Subscribe to RSSSARASOTA, Fla. -- An earthquake, a hurricane within just days of each other hit the East Coast and Washington, D.C. What accounts for this? According to Rep. Michele Bachmann -- it's God's reaction to politics.
“I don’t know how much God has to do to get the attention of the politicians," Bachmann said. "We’ve had an earthquake, we’ve had a hurricane. He said, 'Are you going to start listening to me here. Listen to the American people.'"
That was met with scattered laughs inside a crowded auditorium here Sunday. Bachmann added that God is demanding that politicians “listen to the American people.”
During a press conference following the event, NBC News asked Bachmann to clarify.
"Our hearts and prayers and thoughts go out to the families of the victims," Bachmann said, adding that the national debt poses a threat to relief efforts.
She contended she was joking about God's intention, but then doubled down.
“What I was saying in humorous vein is that there are things that are happening which politicians have to pay attention to," she told NBC. "It isn’t every day that we have an earthquake in the United States.
"I think that what we’re seeing is that in this country, we have to have a margin -- financially. And when we are so out over the cliff, financially, we don’t have the margin that we need anymore.”
According to the latest reports, as many as 25 people there is a growing number of those who died in Hurricane Irene; 15 people had been counted dead at the time of Bachmann's appearance in Sarasota. FEMA administrator Craig Fugate said he had seen "open source" that there were 21 dead.
The event was the second of two campaign stops Sunday. It followed a morning trip to the sprawling Idelwild Baptist Church in Lutz, outside Tampa. Before the Sarasota event began, a line of several hundred supporters awaiting entry to the building -- a local Shriners Temple -- were greeted by about 40 college-age gay-rights protestors.
Inside, more than 130 people packed the stage directly behind Bachmann's podium. The crowd on the main floor spilled out into the building's entrance area. Sarasota GOP Chairman Joe Gruters tells NBC the event drew more than a 1,000 people.

Bachmann is a zealot who needs to be thrown out of the office. It is clear that she is completely clueless when it comes to...well, everything.
So natural disasters are God's way to tell politicians they need to listen to the people? It seems to me the last time a politician really listened to the people, God's son was crucified.

Uhmmm. I see. So, when a two years old is driven over by his own Dad in the car in their own drive-way, that is not God's doing. But, when we have a hurricane and other severe weather phenomena - mostly caused by global warming and irresponsible rich people's greed to fail to update their factories, mines and production facilities to be on par with environmental regulations - then comes Ms. Bachman with her twisted idea of these storms being sent upon us by GOD. I thought lawyers are intelligent people. Or, maybe the problem is, that she is intelligent enough to see the contradiction here, but totally underestimates other people's cognitive functioning.

Ugh, will she quit telling people she's from Minnesota? We don't want the whole state to be blamed for the ignorance of our sixth district. Michele, honey, go back to telling people you're from Iowa. It isn't just for when you're there. Oh, and when another devastating tornado or snowstorm wrecks havoc some where in our state, keep your fool damn mouth shut if someone makes a joke about God trying to take care of our state. Embarrassing.
It is sad to see the continuing denying of the lord, by politicians. im sure she was serious about things happening because this nation is letting politics get in the way of supporting the lord, after all all it took was a few scattered laughs to change her stance. Shame on her, to abandon god like that, shows hopw fast she would abondon any one of her constituants. But the more we allow the lord to be pushed aside by the minority, i'm sure the worse things will get, up to the fall of this nation, wake up america and stand up for your god!!!!!
Those who advocate religion in politics and religion in government have made complete assinine fools of themselves, God didn't have to lift a finger to accomplish that. I don't think God needs or wants his business to be represented by these idiots. If you respect God you will keep his business out of Politics and Government.

But she is right and she is helping. Every since a certain ideologue has come to power we have seen a constant rise in natural disasters. God is punishing us for the abandonment of the elderly, children, the sick and the poor. The God of Israel is sick and tired of our crap. LOL We have polluted that which was not polluted. I remember Omni Magazine in the 80s predicting that Americans in the 21st cent. would be stupid, ignorant and crude. I never dreamed they would be so accurate. What a nightmare! A whole society of unprecedented privilege, comfort and opportunity, and all we do is celebrate hatred and breed idiotic, mouthy know-it-alls for national leadership. What is all this complaining? To hear the GOP tell it, we're all standing in a soup line because of Comrade Barack. To hear the liberals, sounds like they think anyone in private business is a traitor, and as usual they promote the idea that government has all the answers.
They're both out of all contact with reality! Seeing the arrogance and utter lunacy in these new politicians, and I'm embarrassed to say most of them are my own generation, makes me think we should have given old King George and his Parliament another chance. I wouldn't mind being able to emigrate to New Zealand without a passport just now.

When I saw that Perry told the people in Texas they should pray for rain and then I see what Bachman said. I can only conclude that god hates texas.
