NJ Gov. Christie hospitalized because of difficulty breathing

AP

Chris Christie (R-NJ) was hospitalized after experience difficulty breathing, related to asthma, his office says.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) was hospitalized with “difficulty breathing,” his office confirms to WNBC’s Brian Thompson.

Here’s a statement from Christie Press Secretary Michael Drewniak:

"Governor Christie was having difficulty breathing this morning and out of an abundance of caution he went to Somerset Medical Center to be checked out. In line with someone dealing with asthma, he is being given routine tests as a precautionary measure. The Governor is extremely grateful for the quality of care he is receiving this morning and has nothing but praise for the world-class doctors, nurses and staff."

*** UPDATE *** Thompson has more:
While it is not known if this is an asthmatic attack at this point, a source close to the governor confirms Christie has suffered from asthma for years.

"He carries an inhaler with him," this source told NBC New York.

He also noted that the governor's weight doesn't help his health issues.

***UPDATE*** WNBC's Pat Battle has more:
The Christie team is attributing this incident to complications from asthma. He will reportedly be released this evening and will return to the state house tomorrow.

His wife, Mary Pat, is expected to attend their son's baseball game tonight, as planned.

 ***UPDATE***
Christie has left the hospital. He tells reporters he will be back to work Friday.

How nice he's able to get "quality medical care"..... my family hasn't seen a doctor in years....WE CAN'T AFFORD IT! I've been unemployed for two years and now face homelessness unless the debt ceiling is passed, so to hear this blowhard receives the best medical care and everything else makes me sad for what this country has become.....

I worked my whole life and now I might never get the social security we so desperately need. My 71 year old husband can't afford his Medicare Part B Premiums so no health care there either and he NEEDS medical care! My college student kids and I will drown in debt due to student loans (which might disappear) but not getting them will leave them with NO future.... We live on a small pension and social security, less than $1400 a month and we're being asked to sacrifice more? Those elected people like Christie make a lot of money and get benefits people could only dream off but there's no talk of cutting back here, is there? They get more than generous pensions, quality health care, everything paid for and more.... while we loose homes and lives.... is this the balanced approach the GOP talk about? They should be ashamed!

Just curious but how old are you and your children? You're already on SS and you have college age kids? You also imply that the kids are going to college in the future. I take you are female, as you mention a 71 year old husband. You could be gay but then your kids would be adopted? You live on a pension but have been unemployed for two years and will be homeless unless the debt ceiling is raised? Why can't you, or your spouse, see a doctor on Medicare?

Are you in fact a paid troll just posting talking points on an item that concerns a man's health? Shame on you.

Get Well Soon Governor..we in NJ need you.

Is this when another anti-government health care benefits Republican gets to be treated under his government health care benefits?

Is anyone surprised that a morbidly obese man is admitted to the Hospital for shortness of breath? I'm surprised it hadn't happened sooner.

The NJ GOV was always considered a security risk by the Secret Service while visiting the White House.

One good fart from the fat bastard would knock the windows out of the Oval Office. !

And I hope all of you appreciate comments such as these when one of your family is hospitalized. People wonder why this country is in trouble - just read the moronic comments on this blog. You people have the brains of a neanderthal pidgeon and the compassion of a slug, and I wonder why I'm even wasting my breath with a bunch of goo-goo generation droids.

Who pays for his health care? Do we? Maybe if he stopped feeding his already fat face, he wouldn't have trouble breathing. He is definitely disgusting to look at.

I'll be nice and shut up now.

Maybe he can use one of those free clinics... Now I shut up.

The saddest part of this story is some of the comments posted here. Come back in a few hours and the most voted for comments will be overly negative.

Tell me about it. Remember when we were supposed to enter a new era of civility after Rep. Giffords got shot?

        ...

That was a nice fifteen minutes, wasn't it?

I'm not blasting him because he has cancer, or MS. I'm blasting him because he's a fat pig regardless of what is actually wrong with him. I eat healthy, exercise, and am in excellent shape for a 40 year old. That guy and people like that guy should be ashamed of themselves. He definitely has the means to live a healthy lifestyle and instead chooses to be a poster boy for American Fat Pigs. Absolutely disguisting. Hopefully his "asthma" attack will scare him enough to get that McBlubber Burger out of his mouth and jump on a treadmill once in awhile. I don't feel sorry for people who don't take care of themselves.

Don't forget he stopped that useless tunnel not like Whitmann who gave those casino's $300,000,000 to build a tunnel to get from one side of AC to the other 5 minutes faster. Now that AC ( Newark South ) is going down. What happened to all that money ?

I'm with Peter!! The Republicans are stripping our medicar and Social Security, and than has the absolute audacity to praise the great medical care he gets that is paid from our taxes!! Perhaps its the guilt from all the damage he is doing that is choking him from the inside.

            openmind266,

Get off your high horse! Republicans bring up Bachmann's migraines as an issue and you get offended by Feisty saying something about this obviously unhealthy governor's lifestyle? One thing is for certain and we learned it by killing an unhealthy man (Roosevelt) whom we kept voting into the office of the President; You have to be very healthy to be President. Denying that the Presidency killed him would be denying 9/11. Which of course Republicans are already doing when referring to "No terrorists attacks under Bush's watch!"

Also he would ruin our image across the globe. He would be the very picture of everything that is wrong with our "everything in excess" nation. Giving lots of fodder to every global news outlet to use against our nation. And unlike Roosevelt, Christie's problem is self inflicted, which proves no self discipline. Bad quality for a President.
