Obama agenda: Scheduling conflict

The New York Times: “Any hopes that a kinder, gentler bipartisan Washington would surface once Congress returns after Labor Day were summarily dashed on Wednesday when President Obama and Speaker John A. Boehner clashed over, of all things, the date and time of the president’s much-awaited speech to the nation about his proposal to increase jobs and fix the economy.”

President Obama agreed to make his speech before Congress Sept. 8 – next Thursday – instead of Wednesday when he requested. House Speaker John Boehner suggested changing the date, which coincided with the NBC-Politico Republican presidential debate, to a day later.

NPR reports this is the first time in history that a president’s request to speak before Congress was rejected.

The New York Daily News’ cover: “Political football: Bam OKs GOP plea to shift speech date, but now he’s up against NFL opener.”

The New York Post: “Obama backs down.”

“For the first time since the American invasion of Iraq, an entire month has passed without a single United States service member dying,” the New York Times says.

This is embarrassing for the White House… “The California solar panel manufacturer that received a high-profile $535-million Energy Department loan guarantee said it was ceasing operations, laying off 1,100 workers and preparing to file for bankruptcy protection,” the L.A. Times reports. “Solyndra of Fremont, Calif., said it had been rocked by stifling global economic conditions and faced heavy competition from Chinese firms that were undercutting it on costs. It was quite a fall from late 2009, when Solyndra received a $535-million federal loan guarantee as part of the $787-billion economic stimulus package. In May 2010, company executives hosted President Obama on a factory tour and said they expected to add employees.”

The Wall Street Journal: “Solyndra was the first company to receive funds under the Department of Energy's loan-guarantee program. On a trip last year to the company's Fremont complex, President Barack Obama touted Solyndra for creating jobs. About 3,000 construction workers were employed to build a new factory. But amid competition from larger panel makers, Solyndra subsequently laid off staff and recapitalized. The loan to Solyndra came under fire earlier this year from Republicans in Congress and sparked renewed criticism Wednesday.”

“Obama backs down.”

Again. Predictably.

It's just a warm up for down the road. Once the GOP finishes shredding his jobs agenda, he'll do the real "back down."

I've seen this movie before; I know how it ends. It ends badly for the middle class, for the unemployed, and for the USA.

Obama has GE Jeff as his Job Czar. Seriously what specifically do you really think he is going to do? The speed rail contract is already gone to China. Construction? How long do you think it takes the goverment to even start a project? Guess? And guess who does most of the work?

Jake:

My expectations are low...for the reasons you mentioned, but also because the GOP isn't going to let him do anything that could help in November 2012.

That said, though, he could at least propose something useful...even it it's got ZERO chance of passing.

Oh. And he could quit surrendering his principles. Just let the Republicans kill it, then they can take the blame.

bi our economy is global. Obama know whats coming from the Europe crisis he just hoping he can string it out longer. Not even his pal Soras is recommending we throw another stimulus on the fire right now. The speed rail contract already went to China. And solar going up in flames. Anyone knows that has worked on a federal construction contract on a fast track your looking over a year. Everyone wants to see something on paper. It will be a nice speech but the proof would be on the paper if there is one.

President Obama is now going to speak on Thursday in competition to football. The president could have booked another forum if he really wanted to. This just goes to show that the president was not playing politics.

It would have been great having the president's speech, followed by the debate instead of a lame rebuttal from Republicans. GOP/TP candidates in the debate could have responded to the speech real time instead of parroting scripted talking points. I might have watched it that way.

So only the hard-core base will watch the debate, and the rest of us will entertain ourselves with highlights on the news later. And the rest of us know the president has been conciliatory once again, while Boehner has dissed the president once again with unwillingness to compromise (to get 100% of what he wanted).

For those who may not know, "dissed" means disrespect. President Obama has been shown the least amount of respect in comparison to any other president. And the American working people have been dissed as well. In the 239 days the Republicans have controlled the House, they haven't done a dang thing to fight for jobs. They don't give a sh!t about you people.

If you want to hear a b!tch session, tune into the debate, and if you want to hear about solutions, tune into the president's speech on Thursday.

Who's the Washington Outsider after this, Democratic President or Republican Congress? You need to look at this the way his base will. Some, after having experienced their own slights in this white, male, Republican world will know what went wrong here. If we weren't aware of it before, we should be now with no "principle" is at stake: those principles hide as much bigotry as "states rights" did in the sixties. Obama just moved the curtain back.

