Last night’s speech gave me some comfort. When Barry gets the boot next November, he has a bright future in used car sales. What had been leaked as a $300 billion Son of Porkulus bill ballooned into an even more obese $450 billion POS. Where were all the “fresh proposals” Barry promised?? LMAO@BARRY:

Obama's three-day Midwestern bus tour didn't get much attention (other than a face-to-face disagreement with a Tea Partier), and for good reason: he's saving all his new job growth ideas for a speech in September, right after the Labor Day holiday. The Associated Press, which was informed by an unnamed senior administration official, reports that "all of Obama's proposals would be fresh ones, not a rehash of plans he has pitched for many weeks and still supports." But they seem, on first glance, a bit familiar: "The president's plan is likely to contain tax cuts, jobs-boosting infrastructure ideas and steps that would specifically help the long-term unemployed," relays the AP.

And his bogus claim that it is all paid for reminded me of watching Popeye cartoons as a kid where Wimpy would say:

"I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today"

Wimpy is soft-spoken, very intelligent, and well educated, but also cowardly, very lazy, overly parsimonious and utterly gluttonous (with other peoples tax dollars). He is also something of a scam artist and, especially in the newspaper strip, can be notoriously underhanded at times.

Sounds just like Barry!!!!!

LUVB,

Exactly!!!

These GOP scumbags were willing to allow default to prevent a 4% tax increase on income over $250,000 yet they are going to allow a 3% tax increase on income under $106,000. Unbelievable!

spg64 - you are misinformed which is typical of most of America. First off, the 6.2% payroll tax was reduced to 4.2%, clearly that is 2%. Secondly, both DEMS and REPS supported this and it ONLY applies to the first $106,800 makes because after that threshold, NO ONE PAYS this tax. REPS also support continuing this tax break which in my opinion is a joke anyway since it is taking MORE money away from our dysfunctional Social Security System.

In any case, clearly you close your yap and first find out the facts before going on about something you clearly know nothing about.

Luv B & Spy

The GOP response was there are some things in there where there is common ground.

Second, There are two common themes here that don't work.

  1. make the rich pay and big corporations pay - big delusion - in the end everyone pays for it because they sell you the goods. Increasing their taxes only increases what you pay.
  2. One year breaks - businesses work on plans in terms of 3 or 5 years. Giving them a break for one year doesn't make years 2 - 5 work. They won't move unless they are certain to be profitable enough for years 2 - 5.

The problem with Obama is he always speaks well (campaigned well, got elected,) but he cannot lead and cannot implement anything. All of you who keep blaming the Republican Congress keep forgetting that for 2 years, Obama had a Democrat House and Democrat Senate. Why did unemployment keep going up during that time? Why did government spending keep going up during that time? Obama did nothing before becomming President. He did not run a state or a business. While a professor, he did not publish any papers or books. He skipped many votes as Senator. Again, Obama is an idea guy, but he cannot get anything done because he does not have the experience and he cannot lead!

The republicans or at the least the none progressive or communists ones have to vote it down and the clown knows it and is counting on it so he can use it as his campaign platform. His so called jobs bill, which is just more of the same BS, more regulations more spending, more of the same that got us to this position. How can he go up there promoting jobs while he's standing in the way of boeing bringing jobs to south carolina, or his manufacturing czar the ceo of GE taking the companies tech to china to build planes and compete against the american company boeing. He rambled on about the small businesses, funny didn't he declare war on the small businesses in the time he was wasting forcing obamacare on us instead of working on the economy. You want to see the real obama's all you had to do is look at his wife's face after he said "one nation, under god, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all" she looked like she was going to be sick. He was raised by american hating communists radicals, sort them out as friends and educators and they're goal is to turn this country toward a corrupt communist economy by feeding off of our ignorance, greed, and selfishness. This is just another campaign speech designed to turn the voters against the republicans and tea party movement when they vote it down it's all propaganda and Just remember what wilson and hitler did with propaganda.

Maybe because those that block don't "discuss", they just go to their magic bad of Foxnews talking points and deliver like clock-work.

They're rancor is making America sick.

Kumar, There werent 2 years of majority. you must have a supermajority in the Senate to do anything that is fillibuster proof( PS check it out a record number of fillibusters by this senate), and when Ted Kennedy died they did not have it. Either you dont know that or you are a liar.

Cut up the credit card now! NO MORE CREDIT; Or Uncle Sam will have to file for bankruptcy because of the continued spending.

The same failed plans brought back up again for another round. It "gives" the appearance he's doing something, but he's not. What we need, is to hear more about the Republican's plans that's not getting the Media play since it is not offered by Liberals. Let's see more about that in the press!

luvboxer-3198619............... "he gave a great speech".........."The repubs will vote it down".....................

What was so great about it? Delivering a passionate speech doesn't make the speech great. If that were true, every successful salesperson in the country could give a great speech. What has he said that was NEW? Why was such a big deal made of this? Why was a joint session of Congress called in? This was politics as usual for a person running for office. From what I heard there is a lot of "we'll have to fill in the blanks later".

Some of the things he spoke of is a true indicator that he and many politicians have no idea about the actual business world. Tax breaks (or holidays) do not make for a good business module. Business leaders need to forecast beyond today, tomorrow, next year. They need to be able to have certainty of what will be happening 3-5 years in the future at a minimum. All of his proposed "tax breaks" are temporary. Business can't guess about future finances. I like his idea about giving a tax break to a company who hires the long term unemployed person. But, how much? How long will it last? Who will oversee this and how? Again, we need concrete ideas instead of a lot of "we'll in the blanks later". Businesses that have outsourced manufacturing needs a reason to bring back their base and employ people here again. What was said that will assure Americans that this will happen? Nothing that I heard. He should have came up with substantial tax breaks and/or permanent ones for every company that ends foreign manufacturing and brings jobs back to America.

I wonder who will sponser this bill into congress, and if they will do it as obama wants it?

While the right may embrace the tax credits/incentives, I hardly see them endorsing more of the same things that made up the 2009 stimulas act.

Really now, job preservation of teachers and first responders? Isn't that a state function rather than federal.

Extending unemployment benefits while saying little on how to help the long termed unemployed? If this plan is such a good job creator, why do we need to extend benefits?

Infrastructure and school repair spending is going to create jobs in the short term? I really, really doubt it as the local shool boards, local building codes and state DOT's will have a lot to say about it. Not to mention that winter in the northern locales is approaching.

Passing the buck to congress to find additional budgetary cuts may be safe for obama politically, but given congresses and obamas reluctance to come to grips with the FY2011 budget and debt ceiling approval debacles can we really expect this to be done? Trying to borrow $$$ from future cuts really is lame as one has to hope that future legislation will support it.

What is obama trying to hide? I mean really how many hundreds, if not thousands of pages of regulations will be needed to implement it? Obamacare and the financial reform regs have still not been completely written, now obama wants passage right away?

Not really sure why obama wants to demand action this day since the immediate flashing of cash does little to entice jobs today unless one is a streetwalker or in the escort service. Even those results would be transitory in nature.

two final points are that ...

Obama and company have chosen to ignore that after oct 1 we do not have a FY2012 budget in place because the senate democrats won't present an alternative to what the house passed early in 2011.

The FED has not been able to encourage much private sector job growth with QE1 & 2. I mean really wasn't the FEDs mandate to deal with both monetary policy and job growth? Didn't bernanke already say that FED options were really, really limited?

Obama is a disgrace! He campaigns from the US Capitol. He starts talking about election 14 months away. Also, in his State of the Union in 2010, he admonishes the Supreme Court from the US Capitol. Presidents have always attacked Congress (though usually not during State of the Union) and Congress has always attacked the President...BUT NO PRESIDENT HAS ATTACKED THE SUPREME COURT. OBAMA IS A DISGRACE!!!

I am sick and tired of hearing the same lies from the right. You need a refresher course in the truth. The Republicans got us in this situation not the Democracts. It was the Reps who invaded Iraq illegally. It was the Reps who waisted our most precious resources, our young men and women in uniform, and our treasury to pay for this war. They took their eye off Ben Ladan because it would be too hard to accomplish his capture or death. The Republicans do not give a damn about the middle class or this country. They are selfish greedy pigs.

