Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX)
GILFORD, N.H. -- After a lunch speech today, Ron Paul slammed the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, and said that no national response to Hurricane Irene is necessary.
"We should be like 1900; we should be like 1940, 1950, 1960," Paul said. "I live on the Gulf Coast; we deal with hurricanes all the time. Galveston is in my district.
"There's no magic about FEMA. They're a great contribution to deficit financing and quite frankly they don't have a penny in the bank. We should be coordinated but coordinated voluntarily with the states," Paul told NBC News. "A state can decide. We don't need somebody in Washington."

I guess we can just survive on our own without any common good, kind of like a lot of developing nations. Might violate the constitution, but that's okay, just written by a bunch of old dead guys.

I totally agree with Ron Paul. Fema is a waste of money. People should have insurance if they live on the Coast, earthquake area, or an area subject to disasters. I have a home in houston and also chose to have a get away place on the Gulf Coast. It is my responsibility to take care of what I own!
Trillions of dollars of bottled water, psyciatric help, and shelter after a disaster is also my responsiblity!!!!!

Looks like FEMA government employees had nothing better to do than clog up this article's posts about how wrong they think Paul is! Paul is very correct however (I wish he wasn't)... Our nation is BANKRUPT! We can't afford to piss money away down the "toilet!" What Paul is basically arguing for is common sense... A stream lined, efficient FEMA, that the states actually voluntarily support. As an agency, it could fund itself by being more of a national emergency insurance system. All states could pay into it voluntarily to create an agency that actually answers to it's customer's (states) needs... Versus an agency that tries to manage from the top down & wastes tax payer's forced contributions by paying off politician's buddies through purchase of billions of dollars of trailers that no one actually needs! Most on this posting board would agree that a non efficient monopoly is a BAD thing... WHY do a lot of you support that very thing when it comes to government??? All Presidential candidate Ron Paul wants to do is interject some competition and efficiency into government... Not eliminate it! What is so crazy about that idea?

Liberals are funny. Us libertarians aren't anarchists, we are for the limited government that our founding fathers set up in the Constitution. We shouldn't be forced to buy into Obamacare, we shouldn't have to rely on FEMA, we shouldn't spend money we do not have. That is basic common sense that people of the Keynesian school of economics do not comprehend. DO NOT SPEND MONEY YOU DO NOT HAVE. For the most part I'm pretty happy I'm living in the 21st century. I like modern conveniences and being able to have surgery without worrying about having a bottle of whiskey and a stick to bite down on. I see the future as something to look forward to and don't wish to regress back to a supposedly simpler time. Even if I did long for the good ol' days it's not going to happen so I think Ron should just get his old rocker out and let the rest of us lead the way.
For all the tards out there that don't understand what RON PAUL is saying about FEMA: You don't need a screwed up federal system to bail you out, your state or local system would understand how to help you better.

Yea? Like the States actually wrote true Civil Rights Acts instead of "Jim Crow Laws"? States won't do what they need to do in the first place. Never did before and never will do.
And while we are at it - lets stop USAMRID / CDC from looking for cures for diseases that might never come here. Ron Paul , i have always considered to be a logical thinker , who is prepared to reason a problem to solution .I seldom however agree with him . When he makes comments of this nature however , i suspect it shows nothing more than disrespect for his target audience . He is recommending that these persons , who had no control over the elements should be left to fend for themselves , in their time of need . That is an alien and cruel concept , which is not American , That is a cold and morally bankrupt attitude . What the hell , one nation under God means, if in the time of direst need we cannot go to the assistance of a fellow citizen , we must stop and check our bank book first . Americas debate is being watched by the whole world, your prestige is being devalued.

We had this fight a long time ago. The federalists and state's rights folks compromised and wrote the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Now the State's Rights loons want to renege on the deal.
You vote for one of these loons like Perry, Romney, or Paul and you will see the end of the United States of America. In its place will be 50 Nation States and be prepared to show your papers at the state line.

FEMA aka Federal Government should issue the following: No help anywhere unless help is requested by the Governors of affected States in writing and in triplicate. Congress would also need to approve the requests before aid and help is delivered.
State Rightists States receive little or nothing in aid. Let them take care of their citizens.
Bet you that opinions would change in an instant and States would be begging for any aid or help that they could get in a disaster.

You all do realize that this article took what he said out of context right? It sounds crazy the way they inserted his quotes amongst their editorialized rhetoric. He was actually speaking of cutting waste from unnecessary over spending, not cutting the project completely.
After seeing the usual petty comments here, it's time for an adult to weigh in, and that's me. You can have tax money going to a state just as easily as you can the federal government. The state is local and can respond far quicker than the feds can, or will. Common sense and adult logic says that having the states respond and leaving FEMA out of it, so we can bbq another slow responding, dim-witted federal agency, which is an intelligent thing to do. Now I realize, many of the bove comments are made by children who need the feds to change their diapers everyday, but eventually we hope to advance as a society that is not dependent on the feds for everything we have and do.

The town where I grew up in Indiana was flooded a few years ago and the residents had nothing but praise for the assistance FEMA gave them in their time of need (this is a town that always votes Republican). Don't you realize that the states and local governments have less money and resources than the federal government? No matter how much some of work and save our money, we don't all live in the Hamptons and have millions, so from time to time we need a little help from the government.
I hope Galveston gets a Hurricane that hammers it, and they can thank Ron Paul.
It is insulting to suggest that nothing can be done in America without Big Government! IF we gert rid of the waste in the Federal Government then we would not be so dependent on them.

Some people just don't understand the constitution nor do they wish to learn. They want to be controled they want hand outs. The old saying goes; some people are lap dogs as long as they get thier one bone a day they are content with defeat.

Ron Paul is a heartless moron. Add Eric Cantor too! I bet they would be more sympathetic if they were not members of congress and had incomes under $40,000/yr - these people really have no clue what the average American goes through to just live day to day. The Tea Party members are no better - look at Sarah Palin, they made her and her daughter Bristol millionaires. They are all looking out for themselves only and it's very sad.
If you knew, or botherd to find out his full argument he states that it would be ok to help, if the government didnt have to get another loan from China as we are apt to do. He says, fine fund it, but first scale back the cost of our illegal/unconstitutional wars and occupations. It would be very easy to find 500 billion to pay for help. His notion is that we go to far into entitlements and reward for stupidity. Thus, we become stupid ourselves. If you want to live in an earthquake prone area, why does the entire country have to bear your burden when something bad happens? Make it a state problem with a logical and coordinated effort on the part of the Government. Seems reasonable to me, and cheap.

It seems America is worse off than I imagined. Not because of Ron Paul, but because of all the pin heads who have posted here. Here is one man that understands the overreaching devastation that entitlements cause to a nation, and we shun him. Here is one man that actually understands the monetary system, in a time when that is what we really need, and we shun him. Here is one man that preaches REAL national security by strengthening our financial coffers, and not killing off our soldiers scattered around the globe, and we shun him. It's a shame that all you who still "FOLLOW" Obama like he has done one single thing that has made this country better, and PROMISED CHANGE have little more to do than listen and agree with MSNBC telling you your world will come to an end without the Government. Nothing Ron Paul says is simplistic, and none of it is digestable in a soundbyte. Especially a soundbyte from a Marxist theology and Obama flag waving operation like MSNBC. Interestingly, when Gov. Perry got back to Texas on Sunday, one of his announcements was that FEMA would arrive on Wednesday. Apparently Federal money and support does have its uses.
To all those in Texas, you do have both my sympathey and my best wishes and prayers for relief from both the fires and the drought.
He probably thinks FEMA is a Ponzi scheme too.
