Romney beach house expansion: All about the grandkids

Mitt Romney's $12 million La Jolla, CA, home, which he plans to bulldoze and quadruple its size.

It's all about the children.

Mitt Romney needs to quadruple the size of his $12 million beach house in La Jolla, CA, in San Diego, because of his granchildren, he said today at a press conference in Claremont, N.H.

AP

Romney home on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee in Wolfeboro, N.H.

"You know, I got 16 grandkids and counting," he said, "and we're going to have enough accommodation to meet the needs of the grandkids."

This was the first time Romney has addressed the home expansion since the news broke Saturday. He was asked if he's "concerned that the planned expansion of [his] La Jolla home sends the wrong message to struggling Americans?"

In addition to the La Jolla home, Romney also has "an 11-acre estate valued at more than $10 million on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee" in New Hampshire, AP wrote in 2007.

All about the grandkids

Tell it to those who are losing their homes Willard...

Do all of your grandkids live at home with you?

Ever hear of something called a hotel?

Hopefully, he'll be able to give a straight answer on the number of homes he owns, unlike McNasty...

What a PUTZ!

Why else would she suggest that someone's grand kids go stay at a hotel.

It really is sad. I feel bad for the old gal.

As I said earlier, this is Mitt's jobs program. I wonder how many of the day laborers will be picked up at the local Home Depot, "CASH, no questions asked."

Home Depot, at least in these parts, no longer lets the illegals hang out front.

Besides no way anyone going to use illegals in La Jolla. They neighbors would never pass the Grey PoPoun.

You on the other hand seem to be very familiar with the use of illegals. Huh.

I feel so sorry for you too. Spanky sorry about losses, Okay? Since your gold standards and stocks are going down and you can't guzzle up enough; because now you have to make choices between vacation and your ambulance chasing, I have this video to help you through your buyers remorse.

Here is a little Bedouin blues just for you to enjoy.

Yes, Mitt I sooooooo understand. My granddaughters are growing!!!!!! I'm going to tear down my walls and expand this weekend. I need more room. I just hope my neighbors in the unit next to me will understand.

Imagine, a $12 million BEACH HOUSE. A Beach House that costs twelve million dollars!!! We used to go down to Nantasket and stay at a real beach house. An old old New England house, with creaky floors and doors. Screen door slamming shut all day. We loved it. And there were 13 of us.

If it got too crowded, we didn't notice. We were outside playing and swimming all day. With about 30 plus cousins and 22/23 aunts and uncles. Plenty of room for all of us.

Although we didn't actually rent it - we borrowed it from an aunt and uncle. For a day. That's what most kids in the 1960's did. If at all.

9 kids in my family. Plus two parents, an uncle and a grandparent. We were fine growing up in a 7 room house. Lots of fun. I doubt very much my father paid $12 mil for it. What with fighting in WWII and then coming home to start a family right away.

And if it needed fixin' up, he did it himself along with his 5 sons.

A perfectly fine old house. Sharing rooms. Sharing everything actually.

Mitt, sorry - you and the Bush family - all feel entitled to everything, including the presidency. No wonder you're upset about jobs. People like you have always had 'em. So didn't your friends. All you had to do was make a phone call.

The AA community not so lucky. It's why I like Rev. Sharpton. He understands how the real world actually works. Things weren't quite so easy for them. Not like it has been for you and your family.

Oh and you are right I do have to make choices between the ambulance chasing [although I do have staff for that] and vacation.

Can someone ask him how many houses he owns? Cars? American cars? I'm sure he'll answer much like McCain did in 2008. 1000 sq. ft. per grand kid. WOW! How come Warren Buffet can still make it with all his grand kids in his 3000 sq. ft. home? Think he has more than you Romney. Unless, of course, you have a plurality of wives.

"Then the week after that I'm headed to Cancun."

http://www.ecu.edu/cs-admin/news/inthenews/archives/2005/12/061206AZrepublic.cfm
But there's another Cancun just beyond Kilometer Zero, the place on Kukulcan Avenue where the vaunted Hotel Zone ends. And things are not so idyllic there.

It's a city of 500,000 struggling with the social ills of a frontier boomtown: crime and poverty, drugs and gangs, political unrest and a child porn ring whose alleged leader is now in jail in Arizona.