How quickly we forget who created our horrific financial mess in the first place. We live in a world where we humans have developed the patience of a gnat and like spoiled children we want what we want, and we want it now. The estimated cost of both wars is upwards of 5 Trillion dollars, costs that Obama did not incur and had nothing to do with. Our president also inherited the worst financial crisis of our life time (at least for most of us) and it would appear that most of us think he is supposed to wave his magic wand and make it all go away. It appears that most of us are clueless as to the enormity of it all and what it will take to resolve this mess. GET A GRIP! The fact is that all of the effects of our financial crises haven’t even hit us yet! To top off the biggest frustration of us all is that we have put elected officials in office that don’t work for the people that they represent. To them it’s the same ongoing game about Republicans or Democrats who concern themselves with their own agenda’s and not that of the dire needs American people! Our problems are not Republican or Democrat, they are American! The stimulus package DID WORK! Without it MANY MORE Americans would be hurting. Our mess would be much bigger than it is now. Americans are always complaining about how we are always giving handouts to other countries and seem to scream louder when we give one to our own people. What’s wrong with us? We need to support Obama’s new plan. It helps a lot of people. No, it doesn’t solve all of our problems but it does help a good deal. We will not solve all of our troubles over night but we must keep chipping away at them till we get back on track. If we want progress we must insist that our government officials stop fighting like out of control, unsupervised preschoolers and finally do what they were elected to do! Otherwise make sure every single one of them are voted out. We must INSIST that they act now, not a year from now or later. Every day they fight over petty crap the people of our great country loose ground that will become more and more difficult to regain. Want a voice, a real voice? Speak up and make yourself heard and tell your leaders to do the right thing!

How DARE he call them out! He's a law professor and they don't fool him one bit (unlike Kumar). And, BTW, he was absolutely right in terms of the law and his indignation. I suppose if this rah-rah makes the unwashed masses feel better, then it was a good speech. As far as substance, meh.

I own a business and heard nothing that makes me want to venture out and invest in anything. No, I'll just sit tight until this guy and his band of egg-head theoreticians wander out of D.C. My grandfather, also a successful business owner, used to warn me about "throwing good money after bad", and frankly that's what it sounds like POTUS is suggesting. He has no other ideas, so he's just going to try spending more. Wonderful.

Spending on infrastructure isn't productive. It's essentially just busy-work. Repaving roads that don't need it, putting in sidewalks, and doing redundant maintenance work don't do a thing to improve GDP. This will all just be money shoved down the union rat-hole.

Mr. President, if you were truly as smart as you and your sycophants claimed, maybe you'd come up with some original ideas to do things to pull us out of the mire, not just let us swim in circles in it. For example, how about understanding that it's mining, oil, forestry, farming, and manufacturing that are the only real generators of wealth? If you want to blow hundreds of billions of dollars why not create, oh, say a program to subsidize the purchase of modern machinery so our industries can again be competitive with foreign manufacturers? How about investing in engineering and technology education? How about working WITH industry to harvest our abundant resources in safe and environmentally-sound ways instead of just saying "no"? If you want to build, build nuclear power plants. Our friends in France use them quite safely, and they ARE safe as long as you don't build them over a fault line. I could go on. I'm like that. An idea machine. But you'd never come up with that, Mr. President. Because you're an effete dabbler, a dilletante who's never really produced anything or done an honest day's work. In manufacturing, you'd be that guy we stuck in "special projects" so you could m*sturbate all day but didn't bother anyone else.

Failure. Abject failure. Can't wait to fire you next year, Mr. President. Not that the current crop of Repub nitwits is much better. Yikes, we're screwed.

Mr. Tom, i have a hard time believing you are a business owner. It seems to me businesses does business in good times and bad, in wars, in recessions, even in depressions. Businesses react to markets and search for new opportunities. What they can't afford to do is "sit tight" for two years. They are always opportunities and ways to move forward.

And please, the only real wealth is "mining, oil, forestry, farming, and manufacturing". So its extractive industries and manufacturing and nothing else matters? You are so misinformed. Most of the industries you mentioned are competitive and extremely efficient. Would it surprise you to know that the U.S. has greater output value in manufacturing than China (as a year ago, you can easily look it up)? U.S. manufacturers use less employees to produce goods, and thy produce more high end products that has greater value. China may pass us, but the U.S. does produce a lot of good. Likewise our farm sector is extremely efficient and productive, so we do it with far less labor than 20, 50, or 100 years ago. It is innovation and technology that will keep these sectors productive and competitive in the future. But neither will generate large numbers of jobs.

Please stop whining and focus on your business. Stop insulting our president and spreading falsehoods.

If I were a politician, I'd disregard the A and F votes, and pay a lot of attention to the people who voted B, C and D said.

Radicals don't matter for Presidential elections. Not even in the slightest. Independent votes is how it will be won.

How amazing is it that a certain group of people so quickly and conveniently forgot which Party got us into ALL the messes that Omama is not being criticized for not fixing with a wave of his magic wand. It took Bush 8 years to destroy not only our country, but our world-wide image, the value of our dollar, JOBS, HOMES. And now, Obama is criticized by the republicans for not fixing everything in 2 or 3 years. How can they live with themselves? Talk about denial. What gets me the most is that they call themselves 'Conservatives.' Yet, they are the first to go to war (even if international inspectors tell them there are NO weapons of mass destruction!), they are the first to willingly sacrifice the established lives of mothers and fathers and productive citizens, while doing everything they possibly can to save an unborn fetus, or even a stem cell. Last, but not least, they are the first to express HATE, RACISM, and Bias.... and then do it in the name of God. If there is a God, he can only be shaking his head!

Martin, it was the Democrats with the bogus loans, led by Barney Frank. And no, there really wasn't a surplus, it was selective accounting.

We did enter 2 wars without allocating money, but no one could figure out we needed to do this? The House never figured this out? Let alone, who was planning on 9/11?!? Bush did not create the Recession. Trade deals and the Unions did. And the Trade deals started with Clinton. This is burned in my memory as within 3 months of the signing, the first of our best jobs left the country. The desire to compete on the global level has, in a way been our undoing. You can't have Union greed and cheap prices for goods. (Or the higher cost of living in America than a fair portion of the world.)

And you comments concerning "Get out of the way of Business" No regulations, no oversight is mis-directed. No one has actually asked for that in an arbitrary manner. The govt, in some ways is standing in the way of Business, a prime example is the passing of Obamacare. It has caused a tremendous ripple through all Industries as it will have incredible impact on business. Already, small businesses are struggling with the increased cost. And they are writing thousands of new pages to explain the first 2000 pages. There was never a reason it should take 2000 pages to improve health care in America, which, by the way, most says will not happen.

There are regulations that are really stupid and wasteful. Let me tell you about one I deal with. I have to inform the govt. if our Insurance prescription drug program is "credible" or not, as compared to Medicare part D. And pass out a notice of what "may" happen if they sign up. Why?!? Are they keeping count? Why is it our responsibility to tell our employees if Medicare D coverage is better than the company coverage? Anyone can take both plans are determine for themselves.

DB- make the rich pay and big corporations pay - big delusion - in the end everyone pays for it because they sell you the goods. Increasing their taxes only increases what you pay.

This sounds like saying giving big corporations tax cuts makes products cheaper!!! Hmm when they were getting these tax cuts, did the price go down for consumers or did Big Business give out BIGGER BONUSES?!?!?

Let them raise their prices, it will just bring back TONS of small businesses to replace the Wal-mart's and the Corporate Thieves that are ruining this country. Lets see them try to raise their prices and they wont sell a thing, because compitition isnt going to go away, it will increase which is exactly what we need.

Willowbrook,

Your memory really needs work... do you just make this stuff up as you go?

