Pataki says he’s ‘considering’ WH run

MANCHESTER, NH -- You can add another prominent Republican who’s thinking about a White House bid.

“I am definitely considering a run for president,” former New York Gov. George Pataki told reporters here.

Fresh off a trip to Iowa, Pataki was in the Granite State leading a discussion on the debt crisis at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics at Saint Anselm's College. (Organizers claimed it was scheduled long before the current debt impasse began producing headlines.)

"We are engaged in generational theft. Politicians in Washington are stealing from our children's future… This is not leadership,” Pataki told the group.

When asked about the current GOP presidential field's handling of the debt problem, Pataki seemed dissatisfied.

"A Republican has to make as part of their campaign how they're going deal with the deficit and debt issue,” he told NBC News. “We have to have solutions. So far, I haven’t heard that. I'm certainly looking to see if someone has that plan in the tone of their campaign.”

Then Pataki paused to reiterate that he is taking a closer look at the White House. “I’m seriously thinking about it."

Here in New Hampshire, Pataki is the honorary chairman of a group called No American Debt, which hosted today’s event. He joined state Senate President Peter Bragdon and House Speaker Bill O’Brien to answer questions from approximately 20 concerned citizens, business leaders, and one college student.

Pataki wasted no time in attacking President Obama’s positions on a broad range of issues including energy, jobs, taxes, and the subject du jour: the debt debate.

As for when he might declare a run for the White House, Pataki knows the clock is ticking.

"I don’t want to put a specific date on it, but I understand that sooner is better than not.”

Pataki said it would “be great” if Texas Gov. Rick Perry entered the presidential race, but he stated firmly that Perry’s move would not ultimately affect his own decision.

“I will be very involved in some way, whether it's as a candidate or supporting another candidate or some other capacity."

So sorry folks but you've got this guy all wrong.

He is not even close to being a TPer.

He was a 12 year governor of NY....a very liberal state.... and that has to say a lot just by itself.

He is pro-choice, fiscally conservative and made some darned good choices for NY as governor.

If he runs...and re-gains some national recognition, he will be hated by the TP and Evangelical right.

Sort of kills his chances...

He's centrist and sane and reasonable and could easily run as a Democrat.

I know. But the joke didn't work otherwise.

Neither was John Huntsman, and you can't even recognize him now.

And look what they did to Newt.

If Pataki is serious, he may not be a Tea Partier now, but he will be.

He is the only GOPer out there who can capture the centrist movement...what's left of it...in the GOP.

He even knocked the GOP handling of the debt crisis.

You're right...he has a snowballs chance in Texas.

Molly: "what they did to Newt"??? LOL! You mean the guy who was a member of Congress for 20 years, Speaker of the House for four, resigned in disgrace and who is running for President? THAT Newt ? You think "they" did something to him that he didn't do to himself? Is there an adult in America who doesn't know what he is and can make up their own mind about him??

Ira: There is no centrist in the GOP anymore. Ronald Reagan would be villified (rose taxes, travelled to 'the evil empire', EXPANDED the Federal Government, and took a pass on lecturing women on abortion.) Couldn't be elected dog catcher by his party today.

Dont agree Alan....it was the Swiftboaters and the shenanigans by Ken Blackwell and the Ohio Republican party who made the difference.......money and apparently voter fraud win out everytime.

I often wonder as the GOP/TP are so concerned with voter fraud they are tying themselves in knots these days to do everything to make it harder for certain segments of the population to vote. Would that be because they practise all those things they say others do? Just a wonderin'.

Sb1, The government is really no different than any big business it has the same issues, employees, loans, profits and losses. All big business's have multi year plans and goals which is why he was successful in business, plus he cared about his employees. We need someone to come along and speak truth even though we do not really want to here it. We still need to hear it, its been to long since we last heard it.

well actually no, the government is not like a big business at all, and that misstake is why we're in the mess we're in. George Bush tried that one too, remember? Just let the market take care of everything, remove all regulation, increase spending, declare two wars on top of that, and promise people they don't have to pay for any of it. That was about as successful as his other business careers.

When the republican pool is this shallow, no one's afraid of jumping in. The republicans look at who is running, quickly come to the conclusion that the other candidates don't have a chance of winning the presidency, and jump right in; so far they are all correct, none of them have a chance of winning.

What a freaking zoo, everybody think they have a chance to be president because they think they may have a chance to beat the black man in the whitehouse, underestimators of smart and guile, they will find out real soon in 2012.

H Lang got it, nobody willing to say it, but we just can't have no blackman in the white house no matter what, it just ain't right and all. Besides he is just to smart and wants to make the white man a slave, you know like Hitler did and all. So this is what it looks like inside the cave. Nice finger painting.