It's a place of gritty "superblocks" where hotel workers live in cinder-block houses, and of even poorer areas where squatters build shanties out of scrap wood and old advertising banners.

Cancun - Gotta love an artificial paradise.

Imagine the clientele it attracts!

This from before Kerry ran for president.

The many homes of Democrat Presidential candiate, John F. Kerry:

Fox Chapel, Pennsylvania (Assessed value: $3.7 million)

Ketchum, Idaho ski getaway/vacation home (Assessed value: $4.916 million)

Washington, D.C. - Georgetown area (assessment: $4.7 million)

Nantucket, Massachusetts waterfront retreat on Brant Point (Assessed value: $9.18 million)

Boston, Massachusetts - Beacon Hill home (Assessed value: $6.9M)

Oh, and he sold this estate in Italy to activist actor George Clooney, just before announcing his running for president. I guess he thought it might not sit well with the common man. ($7.8 million)

Other foreign property ownership by John Kerry is unknown... because he denied repeated requests for this information.

Oh and Feisty 1. the food at the 5 star all inclusive resort is top notch, and 2. I'm headed to Vegas in Early October. Stayed at the Cosmopolitan last time. It was fantastic. Trying to finagle a SKY Room at MGM this time.

But truth be told I could eat guacomole and chips all day long. :)

Personally, I don't care about it anymore than vacations, a bus, or what have you about the president. What I care about is connection to the real world (people say this about the Ivy League too), and sensitivity to it.

Romney joking about being unemployed, for example, does not connect with me. Romney criticizing the president for renting a place with his own money in Martha's Vineyard is out of place. The biggest issue is how Romney made his fortune by being a corporate raider.

I am willing to bet that Feisty, Pat from Boston and Bev and all others who have a problem with this, also criticized the Kennedys for their compound in MA, they also criticized John Edwards home in the Carolinas. He is not using Tax payer funds to add on to his house. Its his money and he can spend it as he pleases. He didn't steal it. You may not approve of how he earned it but its still his money.

I don't really approve of how old man Kennedy made his money, bootlegging whisky. Edwards is an ambulance chasing lawyer. But thats okay isn't it? The hypocrisy of some of the posters on this site is ridiculous. Lets not forget about John Kerry who wouldn't pay the appropriate taxes on his YACHT, instead he chose to park it another state with lower taxes than MA. Who on earth has the gall to own a yacht. Only the Kennedys and Kerrys pop to my head right away. Unbelievable.

But you know what?

Democrats speak up against their party. All.the.time. We expect more from them.

Republican voters just look the other way. They don't care what their GOP politicians do. As long as they're republicans.

That to me is hypocrisy. You stick together like glue. While the country continues to go down the tubes under their watch time and time again.

Even the Boston Herald wrote that Kerry PAID the tax as if the boat was bought in MA. In addition, he did so for political reasons as the boat is owned by a company that Teresa's accountants set up that was out of PA, her official state of residence. Their intent was to charter it out when they were not using it. There was nothing illegal or wrong in doing so.

Everyone in a tizzy over a $12 million renovation by someone who can afford it. The amount of money flying around the country is mind-boggling. However, Romney is spending 12 million dollars on a house his family will own for a century (like most politicians and their compounds).

President Obama, on the other hand, could buy 240 weeks (5 years) at a Martha's Vinyard rental for the same money. The difference is President Obama wouldn't have anything to show for it in the end --- except for some lovely pictures and post cards.

Romney's way is a much better investment that will passed down generation to generation.

And that, folks, is the difference between Republicans (spending money wisely for the long term)....and Democrats (throwing money away on short term fixes).

The president does not currently own his own beach house, or a better example, his own ranch. If you calculated what a large estate costs to maintain while living in the White House, versus renting, or going to Hawaii, or various places you choose, I don't see a problem with what the president is doing. No doubt, when the Obama's go back into the private sector they will make an investment.

BTW, Bush bought the ranch in Crawford when he became president and sold it immediately after leaving the White House. It was used to present a certain image--clearing brush for example--trying to seem Reagan-like. At least Romney is being his Thurston Howell, III self.