Yes, the Democrats sponsored legislation that told the banks to quit discriminating against minorities with loans. But it wasn't the Democrats that allowed Wall Street to create securities based on mortgages and then lie about them to sell them. We've had real estate bubbles before and could have easily made it through this one had it not taken our financial system to it's knees. No, getting aggressive with loans sounded good to everyone, including banks... in fact, they went well beyond the rules set up and falsified many of the loans they no longer had to keep or be responsible for. The bottom line? Greed and lack of regulation took us down and caused the recession. Unions and trade agreements had nothing to do with it. Neither did Social Security or Medicare or unemployment or abortion or the Muslims or minorities or Obama or the Democrats.

No. If you want to talk the blame game, blame Bush for decimating the regulatory environment that allowed our collapse and Bush for NOT FUNDING Homeland Security, Afghanistan, Iraq, Medicaid, and unnecessary tax-cuts (all adding up to the "Bush Debt Train) that created the majority of our debt.

But in any event, please recall facts as they are, not as you wish them to be.

I believe also that one of the Supreme Court Justices also was a little disrespectful during one of the President's speeches, but that was okay too, right? You need to quit criticizing our president for the same things that you Republicans have done in the past!! It's getting a little tiring hearing such disrespect for a man who is the President of the United States! You may not have voted for him, but the majority of the United States DID...and you should respect that! If he is not re-elected, then you can cheer, but until then, at least have the common courtesy to RESPECT THE POSITION!!

Mr. Tom: If you own a business and expect to sit on your butt for the next 14 months, thinking that by not hiring anyone or doing anything, you'll make the president look bad, then you're sincerely hurting only yourself! If your business can wait 14 months to see which way the elections go, you're going to be in for a RUDE surprise!! The main reason that MOST businesses aren't hiring and are sitting around counting their profits is ONLY because they think it makes the president look bad and will get hiM ousted from office. But, most of America is NOT as stupid as you think we are -- we KNOW what you're doing and why you're doing it. Again, you aren't fooling anyone, and you're only hurting yourself, your business, and your most-likely overworked employees!! Good luck with that!

LMarc - but that's the whole point, the banks weren't discriminating. Now we have people who never should have received loans who have lost their homes. Some people just aren't meant to be home owners. If they will not do what it takes to get a loan in the traditional manner, exceptions shouldn't be made for them. The exceptions were made and everybody lost. There are reasons why banks had criteria for obtaining a loan. It was to help ensure the person could actually pay the loan back. The "encouragment" by the govt. to make these loans was the beginning of the end. The more rope the govt. gave, the more some abused the system. And you do realize that it was the mortgage companies causing the most trouble?

It was not Bush's role to fund anything. Funding starts in the House of Representatives, no where else.

Oh, and the majority of the debt has been created during the current Administration. And the President wants to spend even more. This Administration, by itself has created more debt than all those previous.

Willowbrook,

I can buy into your Monday-morning quarterbacking that the banks got too aggressive, but it's really questionable as to whether there was any "forcing" involved. Instead, they were "allowed" to make these loans, had nobody watching them, and stretched the rules to make seriously aggressive and ill advised loans. The system itself encouraged this behavior in that loans were immediately sold with the originator retaining NO responsibility. BUT... I still maintain that we would have easily recovered from the bubble had Wall Street not created the derivatives.

It was not Bush's role to fund anything. Funding starts in the House of Representatives, no where else. Oh, and the majority of the debt has been created during the current Administration. And the President wants to spend even more. This Administration, by itself has created more debt than all those previous.

This is where we part. How was it not Bush's responsibility to fund while now it is Obama's? Wasn't it Cheney that said "deficits don't matter"? It was Bush's wishes that the funding be carried outside of the budgetary process and NOT be funded because of the fragile economy at the time. Many, including me, might well agree with that reasoning. But to say that the majority of debt has been created by Obama is less than half true. The debt was a direct result of either carry-over from the Bush Debt Train (Homeland Security, 2 wars, Medicaid), the continuation of the Bush tax cuts, and the lack of revenue due to the collapsed economy handed Obama. To illustrate my point, how different might it have been had McCain been elected? The answer is that it wouldn't be very different... even McCain couldn't have stopped the Bush Debt Train.

    #1.43 - Fri Sep 9, 2011 6:24 PM EDT

My comment is meant to show where funding starts, not in the White House. Just like last night, Obama repeatedly said, "pass this bill." As last I've heard, there is no bill. The House of Representatives has to create the bill, supposedly from his bullet points.

If you notice, I said Administration, not President. Our current President was in favor of the stimulus and Obamacare spending, and choose to sign the bills. He had a lot of help getting that spending passed, principally the Democratic Party in Congress. Bush couldn't sign off on the war spending if didn't receive the bill. There's where I see a difference.

When we first went to War after 9/11, the majority signed off on it. It wasn't a secret, so the House of Rep. should have taken action.

As for your points concerning Obama having carryover from the Bush administration.... That is, in part his party's fault. All business, when they realized Obama was going to be President, shut things down to the skinny. Why? They already could see Obama's anti-business attitude. Business has to take care of itself, and that they did. The highest job losses came after this point in time. Had we not had an anti-business future leader, thing could have been somewhat better. (No, I'm not going to take up a comparison of McCain to Obama, not the point) After 3 years, business still is protecting itself as their prediction was true. Couple that with his lack of understanding how business works....(small business doesn't pay Capital Gains tax, and won't hire more employees if they have access to more credit...and dumping billions in green energy companies during the stimulus, that are now going bankrupt without the govt. lifeline.) hasn't helped. Bottom line, companies won't hire until they have increased orders they can't fill otherwise. How to acheive that, for the most part is the answer Obama has not been able to come up with. He needs to look beyond his like-minded cabinet and listen to those who are successful in business. If he knew how they became successful, he might do better.

Congressman Bohener stated on TV that he would never let anything pass that would make the Pres look good. He and the other tea party members would destroy the country if they thought it would win them the 2012 election. I did not vote for Pres Obama and am a lifelong Republican. However, I think that anyone who would stand in front of the whole county admit that the country meant so little to them that they would destroy it before doing anything to help save it should be run out of the country. And, should he and the likes of him, be reelected then the country deserves to go down the tube.

Right on. It is no wonder the speech took the turn it did. He was pandering to his base. Union's, unemployed, handout recipients. The bigger problem for him is that these are still in the minority and he needs to figure out how to reach the thinking majority. The part he can't grasp is that with each speech that majority gets bigger. He is a speech maker. It was the speech making that got him elected in '08. It will be the speech making that makes him unemployed in '12. The speeches are just rhetoric with no active substance to make anything happen.

What's wrong with this country is I should be an inspiration. No, I didn't start as an illiterate, and frankly I'm not in what I'd call the upper classes. And it's no miracle, lots of my fellow business owners started from humble beginnings. One of my best customers started as a machinist out of high school and through the sweat of his brow and natural business talent has become quite successful. No government handout, ever.

And the answer to whose Monica I was is easy. My customers. And it wasn't a fast rise, it's taken over 30 years. What's so fishy about that?

Mr. tom...blah blah blah. Many start with nothing and have no opportunities to get anywhere. Some manage to and cool, and some don't get the chance. Bully for you, blah blah blah. I started with nothing too and I own a business now, but it didn't mean I didn't need help along the way and you did too. Whether you admit it or not you got some break/s somewhere if you truly came from nothing. Seriously, you had hand me downs...wheeo. I had no food, two worn outfits, one pair of too-tight shoes, lived in horrible places with very abusive parents. I was lucky that they did value education and that I kept trying and am very stubborn, but I can't say if NO ONE had ever given me a tiny break here and there I wouldn't have starved.

So get off your high horse and join reality. Some come in privileged and have no clue how most live, some come in with a nice amount with some opportunities, some hardly have anything but get a few breaks to make it, and some just never get anything at all. And if a person is only taught that crime or other unhealthy behavior is how to exist of course s/he will do that. So how about instead of blaming people we make sure education, nutrition, counseling, and opportunities are available so people CAN get a break and get out of misery? It not only is the right thing to do but gets people of that welfare you hate and helps the country as a whole.

