AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry isn't holding any public events this week, but he's hard at work here gauging financial support for a potential presidential run, doing a handful of media interviews, and burnishing his foreign policy and social-conservative credentials.
In the latest interview -- this one with the Christian Broadcasting Network -- Perry touted his economic record and also extended his support for a constitutional amendment on same-sex marriage to one banning abortion.
"I support the federal marriage amendment," Perry said, "and I also support the same with the issue of abortion."
Perry riled social conservatives last month when he said he was "fine with" a new same sex marriage law in New York, describing the issue as one best left up to the states.
"If you believe in the 10th Amendment," he said at the time, "stay out of their business."
He walked that notion back in an interview last week via another Christian outlet, the Family Research Council. But the correction drew attention to Perry's attempts to reconcile his strong support of states' rights with the desire of many potential GOP primary voters to push social issues at the federal level.
Perry, who is widely expected to announce a presidential run in the coming weeks, also appears eager to polish his foreign-policy credentials. On Wednesday, he Tweeted a photo of himself meeting with former ambassador to Iraq and Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad.
He also has been meeting with potential donors this week.

Oh boy, two MSNBC First Read articles bashing Rick Perry in one day! The White House is officially worried.
False claim that Gov Perry supports secession coming in 3...2...1..
That's cute! The WH is behind a blog frequented by a couple dozen people...
Where do you stand on states rights? That is the question.
Bob_
Where do YOU stand on state's rights?
The Republican handipack of rules for interpretation of original intent:
States' Rights when you want them, and federal sovereignty when you don't.
Rick Perry's handipack of rules for deficit spending and Keynesian economics:
Spend state tax dollars to stimulate hiring; and then spend federal stimulus dollars to cover up the debt, all the while railing against the federal government, the federal deficit, and the stimulus package.
Bob no answer-it tough question for him...where do you come down on state's rights...anomaly?
dangerfield:
It is a fine line, but I dont think support for a federal marriage amendment is inconsistent with state's rights. The problem is any of hundreds of liberal federal judges will at some time soon make themselves a hero by ruling gay marriage is mandated by the 14th amendment.
The purpose of a constitutional amendment would be not to federalize it, but to leave the marriage issue where it belongs, with state legislatures.
Cop out above...not talking about Perry or constitutional amendments, just your stand on state's rights...weasel words about a fine-line sound like the people you make fun of...
Bob if you're afraid to answer about where you stand on state's rights, how about a less scary one?
Do you think Crawford was worth the money? He's having a better 2nd half...
...where do you come down on state's rights...anomaly?
Talking to me, dangerfield?
If so, then I come down on states rights exactly the same way Perry does, only reverse when we would apply each. Where we probably differ is that, when there are disputes, I would let the federal courts decide, under existing principles of interpretation as established by 200 years of case law -- not ideological pre-disposition -- whether pre-emption is appropriate in any individual case.
This is, above all, a federal system, governed by a federal constitution. Unless, of course, it comes out my way if I take the opposite view.
That is a far too civil and thought-out response for this esteemed forum...
You had me from "Talking to me, dangerfield?" Quoting Travis Bickell always gets to me...
Didn't we fight some kind of war or something in the middle of the 19th century about the states and the federal government?
You'd be surprised what I can quote. Love, love, love De Niro.
And, gee, thanks for the compliment. I think.
As for that war thing? Ask Republicans and they'll tell you that THEY won it.
I want a peacock too! :) :)
I love MSNBC/MSN and NBC
Bob-
While we appreciate your comment, we disagree with your premise. As an avid reader of First Read, you know better.
Sorry Dominico, but I think Bob has a valid point.
But that's okay, you [being the literal 'Hand of god' in this situation] can prove us wrong.
How about a nice little article, with some analysis on the White House's own figures regarding the exploding debt. You know the ones:
Total spending in the last 10 years $28 Trillion. Toalt spending in the next 10 year $43 Trillion.
