TAMPA -- On a morning where job creation -- or the lack of it -- was the primary issue on the political spectrum, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney promised that his plan -- not President Obama's -- would be the one to get Americans back to work.
"My plan radically restructures the American economy to do what it's done in the past," Romney told supporters at the opening of his Florida headquarters here. "Lead the world, create jobs, drive rising incomes, and make sure that America remains the strong nation that can defend ourselves and provide a future of promise and prosperity for our kids."
Romney also attacked the president's plan, set to be unveiled before a joint session of congress two days after Romney presents his plan.
"I haven't seen his, but I saw version one, two, three, four and five of his jobs plan and last month it came out with zero new jobs," Romney said, referencing today's newest employment statistics, which had the U.S. unemployment rate holding steady at 9.1% and a net-zero number of jobs created.
While Romney today did not provide any new details on his jobs plan, he once again hinted at several elements it is likely to contain.
"I will make business taxes competitive with other nations, eliminate burdensome regulations and bureaucracy, and support America’s workers instead of its union bosses." Romney said in a breakfast time speech to Hispanic leaders, gathered for the annual Republican Hispanic National Assembly meeting.
In that speech to the RHNA, Romney also focused heavily on immigration policy, including hitting the president for not addressing the issue more forcefully.
"Three years ago, candidate Obama promised to address the problems of illegal immigration in America. He failed," Romney said. "The truth is, he didn’t even try."
Some analysts believe a focus on immigration could help Romney create contrasts with Texas Gov. Rick Perry, whose support for allowing in-state tuition for the children of undocumented immigrants in Texas has drawn conservative fire. Romney addressed the issue this morning.
"As governor, I vetoed legislation that would have provided in-state tuition rates to illegal immigrants," Romney said, "and I strengthened the authority our state troopers had to enforce existing immigration laws."
The nonpartisan Annenberg Factcheck.org notes -- and as First Read has pointed out -- that the state-trooper authorization to which Romney was referring was passed with just weeks left in his tenure as governor of Massachusetts, and was immediately rescinded by his successor before taking effect.
Romney's focus on the hot-button issue of immigration before a receptive, heavily Hispanic audience here underscores the importance of the state of Florida, in both the GOP primary, and the general election. Obama carried the state by just three percentage points in 2008; Bush won Florida in 2004, and since then the election of Republicans as governor and U.S. senator have given the GOP renewed hope of returning the Sunshine State to the red column in 2012.
Romney praised that new senator, Marco Rubio, himself a child of Cuban immigrants, as one of the country's "great leaders." In a few other nods to the largely conservative Cuban community here, he also praised GOP Sen. Mel Martinez, and mentioned derisively, as he has in previous stops, past praise given to President Obama by Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.
Romney will return the state at least twice more this month, for debates here in Tampa and in Orlando. But based on the heightened importance of the state to his campaign because of the entry of Perry, he will likely to be making several more stops here.
"I think you will be the state that really sets the final compass," Romney said to his supporters at the headquarters event, just blocks from the site of next year's GOP convention. "Florida is huge."

Romney's got a pretty strong record laying off people.
Now he says he has a jobs plan...whatever.
How many different foil covered wrappings are the TEAPUBLICAN CANDIDATES going to put ON THE SAME OLD "TAX CREDIT/DEREGULATION" GIFT BOX ??
I find it ludicrous that this clown ACTUALLY SAYS he is going to RADICALLY CHANGE THE AMERICAN ECONOMY....he even adds the TERRIBLE SPECTER of "THE EVIL,BAD UNIONS"....where intelligent people who actually know something about "unions in the workplace" know that they are at the lowest nadir in history, representing LESS THAN 13 PERCENT of the entire work force in America....
But it's clear that ROMNEY is REALLY SAYING is that Corporations are "BURDENED" with WAGES AND BENEFITS THAT ARE TOO HIGH and that these MUST BE REDUCED. Read what he has said....THE WAGES AND BENEFITS FOR ALL WORKERS ARE TOO HIGH BY "WORLD STANDARDS" and that CORPORATE TAXES WORLDWIDE need to be reduced.
Different colored WRAPPINGS on the SAME OLD "GIFT" doesn't change the pile of HORSE DUNG inside.
"My plan radically restructures the American economy to do what it's done in the past."
