Obama to speak at 1:00 pm ET

Earlier this morning, we asked when we'd hear from President Obama -- after Friday night's S&P downgrade and after Saturday morning's sad news out of Afghanistan.

Well, the White House has announced that the president will deliver a statement at 1:00 pm ET.

Considering that the only name I heard mentioned as a possible replacement was Jon Corzine, it does not matter.

He'll stay true to form, it seems. We'll get the inane statement today, another next week, and then, finally, in three weeks, something coherent.

It will be too late by then, of course.

Looks like Perry is getting in- so, maybe the media will regret keeping Daniels out of the race.

They are SOOOO going to hate having another Texas republican president- with a republican senate and house, to boot.

Then, we'll see some debt cutting, and job growth. I guess the media will tell us that the seeds of the real recovery were planted by Obama. They do, so, believe in fairy tales.

Not I, GBO. I know for a fact that being governor of the same state does NOT make two people clones of each other.

The liberals, (and you know as well as I that the media is so far left they cannot see the middle), are another story.

This is going to make their heads explode.

So who's the biggest idiot?

The person who said that unemployment will not exceed 8.5% once the stimulus is passed; OR

The person who said just two months ago that the country's credit rating would not get downgraded?

Perhaps this administration should get out of the prediction business. It's just not very good.

It is totally predictable that the worshippers on this site seek to reassign the blame for this latest failure- the single greatest failure of any president in the over two hundred year history of this country.

I say, let's have a look at that Libya thing again. Add in the billions he gave his donors, the misappropriation of the repaid TARP funds. . .

And impeach him.

It's a lead pipe cinch he won't take questions. Not that the media would ask anything more difficult than "gee, whiz- isn't S&P mean?"

Two hundred thirty five years without a downgrade.

Until Obama.

The President's address was just exactly right - the market today for US bonds was very strong, the S&P downgrade indeed reflected the dysfunctional rigidity of the Tea Party, and the need for Congress to act more rationally is evident. Interesting that he has decided to put together a series of proposals for the Super Committee to consider.

His acknowledgement of the tragedy in Afghanistan also properly cried "shame!" on the obstructionists who reject the values of the nation.

Amazing how many people forget that the President warned us that Congress needed to pass a $4 trillion debt reduction plan like the "grand bargain" or the S&P would lower our credit rating.

Instead of listening to the President, many people listened to Speaker Boehner's rebuttal where he claimed the President wasn't serious about debt reduction.

Let's see, Speaker Boehner and Senator McConnell designed the bill that passed. It cut the debt by half of what the President said was necessary to avoid the credit downgrade.

Congress should have listened to the President.

Oh well, what can we expect when 25% of the country still thinks the President wasn't born in the US.

Lets speculate on what Obama will say - it can go one of several ways:

1) The economy is strong, the markets are sound (too bad no one will believe it)

2) We have to work together, have a balanced approach, do the right thing, have a shared sacrifice, work towards a common goal (all fluff, no substance).

3) The Congress/Republicans/Tea Party/George Bush/S&P are to blame

4) Yes We Can - but not this term, next term

Dow's now down 326

When Obama used to get criticised, the Libs would go "Yeah, well, look at the stock market". You can't even point to that as a success anymore Libs.

I'm not fan.

But let's look at reality on this one.

A lot of bond-agencies have municipals wherein the entire operating line of the municipal fund is "To invest in bonds of agencies with a AAA rating."

Of course the market must go down, a lot of funds are required by law to liquidate US treasury bonds right now.

Wait a week or two, for the dust to settle. That's when you'll see the 'real' ramifications of the action and not the knee-jerk/mandated activity.

It won't go down that far. Heck, we fully repudiated the debt in '34. When we could no longer afford to commit to pay bondholders.

I noticed a lot of people like to overlook that, or are just plain ignorant when talking about the current crisis. It's nothing new, y'all. And, eventually, we'll be forced to repudiate it again. It's in the nature of government and credit.

    #2.13 - Mon Aug 8, 2011 12:43 PM EDT

You can't even point to that as a success anymore Libs.

You know, JoAnna, it's funny. I saw this coming a long time ago, and acted accordingly.