Now we know historically revenues are about 18 % of GDP. So does the white House forsee a huge explosion on GDP over the next 10 years, or are we just totally DOOMED?
How about that premise?
And hey, if you all are not up to it, then by all means it seems like it's about time for another story about Bachmann.
You asked for it...
You ain't seen nothing yet
CONCERT CALENDAR: Randy Bachman and Fred Turner will be packing them in Sept. 9 when they headline at Western Fair grandstand
A recent flurry of announcements confirmed Randy Bachman and Fred Turner, touring as Bachman & Turner will be ripping through the BTO songbook as a 2011 Western Fair grandstand headliner

It's on! and it's in OVERDRIVE!
I've become accustomed to the multiple articles on the GOP candidates. It's great to see the Leftwingers go absolutely bananas over each candidate and have them shriek in pain "Oh [that candidate] isn't as good as President Barack 'I went to Harvard and I'm so smart' Obama".
Fact is, any GOP candidate would be a better President than Obama. He is that bad.
So FR, keep doing what you're doing, because if nothing else, it is your sandbox.
The comical part is, Bob (lots of numbers) sure spends an inordinate amount of time on a website he claims to loathe... lol
He must be a glutton for punishment...
In real life someone would of b!tch slapped him by now for his constant whining!
Domenico,
appreciate your response; impressed you can keep track of all posters named "Bob".
While an "avid" Red Sox fan, maybe just a "semi-avid" reader of First Read.
Js1
with a nonsensical statement like "Fact is, any GOP candidate would be a better President than Obama. He is that bad."
"you've "jumped the shark"
Any one ever figure out how he got that plum professorship at U. of Chicago? He had never taught, had published no articles, so what gives?
And bye the way JAS1 - Dominico and the gang are going to come out with something negative on Obama. Well, ok, something slightly less adoring maybe.
If only O'Donnell would run for Pres.
Spanky,
Not quarreling with your spending amounts or your premise and do not want to spend any time debating /discussing/arguing about spending and percentages of GDP. That's between you and FR.
I just want to correct the % of GDP you state. That’s it.
The last time federal spending dipped below 18 percent of GDP was 1966. Back then there were 100 million fewer people living in the United States, the median age was nearly eight years younger, and the average cost of health care was one-fifth of what it is now. In fact, no president in the last 50 years ever proposed a budget that would bring spending that low. President Reagan’s budget proposals never dropped below 21 percent of GDP, and actual spending under Reagan averaged over 22 percent. Even the budget passed by the Republican House, with all its cuts to Medicare and Medicaid, keeps spending above 18 percent of GDP for the next 30 years.

Sorry to have disappointed you danger. I guess we'll all just have to put up with your comments that just seem to comment about other people's comments. Maybe some day you'll have an original thought, but pardon us for not waiting, or not caring.
Yep, that's what I expected...thanks!
Really? Please explain this, then...

Who knows? It might go to where he finished in his class. My Evidence professor was fresh out of school, also, and a prodigy by some calculations. But she wasn't President of the Harvard Law Review.
His official title was "Senior Lecturer," but Harvard considered him a "professor." He must have been good at it. This is from an official statement by the University of Chicago on the subject:
http://www.law.uchicago.edu/media
(emphasis added)
Hope this helps.
Ira - noted. The point being revenue has been consistent, the spending is now way out of whack.
AM - I was in the car last weekend with a close friend and fellow atty. He is one of the weary Obama supporters still trying not to lose hope. He is also from Ill. and we were wonder just how that job came about. My friend was law review and is very smart, but neither of us could have gotten into U. of Chi., let alone get a professorship like that.
In other words we were J.
Sapnky..
One other point and you need to remember that the numbers I'm going to use are PRIOR to the debt ceiling negotiations and $2.8 trillion in cuts.
From the OMB projections for 2021..based on a 3% growth in 2021:
Spending will be 24% of GDP
Revenues will be 21% of GDP.