Ahhhh but Candice... you can't say anything bad about Obama to the left sided participants on this board. They feel sorry for Obama right now because he's had a few tough weeks... his poll numbers are dropping.. and he's had some really bad golf games... and then of course there's that pesky economy he's trying to fix. So much burden on such a great guy. He has to have some family time... you know the job of being president is really very hard on him. Haven't you noticed how gray his hair is getting? That's his intellect trying to escape and it's changing the color... of course all that worry and concern he's showing for the American people... especially during trying times like this... You know Martha's Vineyards is so fitting for his lifestyle.. $50000 per day is well worth the rest and relaxation he's supposed to be getting. How could you even begin to complain about it Candice?

Excuse me while I go yak.

The problem with the President's vacation is pretty much the same as the problem with this article. It is the timing and the location. Even the hated Fox News said that Obama probably needed a vacation but right now and on Martha's Vineyard is not good for him now. Even Clinton's pollster said they sent him to Colorado for appearance and polling sake.

    #1.29 - Wed Aug 24, 2011 9:25 PM EDT

You know as well as I do no matter where he went and what President Obama did you would find some reason to complain.

If there is no pleasing you, why try?

Hello, Brianb. Not complaining. I just find it so interesting the stark contrast - don't you? True Patriot thinks that when the President is no longer in the spot light, he'll invest in a grand piece of property like the rest of the "millionaires and billionaires." He can't manage money responsibly now --- for political reasons - which is what he seems to base all of his decisions on - and shows how shallow (or oblivious) he really is.

I think, however, the President should invest in some property right now. He can certainly find some bargains. He could lead by example. Show the people investing is a good thing. If his lemmings follow suit, he might single handedly get the housing market back on track.

Rick - I saw Clinton's pollster comment on the choice of vacation spot. He did concede that with so many people struggling, seeing our leader stroll around the Vineyard, enjoying an ice cream just doesn't look so good. I think Michelle had a hand in choosing the spot and his advisors did not advise him well.

I don't begrudge the guy some R&R. Presidents are really never off the job. I have a feeling he can't wait to lose the election in 2012. I'm sure he's learned by now, the job really stinks.

As a littler girl down south we sleep on my grandmother's raggedy floors on quilts. And no there no was anger or animosity. We loved the country life with the fresh chicken in the back yard, not the coups though, the fruits and vegetables, pecan and fig trees we picked, the pot belly stoves which needed wood, the old fashion ice boxes that needed a blocks of ice, taking a bath in a tub and going outside to draw water from a well with a pail and big dipper.

Perhaps not, but dude I'm doing some re-model work on Casa Spanky.

These are super good times to do the work. Contractors are bending over backwards for the work. See, for a long time around here, when real estate was booming it was hard to get anyone on the job.

Besides as they get older, they tend to get bigger and need more room. But you have a family and know that, right Noid?

My Havasu place gets smaller every year, as does the boat. I'm sticking with the house, but have already upgrades to a bigger boat twice cause of those damned kids.

Feisty, I don't usually respond to you or your band of merry liberals that can only criticize but make little if any contribution to any subject. However, I will ask you, and your liberals, why are you so concerned about Romney spending money on his house in California? It's his money, not the government's nor does it belong to anyone other than him and his family. Remember he is employing contractors to work on his house so he is aiding the economy. What do you care how many houses he has, does it bother you since I am assuming you are still living in your parents house and don't have a job, unless you think being first on First Read is a job. Grow up and get a life.

To First Read, why is this even a subject of importance?

However, I will ask you, and your liberals, why are you so concerned about Romney spending money on his house in California?

What's wrong with it? This week we've seen the following posted about President Obama's vacation...

"Foreclosures are at record rates - people are living in tent cities and then you have Barry Obama pay $50,000 a week for his summer vacation rental, an amount many unemployed people would consider a good annual salary if they could find a job in the Barry economy." - Joe in Albany

We are asked to be offended at the amount spent on the rental as if to demonstrate that the President is out of touch with average Americans.

...but leave Mitt alone...he can suddenly quadruple his La Jolla house because he suddenly found out he has grandchildren. Well, that's a whole different ball of wax.

This on the heels of 4 years ago...John and Cindy McCain have 7 houses while average Americans are fighting to keep theirs.

The word is hypocrisy...it's either an issue or it's not. I'll leave it to you to decide.

Da Noid - I never mentioned anything about Obama vacationing or how much money he is spending, however remember it is costing the tax payers money, even if Obama is paying for the actual rental fee. I have nothing against Obama nor any other President taking vacations. I don't see that there is any hypocrisy in Romney nor anyone else spending their money for whatever they want to spend it on.