But my view about WHY it was coming had less to do with President Obama, and a lot more with what I was observing in the thinking and behavior of the Tea Party and the Republicans in general. They're every bit as "transparent" as President Obama.

On Tuesday, your side declared 98 percent victory and crowed about the defeat of the Democrats.

But the fact that the market has refused to rally around the deal is no surprise to me.

Granted, President Obama let the Tea Party and the Republicans drive the bus -- and oh, by the way, by inference you might reasonably conclude that I saw THAT coming, too -- but driving it, they are.

As the liberals were trying to bait the conservatives with lines like we are racists, those taunts never changed the fact that Obama is incapable of handling the pressures associated with the job. For all the retoric thrown our way, the direction of this country has dramatically declined. Either he does know what he's doing, and doing this on purpose, or he doesn't know what he's doing... the guy is bad for America. His failures outweigh his successes by miles. Lets say the US is a corporation who hires a CEO to make the corporation richer. But there is a small group of subordinates that no matter what the CEO tries this group sabotages, and the corporation can't do nothing to fire them. That example is what is happening in the US. The president's actions are being sabotaged by a small group of the leaders in congress. Their main priority have been to make sure Obama fails. So, unless that small group leaves or gets fire this will continue to happen because unlike a corporation the US will not be able to survive unless the president have success. The president is like the CEO, when CEOs fail so do the companies those CEOs work for.

Excuse me, but the President repeatedly warned that we needed $4 trillion in debt reduction.

He told Americans to contact Congress and ask their delegates to support the $4 trillion debt reduction plan known as the "grand bargain".

Unfortunately, Congress refused. In fact, Speaker Boehner and Senator McConnell were the ones who designed the $2.1 trillion debt reduction plan saying this is all that Congress could pass.

It's a shame the Tea Party and the extreme left refused to listen when the S&P said the President's "grand bargain" was a step in the right direction.

The S&P even laughed at the Ryan budget that the Tea Party supported. The S&P pointed out Ryan's budget (which was supported by every member of the Tea Party) did nothing during the first 10 years. In fact, the Tea Party supported Ryan plan required 4 more years to achieve a balanced budget than the President's bipartisan debt committee's plan would.

It's time to demand both the Tea Party and the extreme left sit down and shut up. Get the $4 trillion in debt reduction done this week or stop being paid by taxpayers.

You must be referring to the 4 trillion in the House passed Cut, Cap, & Balance plan. The only real plan put on paper - not some 4 trillion would-a-could-a plan the President might have thought about but never talked to anyone about. The "I thought about it Plan" doesn't hold up against one that's written down on paper.

    Dan G,

Let's run ads for months reminding seniors that the Cut, Cap, and Balance bill would have reduced their Social Security and Medicare immediately.

At least the President realizes we should instead be looking at a solution similar to President Reagan. Gradually increase the age so that people have time to adjust and you don't hurt existing seniors.

President Obama continues to pursue shared sacrifice plans like President Reagan did.
Unfortunately so many seem to forget what President Reagan did.

Obama discussed this Grand Bargain in very general terms and changed his mind many times about what cuts were acceptable , and somehow kept bring up raising taxes. Which is a political move, because raising the taxes on the rich would not even supply a drop in the bucket to help anything. All he cares about is dividing the country and preaching hate about anyone that does not agree with him. The president got greedy and now he has to pay for it.

So, a plan that is referred to in a speech, but never committed to paper for CBO scoring is a plan only in the mind of the rambling idiot who is running this country into the ground.

He and the Demcratic party never put one thing regarding medicare and ssn on paper as to what they would be willing to cut. He knew he'd never get any democrat to vote to cut anything. So once again, it was just one more EMPTY promise from President Obama.

It wasn't until the last week when Speaker Boehner went back and talked to his caucus that he realized the Tea Party would never vote for President Reagan's common sense solution of ending tax loop holes.

It's a shame the Tea Party hates President Reagan so much.

At this point, the President and a handful of Senators seem to be the only one willing to compromise.
Rational Republican Senators agreed to raise revenues in the Gang of Six and rational Democratic Senators agreed to cut entitlements.

The Tea Party criticized them for offering a compromise solution.
The extreme left criticized them for offering a compromise solution.

