TAMPA, FL -- The morning after a sometimes-rocky appearance in front of a Tea Party debate audience, Gov. Rick Perry said he was "taken aback" by cheers from some crowd members on a hypothetical question of whether a young man who decides not to buy health insurance should be refused care if he develops a life-threatening illness and be left to die.
"I was a bit taken aback by that myself," Perry told NBC News and the Miami Herald after appearing at a breakfast fundraiser in Tampa.
"We're the party of life. We ought to be coming up with ways to save lives."
Perry distinguished from that the issue of "justice," reiterating his strong support and "respect" for the death penalty on a state-by-state basis. "But the Republican party ought to be about life and protecting, particularly, innocent life," he added.
Perry also responded to the crowd's negative reaction to his support for allowing in-state tuition for illegal immigrants, saying his campaign has "the right message" on opportunities for children who were brought to the United States illegally "by no fault of their own."
"This issue is about education, it's not about immigration," he said.
"These kids showed up in our state by no fault of their own, some 2-3 years of age. And they've been in our schools, they've done their work, they've prepared themselves good, they want to be contributing members of society. So it would be I think the wrong message to say somehow or another that you can't go to our colleges, or we've going to punish you because of the sound of your last name."
"When people really think about it, I think they'll understand what we did in Texas was the right thing for Texas," he said.
Last night's debate also featured shots at Perry from both Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum on the issue of Gardasil, a vaccine that Perry mandated to be given to 12-year-old girls to prevent HPV - a disease linked to cervical cancer.
Bachmann said on NBC's TODAY Show this morning that she was approached by a woman after the debate whose daughter had suffered mental retardation as a result of getting the vaccine.
Perry dismissed that idea as similar to debunked theories linking vaccinations to autism.
"You heard the same arguments about giving our children protections from some of the childhood diseases, and they were, autism was part of that. Now we've subsequently found out that was generated and not true."
"I would suggest to you that this issue about Gardasil and making it available was about saving people's lives," he added.

The Texas Turkey is starting to find out how STUPID he really is when he gets away from all the STUPIDITY of his fellow Texans. Now we know why he is against the fence, it would keep the lower educated Mexicans on their side of the border, and would not be available to work for lower wages and no health care.It is also an exit forTexas when he decides to seceede from the United States
Can't wait to hear the excuses from the left when/if Anthony Weiner's seat goes Republican.
75% of his district is Democrat and the Republican candidate is ahead in the polls.
What did the left scream when the 26th district in western New York went Democrat?
This is a referendum on Republicans & the Ryan Plan !!
What's it going to be when a 3 to 1 Democrat district seat goes Republican?
Can't wait to hear the excuses.
Obama is more toxic now, then during the Scott Brown election.
Anyone but Obama 2012.
You must not have a darn thing to think about, if that's all you have to look forward to.
Maybe you ought to consider how Republicans are devastating the America People with forced lower wages, and how Republicans are doing their level best to force failure on America and the American People, not to mention all the Republican corruption.
I bet to you that makes Republicans true "patriots".
Boo-hoo American Girl, boo-frickin-hoo
Please give some specific examples.
You don't want to explain why a Republican might win Weiner's seat in a heavily Democratic district do you? Because that would mean you would have to acknowledge that Obama is a failure and America has turned it's back on him and liberalism.
Still waiting for you to explain how the demcorat won in a heavily republican area in upstate NY. Oops, guess you forgot that huh? I'd say it's a wash, nothing gained, nothing lost.
God, help us all if Michele Bachmann, becomes President. The woman is a fool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The GOP isn't the Party of Life they are GOD's Only People and are the Party of Only Christians should be able to make laws and run the government. The GOP is a Christian Lobby more than anything else. They want to convert everyone as part of their Crusade against the United States Constitution and anyone in the world who doesn't agree with them, into mindless zealous slaves intent on serving the American economic system as cheep labor so that the GOP's benefactors can live the lives of Kings and serve as a collective GOD to Congress, while they receive ample rewards for their anti-liberty anti social law making. Rick Perry wants to be GOD"S right hand man and dole out his wealthy-centric economic and anti-social justice to us all.
How come he was only "taken aback" this morning and not last night when he could have commented on how much he was "taken aback" during the debate?? Chicken@!$%#.
I've been a little surprised by Perry. I thought he was too liberal but I'm shocked on the response of other candidate's when they come up against an honest man. Most of them made jerks of themselves, trying to stand up to Perry - especially Bachman.
Guess I've got a new hero.