No, it's a whole lot easier to call people names and rewrite history to suit your agenda, but the fact is those who have made it DID get some kind word, a few meals, some education, or something along the way. No, handouts with no efforts don't work, but I can't believe how many say they are decent people and have such ignorant, hard hearts. I am embarrassed to be human sometimes with all the hatred that spews from so many.

Until a president's policies get voted in no one can say how they would have worked out, and everything has been blocked, crappy amendments added, so with the FACT that the whole time since 2008 the agenda has been to defeat one person (whether I agree or disagree with him isn't even the point) how can anyone say his policies succeed or fail? It's Congress that has failed...what a crock of crap gets spewed here by so many. Look at yourselves in the mirror and be honest about your own behavior during the last few years and your life. Have you lived with compassion and honesty or learned a few party lines and kept repeating them? Is your heart hard toward people who truly do need help or are you stone? For Pete's sakes!!!! We have to work together if we want this country to be prosperous and peaceful, and calling names and making up crap isn't how it will happen.

I repeat that I own a business. So don't bother to blah blah blah about that nonsense and bleeding hearts or handouts. How about some respect and cooperation, fairness and reason...truth...instead of just screaming nastiness at each other?????

The issue at hand is not to bash the small startup that makes good, it is to limit the overwhelming bully when it gets to the mega corporate level. Small business is a good thing, but BIG business is too corrupt to put up with. It is apparent to many that America is no longer under the democratic control of the people (remember the Declaration and Constitution?) but run by and for the bloated corporate world. I certainly do not want to go back to the outmoded economic and political models of the 18th Century, but I think we have learned a few things in the intervening centuries to keep the basic values of our country alive. Just a couple of things to do right off the bat, end campaign funding as it now exists and put the lobbyists in jail for blatant bribery!

        #2.14 - Fri Sep 9, 2011 5:28 PM EDT

Unfortunately, most of you disliked President Obama from DAY ONE, and ANYTHING that he did or tried to do was blocked because of that dislike. I've NEVER seen so much disrespect for a president in my entire 65 years of life, and it's disgusting! You may not like the man, but PLEASE respect his position. He was the winner of a majority vote....get over it! If Congress would take as much time to work together as they do to put up brick walls, we would have solved most of the ills in this country. But, no, instead, they want to do everything in their power to make President Obama look bad....even at the detriment of the livelihoods of the American middle class. I hope that you're proud of what you've allowed your politicians to do! It certainly hasn't helped ANYONE and has done more harm than help!! So, you keep on disliking the man and disrespecting him, but have the common courtesy to realize the REAL reason you don't like him, and that's because he's not white (and I hate to bring that up, but that's the ONLY reason there's so much anomosity within the Republican ranks)! You might as well fess' up and admit it because that's the ONLY reason -- you know it and I know it! The GOP/TP needs to get off their collective butts and start HELPING to find a solution and QUIT being the problem!! You would certainly HELP your next Republican candidate make an honest showing during the next elections rather than the one that they're putting forth now!!

Mr. Tom, I am curious about this sentence you wrote: "One of my best customers started as a machinist out of high school and through the sweat of his brow and natural business talent has become quite successful. No government handout, ever."

Did this individual happen to attend a PUBLIC high school? Because if so, then your statement "no government handout, ever" is a clear fallacy. Public school is one of those "socialist" government programs that Americans today totally take for granted and most never even pause to consider. Remember, in the "olden" days, only the children of the very wealthy (lords, big landowners, etc.) had the luxury of being educated. Everyone else was pretty much illiterate and ignorant for life. Then the idea of free childhood education came along (definitely a radical notion for its time), and our American forebears made it law. I wonder, how would you and your customer be doing today if you had not gone to school AT ALL? Can you imagine it? If you'd never learned to read, never learned any math, knew nothing about the world around you.... If you think about it honestly, you will realize that you owe your success to a "government program" much more than you ever realized. Without that free education, you could not possibly have become as successful as you are today.

By the way, if you and your friend also travelled to those public schools on public roads, if you have been protected all your lives by police and firefighters ("public" servants), if you have ever gone to a hospital or taken a single medication (produced through government-funded research and tested by the government for safety) or ridden in an airplane, car, or train (ditto), if you have ever bought safe, bacteria-free food from a grocery store, and if you have EVER used a single park, beach, or hiking trail, then you are recipients of "government handouts" in a multitude of other ways as well. Public healthcare is just about the only thing missing.

I believe government programs should be about creating opportunities for people. When folks take advantage of those opportunities, as you took advantage of public schooling, then good things result for both the individual and the larger society. What I hear from around the country these days is that the economy is so collapsed in some areas that there are simply not enough opportunities for hard-working, honest people---like you---available. They have done nothing wrong---like you, they went to school, worked hard, worked smart, and did their best with the opportunities they had---but because the economy has shrunk, there simply aren't enough opportunities out there right now. These folks had decent jobs, didn't play fast and loose with their money, and didn't get ridiculous mortgages on houses they couldn't afford, but now they are simply caught in the gears of a bad economy. They are desperate for opportunities to help themselves. THAT'S what I heard Obama saying this bill would do: generate more opportunities for people to help themselves. Opportunities for decent, hard-working, good honest American folks JUST LIKE YOU to get back on their feet again. Just as you got a great opportunity at a better life from government-funded public school, these folks need their government to help create some new opportunities to replace the ones extinguished by this economy, so that they can WORK again and get back to being contributing members of our society.

The richest people in our country---those in the top few percentiles---are getting richer and richer and richer, while EVERYONE else is getting poorer, and this gap is growing at an increasing rate. To anyone with any sense of morality whatsoever, this is clearly NOT RIGHT. Special tax breaks for the wealthy (a.k.a. "trickle-down economics") do NOT work, and this widening gap proves it.

More spending for federal programs that don't address the real problem.  Businesses are unwilling to hire because al the new regulations, healthcare, and taxes have them afraid to expand.  The best thing government can do is stop strangling the private sector and stop demonizing and confiscating profit.  Let those who produce feel free to produce more and stop the class warfare.

It gets old hearing that over and over. Obama = President for 3 years = added $4 trillion to the natl. debt, 9.2% unemployment, amped up a war or 2, open borders, s&p downgrade, calls for him to return the Nobel Peace Prize, Union bail outs, bank bail outs, and lots of vacations for him & the Mrs.( and 30 extra friends) on the tax payer dime.

a vote for 4 more years of failure = stupid.

LEONA, thank you very much for your post. I agree with you all the way. Why people hate Bush so much and blame everything on him all the time is beyond my thinking. Like I've always said, for humans, it is impossible to be either right or wrong 100% of the time. But Obama people don't think that way. Could you imagine what would happen if so many people said "mean" things about Obama?? Every black organization in the world would make a huge deal out of it. But 90% of the people bash and insult Bush, and nothing is done by anyone to stop this. Obama has done so many things wrong that it is unbelieveable that people don't see this. We'll take a couple of easy subjects here, Bush took vacations and Obama took vacations, both men are on the same course of taking the same amount of vacations, but Bush is wrong. Obama has had black only invited guests to the White House, if Bush had white invited guests only he would have been stoned to death. Obama and the Mrs, EVEN INVITED AND HAD A CONVICTED FELON at the White House for dinner. But it was okay, he is a black rapper. If Bush would have had a white convicted felon rock star or country star, he would have been dragged from the White House and beaten. And finally, Bush was president for 2 terms, so he had to be doing something correct. And nobody voted for Bush for the only reason that he was white, but many, many people said the only reason they voted for Obama was because he was black. In the city where I live, many blacks said it was the first time in their life that they ever voted in their lives, and most were in their 30's to 60's. So at 63 years old (me, that is), can someone please tell me what I have missed here with this Bush hate, and this Obama worship??!!! No matter what Obama does, everyone says, that was the best ever. A couple of months ago, on Newsvine, someone posted that Mr & Mrs Obama were the FIRST family inhistory of the White House to have any class and intelligence. How could any half educated person make an insulting and untrue statement like that? Tell me Bush haters.

Didi, how could you make such a statement as you did??? I thought this country always voted for their government officials. I never knew that a president was "given" the presidency. This is another thing I missed somewhere along the line.

