Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro discuss whether the 2012 Republican presidential field is set, the chance of any late additions that could significantly impact the race, and how they see it all playing out in the months ahead.
Thanks to Frank "Grimey" Grimes, Springfield, USA for the question!
Keep an eye out for our next post to submit questions for future Boiler Room segments.
Video edited by NBC's Matt Loffman.

If it is..... Obama will win easily. I'm not sure I cant take four more years.
We knew this was coming: From yahoo News ...
Freedom Works is another front organization for the ultra-right that channels funding from corporations and business associations into third-party activities as well as campaign war chests. It isn't genuine "ideological purity" Freedom Works is promoting - it's an extremist agenda to take over the government and sell it off.
And the implosion of the Republican Party begins. Next thing you know, the NRA will be protesting Yosemite Sam for not using an extended clip while hunting and jogging.
Is this circus side show set yet??? lol
Good Job Frank "Grimey" Grimes. Good Question
Rick Perry is just entering the national stage. I do not believe when what he really stands for is revealed he can be elected. He does not believe in climate change, but he believe in a virgin birth. He does not believe in evolution but he believes in Adam and Eve.
If he does not believe in science, he also does not believe in education.
He believe social security is a scheme.
When the Dems finish with his beliefs, he will return to TX with his head hanging low.
I don't care for Rick Perry either as a Pres. canidate ( or any other GOP canidate) but most intelligent people have given up on Global Warming/Climate Change. Even Al Gore knows it's B.S.
If people's religious beliefs were the yardstick by which they were measured for fitness for office, Obama's 20 year membership in a church based on hateful beliefs would have disqualified HIM.
Perhaps you believe that the government invented AIDS to decimate the African American community?
This election will be about the economy. Perry's record beats Obama's every day of the week.
The wife should start packing. Moving is a hassle.
Nice try NJNB-- You can pray for Rickie, but it ain't gonna happen, the guy is a goofball. No wonder you like him.
Good to see you NJ, Hope all is well. Many have asked about you.
I'm sure Feisty will have a warm welcome for you this morning.........
Hi No Joe - Good to see you back posting. Hopefully the flooding hasn't affected you or yours.
On a lighter note judging from your post I knew nothing couldn't dampen your spirit! :}
Some of you better get yourself into the rest of the country. I agree with No Joe that Perry's religious beliefs and pandering to the religious right to win the GOP nomination will have no bearing on the national election as it will be all about the economy. Plus, in the 8 states that will decide the election, if you actually look at this country, being religious and believing in God is generally considered a positive trait. You on the blog that hate anyone that is Christian but dont call the terrorists islamic terrorists people wouldnt vote GOP no matter who is running so your views arent going to decide the election. Your the same people who dismissed Obama's membership in Jeremiah Wright's church and all the hateful things that are said but apply the hypocritical standard to Perry? Like you guys are credible on this issue. Its the economy and Obama is running 10 points behind Perry/Romney in the key electoral states.
Why can't we live God out of this?
Actually, it's Al Gore and other flat earthers who ignore science
http://opinion.financialpost.com/2011/08/26/lawrence-solomon-science-now-settled/
So, it's that big yellow gas giant that controls the earth's temperature.
You'd think this would be greeted as good news- the fears of human activity causing climate change are unfounded, we can use fossil fuels, (which are, after all, nothing more than dirt- originating, as they do, from decomposed organic matter), so we can drop the expensive, prone to failure, inefficient "green" technologies, and concentratemon what works.
You'd be wrong. Some people have adopted this as a religion, while far more people have vested financial interests in continue using what is, at its base, a fraud perpetrated on a scientifically ignorant public.
On the other hand, Gore is now having public temper tantrums because his beautifully constructed scam is going belly up. He will NOT be getting royalties from carbon credit transfers- that sure bet will not pay off. I'm sure he'll take comfort from the fact that the house he bought in an area he claimed would be under water by now is safe- and his losses will mitigate the financial settlement from the divorce.
Cold comfort, I'm sure, but it's an I'll wind that does not blow some good.
I'm surprised that more of the real Taxed Enough Already people haven't taken up Ron Paul's cause. He appears to be the real deal when it comes to cutting spending, cutting taxes, and dismantling government.