President Bush IS the main person to be blamed, along with the advisers who pushed his agenda. Why did President Bush send us into TWO wars without so much as asking us to buy savings bonds? Why did he authorize Medicare Part D without any way to pay for it? Why did we become so indebted to China under his administration? President Bush left the country in complete disarray -- notice that NO ONE asks him for a public appearance, NO ONE is clamoring for his advice. Gov. Huntsman worked for him, but you can be sure he won't appear alongside President Bush. No matter who is elected President in 2012, it is because of George W. Bush's legacy that the country is in the shape it's in. No matter who is elected, taxes will have to increase as spending is cut (including the military). If President Obama is a one-term president, you can be sure that his contribution to the economic decline will be much smaller than what President Bush did. Why is it that no Republicans dare call out President Bush and his advisers? Is it all because of money?

No one is calling out Bush, because he isn't the president. The president is responsible. Obama knew exactly what he was inheriting remember, he was a senator before he was president. Oh wait, he hardly ever showed up in the chamber because he was too busy out campaigning for president. Uhmmmm that sounds like his problem, maybe if had worked more than campaigned he could have done something about these problems.

The year is 2011, Kate. Obama has been president for TWO and a half years.

Unemployment when he took office was 7 and a half percent. It is now over nine- but actually, over twelve, if you count the millions BLS recategorized out of the labor force.

Not Obama's fault, according to you.

The debt was ten and a half trillion when Obama took office. He spent a bundle- on an Omnibus spending bill in 2009 that was loaded with earmarks, on a stimulous package that was supposed to help unemployment, on travel, and fancy new choo choo trains to nowhere, on windmill turbines manufactured in China, on travel, travel, travel. . .

So, none of that spending did anything but exacerbate unemployment, and add four trillion to the debt.

Not Obama's fault, according to you.

It's not Obama's fault the vast majority of people want his HCR repealed. It's not his fault that he did not direct the Agriculture department to take the actions necessary to increase the supply of corn and wheat and forestall the latest chaos in the Middle East, despite receiving plenty of warning. Ts not his fault his own appointees are enacting policies that reduce employment, rather than allowing an atmosphere that inspires the business community to expand and hire.

None of it is Obama's fault.

So, tell me, Kate, since he is so obviously helpless in the face of so many crises, why do you believe he should remain president. It is obvious that even you do not believe he is capable of governing, so why on earth should he continue in a job for which he is so obviously unsuited?

Just to make you swoon when he appears on television?

Nasty is as nasty does, NoJo, and you are certianly a nasty poster. We all know that you have a visceral hatred for the President -- what happens to the country is less important to you than posting your relentless attacks each day. However, I am more concerned for the country. President Bush ruined the country, and if you think that anyone can right the ship in the same amount of time he had to ruin it, you are mistaken. If a new President is elected in 2012, how much time will you give that person to get back to where Bush left things? 21/2 years? The ACA will remain -- you claim that people want it repealed, but it hasn't even gone into effect yet, and when it does, it will help the state of the economy. I am waiting for any Republican candidate to be honest enough to admit what we all know: George W. Bush was toxic for the US. All the current candidates go back to Reagan -- that was 30 years ago. Gov. Huntsman worked for George W. Bush's administration, but left...why? A policy disagreement? A realization that the administration was bad news? We'll never know. Gov. Romney? Gov. Pawlenty? Or even you.... do you not recognize what happened to the country between 2001 and 2009?

    Over two hundred years old.

It took Obama to get our credit rating reduced.

Not the Great Depression. Not World War II, not the stagflation years, or the market crash of 1987 or 2008.

Obama's incoherent administration, complete with outrageous sounding, the absence of budgets, a foreign policy that might have been designed by backwards third graders,

And a Commerce Department that redefines lack of credibility. See, never before have the GDP numbers been revised by so much in every single quarter.

You look at all of that, continue to lavish praise on your idol, and I'M the one who does not care about my country?!?!?!?!

I don't "hate" Obama, the man. I do HATE what he has DONE to my country. I am infuriated by the destruction in every single area- and I feel nothing but contempt for those of you still so brainwashed that you continue to worship him.

