Amid debt-ceiling debate, Bachmann says she has 'titanium spine'

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa -- Michele Bachmann spoke by speaker phone to a small group of about 15 people assembled in 100-degree heat in the parking lot of Dordt College here this afternoon.

The Minnesota congresswoman running for president apologized for not being there in person, and explained she was in Washington in order to vote down the Reid bill. Earlier today, Bachmann canceled her weekend campaign events in the Hawkeye State because of possible debt-ceiling votes. Schedule permitting, Bachmann will try and call into the events.

During this call running around 15 minutes, she talked of her biography, adding that her early childhood took place in Iowa. She described herself as the founder of a small business who understands how to create jobs. She promised she had the "titanium spine" to carry out her vision of smaller government, and vowed again to dismantle President Obama's health-care law.

Bachmann has one more event set to take place at 7:30 pm ET in Arnolds Park, IA. She said she would join her team tomorrow, telling the crowd here that she is getting on a plane to Omaha this afternoon.

NBC’s Anthony Terrell contributed to this post.

Yep, just what she needs to go with that titanium plate in her head...

The GOP made a deal with the proverbial devil when they thought they could ride the coattails of the Tea Party to "victory"...talk about buyers remorse.

Ok Jamie, this is news??

First of all Bachmann's small business must be that therapy clinic her husband Marcus runs and gets federal and state money and that might be ending come August 2. No more federal medical reimbursements. Bachmann was a tax attorney for the Treasury Dept of the Federal Government before she became a politician in 2004.

Now reading the tea leaves:

1. No vote will be taken in the House on Sunday. She will be in Omaha.

2.A vote will be taken in the House on Sunday but Boehner won't be needing the Teapublicans. a deal has been made with Nancy Pelosi.

3. She is missing her stop tonight in Iowa, because she has a fundraiser gig in Nebraska?

$. Other...

I think she's nuts, too, but that kind of crude personal remark plays as misogynist -- you're not, are you? -- and doesn't advance the discourse.

Anna, no not a misogynist at all. I think women are great. It's just that I think she is actually a robot. I don't think the Constitution allows robots, or other non-humans, to run for office. But I think my cats could do a better job than the crew we've got in there now, and anyone running for office. I just need to figure out how to get my cats a good lobbyist...

Reaching credit limit is not default. Not paying bills is default.

Obama has not offered to eliminate one program. He has only threatened to not fund social security checks. This after two years of no raise for social security. Why is it so hard to see he wants to eliminate social security?

This man is so short of leadership it defys the imagination of how you people can claim Bachman is stupid. You would not know stupid from page nine.

Being a misogynist means you judge a woman because she is female and not on "the content of her character", to borrow from MLK. It IS in fact possible to think a horrible woman is horrible and not be a misogynist, just as it is possible to think a particular blue car is blue and not be an automobile-hater.

Being a female feminst myself, judging Bachmann on the content of her character, I think she sets us back 500 years, and is indeed a titanium See You Next Tuesday, thank you very much!

          TEAM DAN!

You know, Melissa, you're absolutely right. I've thought it over, and I bow to your superior understanding as a "female feminist."

So the next time your daughter, your granddaughter, or the daughter of anyone you know comes home from school crying because the playground bullies called her a "titanium vagina" or that other word that substitutes equally well that starts with "c," I assume you'll tell her it's all right, honey, and assure her that those boys were just "judging [her] on the content of her character."

And then ask yourself what that remark has to do with anyone's "character."

As a self-avowed feminist, you ought to see the difference between expressing an opinion on the content of character and a gratuitous, pejorative, objectifying remark.

Your analogy of the car is absurd. A car is already an object. It didn't need Dan to make it so, and that's not the point. Perhaps Dan didn't insult Bachmann because she is a woman, but he consciously chose an insult that applies ONLY to a woman. If Dan really meant "robot," he should have said "robot."

You'll perhaps excuse me if I question your "feminist" credentials.

As for Dan, you can have him, and I'll take the other guys.

Congresswoman Michele Bachmann is a strong, independent, intelligent, attractive, articulate and accomplished conservative woman.  This terrifies the liberals who prefer their women barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen (actually, Michele has been there too, as evidenced by her 5 beautiful children).  Michele has a titanium spine (I feel sorry for her chiropractor) and she will never abandon the women of Afghanistan to be raped, enslaved and terrorized by the Taliban.  She will never abandon Israel.  Liberals want to "cut and run" and "let women wear berqas." They have spines of jello!

Tennessee3501, you lost me at 'intelligent'. Smart? Yes. Attractive? Definitely. Intelligent? Definitely not. She doesn't terrify liberals, it the fact that she can hoodwink people like you who will then vote her into positions of power that scares us.

And then there is the statement about liberals wanting her ". . . barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen". Seriously? Projecting much? You'd have a real hard time convincing all of those liberals who fought for women's rights, fight for fair pay, and fight against the glass ceiling imposed by misogynistic conservative businessmen.

Why do you conservative always say that liberals are afraid of someone when they disagree with their politics? Is it because you are actually the ones who are scared, so you project that fear onto those you disagree with? Just asking.

Sorry, Dan, but I have to agree with the others, your comment was out of line.

REALLY?!?!? This, coming from a Conservative Person whose party's goal is to RE-PEAL Roe VS Wade and throw EVERY road block in the way of a woman who wants to get an abortion AND interfering with her right to choose; from forcing an ultrasound on her AND requiring "RELIGIOUS INTERVENTION", to demanding to see her medical records AND condemning her to death for having a miscarriage.

For someone who knows all about creating jobs, where are they? Has she written any bills for jobs? She doesn't even know that holding our government hostage is no way to get an amendment to our constitution that they claim is so near and dear. So near and dear that they just can't wait to change it.

Her ideal of a smaller government I shutter to think.

Are you guys so dumb that you really believe the rich are pushing this smaller government for you? Norquist vows to never raise taxes on the rich again and you somehow think this is for you? If you aren't very, very rich you are just a pawn.

When they are done they will throw you aside too old to work and no social security and due to deregulations your retirement just happens to have disappeared. Robber barons rule like the drug cartels in Mexico. That smaller government looks like a vision to me.

I'm not worried about her spine. Lots of tea baggers have spine. It's their brains that concerns me, and she's particularly dim witted. Oh, and you gotta love Joe Walsh. No, not the rocker. The deadbeat dad congressman, tea party, of course, lecturing us on our moral responsibility to our kids. No party has a lock on corruption and lowlifes, but this guy's pretty close to the top. Maybe a VP candidate for Bachmann.

I must point out to everyone the M. Generally the metaphor is steel such as superwoman the woman of steel, having a steel backbone.  Men like Dan are sometimes referred to as "rocks" because of the stubborn state of their "brains".