He is right, we (the American people) know he's right. He was very Presidential, very commanding, no BS, just reality. Now lets see how the GOP and Tea Party spin this. Will they put aside their petty BS and do something good for this country or will they continue to play political games and blame the President for everything. Will they put Grover Norquist before the American people again, or will they do something. Right now, the GOP and Tea Party has done nothing but hurt this country. Here is their chance to do something real and good. Do they want the White House so bad that they will continue to "do nothing but obstruct" or do they care about this country and its people. There is no argument for doing nothing or to let the economy continue to languish without doing anything but budget cut, we need jobs, we need them now, this is real, this is not politics. Will they step up or will they continue to make things worse?

Simple math Bush lead us into a war thatm has cost Americans tax payers 5 trillion at the least and because President Obama asked for a stimulus package and now asking for 4.5 billion to help the middle class citizens. Why do the wealthy pay less taxes as a middle class person, Why do large coporations pay less taxes than small businesses, Why Bush can pull Americans into an unjust war, that has cost US more money than the last two Democratic Presidents put together. Why The President of the United States Of America cannot get congress to vote his way unless he meets them halfway. In the bible it says that greed will destroy this world. Tear down countries so the company you own can rebuild, Buy all water from natural water ways all over the world, Bills and Laws and Sanctions that Bush signed when he was in office is tearing this world apart. President Obama is doing all that he can but Congress is not and will not let him let look as intelligent as he really is. What is the TEAPARTY about Really!!!!!!

The pathetic teabagger controlled GOP will surely block these fine initiatives as they have blocked everything since the President took office.

You know the pathetic GOP and the even more pathetic idiots in this thread blasting our President have no compassion for the jobless or the poor. My only hope is that President Obama takes this plan to every corner of the USA as he said he would. Take off your cloves and hit the GOP in the groin between now and election day.

I suppose we can blame the founding fathers for the failure of this administration. Perhaps we can blame Paul Revere for alerting us that the British were coming. No wait lets blame the original Boston Tea party. Really how far back do you need to go to show your biased slant for this failed president. George Bush had his problems, no doubt. But it is time to let the hatred for him go and let BHM be a big boy and grow up. It is time he stood before the American people and say, "I screwed up." Take the blame for what he has done and hasn't done. Please stop with the making excuses for him. I would suspect that if you kid threw a rock through a neighbors window you would be in the neighbor's face screaming, "Well, if you hadn't put that window there in the first place the rock would have done no damage". It is time to put fault where it belongs. In Obama's house.

Hmmm...perhaps you should be looking at the people in Congress who are hell bent on destroying this country and its citizens. Quite frankly, the Republicans have been in charge of Congress since January and they have not put forth one bill to get this economy going. As a matter of fact they have done everything within their power to slow and stop this economy so they can ensure President Obama's defeat in 2012. That's the truth of the matter.

Quite frankly, they should be opposed to what he's doing. It failed miserably the first time and they are smart enough to know that doing it again will make matters worse. All of our policies over the last 70 years are failing right before our eyes and the last 3.5 years of his policies have made them even worse. If he had worked on real change that he campaigned on instead of just campaigning some more for re-election, I would have probably given him another chance. But he didn't. That's why he won't be getting my vote. That's my truth.

I guess you missed the CBO report before his speech:

A new Congressional Budget Office (CBO) report estimates that the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) increased the number of people employed by between 1.0 million and 2.9 million jobs as of June. [1]

The CBO report indicates that ARRA succeeded in its primary goal of protecting the economy during the worst of the recession. As the economy recovers, ARRA's effects will continue to decrease. CBO estimates that ARRA's impact on employment peaked in the third quarter of 2010, when between 1.4 million and 3.6 million people owed their jobs to the Recovery Act.

Ahh, screw facts right? That's what the tea party and republicans like to do any way. Spare me, you weren't going to vote for him regardless in 2012, I don't care if unemployment dropped to 2%.

I suggest you contact Senate Majority leader Harry Reid's office and find out how many House bills have been sitting on his desk that have not been introduced in the Senate for consideration. I would suspect you could not back them all home in the back of a truck. Talk about obstructing. I wonder if there are two definitions for obstructing. One for the conservatives and one for the liberals. Wait, Webster just informed me there is only one.

I read the report. There were three goals of the ARRA:save jobs and create new ones, stimulate the economy and create more growth, create transparency in gov't spending.

The key wording in the report, I thought was"That report said that although the effects of the stimulus are waning". This would lead me to believe that the stimulis goals have all together failed. And if it was such sweeping success, why do we need another one?

I am really this informed. I research and read everything for myself. So your saying we needed more than 2 trillion for it to have worked? Uh-huh.

The stimulis did not achieve the goals for which it was aimed at. A economic stimulis is to get the economy going, you know "prime the pump", and make it self-sustaining. If he is asking for more, then it failed.

Are you, or are you not, aware that massive job losses turned into small gains after the stimulus? It did exactly what it was supposed to do. Remember the saying, a penny saved is a penny earned? A job saved is a job earned.

Dinh: Apparently, you haven't bothered to look at the charts put out by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Under Bush, we were losing jobs every month and it was getting worse (although the GOP won't admit it). When the stimulus went into effect, we stopped losing jobs and started gaining jobs, and was getting better. The leveling off is what happened as the stimulus started to wind down: job creation leveled off at too low a level. The conclusion: THE STIMULUS WORKED BUT WAS NOT ENOUGH!!

These things really matter. We all want to fix the terrible problems the country has, but it is so important to know just what the problems are before you decide how to fix them. Otherwise, the things you DO try to solve problems might make them worse. If you get tricked into thinking that President Obama has made things worse and that we should all go back to what we were doing before President Obama -- tax cuts for the rich, giving giant corporations and Wall Street everything they wanted -- when those are the things that caused the problems in the first place, then we will be in REAL trouble!!

Apparently, this is what the GOP/TP do NOT understand...their constant blocking of President Obama's plans and failing to compromise or come up with a plan of their own isn't helping ANYONE! We're at a total standstill, and until both parties get off their collective butts and work together....we're not going anywhere fast! And, as a note, most of the businesses are sitting on a vast amount of profits and not hiring ONLY because they think it makes our president look bad -- well, we're not ALL that stupid. We know what they are doing, and it doesn't make them look all that great, especially when election day comes around!! They'd do more for themselves if they quit blocking everything and come up with some viable plans (I'm still waiting for all the jobs they promised when they were elected in 2010 -- remember their Pledge to America?)

The President should have made it clear, (SLAVERY) is wrong. And that the REPUB's need to get off their self pity act (ASS) and work for the good of this country..The President has said that this political (HOSTAGE) is hurting 90% of all Americans. The rich and wealthy (POLITICIANS) are not affected. The rich and Wealthy should pay 20% across the board taxes on all of their property. And the poor and working class only 7%, which would make the tax more equal. As the President said in previous speach's, it's time for the R & W to pay their fair share.

They want a two class system, them (the rich) and us (the poor); why can't they pay their fair share of taxes. it's sad when a secretary pay more taxes than her employer who takes home three times more than she.

The double standard here stinks beyond the pale. Obama is doing more posturing to the wealthy than anyone. If you have forgot, Imelt is head of GE, who by the way paid absolutely 0 in taxes. Oh and arent they the one who is closing one of their US manufacturing plants and rebuilding it in China for that cheap labor. Where was that part in his speech last night. The part about doing what he needs to do to keep manufacturing here. But you see his buddy Imelt got a pass on that one. And what about the 575 billon dollars that was given to a large donor company in Californina. I am sure you have heard of Solyndra. The solar panel company that Obama visited last year to tout his simulus success. The one that just filed bankruptcy and was raided by the FBI. You know all the success stimulus stories from the speeches. Yep it is the republicans that are to blame for his failures.

                          People get a grip.

Regardless, of what the President attempts, the Republicans are smelling blood and they will not do anything to harm their chances in 2012, to hell with the country. I'm sadly afraid the American People have once again been dupped into believing that raw Trickle-Down Economics is their savior.

