Despite tough talk, Chaffetz won't challenge Hatch

Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) has been making lots of noise about challenging longtime incumbent Sen. Orrin Hatch. And conventional wisdom was that Hatch, like Sen. Bob Bennett, would be in serious jeopardy.

“You don’t have to have 36 years of seniority to get things done in Washington,” Chaffetz said of Hatch two weeks ago. “Seniority doesn’t matter if you don’t vote right.”

Apparently amid poll numbers showing Hatch leading, Chaffetz, a former BYU place kicker, couldn't back up the tough talk and punted.

He will announce at 6:00 pm ET that he will not run for the U.S. Senate in 2012, the Salt Lake Tribune reports.

Being a bona-fide tea bagger - Chaffetz will be lucky if he retains his house seat...

America is going to clean out the tea-pots in 2012!

Poor Orrin Hatch----all that pandering to the Tea Party now has to be explained in the general election.

Much as I would like to see a Dem in Orrin's Senate seat. It's not going to happen. Utah is as GOP as it gets.

It'd be like a republican winning Weiner's old set in New York City.

Wait, any of you all seen the polling there? Makes you wonder how bad it really is getting for the dems.

ABO is translating down ticket.

Noid - ABO.

Or do you really think deep blue NYC is voting for the Weiner candidates and not sticking it to Obama?

Perhaps a little juant over to RCP might disabuse you of that notion.

This is important because of why? Does this story help with the debt issue? What about unemployment? Maybe I'm missing something here.

“Seniority doesn’t matter if you don’t vote right.”

And of course, the less you have been in politics, the more you know how to vote 'right'.

(did this guy mean, 'correctly', or was this a reference to 'leanings'.....)

I guess he took one to many to the helmet being a rough and tough place kicker and all. Place Kicker and Punt you know the guys with the cleanest uniforms.

My guess is he meant correct but that BYU education got in the way.

You bagging on place kicker and punters?

Yeah those guys never get hit, and sure do not have head down field to make a play.

So devie, I take it you were a linebacker? O' line?

Yes I was. Although they are very necessary players I sure don't want either of those guys making tackles or getting hit.

    Offensive and Defensive line.

This TEA party Yahoo realized that the GOP are going to take down the radical TEA party spoilers! Senator Orrin Hatch is much better qualified and one hell-ova better Senator over any TEA party-er!

With the Tea Party tanking in the polls, Chaffetz wouldn't stand a chance and he knows it; he'll be lucky if he is re-elected to the House. As for Hatch, he's been playing a game of chance by pandering to the far right. He's always been conservative but he did compromise for the good of the country until President Obama took office. Hatch is vulnerable provided a good democratic or independent candidate ran against him.

I would bet the house on that one Jody. You don't last 36 years in the Senate without picking up a few dirty tricks. Orrin will mop the floor with any Tea Bag, Dem or Indy that wants to waste their money. The DNC or DLC won't be wasting much money on anyone brave, or is it stupid, enough to step into the ring with Hatch.

      "tanking in the polls."

Interesting point Jody. Seems though that it applies to some that are not tea party related, and broad concepts as well.

How is sky-rocketing debt, crushing deficits and down graded credit polling these days Jody?

Or how about right track/wrong rack? Seems to me that your assertion about the tea party tanking and the reality of that poll are somewhat inconsistent, no?

As devie correctly notes the DNC has to wisely invest it's money, in places like New York and other formerly solid blue states. Chasing down deep red seats would be a silly exercise in futility.

Chaffetz, tough talk from a place kicker? Oooh, I bet it had Orrin shaking in his boots. The Only way Hatch is is leaving the Senate is feet first.

it is the teabagger VS the panderer. there is no winning here. Hatch is a career politician, will say anything and do anything to keep the seat he has had for decades. either way the state of Utah is getting self serving officials who only vote for themself, not "for the people".

Don't be surprised if the Tea Party faithful still put up a challenger for Hatch in the primary. They don't like Hatch's history of partnering with Democrats on legislation, they don't like his history with earmarks and pork-barrel projects and they don't like that he's now finishing his 6th term in the Senate.

Hatch knows the Tea Party is hot for the seat as he's shifted hard right. He originally sponsored the DREAM Act but is now against it and pulled his earmarks from the late 2010 omnibus spending bill.

Watch for State Senator Dan Liljenquist, another Tea Party darling.
