Congress: Pay-per-view

“It will cost $15 to ask Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) a question in person during the August congressional recess,” Politico reports. “The House Budget Committee chairman isn’t holding any face-to-face open-to-the-public town hall meetings during the recess, but like several of his colleagues he will speak only for residents willing to open their wallets. Ryan, who took substantial criticism from his southeast Wisconsin constituents in April after he introduced the Republicans’ budget proposal, isn’t the only member of congress whose August recess town hall-style meetings are strictly pay-per-view.”

Well, that narrows the field of questions, and removes anything resembling democracy from town hall venues.

There are going to be a lot of folks at intersections cleaning windshields for chump change.

Who would pay anything to talk to these clowns? If some of this campaign money would go to states to create jobs, that would be a really good thing. These clowns have soooooo much money it is disgusting.

What the F was Feinberg(nice Jewish name uh?) doing at Bistro Bis? She could have donated the cost of her families meal to a good cause in this country, like the United Negro College Fund, but she had to go splurge for her birthday at an expensive, fancy DC eatery.

You have to pay for access to your own representatives and senators? If that isn't an impeachable offense I don't know what is. If they are your representatives I hope you have the sense to file complaints against them and attempt to get rid of them. Or at the very least give that money to a PAC that runs ads against this behavior. That should get their attention.

This sounds unethical -- Representatives are there to represent all constituents, not just the ones that voted for them or supported them financially. Where does the money paid to ask a question go? Into a campaign fund? Why should our tax dollars support members of Congress who won't even do the job?

Typical tea person. Their ego's only exceed their stupidity. Yes you Paul Ryan. He thinks he's in such high demand he can charge his constituents to talk to him. A new low for the tea people. The media has got this guy thinking he's king. Yes Ryan it's all media hype, your not that popular with America, in fact 80% of Americans don't like you.

Another media made self serving politician, just like Sara Palin. You guys are going to have to stop taking the media seriously, they're after ratings nothing more. The stupider you look the better their ratings.

This is the "BUM" who was trying to get seniors to take the 800.00 health care voucher ! As payment in full for their healthcare ... and then they have to come up with the other 6,800.. Senior healthcare now exceeds 8 thousand a year per senior . The senate and the congress are the ones who took the bribes to allow the price of health care to skyrocket... so the company's made bigger profits !

From Pres. Obama's speech after the shooting of Rep. Gabby Giffords:

On Saturday morning, Gabby, her staff, and many of her constituents gathered outside a supermarket to exercise their right to peaceful assembly and free speech. They were fulfilling a central tenet of the democracy envisioned by our founders – representatives of the people answering to their constituents, so as to carry their concerns to our nation's capital. Gabby called it "Congress on Your Corner" -- just an updated version of government of and by and for the people.

I guess some representatives are national heroes, and others have learned nothing from Rep. Giffords' example.

Members of congress are supposed to be represent their entire district, not just those who voted for them, and should be using part of the August recess to get in touch with all those in their district, not just those "in the choir" who are willing to cough up $15 or so.

it's called greed. The main problem in world. the higher the job the bigger the greed.study about the patriots of 1776. not the so called of today. look at people like tomas paine. came here broke wrote a best seller and donated all copywrites and moneys to U S , contenetial congress. Was still broke when died. today charge for every thing. keep every one else broke. Al most all of those were rich. yet donated time and money to the cause. didn't take pay and fought for one thing freedom. today all fight for one thing more money. greed

Disgraceful!

We pay these people to represent us. And they seek the job. Now they are too good to just talk to us?

What's next? Buying votes? Oh... wait....

Nah guys, tis the american way!

Privatize access to your representative. Makes sense to me! At least they are finally coming out and stating the truth.

Money talks, voters don't.

I applaud these people for shamelessly showing us exactly what they are about. (note, i certainly don't give the democrats a free pass on this either, but they haven't come out and told us the real truth yet)

I'm pretty certain that is an unconstitutional violation of the 1st Amendment, depending on how you interpret the phrase "prohibiting the petitioning for a governmental redress of grievances"

Explain to me how it shouldn't be free for you to contact your representative.(less the cost of a phone call or a letter) And I will buy Glenn Beck's next book!

Furthermore justify why a politician should charge to speak with him when we collectively pay his salary with our taxes!

You as a "rightie" demean your own beliefs!