Dennis - Republicans may be smelling blood but I'm afraid if they keep this up it will be their own blood they actually see in 2012. They are quite foolish if they think they can just say no to everything that helps this country get back on its feet and have the American people reward them. Remember it's the little things that are going on that will equate to big gains in 2012....specifically the recall votes in Wisconsin, the special election Republican seat in NY that went Democratic, I believe there was another special election that went Democratic as well, the anti union repeal vote this November in Ohio. American are waking up to the radical almost tyrannical Tea Party attempted takeover of our country. Fortunately, it wasn't a complete takeover in November of 2010 and Americans can now see the consequences of their decisions. I suspect a very different result than the wing nuts on this vine are predicting in 2012......

Laurie - very little of what obama said will create more jobs in the short term, except perhaps the tax credits being supported by the right.

Infrastructure and school rebuilding are all down the road once the planning and regulatory stages are taken into account. Don't forget that winter is fast approaching in the northern states and state DOT's want to wrap up existing projects.

Keep on dreaming about a return of a democratic majority in 2012. Monthly polls shows that the populace in ever increasing numbers are saying that the US is goining in the wrong direction. the question of politics isn't even asked. That alone spells trouble for any incumbant potus or congressional.

Regardless, we have all seen what little a democrat controlled congress and executive branch did to have a lazer focus on the economy.

Skypilot - How? Simple. We don't compete. We BUY AMERICAN MADE products! Shun products outsourced by American companies. Cut off their income from the largest consumer base in the world and they will bring jobs and their manufacturing back here so fast it will take our breath away. As China and India's economy slows oil and gas prices will drop like a rock ( the PRIME reason for our economic collapse). We the consumers have the power! Let's use it! We can't count on our politician scumbags. We CAN count on ourselves if we stand together.

It seems, just like Obama, you pretty much say the same thing every post. Like him, you just use different wording. Just like the majority of the electorate's understanding of the same old tiring babble of Mr, President, yours is doing the same to most of us on this vine. Please read my post to you at 5.6. I will continue to reference it to any of your further posts commenting about that same tired old liberal talking point.

                            Have a great day.

President's speech was another stimulus plan to the tune of a half $Trillion Dollars.  To continue the same failed plan all over again is madness.  Any new revenue from closing tax loopholes should go toward paying down the national debt, not expand government.  I won't be fooled again!

He increased the tax cut on the payroll tax which supports Social Security putting it in even more trouble for the future. This was the big tax cut.

What you don't say is that he wants to pay for this with TAX INCREASES on people who make over $200,000. Get serious and listen to the whole thing. Also if the Congress (Republican House AND Democratic Senate) doesn't come up with anything to address the proposed "TAX INCREASES" for how to pay for this, nothing passes.

This guy was just campaigning and trying to buy votes again. Plain and simple.

Exactly...Obama knows exactly what he's doing. This was nothing more than a campaign speech. He knows that the GOP will not support parts of this "ACT", so it's just an opportunity for him to use it on the campaign trail. To be able to blame the Republicans for not supporting the recovery of the economy. It's the same damn BS that he keeps spewing, speech after speech. When are Americans going to wake up and realize that this President is the reason our economy is in such dire straits. I'm so tired of hearing the Democraps and the liberal media blame everything on Bush. Was Bush part of the problem, yes, but he had a Democrapic congress for 2 years as well as Obama, and they did nothing but dig us into a deeper hole. It just blows my mind how the liberal media continues to overlook all the failed policies that Obama and his radical liberal followers continue to support.

Reb - really? The reduction in the payroll tax will not impact SS in a big way moving forward. I have news for you, the federal government has dipped into that fund for years, that's just one of the problems. What do you expect the president to do alone - he should have went Harry Truman or their a$$S in congress and called them "do nothings". He has the "wacky pack" republican wannabees sniping at him every day, he has to manage the country and deal with a party that has wanted to see him fail since his election. I suspect you want him to just sit in the oval office and wait it out???

Here's some news for you reb:

As you can see, and as Elmendorf said, "Either a full or a partial extension of the tax cuts through 2012 would reduce income by much less than would a full or partial permanent extension." So the bottom line is that extending the tax cuts indefinitely would hurt the economy. The less you extend the tax cuts, the less damage you do to the economy.

Are you in the hold on to the GWB tax cut camp? But I thought you were for deficit reduction?

I would like to see all of the tax cuts done away with. That would mean more people might pay their fair share including some of the 51% that don't pay anything now in Federal taxes. I don't care about state tax, I don't care about FICA, I don't care about sales tax. What I do care about are Federal taxes. The Bush tax cuts allowd mre people to pay nothing and the big "O" just added to that number.

Heck of a way to run a country when over half of the people reap the benefits of the Fed (I am sure there are some) but don't pay for it.

Note please that I pay the ATM so all of those tax deductions get cut for me anyhow!!!

REB: I know this may be a surprise to your feeble brain, but there ARE people who don't pay taxes because they don't have jobs, are disabled, retired, etc. You can't pay Federal income tax if you don't have a paycheck coming in. How many times do we have to drum that into the heads of the GOP/TP..they keep harping about people who don't pay taxes without thinking that there is a reason WHY they don't pay taxes! These people DO pay when they purchase food, clothing, and the other basic necessities that they need.....but that's about all they can afford to pay when there's no pay check coming in!!

Look Didi I didn't insult you so don't insult me. If you believe that 51% of the US don't have jobs, are disabled or retired you need to rethink that dear.

In 2000 the number of people without Fed tax liability was 25% and in 2006 it jumped to 36% as a result of the Bush tax cuts. It is now 51% approximately after the Obama tax changes w/r to the stimulus. You can check it out. So either we have developed a significant number of retired and disabled or the tax system is out of wack which was my point.

Comprehend the cost of giving this speech to a joint session of Congress.  The limos, the drivers, the gas, the utilities, the security, the janitorial services.  The money that could have been used to create jobs if given from the oval office.  Now the president promises to go all over America at taxpayer expense to sell this Job Bill that he has not found a way to fund.  The cost of "Obama on the road again"  is millions that could be used for creating jobs.

No wonder through the entire speech Joe Biden has a confused, bewildered look on his face!  He just might know how much the travels are going to cost the taxpayers and not create one single job!

Fresh ideas like the world is flat? Like evolution is bogus? Like Barack Obama is a Muslim and is not an American citizen? Like more money for the only segment of American society that is doing well will stimulate the economy? Like destroying the quality of life for the average American will make life better for the average American? Like removing regulations that protect the public will help the public? Ignorance and untruths do not lead a person, or a nation, to enlightenment. Or is "enlightenment" a bad word since, like progressive, it implies change... something we know republicans fear since they represent the people who are doing just fine, thank you.

Let me ask a question - will companies hire more people if they don't see a need/want for a product? Would you start a business on a blank hope that enough people will like your product to support your business - even in these economic times? So, shouldn't it be that we empower the middle class to purchase and then let the businesses hire to fulfill those needs - rather than keep giving the corporations and the wealthy tax breaks, loopholes, etc. and yet we are waiting to see it trickle down to jobs for the middle class - hasn't happened yet.

The President asked something from both parties - let's see who is willing to work on this proposal and who will posture and blow hot-air just to try and ensure President Obama is only a one-term President. I mean, when does will it occur to these politicians that there are millions of us out here - in middle-class land - that are hurting and struggling - and watching who is willing to take care of business and who is not.

maga - right off hand I would say that politicians and economists have no idea on how to effectively create demand. In the past the housing market has always shown a "V" shaped recovery which helped spur job growth across the board through demand for the variety of products that went into what makes a house a home. Housing recovery has essentially flatlined since 2009.

Seems that the consumers need to deleverage themselves from debt more. This way they are once again interested in spending again. Last numbers I heard is that the US economy is 70% driven by consumers. Polls showing consumer confidence aren't good.

