he would bring the troops home. The only Americans that want war is the Defense Contractors. Obama has suceeded in the killing of Osama Bin Laden probably the only achievement he can be credited for and also he has been not as black radical as some of us feared even getting criticism of the Black Caucus.

But what is your obsession with Ron Paul at every debate you have tries to pick a fight with him this doesnt work for you as Ron Paul is liked even by people who dont support Paul maybe by most of the Tea Party so your going to get no support by doing it Perry and Romney are your targets and the current polling is not good for you 6% in Pennsylvania come on if your serious about this race that has to be 26% or more at first. So Santorum a bit of advice stop attacking Paul, Become a Peacenik, and keep going on about your Social, Energy, Deficit and Business plans and where you see a plan to attack Perry and Romney do and where is the Sam Brownback endorsement you need more endorsements ?

No one, not any rational person should ever have any doubt what the Republicans / Tea Party would do, what their goals are and where their loyalty is. Their rhetoric is meaningless and only intended to deceive and manipulate as has been continually and totally proven. Bush-Cheney clearly demonstrated what their stubborn focus and arrogant loyalty was when they concentrated on serving Special Interests and the very wealthy few, while irresponsibly and belligerently giving the majority only apathy, the costs and an abundance of subterfuge to con the people and manipulate public opinion. The Republican Party totally supported that and now, along with the Tea Party, they clearly show it is what they want to return to and continue with, regardless of the costs to the people.

The indisputable evidence: they constantly put their political ambitions above all else, without any responsible concern for costs or solving problems; they fault and block all efforts while refusing to offer bipartisan cooperation or anything constructive; they vigorously fight to protect the interests of the very wealthy and completely ignore the needs of the country; they use third party groups, who collect substantial contributions from influential supporters, to coerce and intimidate their own people and squelch individual consciences in order to assure unity; they are cocky and arrogant, emboldened by past successes in conning the people and manipulating public opinion, like with the manipulation of the Christian block (2000 & continuing), the Swift-boat propaganda (2004) and the creation and support of the Tea Party with their emotional extremes (2010 & now), and they have no hesitation, no matter how obvious, in offering more subterfuge to rationalize their biased positions - examples: Tax Cuts for the wealthy, excessive considerations for oil companies, the proven fraudulent (by Bush-Cheney’s actions) “trickle down” theory, which just solicits political support; they constantly criticize but then any objective analysis clearly shows their positions always favor the few and provide the majority little more than rhetoric to rationalize; their bottom line is to return to “more of the same”, Bush-Cheney style, which has already greatly hurt the majority, most especially the total middle-class.

Once anyone can put the talk aside their intent and loyalty are completely clear and should be totally offensive to any average American. Wanting more from Obama, needing better results and faulting details in his positions are all understandable ... but he does deserve credit for honesty and conscientious effort, that which no one can credit the Republicans / Tea Party with. To not see this, to ignore all of it, to fail to understand where the Republicans / Tea Party literally want to go, who they totally favor and who they seek to totally deceive, is simply self-defeating for the average American. I don’t remember who said it but someone pointed out that with the Republicans (and the Tea Party) being so committed to the very few and completely dependent on the substantial and powerful support from them, that they have literally become completely incapable of responsibly governing for the majority. Any objective and rational analysis of their actions seems to fully substantiate that. If we want to return to the catastrophe of “more of the same”, then we can reject the obviousness of all of this.

Wow. There are so many things wrong with this post, it's hard to decide where to begin

any rational person should ever have any doubt what the Republicans / Tea Party would do, what their goals are and where their loyalty is.

I perceive this is as a total misunderstanding of conservative ideas brought about by the regurgitation of talking points fed by cable news commentators and given no pause or independent thought of the points being fed. RGiles - please name the Republican goals, the motives behind them and how implementation and results that would occur. My guess is that you have no well thought out idea - you've not considered the ramifications of your beliefs.