To me hypocrisy is Obama, Buffet and a few other millionaires and billions saying that taxes should be raised because they don't pay enough. I have yet to see Obama, Buffet or the others pay more than what is required, when they know that they can pay more and apply it to the national debt.

Another hypocrisy is Obama in 2007 saying "raising the debt ceiling shows a lack of leadership in Washington...., therefore I am voting against increasing the debt ceiling". Now whining because he couldn't get a up or down vote on the debt ceiling.

The Bush Administration Adds $4 Trillion To National Debt

    http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-500803_162-4486228-500803.html

The $4 trillion defict added by Obama came from the following:

    1. Two unfunded wars under Bush and passed by Republicans
    2. An unfunded tax cut to the very wealthy under Bush
    3. Unfunded tax refunds to average citizens under Bush
    4. Unfunded Drug Deal with Big Pharma under Bush

The costs of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were kept off the books. When President Obama came in to office, he put them on the books. If Republicans could come out their fact free zone; they'd SEE it.

Bev, add to that tab the first stimulus - $350 Billion, TARP and the first Automobile Bailout,...

PS. This faux concern with optics is so asinine. If President Obama stayed chained to the desk in the Whitehouse - It would cost the country money. AND the staff at the whitehouse would not get a break or vacation.

Ya' know, I've said a lot of bad things about Bush; but I did read an article once where he and Laura liked to at least go to Camp David each weekend to give some of the staff an actual break. I thought that was mighty decent of them. I think this Obama/Bush thing is petty NONSENSE.

Now, back to Romney and this article,...I think for me - this speaks to different optics and motives. Is Romney becoming a California Beach Bum for optics (much like the Bushes buying the ranch for W to @!$%# kick around) or is this a long term family asset that he is upgrading?

I really haven't paid attention because quite frankly, it's NOISE that distracts from the fact that the man bought troubled companies with Daddy's 'boot' and then fired people and sold the assets for a profit. Personally, I don't see how that qualifies him to hold a government position based on his record and experience. Now his ACTUAL record at governance is something he has to sprint from in order to garner the Bat@!$%# Crazy Vote. Personally, I think his willingness to walk away from THAT speaks more to his lack of character than any remodel of an asset does. But that's just me.

Here's the history on the 14 trillion dollars in debt.

The debt was about $1 trillion when Reagan took office, and then: Reagan, $1.9 trillion; George H.W. Bush, $1.5 trillion (in just four years); Bill Clinton, $1.4 trillion; Obama, $2.4 trillion.

Wait, I left one out. George W. Bush ran up $6.4 trillion. That's nearly half—44.7 percent—of the $14.3 trillion total. We all know what did it—two massive tax cuts geared toward the rich, along with all the other spending that was not paid for, which was all of it including slashing the capital gains and inheritance taxes, the off-the-books wars, the unfunded Medicare expansion, etc. The number is staggering. In a history covering 30 years, nearly half the debt was run up in the eight years of the Bush administration with republicans voting for every single spending bill under Bush from 2001 to 2006, none of which were paid for.

Now all the sudden we hate rich people for bring up Romney and his tearing down a $12,000,000 dollar house to make it 4 times larger.

      #7.6 - Wed Aug 24, 2011 10:23 PM EDT

You also forget that President Obama is not one of those who signed the Norquist pledge never to raise taxes on the rich again either.

Richey Romney made his money by buying companies and firing all the workers and then selling the pieces. I am not quite sure how that would work on a national level and what kind of county we would have left. He got rich but left devastation in his wake.

That what our country needs, Richey Romney to leave another republican devastation and we haven't even cleaned up the last one after bush. This time the republicans are after social security.

With corporations ending retirement programs, 401K's being eaten by the stock market (thank god, my money is in a guaranteed account and I didn't lose anything) and now the republicans want to get rid of social security I can't imagine what the republican vision for the old is like. The one I see looks pretty grim.

I dont begrudge anyone having two homes, or a lot of money, good for them. But when they run for office, especially high office, and show they are out of touch with the common man, then I think they should stay home and enjoy their wealth, because they will never be able to relate to the majority in the country and be understanding of any everyday problems that so many of us have to deal with every day.