The Democrats knew for months the debate was scheduled for Wednesday night. It was foolish for them to try to upstage an already scheduled event. Obama was trying to bully his way in under the guise of national importance. Shame on him.

Please don't throw me in the briar patch, Mr. Boehner. At first I thought this was a bonehead play, then as I read about it, it seems a) Boehner comes across even more spiteful than OB did snotty for upstaging the debaters, b) Boehner gets the blame for NFL conflict and c) President gets the stage by himself after the debaters have taken their best shots. It actually works well for the President after all. Don't know if this was on purpose or by accident but they ended up getting the better of this. If Boehner had just left it alone OB would have looked like a jerk and had a divided and disinterested audience. Now he's a little humbled (again) but looks like the one on the high road, Boehner looks like a big jerk and President gets a bigger more interested audience...

LOL -- Some of these posts indicate that football is the program for you, so don't worry your pretty little heads about a jobs plan.

The GOP/TP debate was scheduled, obviously in order to have moderators and media ready to air it, but exactly how long that was in comparison to the president saying throughout August that he was preparing a jobs plan to present in September when congress returned is not known. The FACT is schedules in Washington are always busy and difficult to work around.

The difference is Boehner fails to show respect for the office of the presidency, and this is not the first time. Also, Boehner is not known for a hard work ethic, but rather the opposite -- So no sympathy for for Boohoo Boehner. The American people are sick of GOP/TP temper tantrums.

There are many things government can do to help create jobs, especially when the private sector cannot. Construction is always a part of economic recovery, so infrastructure projects are a good idea. Incentives to hire is another, helping the unemployed is another, trade agreements such as the one with Japan requiring Toyota to have plants here in the US is another, and so forth. Or would you prefer a plan of doing nothing, or worse, more of the same "trickle-down" voodoo economics that hasn't worked for the last decade?

        FedUp -

"Clueless" -? That would be YOU. And since you trolled your post from one FR thread to another, I'll do it in reply, too.

Facts are easy to find, if you even give a whiz about knowing what you write about before making a public dope of yourself.

The FACT is that the Congress is only in session for one day and a few hours of another next week. The President's decision to bring his proposals directly to the floor of the House during a joint session was dictated by a schedule set by the Republicans in the House.

The FACT is that next Monday is the Labor Day holiday, Tuesday and part of Wednesday is travel time for the Members, and the first gathering of the House isn't until very late in the day Wednesday. The House remains in session Thursday, but again goes to recess on Friday.

The FACT is that the President has been at work on his job -even during his brief vacation - while the GOP dominated House shows a sharp aversion to work. Under Boehner, the House meets for three weeks of every four, and then not for a full week. Mondays are rarely days when the House takes up work on the floor, while Fridays are recess days. Boehner apparently wants to get the most value he can from his country club membership.

And, finally, the FACT is that Boehner himself thus created the conditions under which the President had to schedule his presentation of vital business before the members of Congress assembled.

Boehner's rudeness and arraogance gave the Republicans yet ANOTHER black eye.

And you just stuck your finger in yours.

        John A

Fact: This speech is no more important than all the other speeches Obama has given on jobs. This was scheduled on Sept 7th at 8pm EST for political purposes only. Someone on Obama's campaign staff decided that it might be good to upstage the GOP debate.

Fact: Presidents need to request from congress a date and time to call a "Joint Session of Congress". It is the responsibility of congress to recommend the date best suited for the house chambers.

Fact: The President has been saying for weeks now that he will submit his jobs plan after his important vacation. He keeps saying he has a plan, and several ideas have been leaked to the press and public, so I am sure there are few if any surprises in this speech, just more of the same old tried and failed policies.

Fact: Just because congress has never turned down a "Joint Session of Congress" in the past only means there is a first time for everything. Remember Obama is President, not a King, he just don't get to demand anything.

Fact: The President could have, and should have, just sent a written plan to congress, the press, and other news outlets of what his plan is and what it contained. Thereby giving people time to read and decipher what he is proposing, not just trying to figure out what he is reading on his teleprompter.

Not true. The GOPTP ran on jobs last November. The American people have been waiting for them to do something sionce then. In vain. Jobs are the number one priority on America's mind, as evidenced by the polls. So, this speech IS more important.

sfcret: The President could have, and should have, just sent a written plan to congress, the press, and other news outlets

What's the matter with people?! Can you not listen to someone speaking and digest the information? Do you really need a written copy and/or subtitles in order to comprehend anything? Incredible!

