Obama agenda: An olive branch

The New York Times: “The Obama administration announced Thursday that it would suspend deportation proceedings against many illegal immigrants who pose no threat to national security or public safety.”

Latinos are a key voting bloc for this president, but even though polling still shows strong support for the president among Hispanics, many have expressed frustration, including notably Rep. Luis Gutierrez (R-IL), of Obama’s hometown Chicago, who has been arrested for handcuffing himself to the White House fence.

Well sure, America needs more illegal immagrants and the prez needs the votes. Please don't tell me they can't vote, they are not SUPPOSED to be able to vote but then again, they are not SUPPOSED to be here in the first place!

Of course, there was no 'political motive' behind the decision to ignore enforcing our laws.

96ws6 "Please don't tell me they can't vote, they are not SUPPOSED to be able to vote but then again, they are not SUPPOSED to be here in the first place!"

In many states, they allow illegal immigrants to get driver's licenses without proof of citizenship, and they also encourage them to register to vote at the same time (Motor Voter policies).

Perish the thought that they might lie on the forms - after all, they ARE law abiding, aren't they? Well, almost.

In the years since I turned voting age, I have lived, registered and voted in six states. In each state that I registered to vote in, from the first in '72 to the last in '94, I have had to show a birth certificate to register.

    #1.3 - Fri Aug 19, 2011 1:13 PM EDT

The only two states I have voted in are Kentucky and Ohio and I had to show a driver's license. If you do not have a driver's license you can still go to the registrar's office and get a state ID.

By what authority does President Obama "administratively" condone illegal activity? The word "Illegal" tells it all. The President is sworn to uphold the law, not to uphold illegality.

The entire Congress are the lawmakers. The President is not 'Dictator in Chief'.

Let's see, the Hispanic Caucus threatens the President he won't get Hispanic support for the upcoming election if he doesn't stop the deportation of illegal immigrants that have been living large on the American Taxpayers dollars and all of a sudden there is Backdoor amnesty - could it be political,an outreach for both those legal and illegal Hispanic votes? Call me synical but I think yes. More change you can believe in. After all, we have millions of unfilled jobs for them, you know, jobs American's don't want.

Lying about WMDs is an impeachable offense. Should we have started criminal proceedings against Bush, Cheney, the banks, etc. Want to go there? You ought to feel lucky that this President does not want to have to alway relitigate the past and has respect for the touch jobs that all Presidents have, including Bush. Wish your kind had any respect for anything at all!

Is it right that the Chief Magistrate of the nation goes around both the will of congress and that of the people to push his own agenda? Can he suspend laws in non-emergency times? Obama is the subject here, not Bush, not Clinton, not FDR either.

Please "Rob" like you care about the Libya issue (since it's the only one you can site). Republicans were quick to support Libya in word only. John McCain would have done the same and there are no "boots on the ground". If he hadn't of acted they would have condemned that too. As for Iraq, sure the action was authorized by congress as a whole and GWB knew the dems didn't want the "weak on defense" label, so he played tough guy all the while. You must have a short memory, GWB was pushing hard for that war and finding shoddy evidence all along the way and scared the hell out of the American people too and Faux news and all the other news outlets drank the kool aid too - that doesn't make it right but those are the facts...

Are you a native American? I am. I got the papers to prove it. I am a Christian, too (I hope). And I don't think you or I as Christians or even our churches takes the moral high ground when it promotes illegal acts. Sometimes, the church deals out a hand that we as individuals don't like. But, at least in my case, there are moral guidelines that supersede decisions of the moment. We are told we cannot be 'cafeteria Catholics'. That is we cannot pick and choose what rules to obey and what rules to ignore. We are also told we must obey the lawful rules of the secular world. Yet the church now is preaching to ignore a fundamental rule regarding citizenship. Consistency, long regarded as the hobgoblin of small minds, is a touchstone in the church. I can only hope the church will 'render to Caesar..and to God..' as it burdens us to.

Look at this immigration issue in a more practical matter. If I am an illegal and I am able to cast a vote, or persuade anyone who can, it would definitely be for a Republican.

Who else is going to gut the government so bad that there won't be any funds available to fight illegal immigration, drug running or any number of illegal activities.

The Obama administration announced Thursday that it would suspend deportation proceedings against many illegal immigrants who pose no threat to national security or public safety.

The new policy is expected to help thousands of illegal immigrants who came to the United States as young children, graduated from high school and want to go on to college or serve in the armed forces.

White House and immigration officials said they would exercise “prosecutorial discretion” to focus enforcement efforts on cases involving criminals and people who have flagrantly violated immigration laws.

          _________

A political move especially after the cry against Obama for increasing the number of deportations (vs. those deported under Bush). A response from Obama to the backlash he has received from Latinos for his Secure Communities program. Secure Communities requests and authorizes local police departments to turn over detained defendants to the feds if they discover the person is undocumented. How is that not similar to what the Arizona law tried to impose? I think the police departments have a hard enough and demanding job already they don't need to waste their resources on immigration enforcement. Most police chiefs and departments don't want this added job due to budget constraints and manpower issues.

I've said it time and time again, the local and state should not get involved with federal immigration policies and police enforcement. The US Feds should deport violent immigrants no exceptions. Unfortunately now the US policy includes deportations that include more than 2 to 1 deportations of non violent immigrants vs. those committing violent crimes. The Secure Communities enforcement policy has even caused immigrant women who have called the police for help to be rounded up into deportation proceedings. Secure Communities and the frivilous deportation of some immigrant parents cause American born children to lose their parents.

It appears that this new policy to suspend deporatations of non violent cases is a good thing. The ability for someone to look at all the factors in a case is long overdue.

