Santorum: 'We know unfortunately the history of governors in Texas on' immigration

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Rick Santorum spoke to about 40 patrons at Tommy's Ham House, quite a smaller number than the hundreds who turned out to hear Rick Perry speak here last week.

That didn't stop Santorum from taking jabs at both Perry and Michele Bachmann on their views that states should determine same-sex marriage laws, and at Perry over his immigration policies in Texas.

He said that while Bachmann and Perry might say it’s “fine with me” to New Hampshire or New York having same-sex marriage, Santorum said, “It’s not fine with me.”

“To me,” he said, “we can’t have 50 marriage laws. You can’t be married in one state and not married in another state.”

He delivered a subtle jab at Bachmann after he was asked if he knew when Elvis died. “Last week, so I’ve heard,” he said.

He said he was “disappointed” not to be invited to Jim DeMint’s Labor Day presidential forum, that “DeMint is supposed to be the common-sense guy,” not the “silly rules guy.”

He criticized Perry and former President George W. Bush for what he called lax immigration laws. Texas has the second-highest number of illegal immigrants in the country, according to Pew. Someone asked if he would “smoke” Perry out for his immigration stances, Santorum said he’d hear a lot about it.

“We know unfortunately the history of governors in Texas on the issue of immigration,” the former Pennsylvania senator said, adding, “I understand being governor of Texas is a tough thing. But you’ve got to stand up and defend -- being a senator from Pennsylvania is a tough thing. But you’ve got to stand up and defend your record.”

*Uncontrollable laughter*

I don't know which is funnier?

*wipes tears*

The about 40 patrons OR Tommy's Ham House!

Was he handing out some of his home-made Santorum jam to accompany their ham?

Why does Rick Santorum even bother. He and Cain might as well go home. Rick Perry is an unknowledgeable Texan who has no idea of the location of Cape Cod or anything else outside the boundaries of Texas.

You know I'm starting to wonder - does First Read know about the GDP downgrade?

Seems like that might be kinda important, or maybe a tad more important that the coming and goings of Santoruim.

Oh well.

But hey, let's do continue to raise the immigration issue. Obama new amnesty is going to be a real big issue for him, and I'm all for all discussion concerning the subject.

Saltgrass - what can a governor do about Immigration. It is still a Federal issue, no?

They do, but there are only so many stories they can have per day, and Sarah P. bought a new pair of shoes.

“To me,” he said, “we can’t have 50 marriage laws. You can’t be married in one state and not married in another state.”

However, if it's to make abortion illegal, than by all means state's rights should prevail. It's the difference between a napkin and paper towel, anyone can see that. Santorum is being consistent on his position against man on dog, but completely contradictory about state's rights. Our nation started out with state's rights, and it was chaotic as Santorum points out. This is why the founding fathers wanted a strong central government, with state's rights as a minor check and balance mechanism for minor legislation only.

Let's see if I understand correctly, republicans are for states rights except when the states are for something they are against and then they want the federal government to tell the state what to do.

These republicans are all brains I tell you. No wonder they think the likes of Palin and Bachmann are smart.

Americans First, well said.

At least Santorum admits that 50 different state laws doesn't make sense even if his version is skewed to marriage only and then contradicted in his criticism of Texas immigration laws. Last I checked, immigration laws are Federal so that 50 states don't have 50 different versions.

Hey, the ham house was a step up from the produce section in the grocery store where Santorum conducted his napkin and paper towel demonstration to about three people.

Not really - he was giving it away at the Ames straw poll...

All will have roles at the straw poll, with one or two handing out 40 jars of homemade peach jam that Santorum and his wife [Karen] made before leaving Pennsylvania

Rick Santorum is today's new republican primary front-runner as he has just won the Tommy's Ham House Straw Poll.

I have always wondered where politicians and maybe even those who back them learn to think. “To me,” he said, “we can’t have 50 marriage laws." In actuality you can only have 2 marriage laws. Either you you have to be a man and a woman to be married or you don't have to be a man and a woman to be married. The third choice though is to mind your own business and take these kind of social choices away from government and into the hands of those they actually affect, which is no one but those making that decision for themselves. Any other observation would be imaginary. But the real irony of Santorum's statement is that having or having the possibility of there being 50 laws for 50 different states happens all the time. That is the saddest thing about arguments like these. Legally what is wrong in one state could certainly be OK in another state times 50 if need be. No wonder this country is becoming so dysfunctional. People are taught by the state that people have to continually be told by those who know best (the state) just how to live their lives and who better to tell you than the state itself?

Of course Perrry did nothing, because all his corporate campaign donors don't want to lose the cheap labor. If the GOP/TP could end minimum wage as they would like--along with all the other labor laws and ability to organize, maybe then they would get tough on illgals. That's the real criteria for immigration reform, not border security.

"Rick Santorum spoke to about 40 patrons at Tommy's Ham House"

38 of whom were staffers and media crews - the other two just wanted to finish their country ham and biscuits in peace.

Seriously, Rick - this "campaign" has been beyond embarrassing for months now. If you're all that worried about who's married to whom, go home to Virginia and see your wife and kids for a change. "Family values" and all that, remember? And while you're at it, quit dragging Pennsylvania into the conversation. I mean, it's not like you ever really lived here, right?

When I think of this Republican crowd, I naturally think of all of the really surreal things that Michelle says and lately the rantings of Rick Perry. But I forget that Santorum is even a step loonier. Santorum has all the hate, sells all the fear, and stokes the flames of the most selfish. He is perhaps the scariest person to have been a U.S. Senator in the past 100 years. The danger is that Michelle and Rick start to look vaguely sane when Santorum speaks to an issue. Santorum must be in the race to illustrate that bat excrement is higher (generally) than snake excrement.

So we have Rick Santorum, Rick Perry and Florida's own Rick Scot, all GOPs and all don't know what they are talking about. One says, the fed should tell all the states to pass a bill accepting gay/same sex marriages. Another says it is OK to teach religion in our schools but not science, because science is evil. And another, had the people receiving food stamps in his state take and pass a drug test before receiving food stamps, only 2% of them failed the test!!! Cost for the tests $43,000, paid by tax $$$.

OMG (goodness) Rick Santorum has noticed the 4th article of the Constitution which says all states will give full faith and credit to the actions of all other states--FOR EXAMPLE--if you're married in Massachusetts you are also married in Geogia regardless of Ga's restrictive marriage laws re same sex couples.  He says you can't have 50 laws about marriage. Way to go--sense in spite of yourself.
