Gingrich attends Nordic Fest

DECORAH, IA -- Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich made three appearances in Northeast Iowa on Saturday -- a pancake breakfast, a parade, and a county fair -- two of them tied to this town's 45th Nordic Fest.

The festival celebrates the area's Norwegian heritage, and it has been taking place there since 1967. Gingrich began his day eating pancakes and sausage at the Decorah Fire Department. He made his way around to every table in the two-room truck hall, shaking hands and asking for support in next year's caucuses.

The former House speaker then made his way to the Annual Nordic Fest Grand Parade a couple blocks from the local fire station. Gingrich and his wife Callista (who is in town to play the French horn in her Luther College band reunion Sunday) rode on a float with hay pulled by a big red tractor. The banners on the sides read, "The Winneshiek Country GOP welcomes Newt Gingrich." Amid other floats with Vikings, Wizard of Oz dancers, and clowns, the Gingriches threw candy and waved along the parade route.

After the parade ended, Gingrich commented on the ongoing debt crisis. He called President Obama "really irresponsible" and said he felt House Speaker Boehner's efforts are "steps in the right direction."

The last event on Gingrich's public schedule yesterday included a stop at the Mitchell County Fair in Osage, IA where he again greeted Iowans asking for their support in the caucuses. "I will be the only Newt Gingrich on the ballot," he said. Gingrich was escorted around the fair by State Rep. Josh Byrnes, who introduced the presidential hopeful to many locals, including small business owner Wally Rowcliffe.

Rowcliffe is undecided whom to support in the upcoming caucuses, but he noted, "Today would make a big difference, that he [Gingrich] had enough time to come and talk to us here in small town USA."

The Gingrich campaign said the candidate will be back in the Hawkeye State later this week.

What's sad is Gingrich is the only GOP/TP candidate with fairly reasonable experience for POTUS, but as we watch him handing out T-shirts made in El Salvador, and hear how our nation's problems have been building for a long time, one wonders if he was ever really the genius Republicans claim he was.

Some people long for rosier days and times long ago that remind them they used to have a life. Newt's time has passed. He doesn't stand a chance of winning anything but he's a bit hardheaded. It could be that he's just bored. He needs a little excitement. Don't worry dems... Newt is benign. He'll never reach the point where he will be chosen. Although, if there's anyone a liberal would want in office, it would be Newt. He may be old, but he's no real threat to progressivism.

    Irresponsible? LOLOLOLOLOL

Newt the coot with horn frencher Calista are the very model of a modern major couple that is more about arm candy worship and bad directional advice from a worn past political icon than any serious attempt to be Presidential. If we are known by the company we keep, who the hell is Josh Byrnes and where is Mitchell County?

It is still simply about earnings for their faux businesses, foundations and film-making (and I use the term extremely loosely here) industry prowess.

Missy TX, I commeted on your post on another thread but the woman selling cheap cameras in her post finally got deleted.

I want to say I like your posts and especially your tone. Your remind me of Ann Richards, she was one of my favorite Texans.

I take being compared to Anne Richards as a HUGE compliment Northstar. Couldn't hold a candle to my hero though. She knew how to pack as much punch as she did powder. Thay just don't build 'em like her anymore. Male OR female.

    So funny...

It's becoming increasingly clear that a number of the candidates running against the incumbent President have a fighting chance to beat him.

The economy and jobs picture virtually assures this.

Newt Gingrich was always a long-shot GOP nominee...although First Read and MSNBC clearly love him.

    That speaks volumes, doesn't it?

    That said...

    It's now:

    President Obama vs. the alternative.

    Any reasonable alternative.

    Again, that's...

    ANY reasonable alternative.

Anytime you're ready, maybe you could tell us all who you think would be a "reasonable alternative."

It's way too easy from the cheap seats, where all you do is take shots.

    AM-

    That's just mean.

The definition of a "reasonable alternative" can't be precisely quantified...mostly because President Obama continues to expand it on a daily basis.

You might even be looking for an alternative in the near future yourself, AM.

The debt ceiling agreement might provide a suitable impetus...who knows?

Anna, it's way too early to decide on a reasonable alternative. So far anyone that's in the running isn't real good. Too many of them jumped on the bandwagon way too early. My selection won't run because he's too new in government but maybe in 2016 he'll throw in his hat. I believe Marco Rubio would be an excellent president but he needs more experience with government.

    Brianb suggested Marco Rubio, AM...

If experience wasn't a factor in President Obama's case...

    Then, it would follow that...

It's a dead giveaway that you ate Chinese tonight Anna. What did you have? Someday if you ever decide to leave and go on vacation, you should come to New Orleans... there's some really great chinese restaurants with lots of selection. You might enjoy it.

      #5.1 - Sun Jul 31, 2011 9:07 PM EDT

LoL I had a caprese salad and a few shrimp on the side.

In other words, no Chinese. Not tonight, anyway. But New Orleans would still be sweet.

Ahhhh but if it's shrimp you like... the last chinese restaurant I went to.. actually it was a buffet, had Fried Shrimp, boiled shrimp, coconut shrimp, shrimp lo-mien, hot shrimp and sesame shrimp. They also had shrimp on the sushi. Like king crab? All you can eat. Oysters? Again, all you can eat... and would you believe it only cost $9.95? A person could get fat there... easily... LOL

Coconut shrimp ... NOW you're talking my language.

You make it sound so tempting -- all of that, and yet so gentle on the budget.

I don't think you can touch that price around here.

I don't think Newt even wants to really campaign hard or be nominated he just does enough to make a good living off of the political landscape. He is a free range politician this is how he earns a living he does not wish to get elected.

It is way hotter in Michigan than I thought it would be Northstar.

In Montgomery Alabama, the temperature last week averaged 95 degrees with a heat index of 115. Needless to say, my shirt was soaked several times while walking around on the project. Hopefully all that heat moved.... er... northward... hehehe