If what you are really after is a fundamentalist christian extremist, then by all means, Rick Perry is for you.
What is a fundamental christian extremist dirp? Can you give me your definition? Would it be similar to a church that preaches intolerance to certain segments of our society or what is your definition?
Kirk: yes, that pretty much states it. The belief that your version of the Christian faith is the only true acceptable version and that all others are not acceptable and that anyone who does not believe exactly as you do is evil, that is the extremism I'm talking about.
Rick Perry may not be like that, he may just be pandoring to the christian conservatives for votes. Which is worse, in your opinion, an extremist or one who panders to extremists ?
Doesn't the Big O pander to (or buy) extremists (and every other group he thinks he can get a vote from)?
Why is a conservative's religion a concern but not the Big O's? He sat in a radical's church for twenty years listening to such enlightening sermon's as "God Damn America" and "Chickens come Home to roost". He has like minded people in his party saying Americans want to hang black people. Shameful.
The Big O is a radical. He proved it the first half of his Presidency and now seeks to move right to get re-elected. Well.....it's not working. People reject him more and more everyday. I like how the left now says "polls don't matter" when the Big O is sinking faster than the Titanic.
this election will be about the economy. perry's record beats obama's every day of the week.
this posting is a joke. apparently you do not follow politics, and you believe what fox news(?) tells you. the jobs perry brags about creating are low paying jobs. and state jobs. his views on science and medicare will assure he is not elected.
Ghettoforever- I doubt even Nut job believes what she posts, but if they pay her to write drivel than drivel is what they get.
Perry's record is dubious at best. Texas unemployment has increased from 8.1% to 8.4% in the last couple months. Those jobs he created, many were those evil Government jobs he hates so much; most of the rest were low wage jobs. Perry took stimulus money and plugged a budget shortfall and then tried to tell people he wanted nothing to do with stimulus money and claims it did not work. He's a fake. Perry is just another flag-waving Texan whose beliefs align with the far right-wing conservatives who reinvented the old John Birch Society and renamed it the Tea Party--sounds more patriotic but is anything but.
Wait you guys are nit picking Texas job growth numbers which is a legitimate exercise but if you are using that as a way to distinguish him from Obama, have you guys paid any attention to the national scene? What is Obama's record on job growth and the economy? Dont you think thats a loser for Obama all day long? Look at the states that are proxies for the Obama's policies of high tax, pro union, high government regulation of California, Illinois and NY. How are those states doing in comparison to Texas?
Kirk~ If Perry increased Texas jobs by bringing in companies from other states with promises of cheap labor, no income tax, and who knows what other compensations, and increasing government jobs, how's that going to help the USA? Where's he going to bring jobs in from? It's not like these were newly created jobs - except for the government ones. And, by the way, Texas had a bigger deficit than California in this year's budget. Perry used Federal funds and decimated funding for education and social programs to "balance" his budget.
Judy, my point wasnt to defend Perry and his record in Texas but more if you are going to use that type of scrutiny, logic and rationale review (which I think Perry's record should be) of the Texas economy, then these same people need to do it to Obama either with the same harshness or objectivity. Its hypocritical and makes the poster have no credibility. For example, after increasing taxes in Illinois for corporations to 9%, all the companies decided to get up and leave but the democratic governor gave out $200 million in tax breaks to keep them. Well guess who gets the brunt, small businesses. He also created an online sales tax, so now we are losing online retailers and affiliations with local retailers like crazy. Its estimated that 25,000 jobs were lost just due to the online sales tax. High tax, pro union and high regulatory environment does shift jobs to other states and overseas. We are a state drowning in red ink adopting the same fiscal policies as the national government. Not a good guinea pig example for Obama.
Texas: 732,800 new private-sector jobs in the past ten years. Second place goes to Arizona . . . with 90,200.
Job growth has been across all sectors. Not just low paying support type jobs which usually follow behind higher paying jobs. Here's an example:
http://recenter.tamu.edu/news/pdf/NewsRel20-0811.pdf
Of course Illinois, a very blue state, was number one in July......wait.......that was for # of jobs lost. I don't hear anyone accusing their governor of creating low wage jobs........or any jobs.
Don't believe in Global Warming? Check out the lead story on MSNBC front page.
