Subscribe to RSSTULSA, Okla. -- Sen. Jim Inhofe knew Gov. Rick Perry was running for president before Rick Perry did.
"I said to him, 'Rick, I know you'll deny it now, and you're supposed to, but you're going to end up running," Inhofe recalls from a conversation with 14 months ago. "And when you are, just call me up and give me a little advance notice and I will do whatever you think I can do to be of some help to you.'"
Inhofe, who yesterday became the first United States senator to formally endorse a candidate the 2012 GOP primary, told NBC News during an interview in his Tulsa office that Perry's gubernatorial experience, personal profile, and good looks made him a shoo-in to run even when the Texas governor seemed certain to turn down supporters begging him to jump in.
Naming his criteria for a Republican nominee -- electability and consistent conservative values -- Inhofe said the choice among the contenders was easy. "He was the one," Inhofe said.
The Oklahoma Republican, who is one of the leading skeptics of human beings contributing to climate change, is also supporting Perry because of the governor's pledge to dismantle EPA regulations that both believe stifle job creation.
"He was willing to take on the sacred cows," Inhofe said, "and that is the overregulation" by the Environmental Protection Agency. "He wasn't afraid of it. Everyone else was afraid of it."
He added that the nation is turning away from the belief that climate change is man-made and must be regulated. "I think there's been a wakeup call to the American people," he said. "I think they realize that a lot of the science has been drummed up by people who have a financial dog in the fight."
That's a belief both men share. Inhofe said in the interview that "the vast majority" of scientists dependent on government grants "go along with the whole idea" of global warming to keep money flowing to their research projects. Perry, at a campaign stop in New Hampshire earlier this month, claimed there are "a substantial number of scientists who have manipulated data so that they will have dollars rolling into their projects."
Perry's skepticism about global warming would lead him to gut federal regulations geared towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which Inhofe says should be a pleasing proposition to deficit hawks.
"He'll attack [the debt] from the regulatory end as much as he will from the spending end," Inhofe said. "I haven't heard anybody else talking about that because they're afraid of the issue."
Perry would also support oil and natural-gas production in areas of the United States that are currently closed to drillers, Inhofe said.
"The fact that 83 percent of our public land is off limits is ludicrous," Inhofe said. "We can't sit around and talk about how we want to do something about our dependency on the Middle East and not go ahead and get our own stuff. That's what he wants to do."
Inhofe, who endorsed early-conservative-darling-turned-flameout Fred Thompson during the last presidential cycle, sees one key difference between Thompson and Perry.
"Fred's lazy," Inhofe said. "And this guy's not lazy; he works all the time."

Yes- it was Inhofe, and the guy with him was Perry. Inhofe had to hit the runway at a really steep aproach angle, and really slam on the old brakes and hit the spoilers, and I mean RIGHT NOW! When they stopped, Inhofe said "damn, Rick- that's the shortest runway I've ever had to land on". To which Perry replied, looking first out the left window, then the right window: "...yeah, but just look how WIDE that sucker is!"

Hearing liberals using the words like "dumb, stupid, moron, uneducated, idiot, cowboy" is music to our ears. They confirm the candidate they would least want to run against. We heard the same words used to describe two double-term presidents, Reagan and Bush. What scares the libs most is after four years of Obama, just about any right-wing person can win easily in light of his 38% approval rating, 9% unemployment and $4 trillion debt in three years.

With fine Republican Senators like Mr. Inhofe, landing at construction sites may be the only place they can land, with the current FAA funding bill set to expire (for the 4th time) yet again because Republicans keep trying to add policy issues to funding bills. If the Republicans want to bring up policy laws, bring them up and vote on them by themselves. I say the same to Democrats.
Most states have a seperation of policy from spending bills for just this reason.

One in Four Democrats Want to Dump Obama
A new poll by CNN and ORC International finds that 27 percent of Democrats would like to see their party nominate a candidate

Despite the devastation caused by Hurricane Irene this weekend, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) today stood by his call that no more money be allocated for disaster relief unless it is offset by spending cuts elsewhere.
On Saturday, House Appropriations Committee Chairman Harold Rogers (R-Ky.) called on the Senate to quickly pass the House GOP’s version of the annual Homeland Security spending measure, which includes $1 billion in additional money for the disaster fund this year and $2.65 billion for fiscal 2012.
The Obama administration “has let the fund reach critically low levels, putting continued recovery at risk, without a plan for the future or a clear method for dealing with new disasters,” Rogers said.

Obama said today in his speech that we need more jobs and we need them faster. This should put to rest any doubt this is the smartest president in the history of the US.
One in four Democrats wants to dump Obama in the CNN poll. In the Gallup Poll which shows Obama with a 38% job approval ratings, 34% of those approving of Obama and saying they would vote for his re-election still say they are disappoint in his job performance. In this midst of this, Democrats are saying all Obama has to do is take his new big spending stimulus to the people and he is home free. What world are you people living in. Almost 2/3 Americans don't think he is doing a good job but they will approve of more big spending similar to what 80% of American didn't think worked the first time. Must be nice living in that make believe world. Are you people still convincing yourself that 75% of Americans are progressive even though Gallup tells you it is under 25%

I was just looking at some indexes myself. From our GDP to Germany's and elsewhere, we are in a recession. Just no two ways about that. Funny thing is I also recall Obama and Biden telling us the last two summers were "Recovery Summers."

Anyone who willfully rejects hard science is, by definition, an idiot. Perry and Inhofe are examples of such. Looking at presidential candidates, not all Republicans are idiots, but almost all idiots are Republicans. Mitt Romney, Jon Huntsman, and Ron Paul are not idiots and although I don't believe any of them can change things for the better, it's doubtful that they'll be worse than Obama. On the other hand, Bachmann, Palin, and the other right-wing extremists are likely to screw up the country so bad it's permanent and irreversible.
I've typed this so many times I could probably do it in my sleep but once again, for the benefit of the idiots (in this case Spanky) who quote "the polls" as showing Obama behind or neck and neck with ANYBODY on the GOP/TP side, go to realclearpolitics.com and read the compilation of ALL the polls and you will see you are dead wrong. First off...Perry flew C-130's. These are not the planes the air force sticks there cream of the crop on. These are old, rugged airplanes that take a lot of abuse and are extremely easy to fly and recover from mistakes. They do not require the skill a fighter jet or larger cargo jet (C-5 or globe master) would require.
In the era when Perry was in the air force many young men were placed in the cockpits of planes who could simply pass the physical exams and some rudimentary flight training.
Flying a plane is not that difficult - I myself have done it. Why do you think this is some miraculous reason to endorse someone? After all several terrorists 'flew' planes on 09/11/01 and had pilots licences...does that make them eligible for the Republican / Tea Party nomination too?
But Feisty - the democrats endorsed a complete unknown. While I do understand your political position and you hate all things republican, Obama has his records sealed. He's our president for goodness sakes. The American people deserve to know who this man is. His secrecy does not place him in a favorable light. Unfortunately, he won't get away with it this time. Debates are coming and I am positive he won't be getting a free pass this time. Not at a 38% approval rating. It's not about need. It's about change, something we have not gotten under Obama. Why do you supposed his approval is so low? The independents wanted change, not four more years of Bush. Large number of people who voted for him are saying not two times. Carter gave us Reagan. Obama will give us Perry.
You can only change when the opposition will work WITH you on some level. The Republicans have been obstructionist to everything that Obama has attempted to do for this country. Considering the circumstances of this political theater, we are right where congress has led us.
Would Perry or any other Republican candidate do a better job of leading this country in the 'right' direction? I haven't seen one yet.
