Perry in Washington for donor funeral

Gov. Rick Perry is in Washington for former Amb. Peter Terpeluk's funeral.

Terpeluk was a Perry donor. In fact, at the bottom of Terpeluk's obituary on Wednesday read the following: "In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Perry for President 2012."

The last time I saw something like this, it was a democratic family urging donations to a democratic candidate as a memorial to their loved one, and the right-wingers out here went CRAZY over what they called the impropriety of mixing politics and grief in such a way.

Just goes to show, doesn't it?

Anna Molly, glad you mentioned it. I remembered seeing something similar before but not the specifics but I do remember commenting that it was in poor taste, tacky.

Perry's in D.C.?

Didn't he state the other day he hates the place?

Maybe he just likes funerals. Anyone know if he attended funerals for the record number of people executed on his watch?

Maybe he just likes the parties that usually follow funerals. MANY politicians make a point to attend wakes, funerals, those parties. Not only do they gather points for showing respect for the deceased, but they work the crowds more assiduosly than at a state fair. This is like something out of Edwin J. O'Connor's famous novel, The Last Hurrah. (Highly recommended to any political junkie!)

He better have either a good bunker on high ground or a fast car to leave town in, though. Seems D.C. is likely to get more than a wee taste of Hurricane Irene.

Anna Molly - I remember that story as well. And I seem to recall saying then that if those were truly the wishes of the deceased, then I saw nothing wrong with it, so I'd have to say the same thing here. That being said, I could wish the deceased in both stories had wanted donations sent to someone or some organization that actually NEEDED the money, but hey - I think we're all entitled to one last wish, and those attending are certainly free to ignore it if they so choose. Sorry, nothing to see here.

I wonder how many funerals have been caused in Texas by Perry's belief that most people should not have access to the health-care system? If you are fortunate enough to have one of those "good" Perry created texas jobs, you know the ones that don't pay a living wage or have health insurance, the Good Governor Perry figures health-care costs will surely be reduced because most of the population won't have enough money to get to the emergency room so they will just die where they are, this greatly reduces the cost of treating the un-insured at the ER, that Perry is one smart cat ain't he, good "ole" boy, damn straight.

The whole issue is rediculous. If the deceased was a Perry supporter and if his wishes were to have donations made in lieu of flowers, then who has the right to dispute it? It seems the left will do, or advocate any argument against any republican candidate.

I'd say this for the opposite condition too. Too much made about too little. It seems First Read is grasping for any straw they can put out there. It is humorous to read the indignation of the left... as if they haven't done things to raise eyebrows... this being one of them.

Brian b. Whether R or D, it's tacky and I said so when it was a democrat. All the family needed to do was say in lieu of flowers, donations will be given as directed by the deceased. Takes politics out of the mix.

Ah, but Brian - it is far easier for the libbies to hoot and holler about Perry attending a funeral [as if it's their business] than discuss the issues.

Like the GDP was just downgraded again, to 1.0% for the second quarter. That is horrible.

And yet Obama sits in the lap of luxury in Martha's Vineyard, on vacation. All we get is a promise to get around to his job plan "soon."

Clearly there is no rush.

I vaguely remember the last kerfuffle over calls for donation in the Obituary AM. Refresh my recollection - wasn't the consensus that it's up t the dead guy to deem donations/gift to who ever or where ever.

I don't suppose you od al people woul dreather donations be made in the dead guys name to a church or religious institution?

Spanky - it wouldn't fit the left's agenda if donations were made to a church or religious organization. The ONLY way this was newsworthy is because of the wishes of the deceased. Well, only newsworthy to a left news source. But the real question remains to be asked... what business is it of the left anyway? They are starting to sound like two little old ladies arguing over who's cat is nicer.

This is a big story. Perry's comings and goings to private events like these need to be scrutinized by the MSM, because good gosh, this man probably is the next President!

Not clear where the current President is. Probably down at the bookstore he goes to on The Martha's, buying an umbrella with that credit card of his.

An aside, re Irene and D.C., from WashingtonPost.com:

If the hurricane stays on track, the worst of Irene will arrive in Virginia, Maryland and the District later Saturday and into Sunday morning. Late-summer vacationers evacuated Atlantic coast beaches, which are expected to be hit hardest before the storm wallops New England.

The intensity of the storm and the shift in the forecast track farther to the west prompted the decision to delay the memorial dedication, said Harry E. Johnson Sr., chief executive of the memorial project foundation.

“I’m disappointed and hurt, really,” Johnson said. “But the memorial is going to be there forever.”

The MLK dedication had to be postponed, and the story said President Obama is due back in town tomorrow. Just how will he get there if the hurricane is preventing trains and planes from operating?

