Almost forget - about the cancellation of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. ;o(

I saw this on Andrea Mitchell's show yesterday:

Stevie Wonder made a surprise appearance, taking the stage to describe how he was able to “see” the memorial through touch, thanks to Harry Johnson, president and CEO of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Foundation, who made it possible for him to ride a cherry picker to experience the King statue by hand. Wonder announced that he would donate $10,000 per year so that as many other blind people as possible could do the same,

Those who know me - are familiar that I have a special place in my heart for the visually impaired...

Now speaking of Stevie - let's get the party started over at the Dew Drop Inn...

Apparently there are still some harsh feelings in Wisconsin:

Headline: Locks superglued prior to protests of Governor Walker at local school

MILWAUKEE - Protesters crowded the street outside Messmer Preparatory School in Milwaukee's Riverwest neighborhood as Governor Walker visited the school Friday to read to children.

The protests came just hours after someone vandalized the school ahead of the Governor's visit.

"Some of these folks super glued our front doors at the prep school," said Br. Bob Smith, OFM, the president of Messmer Catholic Schools, about the school on the corner of North Fratney and East Burleigh Streets.

According to Br. Smith, one protester said " 'Get ready for a riot,' because they were going to disrupt the visit.

Sounds like Governor Walkers recall will be happening. The tea party is getting very unpopular in Wisconsin for some strange reason.

You know Joanna, you can only crap on people so much before they get angry. The republican party has been dishing out plenty of crap since the last election.

It is called Karma and Walker is getting his share and with his record he has plenty of Karma left to get.

Last Friday we went to some super fu-fu new resturant in Del Mar. Great view, decent food, but small portions and very expensive.

I know only the tea party is allowed to act angry and take their country back to something like 1778 when the constitution didn't have a lot of amendments and the blacks were still slaves. Yeah, the good old days.

The progressives are angry and think we should stay in this century the one we live in and not the imaginary one of the smaller government crowd where the rich don't pollute and they still have clean food to eat.

Like I said earlier if you are going to crap on people, at some point they are going to get angry. That is like blaming the rebels, why did they have to get so mad, who just threw Qaddafi out. Karma, you get what you deserve.

Governor Walker worked hard to get as hated as he is today.

Mainly it gets worse Spanky because the republicans in congress are doing everything they can to make our country fail.

Somehow it is more self satisfying to you to blame President Obama when it is the republicans utter devotion to the rich over country that is the real problem.

We are all well aware until the republicans raise taxes on the richest they are totally unconcerned about the debt or jobs or the economy.

So if you are really concerned Spanky, you should call you congress person and tell him to raise taxes on the richest and while he is at it close some of those tax loopholes. Tell him that our country needs more revenue to get it moving again so we can invest in American infrastructure.

#2.5 - Fri Aug 26, 2011 5:05 PM EDT

Ok Americans First earlier you were talking about the "subsidies" given to big oil. Why don't you tell me what you propose to do to stop those "subsidies." Start with what "subsidies" you are specifically talking about.

I see two possible ways. One would cause immediate layoffs. The other would run afoul of the Equal Protection Clause.

So tell me how you see going about it. See, you keep talking about taxes, but you don't know anything about the tax system, why it is written the way it is or even WHO wrote it. So other than gross generalities, you have nothing to say.

Tell me about which "loopholes" you think should be closed. Cause I have to tell you AF - I don't think you have a clue. In fact I suspect you don't even know what a "loophole" is, as compared to a deduction, exemption, a credit or any of the other mechinisms in the IRC that allow one to calculate taxes owed.

So here is your chance AF - prove me wrong, cause brother I would love to have a meaningful conversation about tax codes, loophole and the actual taxes the rich and businesse3s pay.

Spanky anything to change the subject about raising taxes for richest.

I know the rich have had tax cuts for 10 years and have amassed huge sums of money while America was getting the bill and the republicans getting the donations.

While I may not be a tax expert you know as well as I do the rich have more deductions and pay less (smaller percentage) tax than the poor.

Personal example I was a self employed seamstress and owned and rented out the other half of a duplex. The seamstress money I had to pay an extra self employment tax on. The rental money after being able to deduct down to the last nail for any repairs against the income, no self employment tax. I only claimed the amount as other income.

Tell me about those poor, poor rich people and how much they pay.