He's a disaster. He's an incompetent narcissist. These are not qualities that typically lead to success, but even I did not appreciate the level of destruction he could visit on this nation.

That's funny, the right's defense of Bush is that he was on time. We waited on Bush a good number of times as well but rarely did Bush address the people with any regularity.

The last Bush wait was when "W" waited for McCain to show up so he could endorse him in 2008; he did a little tap dance for us to keep us entertained.

Blaming 60 members of the House, who have been there 7 months, for the problems of the country. You Leftists are just so pathetic. Folks - there is a war within our Government!!! The GOP/TP are bent on making sure President Obama does not succeed - in hopes of him not getting reelected.

Their sole focus is not serving their Countryman or Statesmenship - it is laying a platform of blame of failure to President Obama.

That's it!! So don't expect anything sane to come from their them - anything believible or anything supported .

The GOP/TP has gone all out ... to make sure President Obama fails and is not reelected... SO America - we will have to suffer for the next year and a half or so.

And then either we vote back majority for the Democratic Party or suffer even graver conseqences by having a Republican President.

This Country will not fail - everything is in play to bring our ecomony back and created JOBS - the Republicans are purposely stopping progress - so they can take credit for progress should we elect a Republican President.

It's like a war for control ... only without TROOPS, GUNS and TANKS.

P.S. - I see oil prices are dropping - so why aren't the GOD DAMN GAS PRICES !!!!!!

Patriotism, morals and honesty are not part of the "new" republicans platform.

The trolls are out thick today, trying to blame Obama even before he speaks.

This whole take-over by the rich reminds me of a game my boys were playing one day with play money. The 6 year old figured out a way to get all the money and made rules so he would always have all the money. When both of the 4 year olds figured out the game was rigged and they could never win back any money, they wanted to change the game rules to just give them a chance. The older with all the money refused to change the rules to be more fair. The little guys after arguing with no results finally just left in disgust and went and played somewhere else.

The rich are trying to take complete control of our country, the Ryan budget plan was to make it virtually impossible to raise taxes again on the rich when you need a 2/3 majority to do it.

Once the game is rigged you better believe the rich are not going to let in fairer rules like allowing themselves to be taxed.

If they are trying this hard with a democratic president and democratic senate to destroy America and hand her to the rich. Think of the damage they can do if we are stupid enough to ever vote for another republican again for anything.

What amazes me is that I continue to read comments from people citing "bipartisan" and "transparancy". Then comes the rant from the far right righteous that Obama has spent to much money. The loones fom the far liberal left say it was Bush. All the while people continue to praise either party as if it has the answers while the other party is seaking to destroy America.

This country is being torn apart with greater divide because of both major partys unwillingness to work with each other. Both have equal fault. Check any member of the house and look at their voting record. There is almost no bipartisan voting. These elected officials (dems/reps alike) vote for what their party brothers/sisters initiate and against what the other party initiates. The nation is in the mess we are in because our elected officials are more concerned with their political careers and the party they represent than any individual American or the country as a whole.

Until a time comes when there is no party affiliation and people are judged and elected by what they say/do I doubt that we will move far beyond the current problems we have and mount even more.

For everyone who supports cap, cut, and balance...

If ending tax loopholes is off the table as the Tea Party has stated, across the board cuts of 29% would be required.

55 million Americans will receive Social Security checks in 2011 would be required to take a 29% cut in their checks.

43 million Americans will receive Medicare in 2011 and would be required to take a 29% cut in their benefits.

There are also millions of families sending their children to taxpayer funded schools. Federal assistance would have to be cut by 29% to meet the cap, cut, and balance. The result would be millions of American families forced to pay more out of pocket for schools. Try sending your child to a public school (average $8K per child per year).

Millions of vets would be forced to accept 29% cuts. That is unacceptable.

Ask every business owner in America if any of their customers fall into the above categories.
Ask every business owner in America what will happen to their business if the above cuts occur (because of cap, cut, and balance requiring immediate changes).

All of this assumes across the board cuts (29% reduction would be required). Lawmakers could play with the numbers (maybe only 20% cuts to our military, but 35% cuts to our seniors).

Every business owner I have talked to says they will lay off workers and many say they will go out of business if cut, cap, and balance becomes law today.