Hopefully this funeral won't descend into a disgusting display of politics like the funerals of Paul Wellstone and Coretta Scott King. Hey! That reminds me. The chances are pretty damn good that the liberals will turn the MLK Statue Party into a left-wing, anti-Republican pukefest. It would be typical and just like them to do so. Go libbies!

Damage, the funerals for both Wellstone and Coretta Scott King were fundamentally state occasions. I watched both and was quite favorably impressed. Mrs. King was a significant national figure in her own right and earned the attention her funeral received.

I've noticed your comments around here for a few days, and they are consistently just repulsive junk. You won't be hearing from me again, and I'm sure that matters not one whit, because I'm not going to give you my valuable time and attention again.

My sympathies go out to Mr. Terpeluk's family. However asking for donations to a political candidate in lieu of flowers is worst than crass. I doubt many friends, and business associates of Peter Terpeluk will write a campaign contribution to Rick Perry (in lieu of flowers), unless they already support Perry. And given Peter Terpeluk was only 63 and died of a massive heart attack, one would think the family would request donations (in lieu of flowers) go to the American Heart Association, or any other worthy health related cause (or Terpeluk's local Catholic Church, or Alma Mater). Again, despite the fact I'm sure I would not see eye to eye with Peter Terpeluk (or who ever in his family thought the request for political donations was worthy of their husband/father's memory) on many (if any) issues, I do sympathize with their loss.

You got it Joe the vice president is talking stimulus, because the GDP is down, Spanky, and the president is going to unveil some sort of jobs bill. It is like a perfect storm forming around the republicans, they can give the president a jobs bill and that is good for him politcally (and good for the country) or they can block his jobs bill which is even better for him politcally speaking (but bad for the country). They are now at the point where the must play or they will pay. I got a feeling they will just not be able to help themselves, they will kill the jobs bill, and politically take ownership of the high unemployment. They only have two choices they can share the success of passing a jobs bill or they can totaly own the failure of not passing one, it is going to be real interesting.

Poor As Stupid - still looking to the past.

Bush's policies are irrelevant. He's not running, and he's not in control NOW.

Times are bad, for everyone. Whoever is the pres now needs to effect that.

This has nothing to do with race. In fact Sharpton use of English is messed up and can be measured in an objective manner.

I don't think that race as much as intelligence.

Gee, Spank... you can make some sense - on a superficial level at least.

Tell me, did you strongly advocate this principle all along? 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, etc., etc.?

Well let's see - in 1999-about 2004 I was hustling to build my business, so not really into politics.

In 2005-2007 things were rocking, and I focused on making money. 2007 was a great year.

I started paying attention in September of '08 when it all crashed down. I have paid attention ever since.

How can you make such a statement Spanky unless you admit being a selfish uninformed hypocritical partisan? You know about the deficit spending during those years, yet you claimed,

"I advocate spending no more than you have/earn."

Now you have to spin it to try to convince yourself these statements are not incongruous and can actually be asserted together...

Come on - start copping deuces and making your rationalizations....

Maybe it's just me, but I find "in lieu of flowers" send money to Rick Perry presumptive and inappropriate--"tacky, tacky". When did funerals become political soap boxes?

Jody, please pardon me, but see my post #1.4 above. Usually NATIONAL politics avoids these kinds of things - with obvious rare exceptions - but at the state and local level, especially local, funerals can almost be a great big magnet for politicians.

Notice in this case that the deceased is a former ambassador who had been a major contributor to Perry. What's not mentioned in the story is that pay-for-play Perry has been in the habit of rewarding those contributors generously. So he may have frelt his attendance now is part of the de rigeur response, but you betcha what he really wants is the late ambassador's Rolodex - and it's right there at the funeral rites and after-party. The guy's a shameless huckster out selling himself to all bidders.

I know and I hear you John A but I still find it tacky. The family could have avoided any public scrutiny by simply printing that in lieu of flowers, donations will be made per the deceased request. Guess discretion is no longer in vogue.

Oh, Jody, I didn't disagree that Perry's being tacky. I was only commenting that funerals really are, in many places, magnets for pols. Perry probably has quite a record of attending the obsequies for prominent deceased Texans. Unfamiliar as he is with the national stage and entirely different standards of speech and behavior, he just thought he'd be well-received while he flashed a toothy grin and whispered in the ears of rich and influential mourners.

Spanky, I agree, Ed Schultz is an idiot, and he's not so out there as to be funny, like O'Reilly, or good looking enough to be worthy of being watched. Yet they also canned Olberman, who, while just as partisan, had some intelligence and humor.
