DES MOINES, Iowa -- Rick Perry dismissed criticism that he stepped on the Ames Straw Poll with his Saturday announcement that he was running for president.
"Well, we offered to come," he said, "and it just didn't work out. I'm going to do my best to make up to anybody in Iowa who's got their nose out of joint or feels like we kinda stepped on the show. My perspective is, it looked to me like the front page of every newspaper, the lede story on all the news, was what was going on in Iowa, as it should be. And, anyway, we're going to come work, share with people our vision to get America working again."
Perry has been a sharp critic of the president, but he demurred when asked if the president should cancel his vaction. "That's his call," he said.
He held the Tea Party line, however, when talking about the debt ceiling, saying it shouldn't be done.
And for those looking for a little Perry vs. Romney fodder, the ever-ebullient Perry, per Politico, blew Romney a kiss and said, "Give him my love."

What is UP with the blowing kisses BS?
First Bachmann, now Perry...
Listen folks this is a Presidential campaign NOT a damn beauty pageant!
Where's sister Sarah with her fancy pageant walking?
That blowing kisses thing must be a secret GOP code for stuff it.
Guess it's better then the pic's of Michelle & Marcus blowing corn dogs... lol
I know Michele hasn't done an honest days work in years....living off taxpayers at every level, but good grief she should tell her manicurist to trim those claws!
Really ugly.....just shorten those nails, unless Marcus likes it!
The kiss throwing, really! Perry is a hugger too (like...Dubya), and you can see how some don't like the intrusion in their personal space--funny. But Palin takes the crown for trying to steal the spotlight. And these two idiots wonder why the establishment (including the Bush crowd) dislikes them.
And like Perry, I'm waiting for his Katie Couric moment. Things will get more interesting then...
OMG Big breaking story -- politician dismisses criticism of timing of political announcement.
LoL Back to the cooking shows.
Of the entire Republican field running, the most scariest and dangerous to the country is Rick Perry. The DNC just needs keeps hammering the Perry record and statementsm and we the people will see that Red Neck Cowboy fail.
"Perry has been a sharp critic of the president, but he demurred when asked if the president should cancel his vaction. "That's his call," he said."
Well, I see Governor Perry has already learned Rule #1 of political question-dodging. Like, why go on record as saying the President doesn't deserve to take a vacation, when you can get away with that old stand-by "That's his call" or "That's for the American people to decide"?
That's easy JoAnne - Obama is the boss, and as the applesauce gets to make the call.
It's good to be the king. Except when the kingdom is turning to crap on a stick and there is nothing you can do about it, which is why Obama will remain oin vacation.
Yeah right Spankster..That huge TURD GWB and the Banana Republican House handed him is going to take years to clean up.
Spanky - Looks like Perry's not the only one who passed Dodgeball 101 with flying colors - the next thread after this one has Romney being quoted as saying "I think the American people would rather see him in Washington" in answer to the same question. Can't they just answer the question themselves? What's so freaking hard about saying "NO, I don't think the President deserves a vacation"?
By the way, the "crap on a stick" discussion is over on the thread about Perry's Statement of Candidacy. Feisty dug up some really funny pictures. And there's still time for you to enter my contest!
You may be right Torpedo, but the problem for Obama, as so neatly highlighted by Romney in the above quote is all the stuff he said.
You remember, like how he said very clearly that he would fix it, and that if he couldn't he'd be a one term pres.?
Expectations. He set them very high.
But interesting point you raise Torpedo - just what are the dems in the House and Senate doing to help out?
Torpedo,
He was also handed 7% unemployment and an AAA Credit rating too.
Spanky..
They're ALL on vacation too...till after labor Day!.
Washington is deserted.
Gonna need to be a very productive Congressional session to get everything done by Nov 1.
I just made myself laugh.
Pretty much the same here. No one wants to do anything in August. No depositions, no hearings, nada.
So a bus tour - is that working? Must be as we are paying for it. Seems like the dude has a nice shiny plane he could use.
We really need to be buying buses?
Here is the problem Spanky: The Republicans march in like Storm Troopers in lockstep to oppose ANYTHING this President puts on the table...Remember you got 98% of what you wanted. Don't get me wrong...From my perspective this President doesn't get it. He should have had the testicles to use the 14th amendment and raise the debt limit AND risk impeachment. Then he could have gone on to the original proposal from the gang of 6 and put the 10 to 1 cut to revenue on the table. All this being said, I will hold my nose when voting in 2012.
