First Read this morning asked if the White House and Senate Democrats would blink on the issue of Boehner's two-part debt limit extension versus Reid's one-step extension.
In an appearance on "Daily Rundown," White House Senior Adviser David Plouffe didn't explicitly say President Obama would veto a two-step plan. But he emphasized that Senate Democrats would never accept it, saying Boehner’s bill “is never going to get to” the president’s desk.
“We should stop talking about the Boehner bill, as if it's some recipe for solution here,” Plouffe said. “It's dead on arrival.”
Ultimately, he added, the final bill may be a combination of the Boehner and Reid proposals. “What you're going to have to do is reconcile what's in Reid and Boehner.”

"What you're going to have to do is reconcile what's in Reid and Boehner."
Lovely.
More compromises? On what? Neither bill should pass Congress. Senator Reid's is only a little better, but neither bill has revenues.
Which I thought what deficit reduction was going to be all about. Revenues. Instead it's mostly cuts. Actually, it's ALL cuts isn't it?
The GOP have proven to not give a damn about any one or any thing. Same with corporate America. GE is shipping more jobs to China. Immelt (or whatever his name is) is bad as that Jack Welch guy who everybody @ MSNBC holds up as some sort of hero. He wasn't. He was a SOB of the highest order.
Well I'm glad Boehner's bill isn't going to pass. That's for all the bills you wouldn't vote with the Democrats on. Remember?
Just.say.no. Except to the rich.
Pat feel free to send any amount you desire for revenue to the bloated fed government, just don't try and spend someone else's hard earned money.
Bob - keep your "hard earned money". No one is asking for it.
Think Progress:
According to congressional Republicans and Tea Partiers, Americans are already overtaxed and contemplating any increase in government revenue, even from the richest Americans, would be unfair. “How high do taxes have to go to satisfy the appetite of people in this Congress to spend money?” asked Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA) this week. However, the numbers show that the economic recession and a decade of tax cuts have resulted in some of the lowest taxes of the post-war period. According to a new USA Today analysis, personal taxes — including federal and local — are at their lowest level since 1958:
Americans are paying the smallest share of their income for taxes since 1958, a reflection of tax cuts and a weak economy, a USA TODAY analysis finds.
The total tax burden — for all federal, state and local taxes — dropped to 23.6% of income in the first quarter, according to Bureau of Economic Analysis data.
From the same article:
So what do you want to do Pat? By re-instating the Clinton rates then taxes will rise for poor and middle-class families. I always love your selective editing.
BTW ThinkProgress is an opinion site. You don't have to cite them as a reference. Then again you could always form your own opinion.
It's way past due. Raise Revenue.
Pat - Thanks for your good post.
In fact, for middle- and low-income households, the stimulus program didn't go far enough. As long as those homes have incomes, their spending is far more significant to the economy than any tax breaks for the upper 2%, according to Nobel laureate economist Joseph Stiglitz, in his recent book on the collapse, Freefall. He observed that in the upper income brackets, tax reductions went into various forms of savings or stock investments, which do not help create jobs at all, or add growth to the economy.
He pointed out also that post-collapse while a portion of the low- and middle-income tax breaks resulted in increased consumer spending, savings rates also increased, frustrating partially the intent of the plan. That's why he advocates more stimulus spending that directly affect the economy, rather than tax cuts.
It's absolutely certain that the government must raise revenues as well as trim wisely - but the Tea Party-influenced rush to judgement, caused by creating an artificial crisis over the debt ceiling vote, is really the most unwise path to follow.
C'mon, Mr. Plouffe.
You're running the President's reelection campaign.
You don't want another debt ceiling vote before the 2012 election.
I get that.
On the other hand...do you want the debt ceiling raised?
Your boss certainly does...or should, anyway.
So...Harry Reid's debt ceiling bill cannot pass Harry's own Senate.
Boehner's bill should arrive there shortly, however.
The President should be about getting a bill to raise the debt ceiling to his desk.
Worry about your reelection later, Mr. President.
You have plenty of time to do that.
You have very little time to get the debt ceiling raised.
Gee whiz pat of boston...Have you forgotten that the obama tax cuts expire after 2012, should be plenty of revenue there to fall into line with obamas plan of 3/4 in cuts and 1/4 in taxes. But hey, if you want obama to cancel his tax cuts now, start lobbying.
Fine. But don't expect us to continue to fund your drinking water, roads, sewage, defense, food safety, fire protection...
Then how do you explain the quotes, video clips and sound clips from the principals in the articles? ThinkProgress is less opinionated than Fox and CNN.
All cuts and no new revenues in either "plan"...compromise...
The house bill isn't the only thing that's D.O.A.
Too bad there wasn't a commission that had a plan to actually fix what ails us for the long term...too bad...
dangerfield...
oooh...ooooh...I know this one.
Bowles Simpson or the Gang os Six Plan?
I studied up on politickin'
Article V Convention ^.^