Cali Tom
Sorry I didn't know the fine scientist at MSNBC are backing the Global Warming loons. C'mon Tom the "scientist" that the U.N. and Al Gore used for their data have already admitted to lying. They admitted they changed their data to back Global Warming or is it climate change this week.
Do you know where Global Warming came from? It was started by a PRODUCER at the weather channel, she wasn't even a meteorologist. Almost all meteorologosits and climatologist can't find any evidence that it is any warmer now than it was 10,000 years ago. Of course it warmed after the ICE AGE, of course the ice cap has melted it once covered Kansas, this has happened MANY TIMES. It is a weather cycle. Be glad we are in the warming cycle because that is when plants and animals thrive. In the 80's Pres. Carter was scaring people with the new Ice age. When that happens again most of us will die.
I seem to remeber NASA has said after a decade long study that they found the earth was not warming.
Just recently. So what does crazy Al do?Double down and claim people who don't follow his particular religion are "racists".
Gotta love the loons.
We lost 4600 businesses last year here in California and now rank 50th. We suck!
Not yet, Sarah Palin is going to jump in after Labor day.
Great question, Frank "Grimey" Grimes.
Personally, I do not think Sarah Palin has any intention of running for President. Yesterday, the local news reported that she cancelled her appearance in Iowa Sep 3. The idea that candidates could wait until late summer and early fall to enter is ludicrous. The only way a candidate could do that would be if it were a "cream of the crop" candidate such as Jeb Bush--anyone else has lost the spring and summer of campaigning in the early states.
Palin is a known entity and does not need an intro like new comers Perry, Huntsman, Santorum et. al.
Yes, Palin is a known entity and that's exactly why she won't run but she cannot at this late date enter the race; too much ground to be covered. Her unfavorables far surpass her favorables; she has proven herself to lack the "stick to the job" factor. Palin only seeks attention to keep her name in lights and bring in cash, and promote herself for paid speaking engagements. There's nothing wrong with that because her political future is no longer viable and she knows it.
Correct Jody. Palin is playing the media for fools and they are willing to oblige. Concerning her movements/plans and how the news media cover her I have more respect for TMZ and their incessant coverage of celebrities.
Frank Grimes this is as good as the GOP field gets. Seems as if you always get your question answered. Being that you appear to be a media darling at boiler room and floated some ideas about running for something or other I would like to ask you a question.
Who are you leaning toward?
Well, no, t4t, intelligent people have NOT given up on Climate Change (AKA Global Warming AKA GLobal Weirding, for those in the know.) It is an observed fact that temperatures are rising, and that much of this temperature increase is due to human causes. You'd be hard-pressed to find a reputable climatologist who believes otherwise.
What's really scary is that even a small increase in the temperatures of the ocean and the atmosphere can have profound impacts on not just on daily weather, but also on weather patterns, that is, on climate. What is more, the Navier-Stokes equations describing atmospheric dynamics (and hence weather and climate) are very sensitive to initial conditions. This means that even a small change in baseline temperatures can have an essentially unpredictable impact on climate itself. So for example, perhaps the Mediterranean climate pattern of California (wet winters, dry summers) could switch to dryer winters and wet summers when the average temperature increases past a critical tipping point.
FYI I am a PhD mathematician who knows something about differential equations and strange attractors
(when the equations are used to describe atmospheric dynamics, the strange attractors are the climate patterns). A close friend is a planetary scientist at NASA. And no, neither of us make any money off of the theory of climate change.
Under these circumstances, we really need a president who believes in global warming.
Annika
Try John Coleman( meteorologist) he is the creator of the weather channel. Check the petition of meteorologist from all over the world who are considering suing Al Gore for lying and stealing money from people that he scares in to contributing their hard earned money. This weather cycle we are in has happened many many times.
As far as NASA is concearned they have admitted too that some of their data was changed because of pressure from the White House.
Congrats on your PhD. something you can be very proud of (I'm very sincere in this ). Smarter people than you (not a slam I assure you ) have been duped before. Ask the many "friends" of Bernie Madoff.
Annika I'm sure you and I wont agree and that's ok. I know I'm right and you know you are right.Oh well! I hope you have a wonderful day.