It has nothing to do with how people feel who have secure incomes. It has to do with massive unemployment. There is no demand problem. There is a paycheck problem. Do you think an unemployed American has no demand for housing, food, clothing, education, etc? We no longer live in a world where you can move to an empty plot of land, free of charge, build a house, hunt for food, and make your own living from scratch. We live in a world where a person must be enabled to work. If they are not, their demands go unmet. This is an issue of the allocation of purchasing power. It is not an issue of lack of demand, lack of production capacity, or an unwillingness of people to work for a living.

Mav - so obama is an idiot for wanting to cut payroll taxes? interesting!

I will agree that targeted spending is wise, unfortunately past politicians (L or R) viewed wanton spending programs as a means to garner re-election votes without thinking about long term sustainability. The populace went meerily along with it. Now we are starting to see the price we must all pay for our past greed and thinking that big govrnment is here to help us.

Being from the north and an experienced winter driver, once in a skid it is advisable to just hold onto the whel steering gently into the direction of the skid with your foot off the accelerator and away from the brake until full control is re-established. This looks like one of those time when the government needs to just steer clear and keep their feet off of a fiscal policy that hasn't worked.

No, philosophically I don't have an issue with cutting payroll taxes, but I take issue with cutting corporate taxes just for the sake of doing so. In addition, oil and corporate farm subsidies don't make sense.

Its called holding votes for an ideology that has only one goal, and it has nothing to do with federal policy, but to lay blame on one person.... Those 40 votes also hold up ANY legislation as there would be no majority...

I would have gone Harry Truman on their A$$S and called them a do nothing congress - because that's the truth. Sitting back and watching the economy tank in hopes of regaining the white house is total BS and an abdication of your oath to the Cconstitution and American people. Oh, I forgot, in Grover Norquist they trust. I believe there is a ccommandment against idolatry...

truthfull - you make the assumption that there will never be bipartisan support for a bill to pass. Doesn't say to much for the houses progressive caucus either.

More likely, those currently in congress (L or R) needs to be voted out in 2012 and replaced with those who will work for America. If the new batch are just as bad, they are gone the next election as well.

From a historical standpoint I did find the roman concept of decimation to discourage running away rather effective. One pass through of elected officials in congress, the WH and along with appointed secretary of ... should be enough to encourage bipartisanship.

Yepper mav-3674058, the democrat controlled senate sure is a do nothing crowd as well, tabling most house passed bills without discussion. Why just this past spring the house passed a FY2012 budget plan that reid and company shelved without offering any alternative budget of their own. Looks like the democrats want to see the government shut down after oct 1 because the left doesn't want to hammer out a budget with the house. Real smart those lefties, destroy America for lack of a budgetary plan.

A decent campaign speech for a used car salesman, if you like going around kicking tires and talking to used car salesmen. As always, his idea of bipartisanship is for everyone to cave in and agree with him. Same ol' failed socialism. No wonder why he is driving the country down the tubes. One thing I will say, is that he is succeeding at what he set out to do: which is transform this country into a second rate nation. He is close to driving this nation so far in debt that we may never recover. That's his idea of success.

Reagan just made us feel better about ourselves while he spent like a drunken sailor too (and actually raised taxes several times). You wouldn't know what bipartisanship because your party doesn't practise it - after the debt ceiling debate you must be joking.

TKM, that is total BS. America's demise, GWB started that train wreak and you need to get your facts straight.

From the end of Fiscal Year 2001 (ending Oct. 1, 2001) to the fourth quarter of 2007, the economy has produced $6.5 trillion (in constant 2000 dollars) over and above third quarter 2001 GDP levels of $9.87 trillion per year.[32] In the same period the federal government accumulated $3.0 trillion in gross debt (in constant 2000 dollars) or a debt load of 46.5¢ per dollar of the increased production (for comparison purposes in expressing the size of the debt; that is, new debt didn't exceed new production, but growing economies of growing populations are dependent for their vitality to certain consumption levels, so the increased production isn't necessarily immediately usable in its entirety to pay for the debt).[33][34]

Most debt was accumulated as a result of tax cuts and increased national security spending. According to Richard Kogan and Matt Fiedler, "the largest costs — $1.2 trillion over six years — resulted from the tax cuts enacted since the start of 2001. Increased spending for defense, international affairs, and homeland security – primarily for prosecuting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan – also was quite costly, amounting to almost $800 billion to date. Together, tax cuts and the spending increases for these security programs account for 84 percent of the increases in debt racked up by Congress and the President over this period."[35] Lawrence Kudlow, however, noted "The U.S. has spent roughly $750 billion for the five-year war. Sure, that’s a lot of money. But the total cost works out to 1 percent of the $63 trillion GDP over that time period. It's miniscule [sic]." He also reported that "during the five years of the Iraq war,. . .household net worth has increased by $20 trillion." [36] Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz has estimated the total cost of the Iraq War at closer to $3 trillion.[37]

Interest on the debt (including both public and intragovernmental amounts) increased from $322 billion to $454 billion annually. The share of public debt owned by foreigners increased significantly from 31% in June 2001 to 50% in June 2008, with the dollar balance owed to foreigners increasing from $1.0 trillion to $2.6 trillion. This also significantly increased the interest payments sent overseas, from approximately $50 billion in 2001 to $121 billion during 2008.[38]

President Bush also signed into law Medicare Part D, which provides additional prescription drug benefits to seniors. The program was not funded by any changes to the tax code. According to the GAO, this program alone created $8.4 trillion in unfunded obligations in present value terms, a larger fiscal challenge than Social Security.[39]

Hmm, I guess GWB should just get a pass...

I think it was a great speech. First and foremost, we need to stop looking at one another as Democrats, Republicans, and just as people that need to come together to make this what God has already ordained it to be, and that is Great Nation. It is just sickening to know that people are still putting labels on one enough when we all bleed the same way and we are all made in God's image, and from what I read that is all God. People, get it together, President Obama didn't cause the mess we have in the government, it took years to get to this point, but why are u working against him, instead of putting the brains together that God gave you to solve the issues of the world.

My prayers continue for this government, no matter who is in office, that God is consulted first and foremost about all issues of this world

                                        Mav,

I guess you believe everything you read on the Internet. Especially when the liberal media loves to spin everything towards GWB's fault.

The last deficit with the GOP in control of congress was $167 billion. The next deficit, which was the first year that the Democrats controlled spending, was $467 billion. or roughly a 300% increase in deficit spending in one year. Now, four years after the Democrats took control of federal spending, the deficit is $1.5 trillion. Almost a 1000% increase in deficit spending. I guess you want to blame Bush for this too?

At least he had the full bipartsian support from both the House and the Senate before he started those two wars. What support did Obama have when he invaded Libya or rammed Obamacare down the throats of millions of Americans and small business owners before even knowing what was in the damn bill.

I guess you seem to forget about the housing crisis that was the result of Bill Clinton's policies in the 90's, but then again, I'm sure you'll find some reason to blame Bush for that too.

Oh I see TKM. Bill Clinton created the housing crises of 2007/2008 sometime in the 90's, but Bush has nothing to do with the Great Recession that Obama inherited after Bush's 8 years of calamitous policies.

                                        What a hypocrite!

Nah, I blame Reagan for that (lol). Full bipartisan support for a lie - that was Iraq. McCain and your other war-hawks wanted him to do more with regard to Libya. Look, there is plenty of blame to go around, but spare me the talk about somehow (single handily) president Obama is ruining the country BS. Frankly, it all started with Reagan - his morning in America is now our hangover, shoot Nixon was more progressive. The right loves to portray Reagan as this knight in shining armor and every republican has tried to emulate him ever since. Now as part of the debate circuit they have to go kiss Nancy Reagan's ring and pay homage to him. Personally he appeared to be a nice guy, but if you think Obama is a smooth talker and BS artist, Reagan topped them all. We bought it because we wanted to believe the actor versus the president and he made a part of the country believe we could go back to the 1950s... You can't go back folks, sorry.