The only one of the bunch who is not a jerk is Huntsman and maybe Ron Paul.
Terry if that's all it takes to impress you I can't say I'm impressed with you.
Mr. Eisenhower also warned us about the Military-Industrial Complex. He'd probably get "offed" if he were still around today.
So, Perry is surprised that his Tea Party base would say, "let the guy die". This just proves that Ricky lives in a La-La-Land of self-delusion about the mindset of his Bagger base. Wake up, Perry, your base is comprised of the same ones who think healthcare should involve not getting sick unless you have employer-based health insurance; and, if you are uninsured and get sick, you should die quickly. Lets also not forget that the typical Bagger also believes that the unemployed are just lazy and refusing to look for work; that any form of public assistance for the poor just creates degenerates and parasites (the Atlas-Shrugged attitude to helping your fellow human beings); and their "Christianity" ends at the front door of the church unless you're a woman, then there are abolsutely no boundaries to their intrusion and involvement in your reproductive system. Their "Let The guy die", mentality also goes along with the Tea Party mentality of "Let them eat cake."
Well stated Diane.
Diane-If you are so concerned with the living, why aren't you equally concerned with the unborn? The idea that conservatives don't care about the poor is ridiculous, they donate millions to charity every year. The problem with welfare is the generations that live on it their entire lives and yes, some of those people are lazy and basically "slaves" to the government. Bill Clinton and the Republicans in the House produced a Welfare Reform bill that got 70% of the people off of welfare within 2 years of being on it, it put more minorities to work than any other program in the history of welfare and yet, in the Stimulus Bill, Obama removed all aspects of that reform bill. The question is why? Why would a President want to see more people on welfare instead of creating a better life for themselves. The answer, in my opinion, is control and political opportunity.
lukewarm, you are not even lukewarm. If Obama removed any aspect from a welfare reform bill it is due to the extreme mess your buddy Bush left us. You and your tea bag friends shouldn't have allowed Bush to go into Iraq.
The only thing that will save us now is legalizing marijuana. People are going to smoke it anyway. Why not get the tax revenue and bail us out with it?
Wow..some of you must really be afraid of Perry that this story brings so much rage out of some of you. What a worthless story. I can't really care less what Perry thinks.
Wow, you must really be afraid of Sarah Palin
Wow, you guys must really be afraid of Donald Trump
Wow, you guys must really be afraid of Herman Cain
Wow, you guys must really be afraid of Ron Paul
Wow, you guys must really be afraid of Michelle Bachman
Wow, you guys must really be afraid of Rick Perry!
need I say more?
Obama will go down as the worst President in the history of our country. He's spent almost as much as Bush in 3 years versus 8 and that's without Katrina, without 9/11, without the Iraq war and without the buildup of the Afghan war. Where is Obama spending all our money? Right down the toilet. He promised "health care for all", he promised to lower the unemployment rate, he promised he wouldn't hire any lobbyists in his administration, he promised to work "with both sides of the aisle" and create "transparency" in Washington. He's promised so many things that he's back tracked on, I don't know how even a Democrat could support him. We had a lot of "fact checking" in the media when Bush was President but that's pretty much a "don't ask, don't tell" policy now.
Looks like they are the party of Drill, Baby, Drill! Kill, Baby, Kill! Well, not babies....just adults....well, maybe some teenagers that have been bad too. This movement gets more frightening by the day. I hope this is not what America is becoming.
.
I am not a huge Perry fan but alot of yall are blowing smoke up where the sun doesnt even shine. Texans execute murders, rapist, really sick horrific people. This has nothing to do with saving an innocent life because he chose not to buy insurance. Really stupid people!
That's a liberal for you.
"Comfort the afflicted".
"Afflict the comfortable".
Houstoncommentator, I'll concede that murders, rapist and horrific people have been executed. I'm just concerned about the ones executed who were actually innocent. No erring on the side of life there.
Robmay, understood, but beside my point. Thanks for commenting
Landoran, You have no idea what I am and I didn't hire you to falsely advertise me either. Stick to the subject of the article.
You don't have to hire me, I work for free when it comes to slamming liberals.
Glad to see you're all about "free speech" down there in Houston.
Did you write the article?
Do you control this post?
Do you own MSNBC?
If the answer is "no" to any, if not all three, then I'll do as I please.
I;m guessing that no one has hired you. Period.
Welcome to your party!
lukewarm: We had a lot of "fact checking" in the media when Bush was President but that's pretty much a "don't ask, don't tell" policy now.
You are so right.
Perry looks kinda Mexicanish....was he born here?
