At Pawlenty event, Perry supporters push write-in effort

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Tim Pawlenty helped kick off the start of the "Values Voter Bus Tour" outside the state capital here this morning. But the most notable presence in the crowd were not Pawlenty supporters, rather supporters of Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

About 20 Perry supporters -- dressed in Texas Longhorn burnt orange shirts -- were at the event handing out Perry literature and talking to media about why Perry should be the GOP nominee. (There's a bit of irony here, however, considering that Perry went to Texas A&M, not the University of Texas. There's no love lost between the two schools.)

They are part of the group "Americans for Rick Perry," a 527 group that has no official affiliation with the governor.

After the event, Nate Crain, national finance chairman for the organization, said the goal for the Ames straw poll is 150 to 200 write-in votes. Regarding the Texas governor's schedule this weekend, Crain said, "He's not trying to mess with the straw poll, because if he was trying to mess with the straw poll he would just come out and say, 'I'm running for president.'"

Americans for Rick Perry is a six-week old organization, which has been a presence at campaign events throughout Iowa. They will be following the Values Voter bus tour.

Rick Perry is running. Romney will be running...scared. Pawlenty will be running...home. Santorum is running home as well.

BTW: Very high voter turnout in Wisconsin. Perhaps presidential levels. That's very good news for the Democrats. Progressives will win 5 of 6 seats.

Smile Anna Molly! Looking forward to your comments tomorrow.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0711/59687.html

See, the Bush/Perry clone story is not just conjecture, it is outright false.

It's all you've got right now, I understand. Seems Team Obama had three pictures as targets- Romney, Pawlenty, and Huntsman.

Pawlenty and Huntsman are having trouble gaining traction, (I guess the media is playing the game the way their leader wants them to- and not, really, covering them). They have a whole fear and smear campaign set up to deal with Romney.

Perry came out of nowhere at them, and I guess they don't have any talking points ready for you, other than to make fun of his hair, try to define him as a Bush clone, and the ever popular scurrilous rumor campaign.

Good luck with that.

No Jo,

As a resident of the DFW area for almost eleven years with another 2 years in graduate school here, I can say you are right. Even during their time together in the state office they were never close. In fact some GOP I know have never even admitted that Bush was Texan as his roots were elsewhere. Perry is his own man, separate from Bush.

My opinion is that Perry a true conservative will not only continue tax cuts but will with the help of a new Congress push through debilatating cuts. Here in Texas Perry has appealed to what I call the "King of the Hill" crowd to paint Rove and Bush as false fiscal conservatives to garner more populist support. Ironic that Perry would deem that cutting funding to people would make him more of a populist.

It doesn't surprise me that Rove and Perry had a fall out and that there are different alliances between the two. What does surprise me is that UT alumnis could support an Aggie. Believe me down here proclaiming yourself a proud Aggie like Perry does is just a little lower than saying you are a proud yellow dog democrat.

Geez, NoJoe, I know I've said this about a million times before, but do you ever read your own links before you post them? This one doesn't have a single word to say about whether or not Perry being a clone of Bush is "outright false", it just dredges up some feud from years ago between the Perry camp and Karl Rove. And even at that, it quotes a former Perry campaign manager as saying that “If Perry became the nominee, I suspect that Rove would do whatever he could to help him get elected".

Oh, and then there's this little nugget from the fourth page (See, I read the whole thing!):

"Meanwhile, Perry has stepped up his outreach to big donors with the resources to fund independent expenditure efforts, attending dinners with top national donors in Austin, and a June retreat in Aspen, Colo., with donors to the Republican Governors Association, which he chairs. He also scheduled an Aug. 9 fundraiser for his Texas campaign committee, for which he is soliciting $100,000 contributions — reportedly his biggest ask ever. Plus, he paid a surprise visit late last month to the annual summer donor conference hosted by the billionaire industrialist brothers Charles and David Koch near Vail, Colo. "

I think I've got it now.....Karl Rove bad! Koch Brothers good!

Saltgrass - Perhaps you are refering to the state business taxes/fees that Perry proposed in the mid 2000's to make up for property tax cuts? As you know our recent $27 billion deficit to the state budget and shortages to our schools and social services were the result to Perry's plan.

What is an Aggie?

Saltgrass can confirm after all I've only been here 13 years and by some definitions I'm a #$%% Yankee.

Aggie - nickname for colleges granted state land and originally, primarily had agricultural degrees. Texas A&M. M stands for military as originally its purpose was to train military cadets.

JoAnn, did you read Mark's response?

Did it never occur to you to ask why the Bush camp helped Kay Bailey Hutchinson in her primary challenge to Perry?

Good grief- do things have to be written in letters ten feet tall before you understand what they mean?

There is, and has been, a huge rift between the Perry and Bush camps. Perry, rightly, questions Bush's credentials as a fiscal conservative. The two camps could not be farther apart.

Moreover, one of the people leading the march away from Perry is none other than Bush's strategist, Karl Rove. The Architect.

Reading for comprehension means that you understand not just what the words say, but what they MEAN.

No wonder you got sucked in by Obama.

For those who care, and I sure do for lots of reasons that have nothing to do with money, the market is up over 300 points with 10 minutes to go.

The Fed issued a statement today that said nothing we did not know. We're not in a recession but all indicators are weak and the economy is stalled in first gear.

Additionally, they said they would not intervene, there would be no interest rate increases.

In other words, business as usual for the Fed in a very weak economy.

Thanks for running it down Richard, sometimes I need a refresher.

Off topic: people are saying the crowd turnout in Wisconsin is giant. Maybe historic.

I think a number of repubs are going to be cleaning out their desks once this day is done.

The people of Wisconsin are cheesed (no pun).

The Wisconsin recall outcome is important for both sides..The BIG and most important developement is that the Dems , Progressives , and Independents are fighting the arrogant mindset of the GOP-T nuts..Democracy is still alive (if not completely well ) in Wisconsin......Vote Independent !
