Congress: Debt deal passes the House, Senate vote at noon ET

The debt deal passed the House 269-161 last night.

“But much of the partisan rancor seemed to evaporate when Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, the Arizona Democrat who was shot in the head earlier this year at a town hall meeting, made a surprise appearance in the House chamber with about three minutes left to vote on the debt deal. Large applause broke out and members crowded around her,” the Boston Globe notes.

The Globe also notes, “Massachusetts would lose an estimated $400 million in federal dollars next year and $800 million the following year in the federal budget deal moving through Congress, cutbacks that could slow the state’s tenuous economic recovery, regional economists said.”

“In the end, it seems the only people in Washington being forced to eat their debt limit peas will be Democrats, who found themselves swallowing a bitter political deal forced on them by the White House and Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio),” Roll Call writes.

The Hill looks at the importance of Mitch McConnell.

Welcome to Congress… Roll Call: “Freshmen Gripe Over Process but Don’t Block Debt Deal.”

“Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-Colo.) issued an apology to President Obama Monday night for a remark on a radio show last week when he said that associating with Obama was ‘like touching a tar baby,’” The Hill reports.

As I recall, I heard a couple of talkers predict that the Congress 'people' would be allowed by Wall Street to play political games all they wanted as long the debt ceiling was passed somehow.

Although it is not final, It looks like those predictions were dead on.

The heartless repugnicrites have been given, yet again, rusty nails in the coffin of the former middle/working class. They continue to terrify families in their never ending goal of emaciating the people who's employment over the years largely funnelled the money upwards to the massive fortunes of the 500 families. They will not be happy until Americans are willing(and begging for the opportunity) to work for nearly nothing.

As far as the newly elected and relected Repugnicrite House & Senate members' laser like focus on jobs.......yes....we find out they were focusing on jobs........to eliminate them further. The job crushing, job murdering, cuts are the direct result of the new 'TAKE THE COUNTRY' hostage tactic of the soulless reich wing agenda.

Next hostage situation will be, once again, the unemployed. Last year the President 'took John Boner at his word that the full faith and credit of the USA would not be used as tool. Mr. President.......did he give you his word again???? Have you learned yet, that you cannot trust these 'people'?

The Teapublicans are mono-maniacal ideologues. They have no ideas or solutions for improving our educational system, no ideas about how to increase the number of college graduates, how to do deal with immigration, how to create jobs, revive American manufacturing, or develop non-polluting alternative energy. Their one idea is "cut government spending" while their politicians spend decades on the public dole and Republicans are notorious for engaging in pork barrel spending.

Meanwhile, one of the brightest guys we've had in office in a long time, a man the rest of the world has admired, a gifted orator, the man we hired to raise up and unite the country, is splattered in mud.

Thanks alot, Teapublicans, what else are you going to damage today?

In 1887, Alexander Tyler, Scottish professor at University of Endinborough had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic 2000 years prior.

"A democracy is always temporary in nature. It simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will will continue to exist up until the time voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promises the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse over loose fiscal policy (which is) always followed by a dictatorship".

I believe that. It could very well be that children being born today will have grandchildren that will never know the America today. Sad.

We need term limits, public campaign financing, balalnced budget ammendment, ban on ear marks and bridges to nowhere to start. Most of all, we need people reading this post to come forward and run for office with America at heart.

You people are so far out there it isn't funny. Obama was only concerned that this get done before his Big Birthday Party. I wish they would have voted this down instead of lying to everyone that this is such a big win for the Tea Party. I don't feel we have won anything. To me a win would have been getting everything we wanted and if the entitlement class can't make maybe they should thank Obama for all those shovelready job he created, But of course that is assuming they want a job . He and his administration have brought this country to the brink of destruction and the rest of the progressives are now trying to push us over. We need to get rid of everyone of them.

This comment is moronic in nature.

One only has to read the second sentence to determine that fact.

Well you can feel and say anything you as seen in your statements above. You have nothing to offer but calling people names.

Descriptions of behavior are not name calling.

Why is it so hard to just admit you hate the President and stated a moronic opinion/talking point to vilify him which has no basis in fact.