Willard spent a ton of money on his last campaign and lost badly, it didn't slow him down in the wealth department, he would have got a bigger bang for all that money if he had funded some educational or health clinic and maybe now, we would think better of him.

Lanford Smith reportedly joked about throwing the couple out of a helicopter, then quickly removed it a few moments later from her face book page.

Would you say the same about Laura Bush?

That is not funny; particularly when Tea- Nuts set a climate for feigned outrage about the First Lady. BTW: Why isn't her ass in jail, investigated or something?

            I see a double there.

The joke about the Obamas was not about "killing the Obamas", that is a lie.

It was the same harmless joke around for decades, told about numerous politicians, including many Presidents. The joke relates to who gets parachutes in an airplane that is going down.

But no jokes are allowed about their idol, Mr Obama.

Hey I got an Obama joke for you: did you hear the one about the bi-racial kid from a broken home, raised by a single mother until she died of cancer and he went to live with his old white grandparents. Well this kid he worked real hard, and got into some good schools, he became editor of the law review at Harvard actually. When he graduated instead of taking a instant big money job at a law firm he turned down all those offers and became a community organizer, and went into politics. Well he was elected to the state senate, then he gave a speech at the democratic convention and millions of people saw him and decided that he was nothing like all the scum-bum politicians they were getting so used to seeing. They felt they were seeing something special, something they were always told; that it does not matter who you are, that if you work hard and do the very best with the hand you are dealt you can be anything in America, even the president! So people encouraged him to run for president so he did, and he won the election, he became the first black on the outside bi-racial president of the USA. The kid made good by the ultimate measure in America, every black and white American could be proud of this young man. Now as it turns out many people really admire this young man of modest background for making the most of himself to accomplish the American dream by becoming the President of The United States of America, who gets to vacation with his family at Martha's Vineyard and many seem to hate him for the same reason. That's the joke, isn't that a hoot!

You know Bob you might not think he is qualified to be president, but he is very well qualified to be an idol. If you need an idol or just want to switch idols, this guy has the qualifications.

All the libs here are all bent out of shape about Mitt's wealth. They clearly prefer someone who grew up without a silver spoon in their mouth.

                Ask, and ye shall receive:

Rick Perry grew up in modest circumstances in the small town of Paint Creek, Texas. He was a mere book salesman.

Just the man you are looking for, right? Oops, but didnt Feisty call him a "Bible thumping Texas hick"?

Obviously, as to you moonbats, regarding Republicans, "there is no pleasing you."

Oh, what a great choice....an out of touch guy who feels that a 12 million dollar house is too beneath him or a Bible thumping Texas hick. Hahaha...think I will pass on both, thank-you.

I fail to see how First Read has attacked Romney. I had to go to the top and re-read the article. I guess stating facts is attacking in tea land.

But, then you turn around and make unfounded accusations about how much it cost Michelle Obama to get to Martha's Vineyard. You don't have any facts, yet act like you do so you can play the poor tax paying victim.

Bob I am thinking it is your credibility on the line here.

Romney: Oh Dear, this 12 million dollar house is just so beneath us! And can you believe that the stingy poor people actually have refrigerators? How tacky of them.

I don't begrudge anyone's success, after all, I have been an executive personal assistant to millionaire executives for 25 years, the current one for the past 10 years worth $50 million. However, not one penny was earned by putting other people out of work. Oh, and his lifestyle has remained the same as before the tax cuts and and he didn't create any jobs with the tax cuts he received on his personal income. The children and grandchildren trust funds and investment portfolio increased, not jobs. But I digress.

My issue is how Willard Mitt Romney earned his fortune, which it was by destroying the livlihoods of middle and working class Americans for his own personal gain. That, my friends, is immoral. Watch the videos, they're priceless:

                  http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0711/58952.html

Romney's other big problems will be defending his heathcare law, his state being 47th in job creation when he was governor and his presentation to increase the state's rating with S & P to triple A by using tax increases that were passed to balance the state budget. His Mormonism will be an issue as well, which I believe is wrong, but that is the way it is as evangelicals despise Mormons.

Corporations are people my friend! - Willard Mitt Romney, August 11, 2011

I assume he is doing this at his own expense? Unlike Michelle Obama who has spent an estimated 10 MILLION of tax payer dollars on vacations