And this is why the GOP fails. They look toward the past instead of looking forward to the future.
How we grew the economy is the past will not work in this situation.
The Radical Right of the Republican party has ALREADY "radically restructured" the American economy. They have taken money from the middle class and concentrated it in the hands of a few ultra-rich. They have destroyed jobs for the middle class and exported them overseas. They have changed the tax code to reward passive investment and penalize honest labor. ENOUGH of this "radical reorganization" before the USA becomes just another Third World country.
... wow .. he used the actual word 'radically'? ... hmmmmm OK ... not the best move, I think ... but perhaps an honest statement ...
We already know how he radically restructures. We can't all work at McDonalds and Starbucks and that is all that would be left.
... don't forget Service King .. that is where all the really good jobs get created now ...
Installment 1
No one here and none of our politician want to acknowledge the real cause of our Economic Cataclysm. How can the (terminal) illness of our Economy by be healed without proper diagnosis?
“We need to OUT- INNOVATE, to OUT- EDUCATE, and to OUT- BUILD the rest of the world”. Were the words of our President at his 2011 “State of the Union address”.And here is a “Prove of Concept” for all three demands.
In my paper (URLXXX): I am quoting seven famous CEOs who are certainly “good men”, but will these “few good men” ever do anything to help their country. At this time they haven’t even hinted at a remedy, but have all been preaching that the main reason for the collapse of our economy is the FATAL problem of a HUGE Foreign Trade Deficit. We can’t manufacture “trade goods” for the World anymore, simply because wages for workers and engineers are several times lower in other countries. “Outsourcing” therefore will soon have "deindustrialized" our Nation. And there is no remedy for this if we are just looking for the well known and conventional solutions as we are doing now by relying on the century’s old, outdated theory of Adam Smith, The Wealth of Nations (1766), with its “Invisible hands”. Since his theory has worked well for centuries it became the standard in business schools in the US. Ironically, it is just this theory which now causes the “deindustrialization” of our nation. The term “Invisible hands” refers to a method by which the “business community” itself initiates and controls economic growth, driven by their own motives which are “maximizing profits” and a “strong bottom-line”. (Some say it’s a euphemism for Greed and grabbing Power) It is a rare CEO or stockholder who also has “job-creation” as part of his motives. “Wages” for jobs have always been just a necessary evil while making profits. However, in today’s Global economy wage differences between nations are so substantial that a US business, to be competitive, needs to “outsource” which then eliminates existing jobs and ends all job creation. This has actually been very profitable for business and increased the number of millionaires in the US substantially, but it also made the US “Labor Unions” powerless. Therefore, to preserve the function of our Unions the Government now needs to step in, but according to Adam Smith’ theory, the Government is not to interfere; only to make capital availability for the (very visible) “greedy hands of business”.
--------- Adam Smith’ Economy is like cans of “Instant Fish” (just add water) --------
The universality of Adams old theory has now been disproved by Prof. Joseph Stiglitz who earned a Nobel Prize for this work, but he is being ignored here in the US, (but not in other countries!) --- My proposal for a “ten year solution” for the survival of our country and of our personal welfare will be difficult to comprehend. It require some knowledge of the work of this Prof. Joseph Stiglitz, and of Prof. Peter Morici, but mainly of Prof. C.M. Christensen, on whose discovery of “Disruptive Technology” my proposal is based; “The Innovators Dilemma”. (He told me that in his graduating class of 100 students only two could recognize a new disruptive technology; it’s that difficult.) Instead of the “OLD” we need “CREATIVE” solutions; new kinds of “Skunk-Works” to create COST/PERFORMANCE Breakthroughs with <Disruptive [/Enabling] innovations>, (as discovered by Prof. Christensen.) This would allow us to put our people back to work again with acceptable wages. Can it be done? Yes, I can prove it, if only for a single line of products, mind you, I am just ONE engineer. The first product should be marketed as quickly as possible as a PROVE of CONCEP. This is doable, because I already worked on it for <10 engineering man-years> (it’s my $1.5 Mil donation) Additional help needed for starting production are some hardware and software engineers for a few months. The product will have a <two orders of magnitude> cost advantage and can be manufactures with $35 hourly wages in the U.S., but sold even on the Chinese market. This single product alone would provide us with $100 Million annual profits, but more importantly, it would bring hundreds of previously suppressed ideas from other creative engineers out into the open. This will highlight the difference between Prof. C.M. Christensen’s observations about CEOs of industry suppressing “Disruptive” ideas versus a radical mind change to quickly implementing these and getting Millions of our citizens back to work again. We need to <forcefully convince> our Business Leaders to embrace Disruptive/Enabling innovations instead of suppressing them. Read the quote on pg 5 in my paper above and also the last 5 lines on pg 12; it is my explanation of why putting a “famous CEO” (Jeffrey Immelt) in charge of the US economy is like putting a fox in charge of the hen house; ---- it’s a death-sentence for our country.
