Subscribe to RSSSARASOTA, Fla. -- An earthquake, a hurricane within just days of each other hit the East Coast and Washington, D.C. What accounts for this? According to Rep. Michele Bachmann -- it's God's reaction to politics.
“I don’t know how much God has to do to get the attention of the politicians," Bachmann said. "We’ve had an earthquake, we’ve had a hurricane. He said, 'Are you going to start listening to me here. Listen to the American people.'"
That was met with scattered laughs inside a crowded auditorium here Sunday. Bachmann added that God is demanding that politicians “listen to the American people.”
During a press conference following the event, NBC News asked Bachmann to clarify.
"Our hearts and prayers and thoughts go out to the families of the victims," Bachmann said, adding that the national debt poses a threat to relief efforts.
She contended she was joking about God's intention, but then doubled down.
“What I was saying in humorous vein is that there are things that are happening which politicians have to pay attention to," she told NBC. "It isn’t every day that we have an earthquake in the United States.
"I think that what we’re seeing is that in this country, we have to have a margin -- financially. And when we are so out over the cliff, financially, we don’t have the margin that we need anymore.”
According to the latest reports, as many as 25 people there is a growing number of those who died in Hurricane Irene; 15 people had been counted dead at the time of Bachmann's appearance in Sarasota. FEMA administrator Craig Fugate said he had seen "open source" that there were 21 dead.
The event was the second of two campaign stops Sunday. It followed a morning trip to the sprawling Idelwild Baptist Church in Lutz, outside Tampa. Before the Sarasota event began, a line of several hundred supporters awaiting entry to the building -- a local Shriners Temple -- were greeted by about 40 college-age gay-rights protestors.
Inside, more than 130 people packed the stage directly behind Bachmann's podium. The crowd on the main floor spilled out into the building's entrance area. Sarasota GOP Chairman Joe Gruters tells NBC the event drew more than a 1,000 people.

This would all be absolutely hilarious if there weren’t actually people out there in La-La-Land who think this woman is qualified to be President of the United States! All jokes and silliness aside, I can't help but feel compassion for Minnesotans for the humiliation. Yes, I know this was self-inflicted, they elected her. But the will of a mere plurality can badly tarnish the good image of a whole state of wonderful, decent, sensible people. And just when they were beginning to live down that 'not-so-excellent Jessie Ventura adventure.' I feel their pain!
After reading and listening to Michele's rants and rails against the EPA last weekend -- and then this story today about her knowing God's intentions -- the thought occurs to me that she herself, evidenced by these sort of "on the fringe of sanity" daily offerings might be a good argument for the Minnesota Dept. of Environmental Quality to take another look at the state's drinking water. I'm thinking maybe brain-eating parasites? :O

The distressing part about Bachmann's ignorant statements is that many people that will agree with her.
No. 1 - What scares me is, when was the last time these Gov's and Congress people took American History ? Bachmann's should know we have separation of Church and State. Besides... "Collections on Sundays at church dosen't count as part of the budget problem solution.
No.2 - Gov. Palin thinks that when Paul Revere rode through the county side warning "The British Are Coming !!!, he never added... "To Take Your Arms .... away !!!" and
No. 3 - Rick Perry thinks he can solve the National Debt cause we have, "57 States" anyway. Those other 7 new states can pick-up the slack.

Children died. Getting hit by falling trees. Fathers and mothers have died.

Why should children lose their lives? A baby died. None of these children did anything wrong. They were just hiding out in their homes or in a car.

So let's see if I have this right---if she is serious, then she believes God sent last week's natural disasters as a wake up call to balance our budget. If she was joking, then she thinks it is appropriate to joke about a natural disaster that cost lives and resources because that is her idea of funny? Either way it is scary that this woman could be spoken of as a serious contender for the presidency.
I seriously get a headache every time she speaks. It is most likely due to the fact that each time she speaks I do a *facepalm* and slouch down in my chair a little bit more. And she is the front runner in Iowa!?

Yes, Rick in Savannah is absolutely correct. Bachmann is clearly the most sensible choice for the GOP to oppose Mr. Obama in the 2012 election. I hope that all Republicans will support her in the primaries. She has it all: intellect; stability; wisdom; compassion; her own facts and statistics you can't find anywhere else; a direct line to God; starts every sentence with "Barack Obama", um, well .... you know what I mean.

There can be this California 'lawyer', see- with a cute name like 'Sparkie' or 'Spammy" or something. Anyway, he's telling Moynihan or someone that because Obama has had some setbacks or problems, everybody is going to go out and vote for someone like Bachmann or Perry in droves.