This is the country we're talking about. Do you really claim to be that disinterested? Really?

Fielden, - Wake up and smell the coffee, what is so important about this speech, it is just another campaign type speech and because the President wants to think it is more important if he gives it to a "joint session of congress." The President gives more speeches than any President in history and still says nothing except to blame everyone and everything but his own incompetence

Yes, I and most others, want to see something that can be digested and reviewed instead of listening to the same old garbage from this do nothing President. BTW, do you think he will brag about the green jobs created in CA by Solyndra from the last stimulus bill ($535 million), oh yea, I forgot that company just fired 1100 employees and filed for bankruptcy.

time 4truth, JakeJ - So if Green technologies are not the answer what is? I read the MSN article and it also said that competitors were able to produce the panels cheaper. It sounds like they happened to be frontrunners but the johnny come lately types underpriced their technology. It happens to a lot of new technology think of the classic tale of Beta vs. VHS. The failure of this company although unfortunate doesn't prove that the technology isn't sound and the energy created isn't needed.

I know your deal is that green energy is not cost effective yet, but when will it ever be if increased research development and trial and error is not allowed. We can not all sit on our hands, continue to drill a finite resource and pout that the US refuses to compete and inovate. I'm not willing to bet on China or Saudi Arabia in lieu of the United States.

I did all the research and planning,I went to the city planning I got everything approved,EVERYONE liked the idea, I couldn't get funding. I have perfect credit personally and with my company. The government wouldn't even help, this was a perfect green project. The banks wont touch it because the government restrictions are crazy, the banks were all afraid of it even though they liked it.

What is the answer? I don't know. I heard just this week if they made the iphone here in America they would have to sell the phone for around $3000.

Some suggestions I can give to Obama to get America working again:

                  1. Give small business incentives for hiring.

                  2. Give manufacturers in America better trade advantages so we produce products and hire Americans.

                  3. Get rid of all the illegal aliens and give American workers those jobs.

                  4. Give the unions the boot and let states (like South Carolina) the right to get businesses to build in "right to work" states all across the 50 states.

                  5. Get government regulations business friendly for especially small businesses so they can compete in teh world markets.

                  6. Cut out welfare and government giveaway to worker qualified people to give them incentives to go back to work at reasonable wages.

                  7. Eliminate the healthcare bill provisions that require employers to pay for healthcare or pay a penalty. Get the medical providers and insurance companies the right to compete at market with no special favors to companies that give out large political funds. Eliminate waste in Medicare,Medicade and other government medical programs like perscription drug benefits, etc., etc.

                  8. Reduce government salaries and benefits to compete more favorably with the private sector.

                  9. Stop giving foreign aid to our enemies and divert those funds for homeland/border/immigration protections to keep illegal and terriorists out of America.

                  10. Etc., etc. I can think of many more but these are just a good start.

As California goes, so goes the nation.

California has lost 4600 businesses in 2010, and we are second to last in the nation (business friendly, not). You would think Obama or his team would have done their homework before touting this to the public.

$535 million loan and the company files bankruptcy. More productive use of taxpayer money. Instead of flushing the stimulus down the toilet why don't they just give every LEGAL American citizen a few thousand bucks. This would stimulate the economy more than anything but I forgot the stimulus is about bailing out the components that caused the problems...(big business and wall street) more money....not taxpayers. Ulthough giving money to the taxpayers that deserve it would help the economy and probably jobs but it would not help to continue our push to Socialism either so I guess it will never happen....besides that money needs to go to the likes of GE so the campaign donations keep rolling in.

The poverty level in China is out of hand. There is the rich and the really poor. No middle class(for all practical purposes). So things are great in China.

Not really. Things suck in China unless you're a successful entrepreneur in their capitalist economy.

My point wasn't that we should be like China. It was that they are kicking our butts in the "capitalism" category. Anyone who criticizes China's conversion from a Communist to a capitalist economy isn't really very well informed. It has gone smashingly well.

And a look at their working class shows where we'll be in 20 years at the current pace. Capitalists will own us, we'll work for slave wages if we can get a job, and there will be no middle class.

But hey...that's why they call it capitalism. It's about the money, not the people.