As WC Fields would say: "I'd rather be in PHiladelphia."
Why would anyone want to be in Washington DC in August ?
It used to be that they would have the 4th of July activities, wrap up a few items (usually pork to take home) and then be gone from July 15 to Labor Day. Frankly, it is so much better to not have any politicians in Washington DC to mess up the country. They could meet twice a year, January & September. and it would be OK. Listen to the state of the union and pass the budget.
Maybe a third time to approve the Presidential appointments.
Less time in Washington just means more time to be bribed, I mean um, more time to meet with highly concerned individuals who just happen to represent major corporations who are willing to support their reelection campaigns.
Paul-Florida
He was also handed 7% unemployment and an AAA Credit rating too.
..and an economy that was about to shed 3 million jobs, a banking system that would have collapsed under the weight of the mortgage crisis and a country that was ready to skip the whole recession part and head directly into a Great Depression that would have made 1929 look like child's play.
Just in case you forgot.
[Pretty much the same here. No one wants to do anything in August. No depositions, no hearings, nada.]
No one gets parking tickets in August? Ambulances don't run in August?
...say it ain't so, Schpanky...lawyerin's hard, ain't it!
Or maybe trying to dodge how many vacation days he's taken as governor?
State's Rights, the double-edged sword, was tried in the early days of our country, and it failed. Please, GOP/TP candidates, learn your history from a text book printed somewhere other than Texas.
And all this was before the ICA (International Coalition of Apostles) Prayer Meeting that no other governor would attend. He can't hide from national media when running for POTUS. Perry is going to be Sarah Palin meets Christine O'Donnell in cowboy boots.
Wait, wait.
So who is the big evil bogeyman now?
Is it the "Lock-step" voting republicans; or
the Kock bros.; or
Wallstreet; or
ICA?
Or is it just anyone who is not all in on the libbie agenda? Cause I gotta say, right now that is an even decreasing group.
Oh and Torpedo - or anyone else please explain the 10 to 1 ratio to me. Why do we need any revenue? Clearly it's all about cuts, so what would be wrong with just 9 to 0?
Seems simpler and less to fight about. I know, no fun, right?
Ira-
First...greetings.
As someone (that would be you...untypically for First Read) who is pretty well informed on issues related to economics, I'd like to ask your opinion...especially in light of your reply to Paul.
It seems to me (someone not at all well versed in economics or related theory) that our government's response (Bush AND Obama; TARP AND the '09 economic stimulus bill) to the economic crisis in the fall of '08 was ultimately self-defeating for any nation purporting to have a capitalistic economic system.
As a result, we now have a whole new vocabulary.
Example: "Zombie bank".
Definition: A bank that, by all outward appearances, is a viable financial institution...except, it has so much bad debt on its books, it should not be considered viable. It only continues to operate because of the intervention of the federal government. On the merits, such an institution should be considered a failure...and allowed to suffer the fate of any company whose leadership makes bad decisions. Perhaps such business leaders should also face criminal prosecution, where appropriate. Your thoughts?
In your opinion, Ira, what are the long-term consequences of propping up business that, by any objective free-market standard, should have failed because of miserable leadership and been replaced or superceded by institutions with healthy leadership and sound business practices?
I have conservative friends who parrot President Bush and his Treasury Secretary, Hank Paulson, and continue to insist that the measures taken prevented the freezing up of the world's credit markets.
If my friends are correct...
What are the consequences of intervening to save financial institutions or corporations that should have failed...based on their merits?
Do we know, Ira?
Rick Perry is a slick willie . If those who care look into his background , they will surely finds things that are not ok. Perry is also not very smart, his college gpa was 2.1. We have had enough of Texas cowboys pretending they know things when they really don't . we as a nation should do better . President Obama and Bill Clinton are two of the smartest President in recent history . .
Well Rick, let's say we pull all those military bases, farm subsidies and NASA outa TEXASS and let ya'll pull yourselves "up by your bootstraps." Oh and howbout we let the TEXASS National Guard patrol the border. After all we need to protect those minimum wage jobs you're creating for TEXANS right?
Tell you what Torpedo, when Slick Rick starts to secede from the Union.....I'll stay on the side with Lackland AFB, Fort Sam Houston, Fort Hood, Fort Bliss, and everything in between...from East to West, north to south.....
Slick Rick and the newly formed union of whatever sandwiched between Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana and New Mexico......Doubt that the Alamo movie would have a sequel!
Funny thing is Torpedo - we got us all them fine things here in Cali.