If so, prove it
Show us your Original B-certificate!
Long Form.

Yep, we got some stinking Republicans too who think their only job is to force failure on America and the American People, and as we've seen in past, failure is what Republicans are best at, as well as holding down Working Americans' wages.
Republicans may not have the White House, but they're not without power. The whole world watched as the Republican Tea Baggers brought America to the brink of default, and succeeded at having our credit rating lowered.
If what Republicans have been doing is considered "winning" amongst the Teabagging Republican crowd, then it must be the "Charlie Sheen" version of "winning" where you lose everything in the end.
Well said, Girl!
I'm not a Bachmann fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I do applaud her response to Perry when he told her he was insulted that she insinuated he could be bought for $5,000 (referring the Merck contribution). I was glad when she responded that she was insulted at his legislation to require 12 year old girls to be vaccinated with Gardisil. I started out with some high hopes for Mr. Perry, even thinking of voting outside my Democratic party history, but now I think Mr. Perry is a portrait of contradiction and I haven't yet found a replacement candidate.
It's not like Bachmann is any better when it comes to personal freedoms or individuals rights. She just pulled this Guardasil thing out because it is a prime example of Perry's arrogance and she knows how many people were incensed over it.. Bachmann is also guilty of trying to force people into doing things or believing in her pathetic outdated ideology.
Perry too liberal for the tea party? That says lots about the tea party.
Bachmann is only a few sheets to the right of Perry, but for some right-wing christian extremists, that is just too far too the left of their comfort zone.
And no one seemed to notice the question about the Value Added tax that was sort of endored bysome of the debaters. What is tinteresting is Michelle Bachmann who has such a bill in the hopper said nothing during the exchange, leaving the feild to others. It was a quick brief moment when taxes were plausibly at least discussed.
And whyhas it gone unremarked among liberal commentators? Here right in front of the TEA Party they discuss taxes and no one faints or throws a hissy fit. Isn't hat remrable?
What's even more so is Wolf really moved the debate to a fast round of in consequetial "What would you bring to the White House" so the issue never went anywhere. Perry's answer was innane-he'd bring his wife..And you were hoping he'd bring his mistress? Drean on...how cloying can you get..I mean did michelle say "I'l l bring Marcus to keep me warm at night"?
.
Perry is not as smart as Sarah Palin, and he is a hypocrite!
The really bad news is that he thinks he is smarter than he is.
A dangerous combination -- a not bright hypocrite!
.
This is also the party that does not want to pay for anything. Cut taxes, cut taxes, cut taxes but don't you dare touch my:
Medicare Payments
Social Security Payments
Social Security Long-Term Disability Payments
Medicaid Payments
I didn't see the debate, but have often wondered why hospitals are required under EMTALA to provide care if the person seeking care did not feel motivated to purchase insurance or otherwise have the ability to pay? While I believe the personal mandate as contained the "Affordable Care Act" (many call it ObamaCare) is correct, it would only follow that healthcare providers should not be forced to provide care to someone that does not have the ability to pay and so would be the logical conclusion of overturning the personal mandate.
I swear, IF Rick Perry is lucky enough to get nominated as the Republican's 2012 candidate, I hope Democrats will start showing up at the general debates wearing T-shirts and carrying flags with the number 234 in big numbers. Yeah, he's a right-to-lifer, that's for sure ... I'm just wondering how many of those 234 lethal injections went into men or women that simply couldn't afford nothing better than a court-appointed attorney. Any bets on the fact that probably more than 95% of them had court-appointed attorneys?
If Rick Perry get's the nomination, he will be our next President because our current one has shown for 3 years now that he is inept and not capable of running a country. We are far worse off today than we were when Obama became President. The liberal side show will continue but that's all it's going to be is a side show.
I'm sure most teabaggers would say that if you can't afford anything better than a court-appointed attourney that you deserve to die anyway. This article is hilarious (and scary). The crazies get mad at the crazy guy because he just isn't crazy enough!
Steveo. New here. Didn't know we could share a similar name. Glad to see we DO share similar views of these deplorable people. A kindred spirit.
Revision to my original post ... as of 6:30 PM on Tuesday, Sept 13th, 2011 the number of executions in Texas for Perry just rose to 235, and on Sept 26 ... it will be 236. Perry holds the record for the most state executions by a governor ... bet he's so proud of that! Wonder how many of those were innocent?
This is why I don't think we have to worry about Perry becoming President. I'm no liberal but Perry makes our last Texas Republican President look like a Democrat and neither one are our brightest citizens.