#2.8 - Fri Aug 26, 2011 5:37 PM EDT

Spanky: I did see the poll numbers. With any luck, there will be a wholesale cleaning in DC about 15 months from now. If people actually do vote with the polls, the only incumbents will be the ones who ran unopposed. 12% Congressional approval. If you stood in line at the bank with 10 other people and asked if you approve of the job congress is doing, the only one saying yes would be the guard telling you which teller to go to.

  • 5 votes
#2.9 - Fri Aug 26, 2011 5:57 PM EDT

Seriously AF - you don't understand the relationship between raising taxes and the tax code?

I am asking for you to articulate what specific deductions you think only exist for the rich that you want to end. Cause you can raise rates all you want, but if there are high deductions, exemptions, credits and set-off, it won't matter.

Just look up rates from the 1950's. Really high, yet the amount received by the government was not any higher than it is now. Deductions, exemptions, tax shelters and a bunch of other stuff have changed.

And therein lies the problem, and this is not a slight on you per se. you just don't understand enough to discuss this topic.

Let'stake you oil company "subsidy" claim. The depletion and deprecation codes apply to all business equally. You are asking for the government ot take them away from the top 5 oil companies, correct?

So you got two options. 1. you re-write the code to take those deprecation and depletion provisions away from everyone. The immediate effect will be huge tax increases to all business utilizing those sections, which will result in less jobs, layoffs and downsizing.

Option two is you put a little * in the code that says "the following provisions apply to all companies except Exxon, BP, and the others. Problem is the is this thing called the Equal Protection Clause. The laws must be applied to all equally. It is probably the most important law we got.

The code was written [by dems no less] to foster investment. The government decided it wanted you to buy that duplex and rent it out. Passive income is taxed a a lower rate - which is why Buffet pays a lesser marginal rate than you.

So you see AF - it's hard to have meaningful discussion with you about these subjects. They are very complex, but before you rail against the code, you should try to learn about it.

And I will tell you the same thing I tell others [which always gets the same response] - if it makes you feel any better I guarantee you I pay a hell of a lot more money in taxes than you.

We can discuss the fact that half pay no fed income taxes and how that in and of itself is a failure another day.

It's Friday after all. Summer just got here. It's in the mid 80's.

#2.13 - Fri Aug 26, 2011 6:28 PM EDT

I guess I am just too dumb to understand your taxey thingies and truthfully couldn't read your post. I actually don't read a lot of your post.

I do know that the bush tax cuts have hurt our country and the inconceivable ideal that these so called fiscal conservatives could start two wars and still not at lease reverse the tax cuts. When they needed to raise taxes to pay for the wars. That is what any fiscal conservative government would have done, that's if republicans were actual fiscal conservatives as they are trying so hard to convince us.

I don't want to talk about the tax code I want to talk about the value of the tax cuts for the rich for America.

This whole tax code thing started with me asking how could the republicans possibly care about the debt, jobs or our economy when they won't raise taxes on the richest?

  • 4 votes
#2.14 - Fri Aug 26, 2011 6:31 PM EDT

The Obama tax cuts. The ones signed on 12/10, two years after Bush left office.

You say you don't understand taxes, fine, but surely you get that Obama is doing the very things you rail against republicans for, right AF. It sucks for you, but it is simply the truth.

So let me make this as simple for you as I can - why won't the dems raise taxes? How can they possibly pretend to care, as you say, about all those concerns you have, when they won't raise taxes?

Obama cut taxes in 12/10. They had a super majority before that. did they raise taxes then? Stop the wars? Cut the debt, put out a jobs bill.

Somehow I suspect you are tired now. These are hard questions, especially given what your die has done. But as you said - you asked a question. Problem is you don't understand how deep the rabbit hole goes.

And again - ignorance is easy. Ignorance is bliss. You starting asking the hard questions and you will learn some interesting and dispiriting things.

See you next week AF

    #2.16 - Fri Aug 26, 2011 6:47 PM EDT

Other than the lie about the super majority you know he didn't have. Tell me another fairy tale about the poor, poor rich people and how it is unfair for them to pay a fair tax.

We would have to raise every-ones taxes and the whole world will fall apart if we raise taxes on the rich is the gist of every republican poster here. Isn't that the ending you are trying to lead me too if only I was smart enough to see what you see.

Sorry, not buying it, America needs the revenue and I am sure someone could fix that tax code you are so worried about to make it fair just by raising the percentage of tax over a certain income. Like you can't claim a mortgage interest if your total income is over $500,000 a year.

Let's have some real shared sacrifice from everyone not just the working poor and middle class.