"More compromises? On what? Neither bill should pass Congress. Senator Reid's is only a little better, but neither bill has revenues"
Absolutely, revenue is needed.
the economy is too fragile to have so much cut allowed without any form of revenue. when GOP/TB talk about shrinking govt., they fail to understand they're asking for a shrunk economy. this will cause laying off workers who in-turn, depend on doled out govt. checks for survival. You need revenue to open up the economy (expansion).
Collective scarifies is needed.
Everyone pretty much knows that there isn't going to be any kind of compromise. Do we really want to go through this crap for the next six months? If we're going to default, lets do it now.
The President has lost so much 'face' in his pandering to these extreme right elements that it seems the only way he can make himself relevant again is by vetoing whatever comes to his desk and telling Congress he won't sign anything that doesn't increase revenues as well as cut spending.
In other words, limp along and pay what we can after August 2nd until Congress capitulates.
Those who don't think the word "compromise" is a dirty word, and believe we need a balanced approach to solving our debt problem, contact your representative. The server and phone lines are back up.
Then call the Teabagger in the TP caucus who's not your representative and give 'em hell. Feel free to crash Joe Walsh's line as a start. He's the biggest douche bag.
It's always us that have to put up with this crap! Boehner's just determine to keep pouting and ignoring the fact that we would preferr the rich and him get tax and up the dept ceil and just stop pretending you all going to resolve this mess!! Government needs to be more about us and not for thier riches.
How is it fair that people making a $1,000,000 pay less in taxes than people making $50,000?
If the Filthy Rich paid taxes like the rest of us, there would be a SURPLUS, not a deficit.
doubting thomas - please study the following links based on IRS data.
http://www.ntu.org/tax-basics/who-pays-income-taxes.html
http://www.taxfoundation.org/news/show/250.html
The IRS data hardly agrees with what you say.
BTW - taxing everyone 100% would still not significantly lower our debt this year or next.
Obama "The only bottom line that I have is that we have to extend this debt ceiling through the next election, into 2013," President Obama said last week.
This is his only bottom line.
the totas - looks like extending out the debt ceiling 6-8 months is can kicking, but extending it out 18 months is not.
Looks more like he wants to have a blank check for spending more money in 2012.
Maybe he should raffle off more "have dinner with me and the wife" tickets.
Plouffe is good - very smooth. Glad he is back. As much as I have been upset with this President about playing nice with political thugs, I think I understand the total problem now. The Repubs are setting up this game of unreasonable choices versus ridiculously unreasonable choices as a gimmick to make it look like they compromise. They have never really compromised since Obama took office. Obama needs to kick the can down the road until 2013. Only then would the Bush cuts sunset. I hope the Dems see that the only leverage they have on revenue will be the 2013 sunset of the Bush tax cuts. Quite frankly, their only option will probably be just to let them expire. (ALL OF THEM) There will be no SUBSTANTIAL agreement on revenue increases from the current Republicans - EVER. If every starving child was cut off welfare and Medicaid, this group would jump for joy. THEY ARE MEAN!!! Hopefully, the Dems will just let the Bush tax cuts expire ASAP and cut defense SUBSTANTIALLY. That is the Dems only hope to returning the government to sanity. Look what the Republicans have done to California - by outlawing tax increases without a 2/3 vote. Now the Dems control 60% of the legislature and the governorship AND STILL CAN'T RAISE REVENUES! The new Republican Party doesn't care about anything other than keeping as much tax dollars in their constituents pockets as possible. They also like prisons and war. THEY ARE MEAN!! Ask yourself, what social proposals have Republicans proposed in the past six years? The past ten years? They did sign off on "No child left behind" and then refused to fund it - leaving the States with alot of mandates they can't pay for. Remember, the only social program REPUBLICANS like is a prison. They love prisons. They cut all state budgets to the bone - EXCEPT FOR PRISONS!!

Look what the Republicans have done California?
Democrats control everything in California except the weather and they are working on that. California Republicans can barely win an election, let alone an extended budget negotiation.
Republicans were willing to negotiate on the tax increase in exchange for a spending cap, pension reform but the unions would not allow it.
The reason that Jerry Brown didn't get the tax increase extended for 5 years was the poll started to show increase opposition for the increases and the unions did not want the public to decide.
David Sanchez, president of the California Teachers Association said
"If the governor were to propose an election say in September or November, it no longer becomes a question of extending the current taxes," Sanchez said. "It then becomes a question of raising taxes, which would be extremely more difficult and challenging (for) voters to pass."
Look what Republican did to California, you are so wrong.

Reid's plan would provide a record-breaking $2.7 trillion in additional borrowing authority, enough to tide the government over through 2012.
The raffle is embarrassing, not very presidential.
Boehner bill is 80.7 billion short and if the Tea Party t6hinks they can make up the difference to cut to social security and or medicare it is dead dead, dead
I'm so glad that the Gov is pleased with his health care and treatment (paid for by the taxpayers by the
way. Wouldn't it be wonderful if every American, not just the rich Republican fat cats had access to the same
wonderful healthcare? Not in my lifetime = thanks teabaggers!!!!!!