Their rhetoric is meaningless and only intended to deceive and manipulate

Sort of like the President telling the Latino community that they need unemployment checks (instead of jobs), and that spending money in Stimulus I made a dent in the job crisis - (12 million still unemployed), that the auto bailout was paid back ($12 billion we will never see again), that an EPA rule was pulled back (while implementing billions more in regulations during the distraction period), that Lilly Ledbetter landmark legislation helped women (women are still paid 77% less than men in 2009 and 2010), green jobs will pull us out of recession (Solyndra), and that the evil successful are taking money from the poor.......rhetoric like that?

they concentrated on serving Special Interests and the very wealthy few,

Like the hedge fund managers who invested in Solyndra (the contracts were written that in event a default, fund raisers and supporters cut in line before the people) and the unions who won favoritism over the secured bond holders of GM.......

          put their political ambitions above all else, without any responsible concern for costs or solving problems;

And President Obama is running around the country promising money to the poor and middle class taken from the wealthy- (even though it's a given that the Democratic Senate won't pass tax hike bills); his latest solution is a photocopy of the last solution - give away money to save the currently employed versus creating an atmosphere to employ the unemployed but tell the unemployed they'll have jobs---....blaming all for the failure of his policies to make himself the political victim - and move forward his re-election - lying to the people to make it look like he cares.

          they are cocky and arrogant,

Like President Obama who in his condescending manner blames the Tea Party, GOP, earth quakes, and tsunami's for his failures, and saunters off to Martha's Vinyard while 1 in 6 real people struggle to support their families on food stamps.

he does deserve credit for honesty and conscientious effort,

Like "the jobs bill is entirely paid for", "pass stimulus I and unemployment will hold at 8%',"the auto companies paid back all tax payer money" "the new jobs bill will have all new ideas" "Gitmo will be closed", "Solyndra is a sound investment."

RGiles, and subsequent fans - GOP and Richard - you need to step back, take a breath and consider the rhetoric you spew applies to the leader you adore.

First Read has turned into a wasteland of liberal idiocy! And collapsed posts it seems.......

Thanks redwig, you seem to be helping the conservative cause more than you realize! On another thread, the one about Solydra, someone mentioned the same thing, they were right!

Obama is singing out to you redwig.... do you hear him? He's singing a song by Olivia Newton John (your favorite!) called "If you love me, you will leave me", or something to that effect. Barry is hoping you will listen and crawl back under that rock.... by doing so he's hoping his popularity rating will get out of the basement! ta ta old gal!

Mickey, I for one would like to see most collapsed posts restored. Some truly should be collapsed for their content, but not most. I would like see all libbies a change to air their ridiculous political rants! Where else can children do this?

          miked,

I don't think ANY posts should be collapsed. After all, what is that First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States for?

You ARE a fan of the Constitution, are you not?

It's all about responsibility, but If someone wants to float a big stinky one out there for all to see, so be it. Let the moderators take care of it.

Nice try Mickey, I am a major believer in the Constitution and especially it's First Amendment, but when posers (posters) like you and redwig resort to lies, distortions, and insidious name calling I would call for restraint. First Read understands that, why don't you?

[I am a major believer , but when posers (posters) like you and redwig resort to lies, distortions, and insidious name calling I would call for restraint. First Read understands that, why don't you?]

A "major believer in the Constitution and especially it's First Amendment"...really...but only when it suits your needs or meets your agenda?

If someone wants to post "lies and distortions" as you put it, isn't it their right under the First Amendment to do so? I mean, after all, Fox "news" fought for that right and based their whole defense on the First Amendment. They said "to hell with responsibility, we're going to air what we want, factual or not". Does that appeal to you?

If you believe something is a "lie or distortion", then isn't it your responsibility to attempt to refute that "lie or distortion"?

Or is it easier to just "collapse" the post as if one couldn't be bothered...

As far as the "name calling" goes, here's a hint: simply don't read it, or put that individual on ignore if their posts offend you. You have that choice, no?

If you are "call[ing] for restraint", you of all people, would understand that "restraint" is the RESPONSIBILITY of the individual, is it not? I guess it's what ones interpretation of the First Amendment is, but what it simply DOES NOT allow for is someone contributing to collapsing a post bases solely on the fact that "they don't like it", which seems to be your interpretation of the First Amendment.

I would argue that it is you that doesn't understand that. But for you and others who contribute to collapsing posts it's all about the "Don't Tread On Me, But Let Me Tread On Thee" ideology.

James Madison is turning in his grave.