    A. They don't understand the tax code. They have H.R. Block do their taxes.

    B. They think the check they get back from the government is a gift from whoever happens to be president at the time.

    C. They never, ever look at their paycheck deductions- never mind their W2s. They think their employers are stealing from them, because they aren't getting paid what they were promised.

    Drive-by -

I've got to stay home and batten down the hatches this weekend, but here's a quarter for me for an oldie but goodie from The Serendipity Singers (circa 1964?) - I think it's way down there at G-28:

"Ah-ah, Oh no, Don't let the rain come down,

Ah-ah, Oh no, don't let the rain come down,

Ah-ah, Oh no, Don't let the rain come down.....

My roof's got a hole in it and I might drown.

Oh, yes, my roof's got a hole in it and I might drown!"

Everyone PLEASE stay safe this weekend and come back Monday with a new-found sense that there really are more important things in life than our silly political squabbles.

Sorry Bev. but the downgrade is neither vitriol, or obtrusion. In fact it is none of your big fancy words.

It is in fact an objective finding, by the government itself, which of course is why it sets you libbies hair on fire.

Oh and I suspect it might have something to do with the corresponding poll numbers re: Obama's job on the economy.

Drink up my friends and enjoy your time at the DDI. God know you all need the respite.

Spanky you can thank the republicans for the downgrade. Your republican friends determined to make America fail. I just don't understand how you can be so proud of America failing?

Republicans made America fail, let elect republicans for even more damage. That what us out here in whole story news land see.

AF - are you saying they censor MSNBC? Cause I only watch MSNBC. Big Ed's my favorite, but I suspect he will be shortly eclipsed by the Good Reverend Al.

As to your point about the repubs being the cause of the downgrade, I'd ask you to explain that.

See dems control 2/3 of the gov. Dems had control of the House form 2006 - 2010. Debt when obama took over was $10 trillion [Bush on hook for $5t]. Debt is now approaching $15t, obama on hook for $5t, in just 2 and 1/2 years.

Tea party controls 60 house seats. Progressive Caucus has 80.

House passed a budget. Reid, not so much, and we all know how Obama's was received.

So educate me AF - how is it that I can thank the republicans for the down grade. Oh and tell me - how in the world did we not deserve a downgrade?

In youropinion is it good to have a debt to gdp ration of at or near [or in excess of] 100%?

Spanky here's the deal. You lie.

    The Evidence is Clear:

    Republican Recklessness Caused Downgrade

S & P confirms Republican Brinkmanship Undermined AAA Credit Rating. ‘That a country even has such voices, albeit a minority, is something notable,” he added. “This kind of rhetoric is not common amongst AAA sovereigns.’” [Politico, 8/11/11] Yes, Spanky, 1/3 with the stalling tactics did it; get?

Even Republican Senate leader McConnell said ain't nothing wrong with taking the government hostage.

Republicans are as bad at genetics and history as they are at economics:

The debt ceiling was raised 39 times since 1980. So why did Republicans allow a small portion of the House to stall? It's obvious, they said repeatedly they want Obama to fail; even at the expense of thee whole country.

      More good news for Obama:

"There's another thing the press seems to not get. A lot of African-Americans that I've talked to, most of them say that they 'feel this President has been treated unfairly.' They believe he has done every single thing in his power to try to create jobs, to try to make sure this economy moves forward. He's gone against just fierce opposition. I think, I mean if you look at the evidence, that's true. He's accomplished a lot in the short time he's been President. But the fact is, it has not been easy and will not continue to be easy," Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) said on "Morning Joe" this morning.

      4. amassing $3 million per minute in new debt.

Oh and are lead by a president who had the tenacity [or just stupidity] to call the last guy unpatriotic for running up $4 trillion in debt in 8 years, and now he has done that in just 2 and 1/2.

Oh and Obama is also starting t get coverage like he has never gotten before.

      None Spanky,

You seem to have a problem with the difference between support and criticism. Has Maxine Waters or Rev. Jackson said we will not support President Obama? Aaaahhh, you can't answer that; can you?

Let's see, since I haven't recognized any of the songs listed above [sorry, but I couldn't tell you what decade Patsy Cline was from :-( ], I'll try my own hurricane related songs. An old one I can remember would be "Rock You Like a Hurricane" by the Scorpions from some time in the 80's. Then there would be "Cyclone" by Baby Bash (featuring T-Pain) from a few years ago. That's all I got...it's Friday, my brain is fried, and it's time for Happy Hour!