Are you asking me Mr. CEO, “How can you expect thousand of engineers to come up with more of your “hair-brained” ideas of <Disruptive/ Enabling> innovations? --- First, as I said, it is not my idea, but the discovery of Professor Christensen’s of the Harvard School of Business. In my opinion his research is the most important finding by Harvard in a century. Second, I myself have 11 patens, mostly of this <Disruptive/Enabling> kind; - and while I only have average engineering abilities, my inventions all worked and several that went into large scale production proved to be extremely reliable in the field. This reliability and my designs being always on schedule were appreciated by management. However, the much lower cost for my <Disruptive/ Enabling> designs was not. (Less profits for a Tele-com monopoly) --- About answering your “question”. Sorry, I don’t have a definite answer, only some Hope, which is surely needed, because,-------------- RIGHT NOW WE ARE LOOSING THIS ECONOMIC WAR ------------------------
Top 10 Things Texas Gov. Rick Perry Doesn't Want You To Know ...
Obama focused on Health care when he should have focused on Jobs, passed a health care bill with no public option when he had both houses, so the bill he passed is useless, not to mention he has exempted over 1000 companies from his own bill, ridiculous! Now unemployment is rising and it's too late for him to do anything, he will lose by a landslide, you three or four clowns in here supporting him wont find a soul to help you re-elect him!
All these bozos want the masses to trust them, they will change things for the better. It has never happened and will never happened. The only intelligent way to analyze a candidate is look at his past record. Only RON PAUL has an impeccable record for standing firm alongside the US Constitution. Romney already verbally said he will continue the Patriot Act which is unconstitutional, so he's one creep we should not even be paying attention to. RON PAUL is the man, President Paul 2012.
Be careful of anything Romney radically restructures. He might just do it like he did it in Mass when he was Gov. Thousands of jobs were shipped overseas and he left the State in deplorable financial shape. Besides, he would need Congressional approval for a radical reconstruction and he will never get it. He is not a Tea Party person in truth and they CONTROL the House. He will never be able toreason with them anymore than President Obama can. They only want tax breaks for their wealthy friends and big breaks for big business. I hope people are smarter that he apparently thinks we are.
That's not a plan. That's a coreographed speach. That is not a plan. And every politician uses that speach. Romney if your not going to put out a plan, then shut the hell up. We're tired of speaches. Plus your a moron. Whatever 'plan' you have, has to be both endorsed by the congress and the senate. And if they don't like your plan, then it doesn't get passed. Dumbass. A politician that doesn't even know how congress works, or if he does know, he doesn't want the american people to know.
The president, congress, and the senate HAVE TO BE IN AGREEMENT for any plan to pass, or become law. Romney is just blowing nothing but hot air up the american peoples asses. He's an idiot. Hasn't a clue about our problems. He just wants to be in history books as the next president.
As for illegal immigration...that's part and parcel what congress and the senate are supposed to deal with, not just the president.
So @!$%# you Romney.
Whenever I hear one of the Republican candidates for the Presidency utter the words, "My plan is . . .", I want to stand up and ask if we are going to be electing a dictator. Until Boehner regains control of the House and the Senate finally gets rid of its archaic filibuster rule, nothing is going to happen regardless of what the 'plan' is or how brilliant it is.
Let's see, lower taxes and deregulate businesses. Didn't we try that already? (cough 2008 crash cough cough).
And Romney's experience in 'creating jobs' appears to be buying companies, firing everyone, and keeping all the cash.
Are we _sure— we want that for the whole country?
romney and perry are "suits". period.