Fundamentals are not being addressed. Here are some:

          • -You can’t create jobs here by exporting them to China and India
          • -Don’t make it here,…..then don’t sell it here
          • -Capital works best for Americans when it’s kept in America
          • -You can’t talk about fiscal sanity when spending $3 billion a month on war
          • -Unions work, or they wouldn't be a target
          • -You can’t talk about creating jobs by outsourcing all of your industry, and importing H1B Visa workers to take the few American jobs remaining
          • -Nobody has any money,……. cause they ain’t got jobs,……….. and can’t buy stuff that business sells,………. who can’t pay employees cause they got no money either,……. cause people can’t spend, cause they ain’t got jobs………….
          • -“They” don’t hate us for our “freedoms”. Personally I think they hate us cause we park tanks on their lawns and incinerate people at their weddings. Just a guess here.
          • -Common sense isn’t
          • -Adopting a system of legal political bribery will addict your politicians to corruption and influence peddling. They’ll serve money,….not people.
          • -Protectionism works,….other nations have discovered this. What made US forget?
          • -“That they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights: LIFE, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Implications of this are obvious.
          • -We are sorry you have @!$%#ty, mean neighbors that hate you. Don’t like the “hood”? Either fight or move cause we’re broke. Want our help? Then get ready to pony up some major loot.

          See? Me for President!!

I'm glad then President is bring the issue of jobs. Isn't that what the Tea Party rode into town on? Didn't they promised jobs? Wow how that got buried. The truth is that we are in a long running recession world wide. Look at Europe and the Euro putting some people back to work is better than doing nothing even when that noting is the same old thing that has not produce anything. Cut spending give more tax breaks to the wealthy damn we done that for more than 10 years and we got full employment right?

            Reply#11 - Thu Sep 15, 2011 9:15 PM EDT

The president has tried to create jobs by employing everyone he can find that likes him to work for the government AND loaning money to his favorites...see where that got us? The "Tea Party" has only had a few people in office for less than 9 months and has been stopped by obama and harry. So, you like their progress so far...and those 2 + polousy for 2.5 years or a lot more... What will it take for you to realize that you have been supporting the people who have hurt the USA most?

There is no way Santorum is going to make it to the WH.  He should just be quiet and support / guide the party, not attack.   Being in the Senate not only disqualifies him (part of today's problems in Washington) his view is a littel too left and full of compromise.  He does not even attack well.  This is just what the media wants.  Reagan did not compromise, but was able to win people to his side.  All future candidates should take the same approach, and have genuine leadership skills, discipline, vision, and realistic goals to put this country back on its feet and working again.

Rick Santorum needs to DROP OUT! What a waste of time... a total egomaniac. Add that Gingrich to the list along with Mr. 9-9-9 Herman Cain. (If I hear that obnoxious 9-9-9 pitch again I think I'm going to puke.) They are making these debates a three-ring circus. Santorum rolls his eyes more than he speaks about anything substantial. It's obvious he was tapped along with Gingrich to keep Ron Paul at bay, starting side-show debates. Santorum has such a simplistic view of foreign policy. He actually thinks American-Iranian relations began in 1979? Santorum would be the best representative for a dumbed-down citizenry but the best representative for what Eisenhower would call a "diligent citizenry" is obviously the maverick libertarian, Texas Congressman Ron Paul.

Tend to think that egomania is high on the requirement list to run for public office.....it certainly isn't service to the voting electorate or concern for the lowly working man.

Bill Thomas @1.31==This site seems to have become bipartisan... in the sense that many conservatives are trying to voice their opinion here and engage in polite debate. Are you speaking of polite posters like Bob1887910, Damage123, Spanky, Joe in Albany, NoJoNj, and a lot of other conservatives? Yes I know there are a lot of not so polite posters on the other side also.

Gee, I kind of always thought that whole point of campaigning for a political office was to point out the flaws, weaknesses, inconsistencies of the other candidates and demonstrate how you would be better. I love the media feeding on this like a shark frenzy ripping apart one political party or another, because the candidates are doing what candidates are supposed to do.....I thought that the time for parties to unite was after the conventions, and up until then, the American people were to benefit from the wide range of ideas and approaches to help make intelligents decisions. If this isn't what we are supposed to be doing in the primary processes, then can we stop expending billions of dollars? I can think of a whole lot better use for those billions of dollars buried in campaign war chests....like a small matter of the national debt????