At this point, as I understand there will never be comprehensive immigration reform this stop gap measure is a stepping stone. Perhaps those exempted from deportation like the non violent adults and the children brought here at a young age can be granted a guest workers visa. Allow the children to work toward their legalization.

When there is conflict or even equal treatment of an act by both local and federal law, it is supposedly federal law that rules. Holding up a bank, having an assault weapon or kidnapping are Federal offenses. Should local cops stay away when one of these offenses is going down and merely call the Feds? How does illegal border jumping rate different treatment from bank robbing?

Tom - One big difference is that the federal offenses you are talking about in your post are violent crimes. This policy will review whether a person up for deportation is a violent criminal and a danger to the country. I would rather the deportation hearings be for violent criminals not migrating farm workers, day laborers or people looking for a better economic life.

To your question I would rather have the police respond to a kidnapping or bank robbery. That is their job to serve and protect the public, it is part of their job description. It is not part of their job to be federal immigration officers.

But.....If the Hispanics are "mad" at the President and the polls show it, then Obama tells law enforcement to IGNORE THE LAW. What a way to decide if we should uphold the laws of the land!

Again, this president thumbs his nose to the majority.

"This is outright lawlessness on part of the administration. Whatever the politics of this, we do have a constitution and under it the legislator, the Congress, enacts the laws and the executive executes them, it doesn't make them up," said on "Special Report."

"The DREAM Act was rejected by Congress, it is now being enacted by the executive despite the expressed will of the Congress. That is lawless. It may not be an explicit executive order, it is an implicit one.

Isn't that a lie TT. This President has done more deportation, etc. than Bush ever thought of doing. There was a piece the other night on Lawrence about the deportation of a gentlemen who actually is the only partner that a man with AIDS had and how if deported, the AIDs victim will no longer have anyone to care for them.

It's just a lie, that Republicans have always made the right choices, never get sick, never get laid off, never need help, never, never, never. Never want to come to this country to try to feed their families, just as we do. Whatever happened to "the family of man". I guess since corporations are people, unless you're a corporation, you don't count at all, according to the T-Bagger, Republican bible that they spout about WWJD! Well, I'll tell you what, Jesus wouldn't hurt people like the T-Bagger/Republicans do. Ah, the family of man. I thnk before too long, we're going to see the kinder, gentler people in this country, who actually have common sense and a real sense of spirituality, instead of bible thumping and screeching and judging everyone else, start to come out and make a great noise. The answer, my friends, is blowin' in the wind, and it's not the hot wind lies of the T-Baggers.

And someone deciding on the opinions and decisions of Jesus would certainly remove obscenities from the post they use to do so. 'Teabagger' is plain and simple an obscenity. Never mind how common it is in the one sense. Learn what it means and see how common the word is and how common must those using be. Google it.

So he's decided to make the most mischief he can, ignore the mainstream, pander to members of his bizarre coalition, and make his successor, who at this point will be anyone who opposes him in 2012, very unpopular with Obama's fractured sets of worshipers. Deportation by the way, is not an option; it is the end of a legal process that starts when someone sneaks into the US. Allowing by policy decision lawlessness is surely impeachable.

As bad as McCain/Palin were, Obama still needed the minority vote (black and Hispanic) to win, just like Bill Clinton did. He promised the Latino organizations that he would get them what they wanted for the votes he got, then he reneged and push the Latino problems to the back burner. Now he will need their votes again in 2012 so he is trying to "throw them a bone".

Felony or violent...it doesn't matter. The law is still the law! I know it doesn't seem humane or right but it wasn't right for them to be here in the first place. If we go by the logic of time (being here for years and not causing trouble) then the old gentleman, I can't recall his name, that was deported a couple of years ago for Nazi crimes in WW II should have been exonerated because he committed no crimes here for fifty odd years. Where do you draw the line. Let the illegals in question file for permanent residency and go through the process of becoming a naturalized citizen. It is happening every day in America. Why can't it happen to these folks? I know for a fact most of these people are here with good intentions. America is the land of the free and is open to all immigrants who want to come here. Rick Perry should secede from the union!!!!!

How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think.

As a Christian I have no duty to allow myself to be cheated, but I have the duty to be a fighter for truth and justice.
                    Adolf Hitler / Rick Perry

1- When Perry took over as governor, unemployment was 4.2%. By last June it had risen to 8.2%from 8.1% the year before. Not the right direction for job creation.

2-More than a quarter of Texans have no health care coverage. He doesn't care!!! Just let them die!!!

3-Texas ranks as one of the worst states in education and education investment. A Texas Legislative Study Group Report found that the state ranks 43rd in high school graduations, 45th in SAT scores, 44th in per pupil expenditure on education and dead last in the percent of population 25 and older with a high school diploma The group also reported that Texas ranks first in the nation of states that allow toxic chemicals to spew freely into the air and water. And Perry wants to close the E.P.A.

4-The job growth that has occurred in Texas has happened because of independent factors that had little to do with Perry, such as growth in military spending and the increase in the price of gasoline. Ironically, the majority of jobs that have been created have been government jobs. Over the past three years the Army has relocated about 14,000 troops to Fort Bliss, which is outside El Paso, and plans to permanently relocate an additional 6,000 troops there in the next two years, according to CNN Money.According to a fact sheet issued in August of 2009 by the Fort Hood Public Affairs Office, "Fort Hood is the largest single site employer in Texas, directly inserting nearly $3 billion annually into the Texas economy."

5-The balanced budget that Perry likes to brag about was made possible by accepting $6.4 million in stimulus funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act -- the program that Perry loves to rail against every chance he gets. Perry recently said "Washington's insatiable desire to spend our children's inheritance on failed stimulus plans and other misguided economic theories have given us record debt and left us with far too many unemployed." But Perry loves the money he gets from the Government!!!!!
