The Federal government refuses to enforce laws against illegal immigrants, so the States pass laws to enforce them, and the Federal government files suit saying "That's our job, whether we choose to enforce them or not".

Sort of like a "Catch 22".

But the appeals courts have already ruled that States can enforce Federal laws against illegal immigrants that are far more onerous than Arizona's law, so it should be interesting to see what happens next.

We have about zero net illegal immigration now, with as many leaving as coming.

They are going back to Mexico with it's 4.9% unemployment.

That's right, Obama brought the immigration plague upon the nation.........really funny and by the way, what kind of jobs do this illegals have? In as much as their are set rules of entering our shores, blaming Obama and Holder would amount to gross irresponsibility. This is a problem that has faced the nation for decades and no president, congress, senate,companies that hires them and the public in general has actually made it a priority. Everyone keeps playing with it.

whether you like it or not, they are here to stay and the earliest they are absolved into the system the better. some of these folks are more industrious and sane than many asking for their heads. some of their offsprings have gone through good education and become great individuals than many yapping their mouth. Teenagers can get unemployment? I don't think so. Even adults losing their job can only draw if for a limited time.

Respectfully disagree. We invited them here by creating the conditions that made it attractive. To say that once they're here and have established new lives, in which they are productive employees -- for someone -- they can't advance to citizenship is just to ignore the reality of the situation and perpetuate a problem for which there is no other real answer. It's clear we can't leave things as they are. And we would probably prefer to have those who are here paying taxes.

But Kirby, Congress doesn't like that idea because taxes that are paid in on behalf of fraudulent workers go to the general fund, not allocated for benefits, where it can be raided with impunity for other purposes.

Seasonal workers are already allowed here under Visas.

If you want to enforce existing laws, start with the employers who flout them. Don't punish people who are only trying to make a decent life for themselves and their families.

When you break the law you don't get rewarded for it. It is enough that they stay here and I am not saying we should round them up and deport them. But citizenship is either through birth or through legal means. What about the people all over the world that do it through the legal machanisms? Should we just tell, oh well, you should have just snuck across and we'd reward you just the same

And, believe me, I know what congress does with the money, but I also know that the illegals get a lot of benefits, so even though the money goes one way or another doesn't negate the fact that they are here illegally. If you want to change the law, go for it. Til then no extra reward for border jumpers.

As you so correctly stated, we (hopefully) are not going to round up illegal aliens and deport them. They are in the US, an underclass of people living here,,,,and their children, if born here, who are American citizens.

So, it seems, that we need to do something to make the people legal, a path to citizenship. Make them pay a fine. Register the illegals. Put them on a waiting list for citizenship. At least this way they can get REAL Social Security numbers and pay taxes and all the rest.

They're not going back to their native countries. Let's make them productive workers who pay for the services they use...school's. etc.

Nothing changes for you or me and there's some extra money going to the Treasury.

We will just have to agree to disagree. The people that are here can get permanent resident status if they jump through certain hoops, but I cannot see giving them citizenship. And Anna, those people who do it legally are most certainly relevant. And they can become citizens.

The US didn't "invite" them to come here. They chose to break the law and migrate here illegally. How hard is that to understand? And as for what to do with them?? What would you like us to do? Would you like to reward them for not having the common decency to respect our laws? I'm sure that if the tables were turned, Mexico would welcome all us illegal immigrants with open arms, right? And as for our immigration policy, it sucks. I have a girfriend that works under a work visa. She relocated here LEGALLY. She has paid thousands of dollars for legal fees, immigration filing fees, etc. And her name is just one of the THOUSANDS that are waiting in a broken system to eventually be reviewed and hopefully approved to be a citizen of this country. Now that we choose to reward these illegals, what statement are we making to my friend? Where do we show to her that we as a nation value our laws and respect our citizens (and hopefully future citizens) while at the same time, we let people break the law? How is she supposed to feel? I respectively disagree with you too, we invite people to come to this country LEGALLY to work. We don't invite them to come to our country illegally. We need immigration reform, that doesn't include a path to citizenship. As long as the federal government refuses to do its job (and its been many many administrations both republican and democratic.) the states must be allowed some flexibility to enforce those laws. If, for example, California doesn't want to enforce any immigration laws, thats fine, let the illegal immigrants flock there, but if any other state chooses to enforce their laws that should be fine too. What do people not understand about illegal immigrants have broken the law simply by coming here illegally?

So by everyone's logic, we should all pack up and leave.

We stole the lands from the Native Americans who lived here, killed their people, moved them all over the country and broke virtually every treaty we ever had with them. We set them on on reservations..like concentration camps to contain them We are just now paying them for the lands we stole.

There are areas of California where you can live your entire life and never learn English. Same applies in AZ except it is mostly Spanish speaking.

I work in a Federal Building and watch the flood of then come in the back door and see ICE walk them out the front door. I don't think my people have been here that long. Many of the Black people that I met had serious landholdings and had prospered tucked away from Whites and the Klan. They developed schools and co-opts along the railroads to sell their animals, and some even got oil rich. Texas had a modest number of Hispanics until Jimmy Carter told the then INS to halt deportations, in 1979, so that Census could get an accurate count. Carter never told INS to go back to work, and it stayed that way until W woke up to the fact that he had screwed the GOP and without a scapegoat (Illegals) the GOP didn't have a prayer in 2008.