You should read, and think critically instead of making unsupported judgements about the President. It does not surprise me that most people like you are following a dangerous campaign going on in the USA that has robbed all workers of this country and is gradually taking our "voice" away. IT IS NOT OUR PRESIDENT; it is Greed from the filthy rich in this country that do not want to pay taxes. They being the minority in numbers but the majority in $$ bucks$$$ that have run the USA into the hole. Historically speaking, this country has always been in the hands of the wealthy and they represent that group and its special interests....so go figure how upset this small group of giants became when a young man like our President was ELECTED BY THE PEOPLE AND FOR THE PEOPLE. It does not sit well with them for so many reasons; so their lobbyist paid millions and millions push their agenda in the House of Reps. History of man has analyzed man of all communities: everyone has a price and can be bought. I am pro democracy dude and so is the President of the United States of America!! Really....you and your kind need to educate yourselves with facts and not uneducated and biased rhetoric coming out of Fox News or whatever sources you listen to. One question: Do you read? Read from different perspectives and get yourself well informed sources. God Bless Our America!!!

I think the President's performance has been a mixed bag. He clearly has had some accomplishments. Like it or not, he did get his health care bill through. He did take out Osama. He did get rid of DADT. On the flip side, he didn't keep his promise WR Guantanamo or in my opinion get us out of the wars nearly as fast as he said he would. He didn't keep his promise to eliminate the tax break on those making more than $250k. He is also is a pretty crappy politician-in-chief: he has been outmaneuvered by the Republicans in Congress time and time again. And although he didn't create the mess, his focus on his health care package while the economic house was burning down around him shows poor judgement (which he is now paying for in the polls and might cost him his second term).

On the flip side, the Republicans for the most part did create the giant disaster which is now America (and the world) economically speaking. It's a fact they are trying to conveniently ignore/obfuscate. Under their watch: the unpaid for Medicare bump, 2 wars, a tax cut while engaged in two wars, ... Please. I should be enthralled with having more of that because the President has made mistakes?

Overall, both sides look bad. This is why perhaps most Americans have no faith in DC anymore. I personally think the choices are between bad (Democrats) and worse (Republicans). It really would be nice to have an alternative choice.

Thank you for your balanced comments, when you consider the fact that this congress has not lifted a finger to support the president on anything (other the extending GWB tax cuts, which is fiscal suicide) he hasn't done that badly. Sure, always room for improvement and he is a reasonable man and understands that. The folks in these virtual communities love to rail against reality and common sense. He is one man and he cannot fix the economy alone nor can the government as a whole for that matter. We have been in the worst economic shape since 1929, there is no sane person that would believe you can fix it in one presidential term, it took over a decade to recover back in 1929. The republicans have made their position clear since his election - getting back the white house takes precedent over getting the country back on it's feet, party first, country last...

So mav, how do you feel about the obama tax cuts?

Interesting on how you have forgotten about that "hope and change" thingy of obama in 2008 and 2009.

reasonable people understand that recessions take time to correct, but 2 1/2 years should have shown better results. To bad for obama in not remaining focused on the economy and refusing to be a uniter and acting more like a senator than a potus.

Reasonable people have ideas that change fluidly with the facts as they are learned, which is why the idea that politicians aren't allowed to change their minds is poisonous. Ideologues ignore facts, new or old, when facts don't support their ideas. They call any update to a human's knowledge a flip-flop. Scientists are the biggest flip-floppers of all! A person who does not make decisions based on fact is harming their own progress. For your own sake... go with the facts. Do you not know them or does your agenda prevent you from admitting them in public? And if the facts are harmful to your personal prosperity, just admit that you are self-centered, move on, and stop making yourself look stupid to those who support truth even when truth does not support them. Unfortunately there will always be those in society who prefer their comfortable fantasy to harsh reality.

Democrats don't hate tax cuts. They hate being lied to about the reasons for the tax cuts. In reality-land people know that businesses add jobs to meet demand... demand created by the portion of the public that is employed. They do not add jobs just because they have more profits (note that you can only raise taxes on people who are actually making a profit), hoping their new employees will then, somewhere down the road, buy the extra production before it rots or becomes obsolete on the shelf.

The people telling you to stop taxing "job creators" are not people wanting more money to create jobs. They are people with very good incomes who want to keep more of it at the expense of people with lower incomes. Are you one of them or are you just their tool?

Yes he can. Problem is one party is only about itself and not the American people. You've seen it since Bush left office.

The Democrats controlled Congress for the first two years of this administration. What we have seen since Bush left office is a President who has zero leadership skills. Zero attempt was made to work with people that did not agree with his liberal approach to everything. Obama allienated and agitated with every speech. Only after the midtern election did the word "compromise" pop up.

Being Eurpoean, what strikes me is the hype you fomet as truth: where the Democratic House and Senate from 2006 on that couldn't wouldn't pass a bill went blameless for the economic condition of 2008, and it was all one man's fault: Bush. Now three years later with President BHO that is seen around the world as BUSH on DRUGS, four years of Democrat control of the House and Senate, and the tea party only appearing in 2010 everything is now the fault of not the one in the White House, but the party in control of only one fifth of the government.

                                                Mind boggling!

BHO is Bush on DRUGS: and a hi ball of steroids and crack at that:

No repeal of tax cuts from Bush admin

Both wars continued unabated and a third entered in Libya

                                                Regulations on steroids for business

Constant political attacks on business and tax rates for business when they are the most restrictive in the world

Temporary jobs portrayed as government created

Infrastructure spending portrayed as job market solution where it does not generate growth

Spending on infrastructure, unions, teachers all shot term and not generating long term growth

All, and I mean ALL of our present problems stem from Bush's 8 years as President...he and his minions have brought the United States to the position we are in now. Anybody who thinks that the present President, Obama, and his people can change that even in 2 years is an idiot!! It's time that the 'average, middle income, intelligent and humane American citizens' take control and get rid of this back stabbing, immature, spoil sports and spiteful 'loser' Republicans. Watching the so called 'debate' turned this elderly womans stomach. I grew up in the depression and have lived through, lets see now, 6 major wars and many small ones. I've spent my adult life mostly a Republican but at one time I saw the light and became an Independent. These 'politicians', too many of them 'career politicians' need to stop their selfish, childish behavior and do the jobs they promised to do for their people/country. Else, there goes the nation.........more like a third world country every day.

Obama is all about speeches that really are lectures. Interesting that Obama criticized Bush for deficit spending, pointing out that Bush was using a credit card from China and expecting our children to pay the price. Well guess what, that is exactly what Obama is doing. Notice the money gets spent now, and the debt is spread out, mostly when Obama is no longer in office. No different than any of his "plans". Again, no details, no specifics. But a demand, repeated over and over "pass the bill now". Again, re-election is his goal. Real clear.

Tony, can you say that you would do it any differently? If you say "yes", spoken like a true Republican. The true is you don't know. Like the rest of us you can only speculate. You can thank our last President for a majority of the problems we are facing now. During the Bush years I sent two of my children to war and stayed gainfully unemployed. Its amazing in your party how its always other people paying the price for your convictions.

Well, if they are lectures then they are lectures that are needed. Something needs to be done. PERIOD. What do you mean no details and no specifics. I watch it last night and he said it could be paid for by cutting out all the tax loopholes and having the rich pay their fair share of taxes. And I agree, everyone should pay their fair share of taxes. No one should be above it and to think otherwise is appalling. So, if the rich and big corporations pay their fair share and it covers the cost of implementing what was agreed upon by both parties then why not try it? I don't see a damn thing coming from the republicans about how to fix this economic situation? Just keep on bashing Obama and keep stalling everything that is hindering this economic recovery and see how far that gets you in an election. Until you and your party can come up with a plan on jump starting the economy and getting the job market going again then you need to stop hindering the people that are trying to better society. It's anti American and unethical to conduct yourselves in this manner.

I think he is correct in making these demands given this situation can't go on. What's wrong with demanding the people 'we' hired to do their jobs? What's wrong with demanding congress to do their jobs and do what's right for society? What's wrong with demanding elected officials to focus on America instead of party affiliation? Not a damn thing! Do the F'ing job you were elected to do or resign. Stop hindering any means to get our country going in the right direction. If you can't come up with any of your own ideas on jumpstarting this country then STFU, you're useless.