You know the progressive paradise that is literally imploding as we speak.
In fact we have, at various times used our National guard to patrol the boarder.
Well Spanky..The subject was TEXASS but since you brought it up..I'll agree that the gubment sector unions have gotten out of hand. I don't believe that is the whole problem in your state and I am not well informed enough to comment on the Cali budget crisis. I do seem to recall though that they pay out more than receive from the feds. Correct me if I am wrong.
I think that's true Torpedo, and frankly know one knows or is informed about all the wrongs on Cali.
But my point was simply that other states have just as many resources at Texas.
And they have that really sweet income tax thing.
Also as of yet they, unlike us have not issued IUOs.
Texas and that SOCIALIST state of Alaska have OIL. Just in case you forgot!
I think he deserves the criticism. He could have announced any day last week or waited until Sunday. His stepping on the toes of the Ames GOP Straw Poll ranks up there with Sarah Palin's bus tour which always makes an appearance to disrupt other candidate's announcements and events. Tacky.
Good one Jody. Very insightful.
So what you are saying is that a career politician is playing, wait fcor it...politics.
Huh, now who would have seen that coming, eh Jody?
So Jody - how's about you compare and contrast the two current bus tours. You know we got Palin's tour and obama's tour.
Say Jody, you don't think Obama is taking out in a bus to draw attention away from the repubs to himself, do you?
Tacky, no?
Didn't say it wasn't political or anything else you mentioned now did I, Schpanky. There are no Straw Polls where the President is stopping this week so he's not stepping on anyone's toes. Once again, the inane drone trys to change what was said into something that was not said.
Yeah, probably right about the inane drone part. As for the rest you have missed the entire point, of your own post in fact. Or you are just having trouble gyrating to fit what he does into the narrative. A truly hard task I grant you.
So tell us Jody, why is Obama hitting the road. In a bus no less?
I got a motor home and I'll tell you I don't think I'd use it too much if I had a big old airplane like Obama.
[I got a motor home and I'll tell you I don't think I'd use it too much if I had a big old airplane like Obama.]
Yeah, the "tenement on wheels" wouldn't look good next to your 1/72 scale Spruce Goose...
Its funny Perry has any time for all this. ....While getting his bus tour all lined up..rightly named "The Tight ASS Express" !
Hmmm...what would Perry-winkle have said if asked the same vacation question of his predecessor, lil Bush who spent more time on vacation than he did in the White House in the months leading to 9-11, you know, when he was ignoring memos saying Bin Laden is going to crash planes in American cities?
Typical nasty cheap fact-free shot, Pat.
You are a moonbat. Congrats.
Oh, look, big Bob numbers takes a cheap shot, who knew that would happen. Considering the right-wing bashing of President Obama's vacations, etc. 24/7, the left is entitled to do the same, big Bob.
"I'm going to do my best to make up to anybody in Iowa who's got their nose out of joint"
There ya' go Rick......insult the folk that you're trying to woo!
'nose out of joint'..........classic cowboy attitude!
The first words out of my mouth about Perry if I'm any of his fellow candidates for the GOP nomination are, "He's ducking me! Why else would he skip the Iowa Straw Poll and all the debates we've had so far?"
His response should be, it is 15 months till the election, and the only one who cares when I enter the race are deranged moonbats like "da noid".
Those of us in Texas know Perry is a wide stance Republican. Blowing kisses is not a big deal.
nisl,
are you saying Gov Perry is gay?
Does that mean he plays footsie under the men's room stalls??
rick perry sex scandal ..... its all there 10 plus pages
Rick Perry is a bigger clown than Michelle Bachmann. Here are some of his statements that he brings to the table.
1. God Is Not Political (Says the Would-Be Presidential Candidate Hosting the Prayer Rally)
2. Jesus Was Anti-Gay Marriage and Anti-Choice.
3. Humanists Can’t Be Good Without God
4. Jews Should Convert to Christianity
5. Public Schools Should Bring Back Prayer and the Ten Commandments
Just what we need. A right wing religious bigot.
The "lede" story? Really? Sticks out like a sore thumb. Whatever happened to proofreading and/or editing? I don't expect to see a mistake like this on the site of an international news organization, but, increasingly, the standards are sinking. What a shame.
All the candidates running for political office make all these promises. I'm going to stop the wars, cut taxes, give the rich loopholes, slam the poor, disabled and elderly into the ground, balance the budget. None of them will be able to pass anything unless they are the majority party. It's all such a joke.