FYI I'm a black, lib, well educated, man from the South Side of Chicago I wont vote for Mr. Obama again.
t4t, your comments demonstrate a poor grasp of scientific method, the sort of data it produces, and the analytic methods used to formulate scientific theory. It isn't a matter of intelligence or general education, but specific background. I'm sorry Mr. Gore has politicized this for so many people, good intentions notwithstanding. It is no longer a scientific argument; a meteorologist, who studies weather, issuing declarations about climate is just another guy offering his personal opinion. Give it a rest.
I sincerely hope someone new enters the GOP field. The current crop is not acceptable...and I am a Republican. Is there any way we could convince Bob Gates to run?? Nah, probably not; he's too smart.
Both political parties and the president needs to start acting like leaders as this country is in a real mess and will not get better until some true leadership is displayed ahead of their personal agendas.
It shouldn't take much to beat this "partisan sniper" of a President. Americans do NOT like people who say one thing and do another. Obama spoke of "transparency" from day 1. He turned around and had Obamacare crafted behind closed doors with NOT 1 Repub. in the room, and it went against what 70% of the American people wanted. He criticized Bush for the wars and THEN neglected to ask Congress for the right to drop bombs on Libya . He talks about the immigration problems ( uses it to garner votes from Latinos) and will not even pick up the phone when the Govenor of Az. calls to discuss the horrendous "illegal alien" problems they have there. I would be here all day if I mentioned all the examples of why Obama needs to GO ! Obama is a LIBERAL HACK with no real integrity when it comes to the problem solving dilemmas that a President faces. GOP 2012 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Congratulations, Grimey.
I don't have sound on my computer at work, so I have no idea what the journalists' answer was, but I'm pretty sure it must be: if you are a moderate Republican and can't bring yourself to vote for a Democrat. Stay home on election day. Please. Seriously. Stay home. Your Party is in the hands of the far right extremists this year. (or write in Frank (Grimey) Grimes!)
Amy----Mark & Domenico always give great answers and they called Grimey one of their "favorite" questioners! They did call for a Grimey for President write-in campaign! Seriously, they basically said the field is set and it is too late for Sarah Palin (but I'm not counting her out, not that you asked).
THE "CAVEMEN" on the Geico commercials might be somewhat better. The Repukelans and Teamilitants all belong in a ZOO. They need to change their STONE AGE Brains and move forward on the Evolutionary Map.
What I see is a light switch in OFF position permanantly. They should not be running for any Government position. They are the NO and NOTHING DONE parties. Hows that for CAVEMAN BRAINS!!!!
We will never get ahead with this CLAN!!!
Well Alaine thanks for all your upper echelon of intelligence, these items of great pontification should solve all our problems facing us today.
Hillary 2012
Alain D., who has "the light switch off" ?? With 9.2% unemployment, 2-3 wars, open borders, s&p downgrade, $14-15 trillion debt and a President who takes more vacations than Paris Hilton and has "illegal" relatives residing in the U.S. on the taxpayer dime................How is that working for you ?!
Q: Is the GOP field set?
A: Maybe
Q: Will ANY new entrant change the presumptive GOP nominee for 2012?
A: No, this is settled, and astute political readers already see a clear front runner, convention balloons, a rousing nomination speech, and a clear contrast with Obama -- the clearest possible.
The political strategists at the White House have got to be praying the GOP field is set. All of the current candidates have got significant baggage and not a one of them would I trust to mow my lawn let alone vote for President. I see people posting in here that Rick Perry is the new frontrunner. Perry is not known for his debating skills and would be torn apart by the intellectual Obama. Besides that I do not believe most people are aware of Perry's escapades with people of the same gender yet. Google Rick Perry & Gay and see what you get. LOL
Rick in Vegas: "Perry is not known for his debating skills and would be torn apart by the intellectual Obama."
" The intellectual Obama", as you call him, has gotten us to ramp up a war in Afghan., start another one in Libya, 9.2% unemployment, s&p downgrade, open borders, another $4trillion in debt, and he's still blaming Bush !! How is that working for you? I'll take Perry any day over Obama. BTW, you need to stop spreading unfounded LIES about candidates you don't like. You sound desperate.
After Sarah joins the race the field will be set.
We can only hope !!!!
Not!
