Obama pays respect to fallen U.S. soldiers

President Obama has arrived at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to pay respect to the U.S. soldiers who died when Taliban forces shot down a U.S. helicopter in Afghanistan.

Per the pool report:

President Obama has arrived at Dover Air Force Base on an unannounced trip. He is here to pay respects to the American troops who were killed in the Chinook helicopter crash in Afghanistan over the weekend. 30 Americans died, many of them Navy SEALS, in the deadliest single incident for American forces since the Afghan war began a decade ago. The motorcade left the White House in secret at 11:34 AM. After a short drive with stops at traffic lights, we arrived at Fort McNair for a helo flight through muggy gray haze over the Chesapeake Bay and into Delaware.

Kudos Mr. President!

May we all take a moment of silence to remember these American hero's who were taken from us far too soon?

To the families & friends who have lost their loved ones - please take comfort in knowing they may be gone but, they will never be forgotten...

I agree, partly. We as Americans will probably forget once the MSM is done with this story and moves on to another tragedy.

I feel for the families who lost their loved ones in that horrible incident. I couldn't imagine if one of those soldiers, or even the dog, were my family. Let's all hope that they did not die in vain. Let's see a responsible end to the war in Afghanistan, before any more families are tragically torn apart by war on foreign soil.

Our hearts go out to the families. I was particularly saddened about the wife who is pregnant, and losing her husband at such a time.

We won't forget the cost of these wars, both in blood and treasure. It is way past time to leave Afghanistan. It is not getting better, never will, and in fact is becoming more dangerous. And for what? So financial aid can line the pockets of a corrupt regime? We need to stop all the money flowing into Afghanistan and Iraq, and use that money here to help Americans. And we need to do it now.

In the meantime, thanks to all who serve.

I for One, beleive the End of the Afghanistan War should've began right after Osama Bin Laden was Taken Out! Thats what we were told was gonna happen!

Somehow the Mission changed & this is what Happens.

As The RedNeck above says:

On behalf of a Greatful Nation, TY for your service & Rest In Peace!

Bravo, Mr. President. Thoughts and prayers to the families and friends of the brave military personnel who died. No doubt your presence meant a great deal to those families.

Lawrence O'Donnell did a nice piece last night about why President Obama and Secretary of Defense Panetta must keep reminding America and the media that we remain a Nation at war. Rarely do we see Iraq or Afghanistan mentioned on the nightly news these days unless there is tragedy to report. Over the weekend, the media spent nearly all its time discussing S&P's downgrade with only occasional mention of what happened.

Jody,

Good point. These interminable wars will never end unless we are constantly reminded they are going on. Reminded of the staggering economic and human costs.

"Taking ownership" seems to be a recurring theme on this board. We, the People need to take ownership of these wars.

A decade ago.............. too many lives lost, too much money spent, too much devastation both at home and abroad, for far too little benefit.

Enough already. Bring 'em home.

If I was one of these young men that died fighting these useless wars or a member of his family, I would not want Obama near me. These men were supposed to have been brought home along with many before them.

Obama, their blood is on your hands. Your failing to doing the job you have been getting paid to do caused their deaths. May your sorry soul rot in hell along with all your Muslim brothers that you tend to protect better than our soldiers.

This is disrespectful to these fallen troops for this lousy president to to make an appearance at Dover AFB. He does not respect our troops and the only reason he is there is for political reasons (to make people think he really cares). GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS AND THEIR FAMILIES.

To Dave and the rest of you Obama haters -- I have no doubt that if the President didn't attend this ceremony, clowns like you would be the first ones to whine and bitch about it.

Rangewolf and David Page -

These men died serving their country - ALL of their country. Their friends, their families, their fellow service members, their Commander in Chief, you, me, Republicans, Democrats, and even those who dishonor their service by being too lazy to vote at all. All of us. If you honestly want to honor their memory, I suggest you refrain from making the sort of disrespectful comments you just did.

David and Rangewolf...

A simple extension of thoughts and prayers to the soldiers familes would have sufficed.

Look, I am no fan of the President's policies, but I am glad he honored their memories...notice it said an "unannounced trip" and left "in secret". If he was doing this for political purposes this is NOT how he would have handled it. Why not save the politics for another thread.

Thank you.

While I am not a fan of this President, His appearance is important as he is the elected leader of the U.S.A., and represents those of us who cannot be there. God bless our military and their families and our prayers go out to all of them.

Can we stop the nastiness for 1 thread to show respect to the fallen.

I do feel sorry for the family's.... but when one enters a sovereign nation.. to kill its citizens its murder !Where does the USA get off doing this ..they when its retaliated againist it becomes a " terrorist attack."...dollars to donuts ..i bet you it will come out " we shot it down" ..like when Pat Stillman was murdered by our people and it was swept under the carpet ! I worked for the Navy and the Army ...i know how things are done and covered up !

You're a nut job! By the way it wasn't Stillman, it was Tillman. It was from friendly fire, was it covered up? Some say yes, some say no.

Funny, you say you "worked for", in what why?

If you think Afghanistan was a sovereign country, you're sadly mistaken.

Our hearts are very Heavy, thank you First Read for remembering and making room for those who gave their lives to protect us. I am especially grateful to those who honored our Fallen today on this board and put aside all else.

Our Soldiers are Men and Women from every ethnic group, religion, backgrounds, Democrats, Republicans, Independents, Libertarian, tc, varying interests, yet they work together on the Battle Field to make America a Safe Place to live for us and our children and furture generations.

If we can learn from them in this country what a wonderful Nation this would be.

I am reminded of the following Scripture:

    John 15:13

    King James Version

13Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

That's what they did and today we say thank you so very much and to the families as others have said thank you to the families for supporting and loving them knowing the nature of their sacrifice and the hardship you have all endured and continue to do so.

Last, America if we can learn just a little of what it means to work together and look out for each other from our Fallen and those Soldiers still protecting us and our country, America would be the better for it.

I Challenge each of us to Wake up Every day and think of our Soldiers those who have fallen and those serving and just imagine how easily they work together, serve together, pray together, their families support each other through it all, including protecting and looking out for each other and Our Nation (you and me and our families) together, if we learn only this we can come together renewed to become One Nation Under God

Less make their Service count for Much every single day!

God Bless and Thank you All