Guessing that narrows a ton with the $2.8 trillion in debt reduction.
Just as an FYI.
[Sorry Dominico, but I think Bob has a valid point.]
And Schpanky has an "opinion", DAMMIT!
[But that's okay, you [being the literal 'Hand of god' in this situation] can prove us wrong.]
Wow...a schmat goy like you buying in to conspiracy theories?
Say it ain't so, Schmoe err....Schpanky!
...yeabut...yeabut...yeabut...I thought you said...oh never mind...I don't want to embarass you...you're doing a terrific job all by your lonesome.
yawn......
Hey obamanites,
Please tell me why our president is dropping bombs in Libya. Is he going to intervene in Syria? Are Syrian lives not as important as Libyian lives?
I didn't realize the President could even fly a bomber, pretty impressive.
W- He can, if he knows there is a 'mission accomplished' banner at the end of the flight.
Yo' Rob- what does the Perry story have to do with whatever it is you posted??
Just thought you folks were all prolife....evidently not for syrian lives
Rumor has it that Perry has offered Jesus Christ the running mate slot, insiders close to Perry say Jesus has yet to respond to the offer.
I heard the 'big guy' was not sure if he wanted to send Perry a big, wet, sloppy kiss, or a thunderbolt and some rain clouds.
To conservatives like me, as good a selection as God for VP, would be:
Marco Rubio !
I asked God about Governor Perry and the Tea Party. She said she never heard of him and neither has her partner. ;0
P.S. she doesn't "do " parties, either. ;)
Cynthia that was great!
LMAO :) :)
So Mr. Perry which one is it, states rights or let the Big Bad Federal Govt dictate to all, 2 different stands in 2 weeks. Glad to see your ideals keep you consistent.
[In the latest interview -- this one with the Christian Broadcasting Network -- Perry touted his economic record and also extended his support for a constitutional amendment on same-sex marriage to one banning abortion.]
...and that sound you hear is Perry's presidential aspirations being flushed down the toidy...
No, that sound is Mickey from NY losing all credibility...
Good gracious - could you just imagine a debate between Obama and Perry on job creation?
Oh My!
Hey, Mickey, NY, check out this article from the Houston Chronicle:
http://blog.chron.com/txpotomac/2011/07/ten-reasons-why-the-texas-economy-is-growing-that-have-nothing-to-do-with-rick-perry/
Matt,
Good work...maybe it's Perry who could adapt the "Never Let A Good Crisis Go To Waste" moniker.
Well i guess he practices " Fanny Values " .... like Bachmann does ...because they prayed away the gay ! I saw the 10+ pages of the rick perry sex scandal !
[Good gracious - could you just imagine a debate between Obama and Perry on job creation?]
Schpanky, get with the program, Bruh....Perry would just hold a another "prayer vigil"...
...see how opinions work...?
Now you can get back to watching your Allie McBeal reruns.
Is anyone else getting whiplash watching these Republican wannabes backtracking (or taking no position) on the stands they do take? Rather entertaining. Mitt is still my favorite but Perry is starting to really be a hoot.
Hey Spank, I've dealt with Atty's, and I have to say you guys know law and procedures but in general your grasp of Accounting Concepts and numbers is minimal. As a CPA, I have an automatic bias toward your understanding of financial concepts. That being said I respect your opinion I just don't agree with it. Perry, used the same gimicks and accounting tricks that all Governors use to up his job numbers and budget balancing. He accepted unds from the same federal government that he vilifies as do all Republican Governors.
Uh oh, Schpanky....
People are on to your bull@!$%#...but you have "an opinion" about that as well, right Schpanky?
...Schpanky...?
[That being said I respect your opinion I just don't agree with it.]
Take a lesson from Lucious, Schpanky...read it...know it...live it...
I would not trust Perry in my chicken coup, no way should he run for president!
Remember the devil comes in different forms!
Why does he hear so many voices? He should consult a doctor!
beware of false Prophets!
